Since that first day, we have seen many, many changes in this ever-changing world. One such example of extreme and almost unbelievable growth and change is, I think, an excellent parallel to the growth and change in the Class of '72. I am speaking of the manned space effort in the United States. How does this program parallel the growth of our class? When the Class of 1972 first entered school on that September morning in 1960 MANNED space flight was still a dream in the minds of scientists and on the drawing boards of the engineers. Remember, Sputnik I had been launched just three years prior to our entrance into school, but there had been no manned flights until the Class of 1972 was in the first grade. Twelve years ago today, there had not been one single person in space. It wasn't until April 12, 1961, that Yuri Gagarin of the Soviet Union became the first human ever launched into space. It was only eleven years ago, last month, on May 5th, 1961, that Alan Shepard made the first American space flight. It hardly seems possible that in the last fifteen years, man could have gained enough knowledge about space technology to send men to the Moon and back eight times, actually landing men on the Moon five times. In the eleven years following Alan Shepard's sub-orbital flight, scientists around the world have continued to explore, experiment, and learn about space flight. It is amazing how much knowledge has been gained in those eleven years. The American space effort has grown from Admiral Shephardls fifteen minute flight of only a few hundred miles to eight Apollo missions to the Moon and back, journeys of millions of miles and of many days. Learn- ing never has and probably never will stop in the field of space exploration. In fact, learning never really stops in any field, or in any person. People, all of us, continue to learn throughout our lives, from the day we are born to the day we die. The Class of 1972 is no exception. We are leaving Wilmington High School today, but our leaving does not mean an end to our education. For many ofus today is the end of our formal education. For others of us, those going to college or other specialized schools, today is merely another step in or formal education. Every one ofus, college or no college, will always continue to learn. Although today ends twelve long years of school, our public education has actually only skimmed the surface ofwhat we will learn the rest of our lives. High School has taught us how to learn. Graduation is a Commencement, a beginning. It is not the end of education, it is merely the beginning. Some of us will enter the service, some of us will go directly into working positions, others, like myself, will enter college in the fall. We may go in two hundred and fifty different directions - I don't know - but one thing is for sure. We will never stop learning. We will continue to explore, experiment, and learn as the space scientists have done during the past decade and one half. Richard Keane 66 SALUTATO RY Children ofthe Grave Throughout the last few years, many changes have taken place in the world, most for the good but, unfortunately, many for the bad. This poem by Kendrew Lascilles seems to be depicting a superior thing surveying the now dead human race, dead because of the few bad changes. When all the laughter dies in sorrow When all the great galactic systems And the tears have risen to a flood Sigh to a frozen halt in space When all the wars have found a cause Do you think there will be some remnant In human wisdom and in blood Of beauty of the human race? Do you think the eye will blink Do you think there will be a vestige Do you think they'll curse the madness Or a sniffle or a cosmic tear? Do you think they'll even think? Do you think a greater thinking thing Will give a damn that man was here? The steps by which this race destroyed itself were probably the same ones through which we are going today: l. Progress, 2. Man vs. Man, 3. The End. The progress step is easy to see. Throughout history man has produced more and more powerful in- struments of death and destruction. Up until today, where we have bombs that can destroy entire coun- tries and kill millions of people. The man vs. man stage of the destruction has now become twofold. Not only is man fighting himself by now we are destroying nature. If the air we breathe and the water we drink become too polluted, the final stage will become reality. Today, we are only as far as the second stage of man vs. man and man vs. nature. But if we don't do something fast, the final line of this song, written by Iommi-Ward-Butler-Osbourne, could come true. Revolution in their minds - the children start to march Will the sunrise of tomorrow bring in peace in any way Against the world they have to live in. Must the world live in the shadow ofatomic fear Oh! the hate thatls in their hearts. Can they win the fight for peace or will they disappear? Theykeigred of being pushed around and toldjust what to S0 you Children of the World, listen to whatl Say They,ll fight the World until theywe won If you want a better place to live in spread the words today And love Comes flowing through. Show the world that love is still alive you must be brave Or you children of today are children of the grave. Children of tomorrow live in tears that fall today Robert Hogg 67 CLASS ESSAY Competition and co-operation are two forces responsible for much of the progress in the world to- day. Both are very pronounced in our society. Competition, striving for superiority, has become en- graved in the minds of all Americans. Co-operation, a joint effort between parties, has also proven it- self a successful asset. Even though each has hopefully the same end result, progress, the method used in attaining that end is quite different. Although thoughts may differ, the idea of competition in itselfis not necessarily a bad one. Competi- tion stimulates one to strive for goals beyond one's reach, to exceed one's limitations, and to gain confi- dence in one's personal accomplishments. Moreover, both self-respect and self-esteem can result from competition. This is especially true of the healthiest type of competition, competition with one's self. But what about competition between two or more people? It is here that competition may cease to be- come a constructive force. In the effort to out do one's rival, one's competitor may become one's ene- my. Thus, instead of striving for the goal, one becomes obsessed with supressing one's adversary. Rather than both parties prospering it becomes a question of the opponents pushing one another down rather than pulling one another forward. In this case, obviously, everyone loses. Co-operation, on the other hand, need not result in the stifling of one or more of the parties involved. Instead the joint effort relieves the pressure on any one individual by combining the talents ofall. Thus co-operation can save a great deal ofunnecessary repetition of efforts, as ideas which are shared can be added to the total as they are formulated, rather than being selfishly retained in an attempt to rise above one's opponents. The idea of co-operation is, however, far from perfect. Its major deficiency is that it may result in onefs becoming a parasite, a non-functioning member who contributes nothing and reduces the efficiency of the whole group. In addition co-operation lacks individual reward which could serve as a possible source ofmotivation. It does however replace this with a certain team spirit. In today's society, much of the emphasis is being shifted from competition to co-operation. Master craftsmen are disappearing as they are replaced by mass productions assembly lines. In hopes of pro- moting co-operation rather than competition between nations, trips to both China and Russia by Presi- dent Nixon have resulted in agreements to work together for the advancement of medicine, science, and space exploration. But, in the world of today, competition cannot be forgotten or eliminated. Its presence in the business world, for example, results in better products and better service. Competition and co-operation are two important ingredients in the recipe of life, but care must be taken. A future of progress and advancement lies in finding the proper balance between the two. An excess of competition may make life bitter, as a result of vengence and spite, while a shortage of coop- eration may make life tasteless, for joys that are shared multiply. But with the right amounts of each, ones life and future can be both a rich and fulfilling experience. David Doucetle CLASS HISTORY As we entered Wilmington High School fwas it really only four years ago'?J our class had two things in common: we couldn't find our way through the building, and we had a class advisor who couldn't find the top of his desk. Sometime during that first year, as we were learning our way around, we man- aged to elect, with Mr. Kelley's help, our class officer: Ed Gillis, president: Linda Lockheart, vice- presidentg Lauren Woller, secretary, Laureen Woller, treasurer: Muriel Kindred, Student Council Representative. Beginning our sophomore year right we elected Steve Lawrensen, president, Julie Marr, vice-presi- dent, Michele Elia, secretary: Marilee Cavanaugh, treasurer. We also managed to elect our Student Council Representatives: Ron Colbert and Fred Campbell and to sponsor a dance. As we moved into our junior year, we became a fairly active class under the leadership of our class officers: Frank Simmons, president, Mike Rounds, vice-president, Joanne Rooney, secretary and ori- ginator ofthe Hey Mani' a newsletter to keep us informed about our class: Maureen O'Donoghue, treasurer and the newly added Executive Board of Rosemary Bransfield, Marilee Cavanaugh, Cathy Gillis, Linda Lockheart, Peggy McNamara, Anne Novak and Joe Scifo. Our Student Council Repre- sentatives were Ron Colbert, Fred Campbell, Richard Gustafson, Steve Tower and Sven Wiberg. Among our activities that year were a roller skating party at Wal-lex Arena in March, and a car wash that left most of the workers cleaner than the cars. The Junior Prom, We've only Just Begun, was held at Rolling Green in Andover. Junior Week was highlighted by our parade from Weinbergs to the High School that did a greatjob of disrupting traffic to the possible delight of the the affected mo- torists, as well as the Junior Banquet and capped by the Junior Variety Show entitled Kelley's Her- oes held Friday and Saturday night was a big success. Mike Harrington was chosen as our school's representative to Boys' State and we chose Jamesway as our class photographer. To top off the year we held a beach party the last day of school. As we started our senior year only too familiar with the building and with our class advisor, Mr. Kel- ley, who still cannot find the top of his desk, we elected Tom McGinley, president, Carol Cipriani, vice- president, Rosemary Bransfield, secretary: Maureen O,Donoghue, treasurer and the Executive Board: Richard Buck, Peggy McNamara, Pat Nee, Anne Novak, Dave O'Rourke, Mike Sevrin and Frank Simmons. Our Student Council Representatives were Fred Campbell, Ron Colbert, Loretta Fred- rickson, Richard Gustafson and Sven Wiberg. Our activities included the Spurlows, a music group, a dance: with a dance and car wash still to be held. The Senior Class Prom, Castles in the Sky, is to be held at Castle Hill, Ipswich in June fol- lowed by the moment we've all been waiting for . . . Graduation. Richard Buck As No-Man descends the steps leading to the cellar of W.H.S., he finds himself amidst some strange and puz- zling reminders of the Class of '72. He ventures forth into a melange of torn draperies, old boards, and wooden stairs - the very ones that were used to construct the set of HA Midsummer Night's Dreamf' Carefully, he makes his way through the debris, searching for his destiny - an old wooden chest that is rumored to contain the last will and testament of the class of '72. Legend has it that, in an ef- fort to forget the antics and capers of those graduating seniors more completely, Mr. McMahon and his ever- faithful protege, Mr. Garrett, skillfully hid the chest from view, hoping that no one would ever dare to seek it out. They even took turns guarding the chest from would-be discoverers, until they were sure that their secret was safe. But now, No-Man has come forth to find the treasure and make the document public knowledge. With determination, he finds the prize fhidden in the corner, of coursej and moves quickly to open it. As he pushes away the cobwebs, he finds himself bewildered at first. The chest is practically empty, all that remains now of a once glorious class are a few representative reminders - the head of an ass, a nearly empty ledger book fthe type used to record never collected class duesj, a few empty beer bottles and cans, and - under them - a piece of paper! Excitedly, he lifts the paper from its coffin and at- tempts to read the handwriting. Darkness surrounds him, but he manages to decipher the following words ofintense wisdom: Hey, Man! This is the Last Will and Testament of the Class of 1972. Satisfied that this is all he needs, No-Man stands up, places the precious document in his pocket and walks for- ward with poise and assurance, confident that the world is now ready to learn of the secrets he has uncovered. In the background, however, he hears some faint, whispering noises. Before he closes the door forever, he listens care- fully and is able to hear this message, Well, Barney, this is another fine mess you've gotten us into . . . Mike Harringlon 7l CLASS PROPHECY The year is 1987 and I am an investigator. The past few months I have been researching a very unusual case. A major crime is rumored to be planned for sometime this year, but nobody knows when or what it will be. Our only clue is an old booster button from the Wilmington High School Class of '72. Having been a member of that class, I decided to investi- gate those class members whom I remembered to be most suspicious. Here are my findings - Jim Fairweather, Dale Mather, Merrill Maclnnes and Charlie Miller are four that can immediately be ruled out as sus- pect. One year after graduation, their draft number came up and they haven't been heard from since. Jim Maxwell is a teller at the Middlesex Bank. He is still working his way through Merrimac College and would be too busy to do anything illegal. Dave Kindred is a well established dentist who in his spare time, is a skate sharpener for the Bruins. His ploy, although unlikely, might be to put all the Bruins to sleep, steal their teeth and hold the teeth for ransom. This wouldn't be too diffi- cult as most hockey players have portable teeth anyway. Rosemary Bransfield and Bobby Hogg would seem unlikely partners in any business venture. They do, however, co-own a fashion shop-beauty salon complex in downtown Pinehurst. I think that Bob is the hair dresser and not the dress design- er because their shop is noted for its unusual hair design known as the bush. Along with their neighbor, Richard Allen, owner of the Richard Allen Barber Shop, they do not seem to warrant any suspicion. Mary Lindmark is a famous x-rated, I mean x-ray technician. Noted people from all countries demand to be x-rayed by Mary Lindmark and no one else. She also seems to be completely innocent. Dave O'Rourke is now a bartender at a bar in Switzerland. Mike Severin is the bouncer. A strange group from the class formed a firm known as Doucette, Keane, Harrington, Buck and Finckle, Incorporated. No one I talked to knows exactly what the firm does but knowing that at one time they were all interested in science and that their headquarters is the only medieval castle in Wilmington, one can only speculate as to why there are explosions coming from the castle during the night. Someone who might appear innocent is airline pilot, David McLain. But, is it just coincidence that his particular plane has been hijacked to Acapulco thirty-four times during the past year? Ray Dudley and Jack Barry are the only two who chose to come back to the high school. Ray as a gym teacher and Jack as a math teacher. Everything about them appeared normal except that Ray, who as I remember didn't have a particularly low voice, now seems to growl when he talks, and Jack is still going to Mr. Kelleyis math class every day. There is a women's lib. group in Wilmington headed by Sandy Jaeske, Cheryl Campbell, Loretta Fredrickson and Sandy Farnsworth. Since the movement fell apart ten years ago, only the radical groups remain and anything can be ex- pected from them. Tom McGinley and Dave Stewart own an off track betting agency in New York and Massachusetts. The fact that it is only legal in New York doesn't seem to bother them. The most sinister of all the groups were Rick Ricelli, Tony Romano, Rich Morasco and Tom Vayo, who head up the Wilmington Mafia. Don Ricelli is the leader, but they are now all being tried for the theft ofthe Kiwanis Club banner. Arriving at a reasonable conclusion as to who could be the future perpetrator of this crime was difficult until I considered the possibility of a teacher as being the criminal. I noted that Italians are notorious for their criminal activities, and, al- though not all Italians make a living in crime, the obvious ones become obvious when they stress the fact that their ideology and manner is best above all. lt also helps if they have an inexhaustable mouth which, at one time, made phrases such as, Gi ve it one of these, or teenyboppers at least in some ways, part of our everyday vocabulary. I now have a prime suspect who I shall accuse of being Italian, which, ifconvicted should put him away for a long time.
