After twelve long years of educa- tion, it is all over, right? No, definitely not. For some of us, high school graduation is only an end to one long chapter of our for- mal education. We will continue this education again in the fall in college, business school, or nursing school. Some of us have finished our formal educations and have jobs or marriage wait- ing in the near future. But in either case, whether or not educa- tion in a formal sense is waiting, we will all continue to learn. We cannot and do not close our minds because we have finished high school. Learning is a continuing process that began when we were born and will end only when we die. ' Perhaps now we feel confident and experienced because we are graduating. But we have not even begun to learn anything of our world. Learning is not necessarily linked with books. A child learns to crawl, a man learns to reason. Learning is a process that is intricately linked with the day to day experience of living. We have had twelve years of learning from books, but we have never has the experience necessary to test what we have learned. We have the tools -we have learned to read, write, and maybe think. What we build with these implements, however, depends on future experience and learning outside of our now relatively sheltered lives. We criticize our parents and their generation for their politics and policies. We oppose them vehemently on issues such as Vietnam. But when our turn comes, what will we do? Will we make the same mistakes that we feel our parents did? Were these really mistakes? We now know the rules of the game, but we will never know how the game is actually played until we play it ourselves. As we leave high school, we are not ending our education. We should be just beginning it. We have to learn to get along with friends and neighbors, and to build lasting relationships with people. We have to make places for ourselves inside, or outside of society, as we choose. We have to become aware and inter- ested in where our nation is going so that as citizens of a democ- racy, we can exercise fully the rights that are ours. It is impossible to close our minds to our world merely because we are graduat- ing. We can sit here, though, and think of freedom from teachers and homework. However, now the responsibility of learning is solely our own. Instead ofbeing satisfied with what we know, we should be awed by what we do not. Our real education should be just beginning. Ann Lombard 112 SALUTATORY CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO WORLDS I would like to welcome you all to the graduation exercises of our class of 1971. Many of us have been talking incessantly of May I4, the end of school, graduation, marriage, jobs, and college. We just could not wait until we could leave school. The moment is now here - why were we so anxious? To get out of school? I donit think so- I think we did want to escape the enforced security of school life, but many of us have a lot to look forward to during the sum- mer and next fall. This makes the end of school seem unimpor- tant. Itis just a phase that we all must go through before we can begin the rest ofour lives. I felt this way until about a month ago when I attended a wed- ding shower for a girl in the Senior class. Everything hit me there-that girl is going to be married and spend the rest of her life with someone. We are graduating and will go our separate ways, there will be some ofour friends whom we will never see again. I then began to see graduation with a different degree of importance. Though our lives are diverging, we all have something in common. We are going to face a challenge. We will have to face decisions as to what we will do: getting full-time jobs, serving in the Armed Forces, getting married, or going to college. These challenges all have certain requirements for the indi- vidual. Self-discipline, maturity, knowledge of ourselves and our capabilities, and the desire to accomplish our goals. Many factors influence the growth of these qualities, education play- ing perhaps the largest with regard to self-discipline and knowl- edge of our capabilities. Parents and teachers try to guide us in finding knowledge of ourselves and the desire to accomplish our goals. The teacheris job is finished-we must wait for the result. Very few of us can know if we are ready to make these deci- sions. Shortly we shall all know. We must rely on everything that we have been taught by our teachers and parents and the in- fluence of our peers. Many of our fears of the future are based on the doubt: are we ready for the world? Graduation is a plunge into the unknown. Being young and not really aware of the problems that will arise, we rush head first into a different world. The sheltered world we have known is gone, a new one with many uncertainties is here. We must learn to cope with each problem as it arises and gain confidence from experience. As we learn, we will mature, our base being twelve years ofeducation and eighteen years of grow- ing up now completed. We can only hope that our preparation has been strong enough. Today, as we say good-bye to our friends and wish them good luck, letis look back on our twelve years of schooling and then look forward, feeling confident that we are ready for the world. Margaret V ago i ESSAY 4 THE GREATEST, MOST IMPORTANT DIFFICULTY What does to have an education mean? Is it ofa book leam- ing nature, or is education knowledge and experience? Does it mean memorizing details for a mark to pass a course to graduate, or is education the desire for a mark to pass a course to graduate, or is education the desire to leam to develop the whole being? One thing is certain: to exist in society, some sort of basic edu- cation is needed .... In the words of Montaigne, a sixteenth century individualist: the greatest and most important difficulty ofhuman effort is the .... education of children. The fundamentals of an education involve such skills as read- ing and comprehension, and writing. These skills must be taught in order to be able to continue in education. The early years should establish the foundation for the years of education in the future. However, there is a point of saturation where an individual has had all the basics needed. Then he should be given the free will to develop creativity and individuality. This allowance for individuality should be an integral part of educa- tion. Forcing a student to do certain things in a narrow range tends to limit and inhibit his ability. By depriving a pupil of liberty to do things for himself, we make him servile and cow- ardlyf' flvlontaignel The student can only play back the ideas of the teacher and the subject he is compelled to digest. In today's system it seems that education places more of a stress on book leamingn and on competing for a grade of 93 in- stead ofa 92. Emphasis is placed not on what the student may learn but on how he perfomis and what his mark is. Education now means more of a memorizing for a mark for a short while, then forgetting the substance of the material after the test. Memorizing is without use, to know by heart only is not to know it all, it is simply to keep what one has committed to mem- ory. lMontaigneD Education, in many cases, means existing through boredom for a souvenir, a piece of paper, designating graduation and readiness for life. However, education should encompass the whole individual. It should not only involve the person's mind, but his thoughts and actions, his relation to other ideas and to other people. Edu- cation should be a learning experience and a development of person and spirit. Montaigne said that education should be a desiring . . . to form an able and efficient man Cratherl than a learned man. What use would there be of a formal education in life? The practicality of an education should also be an influence. There is no use teaching a student something he will never use. If a student is taught a subject that is completely irrelevant to his life and future, then the time used to teach the material is wasted. If the material cannot in any way contribute to the de- velopment of an individual, it is without value for all concerned. Education should not be an exercise just in memory or recit- ing the alphabet, but an exercise in learning and judgment, sense and substance. It should entail the whole spirit, it should influence the personis life and his role in society. Education should foster wisdom and judgment to bare and mere literal learning. lMontaigne7 The diploma should signify not wasted years of useless mem- orizing, but years taken to develop a whole, rounded person. This graduation exercise should mean more than a good rid- dance to years in a confinement of irrelevancyg it should mean a greeting to a new and perhaps better way of life as a result of suitable preparation. Almost everyone leaving here today should have a feeling of individuality and readiness to join, or tackle, life. Maybe a few do. But perhaps because of the present day system of education many cannot claim this, through no fault of their own. We would be remiss in our obligations to society ifwe did not strive to make education better for those students yet to come. Susan Crawford CLASS WILL We have made itl Four years of Barneyis capricious moods, four years of Mr. Carrett's meditation, four years of gym, four years of lockers and ten o'clock breaks, four years of band, four years of art, four years ofbusiness, four years of teachers, four years of those cafe lunches, four years of hockey, track, baseball, football, basketball . . . four horrible years. We the class of 1971, being of unorganized soundness, and doubtful sanity leave-ONE LAST QUOTE... Susan Adams admits at last that she is ofushapeless body and insane mindf, jonathan Hayward l CLASS HISTORY I guess the actual history of the class of 1971 dates hack to 1953 when 25 lmaliies came screaming into the world. Little did we know at that time that on Septemlmer 3, 1966, we would he entering Wilmington High School together as freshmen. The sun was shining down on us that Septemlier morning as we proudly, yet hesi- tatingly, entered the huilding and hegan to wind a maze that was to lead us to many new and enlightening experiences that would shape our future. With Mr. Crecoe as our class advisor, we held our first class meeting in November. What's it all ahout?', seemed to he the thematic question. At this time, nomination papers were circulated for class elections. Carl Capozzi was chosen president, Sid Tildsley, vice president, Marie Ricci, secretary and Mike Landers, treasurer. It was now that the very almle, yet not always welcomed, dues collectors hegan their work. It was during our freshman year that Cirls' lnaskethall witnessed a numher one vic- tory. Footliall really stepped into the limelight though as the team witnessed its first in a series of three numher one victories. To think our freshman class held some of the key players. Mike Espisito, Dick Cillis, and Rick Smallidge started to capture everyoneis attention. XVe had made many lasting friendships and learned to feel at home as our freshman year came to a close. As the leaves turned lirown a few months later, we found ourselves once more safely under the roof of XVilmington High, this time as sophomores. VVe still looked up at the seniors and juniors, ofcourse we won't even mention those 'ilittlew freshmen. Nliss Dolkart was our class advisor that year, and after elections, at the end of Octo- lmer, Sid Tildsley hecame president, Mike Curran, vice president, joan Cuoco, secre- tary, and Bill Custus, treasurer. With these four at the reins, our sophomore class dance was planned for Decemlier eighteenth. The Crystal Ballf, as the dance was called, was held in the gym. The Lost Cenerationf' was the hand that played. This year, the hockey team, with stars Mike Esposito, jim Irwin, and Dana Tighe, joined the footliall team to lmecome the numlier one champions from our league. In Nlay, we held another class meeting to decide on a location for our junior Prom. The Speare House in Lowell was chosen. It was also at this meeting that sophomore Crazy Day was planned. On june fifth, as a prelude to Crazy Day a sophomore class party was held at Silver Lake. A sleep out followed the party. On june sixth, Crazy Day had its heginning as two hundred uninhihited sophomores paraded from the Little League Park to the High School. So we had seen a second year fleetingly pass as our Sophomore year ended. After what seemed like a short vacation, we returned to VVilmington High, one step away from the honor of heing a senior. Mr. Osmond liecame our loyal and dedicated advisor that year, and after elections in Septemlmer, Bill Custus hecame president, jackie Nlicalizzi, vice president, Ioan Cuoco, secretary, and Judy Boeri, treasurer. An executive hoard was also elected to work along with the class officers. Memlmers included: Diane Burke, jackie Cawthron, Kathy Ingalls, Cail Provenzano, and Betty XVoods. In Novemlier, our officers scheduled a slave auction and a very successful cake sale. Shortly afterwards, we hegan laying out plans for the junior Variety Show. Iim sure the organizers will never forget all the meetings and parties after school with Mr. Os- mond. In March, we held another class meeting to make final plans for the show and to plan junior VVeek. The first day ofjunior Week, April thirteenth, was Bahy Day. All the hahies met on the Common, lvoldly marched over to the school, and homlmarded the principal's office with lmalloons. Everyone knows that lmalmies only use pennies. The lunch ladies learned this, much to their dismay as they had among their lunch count over seven thousand pennies that day. Tuesday, April fourteenth, was Dress-up Day. On that same evening at the North Intermediate School, we held our Junior Banquet. Awards for Scholastic achievement and special sports merit were presented to the deserving students. On XVednesday, we all had the opportunity to he what we had always aspired for. It was Occupation Day. April fifteenth was also the dress rehearsal for the Junior Variety Show. 120 VVe had planned for April sixteenth to be the day all Juniors would dress in red. However April 16, 1970, became the first massive skip day in the history ofWilming- ton High. It was probably the most successful activity a class has ever planned, out- side of graduation that is. ' Thursday, April seventeenth, was Crazy Day. VVhether for our protection, or for the townspeopleis or forjust plain publicity, we had a police-escorted parade from Wein- bergis to the High School. That night we had our first try at our junior Variety Show. That was a night we will never forget-a night of side-splitting comedy with the lead acts Romeo and julietf' Bad Death,', The Little Kidsf, The Bathroom Quintetf, and the HNewlywed Camef, Following the second run on Saturday Night, there was a cast party at Jackie Cawthron's. We hardly had a chance to catch our breath before our Junior Prom, Ext-alibre,', became a reality on April Twenty-fourth. Kathy Sugrue was selected to be queen. In May, we held our final class meeting. At this time, we elected officers for our senior year. jackie Micalizzi was chosen president, Lance Platt, vice president, Ioan Cuoco, secretary, and Judy Boeri, treasurer. Executive Board members included: Diane Burke, Patty Lawrenson, Kathy Bradly, jackie Cawthron and Cail Provenzano. During the smnmer, our class officers chose Chateau de Ville, on Route One in Saugus, as the site for our prom. I sit alone at present dreaming- U This is the attitude many of us had as we entered school at the beginning of our senior year. Because, although we were approaching the close of our twelfth year, we were beginning to dream about and make arrangements for a new life-a new career. Mr. Cogan became our class advisor for our final year at Wilmington High. Under his supervision, we held a candy sale in October. Soon afterward under the leader- ship of Mrs. Conzales, the senior play, Born Yesterdayf, was performed. Cindy jen- sen was the assistant director and Ann Stantial, Rick Bahia, Tony DeFrancesco, Bill Mt-Cinley, and lim Theriault were the stars. The yearbook staff began working diligently at their task. Mr. Hamilton took charge ofthe staff. Carol Freeman and jackie Micalizzi were chosen co-editors. In November, the XVildcats witnessed their third, Merrimack Valley Conference Championship and were also Class C Champions for the first time. Mike Esposito was the stateis high scorer in a one year, three year, and four yearperformance. Hockey was also nmnber one that year in our league. It is only fair to make mention of our terrific track team with star players Larry Harrington, Carl Cotter, and Mike Esposito. Basketball captains Bill Custus and Den- nis Murphy led their team through an exciting year in ,71. The baseball team, with captains Tom Mirasola and Richard Cearty and pitcher Bill Custus expect to be num- ber one when the season terminates. So, all-in-all, we have witnessed four great years in sports. NVe held our last class meeting in April. At this time, we dedicated our yearbook to Mr. Osmond and chose Mr. Lynch as Teacher ofthe Year. We are now in the fourth act of our play. Unfortunately, the majority of seniors did not choose to stay to see it through. May fourteenth was sign out day. Our Senior Prom, i'The Night Before The Morning Afterfi was held on june fourth and a great time was had by all. june ninth was our annual Senior Banquet. Cradua- tion was held on Sunday, june thirteenth. One very long chapter has just closed, a chapter full of many, many memories and experiences-some a little sad, some very happy. NVhen we read about a nation's history, we are able to see their mistakes and pattern our future accordingly. May our history serve as a precedent to a hopeful and beautiful future. 4 I V w N w N i l 1 L r 4 k I, 1 i l l 4 M .Z F r N 1 my Q2 A L f'Lfwff' Qf1+ rx M V 050500 V 'QJQE' 444W NJ jk E YS qxipifpi.
