We share the continu ing task of perpetuating these ideals and translating them into reality. It is not my job alone nor yours alone. It is ours together. No one realizes more than your President that success will depend in large measure upon the priceless legacy you carry away from these halls: the knowledge you have won hereg the stronger and more certain faith in yourselves that has been born here. To state that your Commence- ment Day is fraught with troubled times would be an understatement, but when have we not had troubled times? The troubled times, however, will not be resolved by sit-ins, demonstrations, placards and riots,-rather, the sound application of delibera- tion, judgment and the making of new laws to- gether with the revision of existing laws. Many of the problems confronting you have been your inheritance. Others will be created by you. Their solution will depend upon your common sense, education and decision,-not by emotionalism. The future is yours-may it bring you success with fairness, decency and justice. BERNARD P. McMAHON .. Kwai. 'I' ' V it if V!! I 0' V L, .f - 5 ' T . Q5 4 l a 9, i -1 '- as w. MR. Hardly a day passes without newsworthy mention of another student body protest against some inequity in society. And it's good that we young people take such an interest, for many of our elders would rather not. Instead, lbey talk forever about the mess at Berkeley, ig- noring their messes in Watts, Washington, and Saigon, which we as adults will soon inherit. What is this mess at Berkeley that everyone is always talking about? It is the very same mess that we find in Greenwich Village, Harvard Square, Haight-Ash- bury, or any other center where young dissenters congregate. Granted, these hippies dress avantgardely, wear long hair-both sexes, too!-smoke marijuana, and protest frequently. But beneath this messy surface, these hippies plea that society should make love, not war. Why don't we take their advice? Today's Americans have lost sight of their ideals. Instead of treating everyone as our equal, we call others nigger , jew , little brown brother. In a world where eighty percent of the people are non-white, is this the proper attitude to take??? Fortunately, many of today's teenagers think not. While our B-52's rain death and destruction on Vietnam, thousands of idealist students are teaching poor illiterates throughout the world to read and write, as well as helping them to grow and build schools and youth centers. In California five hundred Berkeley students devote six hours a week to tutoring West Oakland Negroes, others will help the Job Corps effort this summer. So this is the mess at Berkeley? America's youth has assumed more than its share in socially uplifting the world's indigent. We have also taken political stands that are neither safe nor popular. We reject the way in which our Negroes have been forced to live in substandard housing, attend substandard schools, receive substandard wages. People still wonder why we have riots at Hunters Point, in Watts, and in Harlem, when the Black Panthers marched into California's Senate Chamber, everyone was shocked. But how would we react after a life in Roxbury as second class citizens??? Tbir is a mess that our generation must clean up . The war, too, is our business. Most of the troops in Vietnam are teenagers, and many from this graduating class will find themselves there, if the war does not end soon. Not all of the soldiers support our cause, as evidenced by the many letters sent home by our fighting privates. In answer to these pleas, teenagers have marched against the draft and the war throughout the nation. Too often, though, youth forms the majority of such demonstrations, as at San Francisco's Kezar Stadium, where we composed seventy five percent of the 70,000 present. And too often does our government ignore these protests, insisting that the consensus of popular opinion sup- ports the war. Many have also refused to bear arms, preferring to perform more humani- tarian services in a 1-0 status, working in military hospitals stateside. These conscientious objectors have therefore been called selfish and unpatriotic, and many have been severely reprimanded. This, in a country where the whole essence is that we do only those things that we voluntarily select to do. As for the other messy legacies willed to us, America's youth has shown an honest desire to clean them up, too. In fact, many adult legislators validly argue that eighteen- year-olds should be enfranchised, because we show more concern about world affairs than do our parents! Already one out of every two Americans is under twenty five. Although our present national leaders represent the older segment of our population, I hope that we'll see a younger government before the century's end. So it remains to us, our nation's future adults, to ensure that the hippies' plea to make love, not war does not go unheeded. When we cease claiming conscientious objector status in the wars on poverty and against discrimination, lloezz we can call ourselves true Americans. By fulfilling this goal, we will make a better world for ourselves and our posterity. RONALD WOLFF Salutator Reverend Clergy, Mr. Shea, Mr. McMahon, members of the school committee, teachers, parents, invited guests, fellow classmates: I am very honored to welcome you, on behalf of the class of 1967, to our graduation ceremony. We have had twelve memorable years of schooling-learning and working to the best of our ability-in preparation for this moment. The Bible says, A man's wisdom makes his face shine. I am sure you will agree as you gaze at our graduating class. We are grateful to those who have given us knowledge. To our parents and teachers we owe much, for they have helped mold our convictions and ideas. The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools, reads Ecclesiastes. And so we have been guided by the words of the wise. We have learned many good things from you. But we have also heard theories on brotherhood and love, while simul- taneously seeing very different ones practiced. A modern songwriter aptly observed: Hate your next-door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace. Some people are hypocrites. They seem to believe loving your neighbor is for the other fellow. Our generation is developing a new set of standards and trying new ideas. This generation is candid, open, critical. We find fault with the trend to thinking great thoughts and doing nothing about them. The majority of us are optimistic, idealistic. We are ready to cure society's ills, improve man, and obtain peace-but not at the cost of freedom. Perhaps, as we have been told, experience will dull our enthusiasm. But each of us, I am sure, has his own plan to improve the world, in his own way, be it large or small. We, the class of '67 have great plans for the world. May I borrow the words of a wonderful song: Move over sun, and give us some sky We've got some wings, we're eager to try, We may not be known, but wait till we've flown, You're gonna hear from us. We hereunto set our hand and seal to this, our last will and testament, on this fourteenth day of May A. D. 1967. WENDY EVANS gi' it rf' ' A gs, . 1 . ssay Robert Burns once said, An educated man stands as it were in the midst of zz bofzzzdleff arsenal and magazine, filled with all the weapons and engines which man's skill has been able to devise from the earliest time. After twelve years of public education we have acquired the basic tools with which to build our futures. Some will put these skills and knowledge to immediate use while others will continue their education in the hope of becoming more proficient in a particular field. Our progressive world demands such a foundation upon which the individual can build and grow with our constantly changing society. This framework allows us to branch out into more specialized fields and perfect one aspect of our arsenal. This individual, no matter what his skill or profession, in some way contributes to the growth of our society. The construction of a house, for example, requires the combined talents of many people. The architect who designs the struc- ture may have some wonderful ideas, but blueprints are value- less without someone to transfer his ideas into something tan- gible. Carpenters, painters, and electricians are among the more obvious people involved in the construction of the house. But who cut and treated the wood the carpenter uses, who developed the weather resistant paint, and who was involved in the assembly of the electrical circuits? Too often we only give credit to people like the architect and don't stop to consider the host of others who contributed to the materializa- tion of his blueprints. True, he had the basic plan, but from there it was taken out of his hands, depending solely on the skill of others for its completion. Specialization has become more and more evident in recent years. In order to be a well-rounded person, however, it is necessary to have a wealth of general knowledge. Each suc- ceeding senior class is exposed to more knowledge than the previous class, as schools try to keep the pace with advances in our modern world. In closing I would like to paraphrase a quote from Socrates. There is only one good, knowledge, and only one evil, igzzorfzlzref' MARJORIE GAMBLE P 0 C ss Histor In September 1964, we entered Wilmington High School as freshmen. Under the direction of Mr. Shea, we elected officers. Robert Marchant was elected president of our class with David Boeri as vice-president, Pat Chinappi as secretary, and Andrew Gianino as treasurer. Louis Kleynen and Wesley Kobylak were elected to the Student Council. The next fall, under the leadership of Mr. Shea, we elected David Boeri president, Andrew Gianino vice-president, Janice Robbins secretary, and Michael Caira treasurer. The newly elected sophomore Student Council members were Leo O'Connell, Bill Kennedy, and David Boeri. Our first dance, 'Santas' Shindig, featuring the Playboys was an outstanding success. We left in Iune with close to one thousand dollars in the treasury. The top ranking sophomoresa-XYfendy Evans, Andrew Krey, Dawn Williams, David Boeri, and Malcolm Merenda-were awarded plaques at an assembly in june. Wfe returned as juniors with a new advisor, Miss Halpin. The slate of Officers differed only in that Martha Land was elected treasurer. In November, our annual Thanksgiving dance, entitled Gobble-a-go-go with the Crestriders proved to be a great success. On April 25th the long awaited junior Wfeek began. Our first activity was the banquet on Monday night. This was followed by a softball game at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday. Dress-up day was on Wednesday and finally, after a quiet Thursday, Wfilmington exploded on Friday with a Crazy Day Parade down Church Street under police escort with Kenny Foberg and company providing entertainment from a pick-up truck. Under the direction of Miss Sharp, the junior Variety Show was quite successful with Michael Caira as Master of Ceremonies. just one week later, the junior Prom, entitled Isle of the Golden Dreams was held in the gym. jo-ann Licari and others worked many weeks making decorations for this event. Also during our busy junior year, Wilmington High School held its first annual Student Government Day program. Flected to the Board of Selectmen were Wesley Kobylak and Michael O'Reilly. Michael Caira was selected as Town Manager. Diane Peterson, Betsy Hodgkins, Marilyn Boudreau, Ronald Wolff, and Michael Kaszynski took five of the six positions for the School Committee. The Student Council also held their elections and the successful junior candidates were janet Witham, Betsy Hodgkins, Connie Blomerth, and Wesley Kobylak. After three successful years as underclassmen, we entered once again into the halls of Wilmington High as Seniors. Under the direction of Miss Halpin again we elected officers. David Boeri, Andrew Gianino, and janice Robbins were all re-elected to their offices. A new treasurer, William Kennedy, was elected. Our two dances, the Halloween dance featuring the Five Beats and the Valentines Day Massacre were more than great successes. Our Senior Class Play, You Can't Take It With You, proved to be one of the biggest successes ever. Mr. Hamilton did a fabulous job of directing the play. A yearbook committee was founded early in the year, and John Brown was elected editor. In the Second Annual Student Government Day Program, members of the class of 1967 again won the majority of positions. The members of the Board of Selectmen, all seniors, were Andrew Gianino, Andrew Krey, Paul Maloney, Ronald Wolff, and Michael O'Rourke. john Brown was appointed Fire Chief, Mike Kaszynski Police Chief and David Boeri as Town Manager. Seniors on the School Committee were Wfendy Evans, David Winters, and Marilyn Boudreau. john Brown was also elected to the State Stu- dent Government Day which was held in Boston. Our Senior Prom entitled, The Shadow of Your Smile, was held at the Colonial Inn in Wakefield on june 1, 1967. Mr. Graceffa and his orchestra provided the enter- tainment. Our last class function before graduation was our Senior Banquet on june 8, 1967 at Wilmington High School Cafeteria. Our graduation was held on the football field on Wilmington High School on june 11, 1967, at 4:00 p.m. And as we have completed our final year at Wilmington High School some leave with regret, some with fond memories, while others leave happily. MARILYN BOUDREAU The class of '67 didn't learn anything about valueseor maybe we didn't teach them enough about values, said Mr. Shea rather disgruntledly as he swished the wallpaper brush around in the paste pail. Yeah, replied Mr. McMahon, XX!hat did we ever do to them to make them take this kind of revenge? Didn't our P.O.D. classes explain to them how to use the right to vote? Sure, but that class never listened, 'member? Oh well, they had it all figured out, answered Mr. McMahon. I guess Boeri and Gianino were a strong combination. It was their organization that acquired the block vote to lower the salaries of the administration. So here we are-hanging wallpaper, no less-to earn enough money to make ends meet. It doesn't make cents ! Imagine Werady' Evans and Marilyn Budreau on the school committee, what dyna- mos ! said Mr. Shea still swishing the wallpaper brush around. I could have told you they'd be like that five years ago, said Mr. McMahon. People are really predictable aren't they? Somehow we knew that Artie Lloyd, Paul Farrell, Tom Park, Bob McPheeters and joe Giddings, along with Bill Lowell, Daniel Mein, Mike Barry, Dave Fox, Bob Madi- gan, and Anthony Tedesco were cut out for the armed services. Imagine voting by absentee ballot! Doug Prosser, Willter Perrault, and Sonny McKay were able to vote in person, anyway. They were AWOL! WOL1ldH,t you know it. The girls who got married-Nancy Rowland, Barbara Traill, Suzanne Coy, Lynn Fielding, Linda Lawrence, Chris Anderson, and Gail Brabant, and Cathy Roberson-all persuaded their husbands to settle in Vifilmington 'til at least this November. Joanne, Jimmy and Michael are doing fine, but unfortunately Joanne is wearing the pants in the house: she told Jimmy how to vote! Beth Holbrook is happily married and has four kids, but they are all a little sick of having ice cream for breakfast, lunch and supper! John Knowlton and Wfalter Drew voted during the five minute break!!! Boeri won the selectman's seat by a close margin. Caira, his opponent received threat- ening support from those Sons of Italy. Their secretaries Sharon Aberle and Cathi Anderson counted the ballotsg therefore, I asked for the recount, and those other efficient secretaries-Chris Luken, Phyllis DeCosta, and Diane DelRossi assisted by Donna Daily, Roberta McLaughlin, Rebecca Baker, Martha Anderson and Maryanne Ethier-recounted for us. Bill MacDonough, Bill Hudson, and Richard Ely formed their own construction company already worth a few million. The bridge they built over the railroad on Shaw- sheen Avenue collapsed after Mark Peters drove his truck over it. Those lawyers-would you believe it-Wfes Kobylak, Andy Giannino, and Bob Cuoco managed to prove that construction was OK. They couldn't help it if the cardboard got wet!! Steven Barry and Roger Mitchell, other engineers, went to Italy to see what they could do about the Tower of Pisa! Css Prophecy Martha Land is teaching Latin in a high school near here. The class produced many teachers+Marjorie Gamble, Cindy Case, Dave MacFachern, Nancy Wfeinberg, and Karen Sevener. David Winters, Andrew Krey, Linda Sullivan, Edith Young, Peggy Funk, and Marilyn Boudreau are also making youngsters miserable somewhere! They say that Wfayne Drew and Jimmy Cushing have a real Coach Bellissimo-Mr. Murphy system worked out in Tewksburyf' Turn down that radio, Mr. McMahon, and stop thinking about that band that Ken Foberg leads. There you go again, pasting the wrong side of the wallpaper! The music sounds good though, huh? That's probably Bobby Hand on the drums or could it be Sonia? Morlani plays a beautiful oboe in this piece. XVould you believe we even had a few scientifically inclined students. Ralph XVhit-' ney, though, had a few problems: he broke so many test tubes' he now blows glass! Tom Silvers is Avco's most effective nightwatchman-he has his arsenal there! Bob lflores was discouraged by calculus in college and is now working with the cemetery depart- ment trying to figure out how to keep the grass from growing so fast so he can take time off from mowing to see Judy. Richard Norton and Wfayne Aruda are physicists. But Wayine found out that physics just wasn't physics without a Tellier around! He gave it up and is now giving karate lessons at Humpty Dumpty School. Ulohn Brown organized an excellent fire department. Witla Leo O'Connell as first lieutenant, they have declared chemical warfare on the fires in the high schools bathrooms! Arthur Bureau and Kevin Carney fly a helicopter around town to report to Mike Kaszynski, the Police Chief, when Robert Marchant is off his beat and behind the package store . .. Mike appointed Erwin Hanke the truant officer. l'm sure he'll know all the tricks. Peter Farrell couldn't decide between professional baseball or art. He tried out for the Red Sox, didn't make it, and now has a job painting a mural on the clubhouse wall. Connie Blomerth, Tanis Moody, Diane johnson, and Marcia Cram are still trying to figure out a way to make money without getting their hands dirty, Someone told Al Devine he was colorblind, so now he's painting the lines on the highways. Did you notice the pink one in front of the new Town Hall? Both Dave Norton and John Lacey nearly got killed making a killing on the stock market. They survived to help jimmy Duda expand his pushcart business to an inter- national fruit exchange. Dennis McCarthy pilots one of his banana boats. Tommy De- Felice, Robert Cassello, and Robert Finney trained local monkeys to help load the boats. They now have a fantastic pilfering problem! ! Did you know Tommy Magee owns this apartment house we're working in. asked Mr. McMahon. No, I didn't-ah, here is the building superintendent. Maybe he will let us take a break now, said Mr. Shea. Paul Maloney came into the room just then, slipped on some scraps of wet wallpaper, said something under his breath, and promptly fired them both.
