Affectionately known to us as Uncle Vinnie, he has dedicated himself to assis- ting each member of our class in reaching our goals and fulfilling our dreams for the future. Whenever we had a problem, personal or other- wise, he was always there to hear us out and lend a helping hand. To the Class of 1965: Your steady growth into fine young adults has been the source of much satisfaction to the members of the School Committee and the School Administration during the past four years. We have admired your energetic drive to improve the life of the school, to obtain high scholastic attainment, to pursue meaningful extracurricular activities, and to perform heart-warm- ing deeds in behalf of your fellow students and teachers. I sincerely hope that each and every one of you will succeed in your ambitions. You are graduating at a historical time in the annals of Wilmington High School, for as you leave to make your way in life, so also leaves one whose ideals you might well adopt to guide you successfully through life. Bliss Laura Marland retires this year after forty-six dedicated years in the service of your high school. There is not enough money in this world to pay this wonderful person for the good she has done and the hours she has toiled to make it possible for the youth of Yvilmington to become more intelligent and decent citizens. Fortunate are you who have been privileged to have attended her classes. You would do well to copy her code of ethics. 67' Harold E. Driscoll Assistant Principal 9 . Congratulations to the Class of 1965 upon your graduation from High School! Rlay the future un- fold for you in health, joy, and success in your ev- ery endeavor. The Class of 1965 has a dual distinction - first, in concluding the final phase of your education at Wilmington High School, and secondly being the last of forty-six classes to have had the privilege of being taught by Bliss Laura N. Niarland. Dedication has been a deep-rooted trait in the sterling character of fwliss Niarland. As the years roll by, may she hold an honored place in your memory. Treasure her teaching, and may her guid- ance and example be a continued source of inspira- tion to you, as it has been to her colleagues. fQ.,Va4,o'f 'CZQZJZK Mr. Bernard P. McMahon Principal . The 1965 Lowell Suburban League Champions Under the capable coaching of Miss Georgia Dadoly, the Girls' Varsity Basketball Team completed their season with an unde- feated-untied record of 16-wins, no losses, and captured the Low- ell Suburgan League Championship. The fabulous squad burned up the court with an amazing exhibition of dribbling, accurate passing, and a substantial shooting percentage. Their ability to play as a team, not as individual stars, contributed to their great success. Seniors on the squad were Captain Lucille Huston and Nancy Hall on defense, and lN4aria Ferrara on offense. The high scorers were Juniors Sandy Burns with 218 points and Sharon Justice with 126 points. 'XVith these hoopsters returning next year, anoth- er winning season seems likely for the Wlildcats. Senior center Pete Emery was leading scorer and Most Valuable Player in the league. He and senior defenseman Dick Page also gained berths on the All-Star Team. Oth- er seniors on the squad were Paul Currier, jack Garden, Gene Dussault, Tom Hand, Wayne Hamilton, Dennis De- Maggio, and Nino Trimarchi. , Q- W Goalie Leo O'Conne1l desperately tries to block the shot. 89 ICE HGGKEY Wlayne Hamilton clears the puck out of the defensne ZOHC. Benediction ff' SALUTATCDRY Nlembers of the school committee, Mr. Shea, Mr. McMahon, teachers, parents, Reverent clergy, fellow classmates, and invited guests: It is a great honor for me, on behalf of the class of 1965, to welcome you to our graduation exercises. For some, todayis ceremony will be the conclusion of their formal education, for others, the conclusion of twelve years of preparation for further education. The graduates gathered here today are an acknowledge- ment of your guidance, love, and care. Looking back we cannot help but appreciate and admire those who have led us toward this day. Parents and teachers alike deserve our utmost gratitude for what they have done for us. Leading us by the hand, prodding us from behind when necessary, these people have helped us realize and accept the importance of an education. They have helped us, through their constant surveillance and assis- tance, to obtain the ultimate goals of any student. Looking ahead we experience many emotions: fear for our continued success, anxiety over our new-found independence, but above all, hope for a happy life. From this hope stems faith - faith in ourselves. in our fellow human beings, and in God. Without this faith we will have nothing to grasp, no straw to clutch if our dream world crumbles. Yesterday and today were sheltered worlds. NN'e walked proudly, carefree in the sun, rarely considering evil, seeing only good. Ignorant of the worries of others, we roamed in the warmth and serenity of protection. Oblivious to conflict and se- cure in the palm of experience's hand, we had little thought for the future. Tomorrow is another world - a world wrought with responsibility, strife, and worry. Suddenly we are confronted with all we have been sheltered from for twelve years. Thrust abruptly from experience's abode, we must build our own defenses against the bigotry and greed of the outside. We may no longer depend on adults for total guidance, for we have become young adults ourselves. But we are not alone. There are some who will fail. There are many more, however, who will not fail and will not be discouraged by the numerous set-backs in life. For twelve years we have been readied for today's ceremony. Our teachers have spent many hours assisting us to develop our minds and bodies. These hours have been fruitful, we, here, are the visible proof of those hours. The greatest amount of credit, however. goes to our parents. As parents they have loved us, taught us, and provided for us. Love comes nat- urally to a parent, instruction also, but sufficient provision is a life-long struggle. 'XN'e may never realize what sacrifices they have made, material as well as emo- tional. The youth of today tends to forget that his parents are more than stern protectors. His memory lapses when he tries to recall moments of care and under- standing. But thqy do not forget. They have always been near to supply help when we wanted it, consolation when we needed it, and love. It is through them that we have found the strength and desire to continue, for in todayis world of competition we have needed both. They have been our examples of manhood and womanhood. We can only con- tinue to show our respect for them, for this is the best way we know to express our love and gratitude for all they have accomplished. Our parents molded us. If we, as adults, can only do as well with what God gives us, perhaps the succeeding generation of the world will live in peace and love of mankind. LIOANNE BAKER 114 CL SS SSAY Nineteen centuries ago, Juvenal, the foremost Roman satirist once said, ffMens sans in corpore sanof, This well-known but seldom heeded phrase translated into English simply means a sound mind in a sound body. Today many of us do not realize the extreme signficance of this quotation, and very few of us make an effort to exemplify it. We should be aware, however, of the fact that science has shown a definite link between mental and muscular conditions, and that most ex- perts agree that the better a person's physical well-being, the happier he is likely to be. In educating the children of our country, equal consideration should be given to both the intellectual and physical aspects of the child's health, without an un- due emphasis on one to the exclusion of the other. Though a man be capable of performing great feats on the athletic field, he is not a whole man in the true sense of the word if he is not able to think and reason effectively. It is also true that a keen mind in a body which has been allowed to deteriorate will be of little benefit to the individual. HA sound mind in a sound body! How well these words might serve as a guideline for all Americans, young and old. Students require sound health to learn, adults to earn a livelihood and to participate effectively in our societv. It is undoubtedly true that these words signify the most important criter- ion for the selection of this country's astronauts who are endeavoring to reach the unknown realms of outer space. These men have been trained to attain a high degree of mental and physical proficiency. Both physical and mental exams are required to enter the armed services of our country. The United States is certainly not going to allow some unintelligent, illit- erate person into its forces, nor does it intend to permit a physically weak indi- vidual defend its flag. These men or women who do enter the military ranks must have a sound mind and body. When we graduate from school and go on to college or work, our physical and mental well-being cannot be neglected. Health, the most priceless possession of all, certainly cannot be ignored. Neglect of our bodies can only lead to degenera- tion of both the mind and the body. It is extremely worthwhile to continue our education or enter into some admirable field of work, but all the prosperity and knowledge which one may possess cannot replace the satisfaction of being a healthy individual. We owe it to ourselves, our families, and our countrv to remain healthy by always retaining a sound mind in a sound bodyf, i PETER EMERY 115 VALEDICTCDRY One of the many strange traits common to the high school senior is alledged to be the quality of ingratitude or at least forgetfulness. This characteristic is attributed to the studentis misinterpretation of scholastic responsibility as a form of punish- ment. The student, unaware of his education's true value, often replaces thanks with resentment. I, however, feel that this year we must pause to give credit where it is due. To establish the fact that there is a cause for credit we merely have to cite our increase in knowledge. Surely, those responsible should be recognized. Wle must acknowledge the work of our school system in general and our teachers in particular for bearing the immense task of preparing a new generation for life. These dedicated people unselishly impart as much of their knowledge as possible to todayis youth so that tomorrow's world might beneht. Our teachers do not claim to be or produce geniuses. They do, however, through experience and training, incite and guide natural talents. Despite their seemingly superhuman quantities of knowl- edge, patience, and understanding, these devoted people never abuse their position with arrogance. Instead, they achieve a genuine respect by their own integrity and courtesy. Thus, today's teachers provide more than knowledge. They give the youth of this nation an example of the benefits achieved in a wholesome soul and a creative mind. They give youths their first insight into the adult world. The student is shown the requirements for life in todayis society. By this molding of students' characters, our teachers have a personal and powerful hand in forming future generations. They are the ones who have tried and always will try to provide a better world through better people. Now. on behalf of the graduating class of 1965, I would like to break the image of the ungrateful senior by giving these unselfish donors of knowledge our heartiest, ':Thanks, for making us better people. PAUL BANNISTER 1 16 CLASS WILL We, the class of 1965, being totally insane and having no memory at all, nev- ertheless do hereby make our last will and testament. Ruth Cicciu leaves first place in graduation line to her sister, and Paul Currier leaves signs, alarm clocks, tents, and sleeping bags to the underclassrnen to keep the office guessing. Dave Orndoff leaves one tarpaper shack to his grandmother. Paul Bannister leaves one slightly used test tube of nitric acid and the number zero to Mr. Kelley. Jack Garden leaves for Florida the day after graduation. Al Cuoco leaves Lillian Pi- azzola a barrel of wine, a pot of lasagna, and a Plymouth convertible with a case of the hiccoughs. We, as a class, pass on to Mr. Gallucci: a bag of Tootsie Rolls, a private ofHce with accommodations for either collegians or rats, and a million dollars. To the office we leave peace, to the Juniors we entrust our money, to the Sophomores we leave 500 unused golf balls, and to the Freshmen we leave our good looks. To Mr. Driscoll we leave a promise of never returning, and to Mr. Sullivan we leave a long list of stunts that will never be tried again. AL COUCO CLASS HISTCRY Regardless of what impression we as a class may leave, one thing is certain - we have created some vivid memories during our four years as students of Wil- mington High. It will be many years before another class will come along that will be as creative or as spirited as the class of 1965 has been. Thus, we may re- view with pride our accomplishments of the ast four years. In September of 1961, we returned to sclifool, but now we were freshmen and thus accorded more privileges. ln the spring of our freshman year, we held our first class meeting where Mr. Sullivan was introduced as our class advisor. At a later meeting we elected Kenneth Butler as president, Bruce Camber as vice-presi- dent, Frances DeLisle as secretary, and Keith Gunning as treasurer. During our sophomore year, we were given more of an opportunity to partici- pate in the school activities. Elected that year as class officers were Kenneth But- 1l8 I ler, president, Janet Harrison, vice-president, Frances DeLisle, secretary, and Keith Gunning, treasurer. In December came our Hrst opportunity to work to- gether on a class activity, our Christmas dance, the Candy Cane Twist. By our junior year, it became evident that our class was well on the way to making a name for itself. Because of the variety of personalities to be found in our class, we were equally successful in the classroom and on the athletic field. The class officers we selected to guide us through so important a year were Rich- ard Page, president, Albert Cuoco, vice-president, Frances DeLisle, secretary, and Maria Ferrara, treasurer. A profound sadness descended upon the students of W.H.S. in the wake of President Kennedy's assassination. Out of respect to his memory, we postponed our Thanksgiving Dance. Our rescheduled dance, the Plymouth Rock, was the Hrst activity of the new year, held on January 18, 1964. All our efforts were next concentrated on preparations for the Junior Prom. On March 20, the gym was transformed into a scene of underwater fantasy for HA Night in the Blue Lagoon. Patricia jaquith presided as our queen. Her atten- dants were Dotty Hersom, Francine Lynch, Barbara McLain, Charlotte Rich, An- ita Rosa, and Mary Torredimare. As spring approached, we anticipated that week which we could call our own. Excitement mounted as everyone waited to see if we could outclass the seniors. By the week's end everyone had to concede that we not only outclassed them, but had conducted one of the most successful junior Weeks in the history of W.H.S. On Monday, May 25, our banquet was held during which Mr. McMahon pres- ented awards to those students who had obtained the highest averages in their classes. Tuesday was Tag Day. On Wednesday we showed our talents for fashion innovation in observance of Crazy Day. The greatest interest, however, centered around our Junior Variety Show. For months the cast had been rehearsing, and as rumors leaked out, everyone decided it might be a show worth seeing. The per- formances surpassed all expectations. Our class displayed their talents in an amazing variety of skits. Who will ever forget that troupe of graceful ballerinas, the wild music of the Discords, or Wilmington's own Beatles? The show was su- pervised by Stuart Silverman and Margaret Harding provided the piano accom- paniment. In no time at all our senior year was upon us. All the class officers whom we had elected in our Junior year remained in office. Our first dance of the year was the Pumpkin Puddin, which was held on October 29. Under the direction of Miss Fowler, the Senior Play, 'fThe Peace Corps Girls was held December 10 and 12. Against the exotic panorama of a native Phillipine village, the cast gave an excel- lent performance. Our second dance of the year was the Ventricle Venture, held on February 12. Some of the more daring members of the publicity committee hung a sign on the school announcing the dance to all passers-by. Graduation practice commenced the week we returned from vacation. When Mr. McMahon was Hnally satisfied that we no longer looked like potato farmers, the boys brought a fitting end to the entire episode by burying Barbara's baton. The Hnal week of school brought to a close our class activities. On Wednesday, June 2, the Senior Banquet was held. June 4 was the date of the Senior Prom, held at the Hillview Country Club in North Reading. It marked the first time a class had held its prom outside the school. Graduation exercises were held on une 6. J As a class we have much to be proud of. We realize that we owe much of our success to the advice of our advisor, Mr. Sullivan, and our guidance advisor, Mr. Gallucci. Let us continue the successful story of our life as a class into the histo- ries of our own lives. JOAN DRAHEIM CLASS PRCPHECY Now Channel Seven interrupts its regularly schedule to present this program of vital importance: Well, here we are, ladies and gentlemen, at the world famous Firnedly,s Res- taurant, where the Wilmington High School Class of 1965 is celebrating its 10th 119 reunion. Here is CBS reporter, the former editor of the Alpha, Miss Joyce Drew, who will interview and comment on the famous personalities here tonight. Take it away, Miss Drew. Good evening. Tonight our guest of honor is the President of the United States, Richard Page. Mr. Page, could you tell us what the other class officers are doing with themselves lately? Well, that man wearing the cwalking billboard' type of sign is Al Cuoco, my vice-president. He's campaigning for next term and his slogan is 'Don't be a Goupf Maria Ferrara owns an Italian Restaurant, where she butters up spaghetti like she used to do with teachers. Fran DeLisle is a secretary, who is also a week- ly contestant on Community Audition. f'How have our athletes done, Mr. Page? f'Just fine. On the Boston Patriots we have produced fullback Jim Newhouse, quarterback Bill Ritchie, halfback Pat Lippiello, water-boy, Bob Nolan, and trainer, Mike Kasabuski. Jeffis still in those same old red-striped long johns he wore in our class play. And here come our class sweet- hearts, Ann Fuller and Lynn Billings - still holding hands after all this time! Alice Perry, Ruth Ciccui, Sheila Wallace, Beverly Ayotte, and Nancy Hall are all school teachers, who tell jokes like Mr. Kelley, scratch their noses like Mr. Hamilton, and get kids out of trouble like Mr. Gallucci. Dolores Enos, Janis Iovanna, Barbara McLain and Nancy Henderson are all successful nurses who also tell Kelley type jokes, just to needle the patients. Wayne Gardner is still wearing his orange socks, but still insists he's collegiate. Paul Bannister is Dean of Slippery Scum College, and Judy Croke owns a most successful frog hatcheryfl 'fWell, we certainly do have a star-studded class, Mr. President, and we can contribute it all to you because, after all, you were the one who always told us to smarten up at our class meetingsf' HI don,t deserve all the credit, Miss Drew. That gray-haired man over there helped us too. That's Mr. Sullivan, the famous Irish chemist. Now, the Discords, featuring Tommy Hand, Glenn Milley and Owen Marr will conclude this, our tenth reunion, with a selection which has been near and dear to all of us-our own class song, 'Louie, Louie,' after which we shall return to our regularly scheduled program.
