But the slow start was offset partly by the very able leadership of Coach Frank Kelley, Assistant Coach Sal Albano, and the Co- Captains, Jon Fairfield and Paul O'Leary, who were responsible for the team's growing increase in strength. The second meet was a trouncing for our team, Dracut scor ing 73W points out of 95. But then came a high point of glory with a triumph over Methuen. Over the past two years, the National Honor Society has been an active school or- ganization. Its Members, chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service, have sponsored many activities. While working, as well as having fun, the group beneits many students. ln this way, people know that the group is really func- tioning properly. Under the leadership of Mr. Vincent Gallucci, newly appointed advisor, the first year began with a pen sale. The money raised from this new and successful proiect was later put into the High School Scholarship Fund. In February, and induction ceremony for all the new members was held during school in the auditorium. That evening all the Na- tional Honor Society members and their proud parents were guests of the School Com- mittee at a banquet. The new town manager, Mr. Bouchard, was guest speaker at one of the Society's meetings in December. Later in the year, the members served as ushers and usherettes on Open House nights. Our annual outing was ci trip to the Pops , no one will forget that evening. The following year was also a very productive one for the Society. A regional con- ference was held at Wilmington High in order to stimulate and exchange ideas among the surrounding National Honor Societies. In February the organization conducted a book fair, the first in the school's history. This proiect was overwhelmingly successful. The banquet and annual induction ceremony for new members were held in the follow- ing month. ln the spring, the senior girls acted as usherettes at the teachers' musical comedy, Pushcarts. With the proceeds of this year's proiects, the society established its vwn scholarship fund, We, the seniors of '64, take great pleasure in acknowledging our National Honor Society, IS 'SX I 0 o Q S- X ,ff 99 fb ,,.,. Dionne MorTelliTi 108 SALUTATGRY FOUND IN LILLIPUT Members of the School Committee, Mr. Shed, Mr. IvIcMohon, Porents, Reverend Clergy, fellow clossmotes ond invited guests: lt is ci greot honor for me in behcilf of the cloiss of l9o4, to welcome you to our groduotion exercises. These grciduotion exercises bring to ci close our high school doys, which by your ever present love, devotion, ond potience hove prepored us for our tomorrow. Eoch one of us hos been the object of cdreful considerotion ond guidonce, eoch one hos felt the wcirmth of your proise - even your displeosure when neccessory. These ore but o few of the rewording feoitures of o Lillipution kingdom os ours, ond such wos the cose until in the edrly l94O's o chonge took ploce which colored not only the business world, but the educotionol field os well - thot is, the trend toword lorge scole begon. The boom in the business brought lorger industriol plonts ond o greoter lobor force, lorger fomilies necessitoted lorger schools to olleviote the fost growing clossrooms. In the midst of oll this exponsion people become lost in the crowd, they become numbers insteod of nomes, oi nonentity without identity solve to the very few whom they come into doily contoct. It is little wonder, therefore, thot ci few hordy individuols rebelled ond in the lote l94O's those who resented losing their individuolity turned to the smoller estcibiishment, mony moving to the smoller communities of the suburbs, where they could once ogoin experience oi sense of belonging ond shoring. This some feeling corried through into the schools, where o student become once ogoin o nome rother thon o number, ond in such on interested ond friendly envi- ronment could more etfectuolly show oFf ony speciol gift or tcilent which otherwise moy hove been overlooked in the lorger system. And yet, despite the lock of size ond oipporent lock of big-city sophisticotion, there wos no concern of not being port of the lorger world. On the contrciry, mony gifted students of o retiring ond hesitont noture, becoiuse of the odditionol guidonce ond direction permitted in such on informol ond understonding environment, undoubtedly goined more confidence, greoter poise, ond the obility to perform more oideguotely thon ever would hove been possible under more crowded ond formol conditions. Becouse of the feeling of security engendered by the interoction between student ond foculty, there wos in the student body on esprit de corps - o one-for-oll ond oll-for-one bond, so bodly needed in the world todoy. This loyolty extends not only to speciol friends, or toword homeroom, but to the school os o whole. Ecich new endeovor is whole-heoirtedly supported - no one is left out for ony reoson. lnsteod, eoch ond every one sees himself os necessoiry ond vitol to the success of the projects. This, indeed, is o for cry from the lorger school, where often times the some clique bond together to initiote pet proiects, which ore supported or not, occording to their ottroction to the rest of the student body. l,'for one of very mony, reolize the vorious woys I hove benefited in being ci mem- ber of the smoll, interested school. I should like to thonk oll who hove so obly guided ond directed me during these post four yeors. I do indeed feel fortunote to be counted omong those found in Lilliput. Bcirboro Burnhom 109 CLASS ESSAY TODAY, TOMORROW AND THE DAY AFTER Today, June 7th, in the year nineteen hundred and sixty-four, we, as the current seniors of Wilmington l-ligh School are graduating. This ceremony marks an occasion which all of us will remember with mixed emotions, Many of us are indeed happy at the thought of no more pencils, no more books. Yet we must be for a moment sad at the thought of leaving all of the people we have become acquainted with during the years we have struggled toward this goal. After our departure from this high school, we may never again see many of those whom we have come to know and to love. Today marks the end of an important period of our lives, the period during which we learn those things that will help us to mature and adiust to life in our modern world. Some of us will have the opportunity to further our education, while for many, all formal education comes to an end. Tomorrow when we waken, how will we feel, know- ing that at last we are on our own in a world which expects to receive more than it will give? Tomorrow then, signals our entrance into the world of adults, with whom we will be competing for iobs, seats on the subways, and recognition as individuals in our own right. We all have an equal opportunity to succeed in whatever we attempt - or do we? When we go looking for a job, is there a possibility that the color of our skin, our nationality, our party affiliations, or our very religion will affect our chances of finding one? It would seem from the many things we read and hear today, that such is some- times the case. I can not imagine why one person would pass judgement on another, determining the other to be less than a desirable working partner or social companion for any of the reasons already mentioned. We were all given a brain to reason with, and what an unbearable world this would be if all of us were to come to the same conclusions, right or wrong, about such important things as religion and politics. Certainly no one, after any amount of due consideration, could bring suffering to another human being because he was born in another country or with a different pigment in his skin, for in the final analysis, people are very much the same the world over. Fathers worry about supporting their families. Mothers worry about giving their children all the things they never had grow- ing up. Teenagers are concerned with discovering who and why they are. Children are concerned with themselves, mainly and anyone else rarely, Surely, we as Americans, born in a country wrought with the sweat and blood of people from all over the world, should be able to be, if not loving, at least tolerant of those from other countries and of races different from ours. During the last few months, our Senate has been the scene of constant debating over a Civil Rights Bill. This bill, if signed into law, will provide for the legal enforcement of our right as individuals to live where we choose, to eat where we wish, and to work at any iob we are capable of doing. l-low tragic it seems that we must legislate to bring about the acceptance of two concepts which should already be considered as truths and thus practiced by everyone - specifically, the right of each of us to be free, and our right to equality in the eyes of the law and our fellow man. ln many areas and in many hearts, these basic concepts, upon which our country was founded, are not held to be true. As a result, today's adults face many problems which should never have developed. Tomorrow these same problems will still exist, and we as tomorrow's adults, will have to stand up to them and attempt to End their solutions. There is always hope, however. Perhaps the Day After will bring with its dawn the ansffers to these and other problems facing our nation. Meanwhile, for today and tor-iorro -i.' 1, you and I can use our education in an all-out effort to make this world a better place to live in. May we all have the strength of character to fight for freedom, justice, and equality until the Day After arrives. Thank You, Jeanne Anderson 110 CLASS ILL ' We, the Class of 1964, of Wilmington High School in the town of Wilmington, and in the state of Massachusetts, being of sound mind and body, do hereby publish our last will and testament. To the Faculty - we leave a long sigh of relief in seeing us depart and go into the worlds of business and college. Also - an incoming batch of new faces and names to memorize, along with roomfuls of paper planes and spitballs. To the Juniors - we leave our places of prestige along with an ever-present, empty feeling of having no Big Brothers to look up to, have fun with, and enjoy. Also - best wishes for a senior year full of activities and memorable times. To the Sophomores - we leave two more grueling years of pampering, detention, and teachers! To the Freshmen - we leave our follies and advice for a united class with an abun- dant treasury to fulfill the needs of the next three years. Carole Aberle leaves Mr. Shiere peace and quiet until he has her sister in class. Pat Adams leaves Johnny's and her place in the WHS parking lot to any one who wants it. Harriet Alexander leaves reluctantly. Helen Allen leaves the commercial course to Ginny. Dennis Ames leaves a Beatle wig to anyone brave enough to wear it. Keith Arnold leaves his exceptional basketball skill to brother Bruce. Jance Baldwin leaves a week of sleep to Mr. Kelley to use sparingly during report card time and to National Honor Society, tickets for the Pops. Beverly Barcellos leaves Ann Fuller a smashed megaphone and laryngitis for next year's football games. John Bevilacqua leaves football shirt, No. 36, to another family to wear for seven more years and a big smile to anyone who thinks he can fill it. Joan Bishop leaves a year's supply of carrots to Mr. Sullivan and best wishes to a certain Junior for a great and enjoyable senior year. And to her sister, all the track meets in the next two years. Don Blomerth leaves one bag of dandruff to Mr. McMahon. Eileen Bradley leaves her old first-aid bandage to any Junior who thinks it's easy to tie a knot. Russell Brady leaves his fine sense of humor, his crib sheets, and a pile of fingernails found in the first row, second seat in Mr. Sullivan's room. Gerard Bruno leaves Mr. McMahon his best Beatle wig. Walter Buckley leaves Mr. McMahon a bottle of hair tonic for his Beatle wig. Barbara Burnham leaves Mr. Kelley to play with his tinker toys. Valerie Camber leaves her father's hot DKW with its dent in the fender, its horn that honks when you turn around, and its squeaky wheel bearings to any underclass- man who hates to ride to school on the sardine can. Susan Cosman leaves her place in the lunch line, for all its worth, to any short- legged, slow running, but very hungry junior girl. May she succeed in cutting in line throughout the year more than l did. Esther Corum and Martha Zaverson leave all of their unused fouls to Tana and Sharon. Barbara Del Visco leaves Mr. Shiere all her high bookkeeping marks for the next lucky senior. Marlene Galka and Ann Hoban leave their unopened Business English books for someone to open. Wayne Gaulzetti leaves to Doug Sid Dayton a new referee whistle that won't stick, and all the patience he will need for the boys down the North Intermediate School. Dianne Mortelliti leaves a seat on Bus i-l',5 to Marion Ridley, her A's to her brother Francis, and her love of Math to Mr. Kelley, and her heart to Miss Sharp. Norman Norton, upon his departure from this institution, bequeaths to those who remain the following items: the hours between iO PM to 3 AM for the completion of term papers, the privilege of becoming drenched with water, burned with acid and bunsen burners, and electrocuted, in the name of science and the lab report, all the lab equipment that won't work, the enjoyment you will derive from friendships that arise from the common tortures to which you will be subjected, and the friendly at- mosphere of this school. To those teachers who have a deiciency of them, he leaves smiles in unlimited number, and to his beloved Math teacher, Mr. Kelley, he leaves some new jokes, as his are somewhat antiquated. He also admonishes students to con- tinue in his tradition of novel solutions to Math problems so that your teachers do not become bored with the same old solutions. Trudy O'Hare leaves Mr. Sullivan one blown glass barometer so that he can demonstrate that air occupies space to another general science class. She also leaves to her brother all of Mr. Kelley's math projects. Genie Paraskeva and Mary O'Connell will Parkhurst to all junior volunteers. 'Cynthia Parrella leaves the candy machine at Metheun High to the girls' varsity basketball team. Gary Phillips leaves Kathy McCue his class pin and wishes for a happy senior year.
