In the latter part of December the council began to prepare a Guide Book- The Blue Beacon, at the suggestion of Mr. Whittredge and Mr. Good. This book will contain all information about the high school rules and regulations, and will be of great help to the incoming Freshmen. Four members of the council were chosen to be present on Bob Clay1on's Record Poll as representatives from Wilmington High School, to present our favorite top tunes. They were: Dorothy Fidler, James Tighe, Gerald Rooney, and Beatrice Fenlon. Miss Elene Farello, faculty advisor to the council, helped us with any problem that had arose. i 'l A - - 1 u ,,, THE ORACLE STAFF Editor-in-Chief-Jean Andersen Assistant Editor--Elaine Christopher Exchange Editor-Dorothy Fidler Sports Social Humor Kathleen Hoban Beverly Rounds Arthur Lynch Ralph Lepore Cynthia Peters James Tighe Albert Ethier Beatrice Fenlon Faculty Reporter-Gerald Rooney Student Council News-Leon Schuler Vacuum Cleaner-James Cuoco The Oracle, our school paper, was published monthly by the Student Council. This paper contained quiz problems, news on sports, social affairs, council news, and the circulation school gossip. Miss Farello and Miss Marland checked all the material be-fore it was sent to the typeroom to be printed. t f s ' . if Y ART CLASS The Art class, under the direction of Mrs. Evelyn R. Andersen, Art Supervisor, has met in the Student Activity Room every Monday. Block printing and textile painting were two mediums new to Wil- mington High School students this past year. Christmas cards were designed and cut from linoleum blocks then printed with pressure. Handker- chiefs, luncheon sets, blouses, ties and aprons were decorated. Pastels, water colors and posters comprised the remaining year's work. Exhibits were held in November and March during Open House. Much interest was displayed during these showings by parents, teachers and students. Corridor window displays were featured periodically through- out the year. SENIOR TYPISTS The typeroom was always filled with material and typists. All the work of the Yearbook, the Oracle, the teachers, or members of the community was handled by the eiiicient girls and boys of the Senior Type Class, under the supervision of Mrs. Stanley Webber, head of the Com- mercial Department. They won one game and lost nine. Although the girls didn't win many of the games played, they certainly had fun trying. Girls on the Varsity Team were: Co-Captains, Shirley Smith, Dorothy Fidler. Managers: Bettyann Hourihan, Rachel Bourbeau and Arlene Muse. . h . H1555 1952 BASKETBALL TEAM In returning to the Suburban League, Wilmington quintet opened its season on December 20, at Dracut. After a rugged battle, Dracut was victorious by a 33-27 score. Wilmington joumeyed to Burlington on Janu- ary 2, the Wilmington five winning its Hrst and only league game in a close 34-32 overtime game. January 4 brought Wilmington and Tewks- bury teams together on Tewksbury home court. With seconds left in an overtime period Tewksbury was the winner 38-36. On January 8, Wil- mington met Burlington for the second time. Burlington avenged the earlier defeat winning 37-34. Wilmington invaded a Champion Billerica Hve on January 11 and were handed a 65-23 loss. Tewksbury gave Wil- mington another close beating 52-48, on January 25. In the next engage- ment Wilmington met Chelmsford. This quintet proved too powerful win- ning by a 30-37 score. In the second meeting between Billerica and Wil- mington, Wilmington was overpowered by a 76-19 margin. February 5, Wilmington was nosed out by Dracut quintet 55-46. In the final game of the season, Wilmington again encountered the Chelmsford quintet, Wilmington coming out on short end of a 65-30 score. CHEERLEADERS Under the guidance of Miss Mulcahy and Mr. McMahon, the present cheerleaders sponsored several successful Saturday night football dances during the 1951 season. The custom of running Saturday night dances has been carried on for the past three years. 1st row - Virginia Stevens, Maryann Curtin, Dora Bourgeois, Ann Moriarty. 2nd row - Barbara Froton, Margie Calnan, Mary Letellier, Ann Bennett, Lois Hollien, Dorothy Fidler, Shirley Smith, Ruth Motschman. -5 'km X, f. igh'I'! The following Saturday, Wilmington was again in the win column by beating Somerville Vocational 13 to 0. Unfortunately the next week Wilmington was trounced by a powerful Dracut team with a 31 to 7 score. The third game away brought Wil- mington and Johnson together. Johnson won by a disputed 14 to 7 score. The longest journey ever made by a Wilmington team was to Northbridge where they were on the bottom of a tough 19 to 12 score. Then Wil- mington was invaded by Chelmsford and suffered a 25 to 7 defeat. In a non-league game Wilmington visited Phillips Academy. Despite a hard fight Wilmington lost by a 20 to 14 margin. Bouncing back, Wilmington overpowered a highly confident Pinkerton Academy by 31 to 12. In the rival game of the year a heavier Tewksbury team handed Wilmington a 20 to 7 decision. In the final game of the season, Wilmington, much to the amazement of the Alumni, came out with a 6 to 0 victory. 1951 Foo'rBALL ToUcHDowNs No. Wilmington 24 Burlington 0 Weston Draper 7 Wilmington 13 Somerville Trade 0 Jere Melzar 5 Wilmington 7 Dracut James Tighe Wilmington 7 Johnson Albert Ethier Wilmington 12 Northbridge Raymond Clifford Wilmington 7 Chelmsford Francis Hoban Wilmington 14 Phillips Academy J .V. Student Council James Cuoco Beatrice Fenlon Kathleen Hoban Arthur Lynch Cynthia Peters Q H055 K LO I HISTORY We the class of '52 entered high school in September of 1948. As I can recall, our feelings were a mixture of amazement and hope. In our Freshman year, we were given the privilege of electing class officers. They were as follows: President, Janet Backmang Vice-president, Ralph Leporeg Secretary, Louise Moriartyg Treasurer, Robert Hamilton. Our Student-Council representatives were: Beatrice Boyd, Bryant Bedell and Ralph Lepore. It took us a while to settle down, but once we got settled in the routine school life, our problems became very simple. That year we participated in the Curtis Magazine drive, and for the first time we had a sense of belonging. We were also privileged in our first year of high school life to have a class day. The class journeyed on bicycles to Foster's Pond in North Wil- mington. The whole class of '52 will hold this in their memories. At last, we reached our half-way mark. We were now Sophomores. We had by now become accustomed to rules and regulations. Under the guidance of Miss Moriarty we elected our class oflicers as follows: President, Janet Backmang Vice-president, James Tigheg Secre- tary, Jean Andersen, Treasurer, Louise Moriarty. We chose the following people to represent us on Student Council: Patricia Pilcher, Robert Ham- ilton and Ralph Lepore. During this year we welcomed the following mem- bers to our class: Joan and Frances Brennick, and Walter Rogers. At Christmas we held our first dance. It was our first chance to entertain the student body and we made a success of it. This year saw many changes in our faculty with the addition of Mr. Palmieri, Miss Horner, Miss Henchy and Mr. Whittredge. Mr. Pillsbury, Miss Gleason, Mr. Dempsey and Mr. Ambrose left the faculty staff. In the fall of 1950 we became upper classmen, electing the following class officers. President, James Tigheg Vice-president, Lee Bull, Secretary, Dorothy Fidlerg Treasurer, Jere Melzar. This year our boys contributed to the football team. Being Juniors the girls were permitted to try out for cheerleading and five were chosen. We welcomed Shirley Willworth to our class. For our class jeweler we selected Deigest 81 Clust, who provided us with our Senior class rings. We also selected Purdy as our class photog- rapher. Once again, we were subjected to changes in our faculty, adding Miss Bedell. Miss Moriarty left the faculty staff. Then came the best part of high school, we were now Seniors. A lot of us had definite plans for the future. Some would go on to college and others would face the world and make a living. This was a happy yet sad year, because we were now drawing to a close our whole school life. This year was more thrilling to us than any other, because it meant we were the second class to graduate from the New High School. In the new high school we had many more advantages. This new building meant much, especially to the commercial students. It offered a new office machines room. And many other advantages over the old high school. Our Senior class officers were President, Ralph Leporeg Vice-president, Jean Fenlong Secretary, Dorothy Fidlerg Treasurer, Shirley Smith. Our student council representatives were: Jean Andersen, Dorothy Fidler, James Tighe, Elaine Christopher, and Ralph Lepore. This year, for the first time, we were shown how a real election was held. We were allowed to carry on our election in the same manner. It was a good and practical experience for everyone concerned. This year also we held a town meeting at Villanova Hall. This was experience by which everyone benefited. We the class of '52 would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Mr. Whittredge who has done such wonderful work in getting jobs for the students. We would also like to extend our thanks to Miss Marland, our class advisor, and Mrs. Webber who has done such line work in our commercial department. As our graduation and reception are drawing very close, we should like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the faculty and student-body for their co-operation. BARBARA GORDON PROPHECY The plane flew low as it neared Wilmington Airport. Looking out of the plane window, I could see most of the buildings, some of which were new to me, and others, very familiar. One of the most familiar was the high school, with its massive athletic fields, and great auditoriums. I re- membered the graduating class of 1952. As the plane came in for a landing, stewardesses JEANNE FENLON and PRISCILLA PALMER cautioned everyone to fasten all safety belts. Businessman RAYMOND CLIFFORD turned pale at the thoughts of land- ing, and his pretty wife, PATRICIA BLANCHARD quieted the little ones. Sitting behind them were that famous singer of western blues, WESTON DRAPER, his lovely assistant, SHIRLEY ANSTEY, and her sister-in-law, BEATRICE WHALEN. From the back of the plane came the shouts and cheers of six marines: BRYANT BEDELL, EVERETT COLE, WILLIAM DALTON, THOMAS FOLEY, JOSEPH LACRETA, and JAMES MACDON- ALD. My, but they were glad to get away from the stern discipline of their commanding ollicers, DAVID MANSON and KENT BLAISDELL! When we were on the ground, everyone hurried from the plane into the airport cafeteria and lounge. MARY CREHAN was serving soft drinks at a bar, and PRISCILLA LYONS was serving sandwiches. On the wall, in a colorful advertisement for orange juice, were DONALD FLEMING and LEE BULL. Town Manager, CORNELIUS LEWIS stood admiring the advertisement, but cafe owner DONALD BREWSTER, and his part- ner, ARNOLD BISHOP, remarked that it didn't look believable. At the Information' Booth, MARJORIE MILLS was giving directions to a poor, lost traveler twho turned out to be ROGER QUANDTJ. The other informa- tion clerk, LILLIAN TEMPLE, was busy watching the newlyweds JEAN ANDERSEN and GREGORY HAKEY, make their reservations for Tewksbury Inn. After eating, I decided to freshen up, and went to the ladies' lounge. As I opened the door, I heard a thud! BEATRICE BOYD was on the floor looking for Air-Mail stamps and happened to be in front of the door as I opened it. Registered Nurses, FERN KELLY and NANCY TROW, helped her up. General ELINORE DONAHUE of the Wacs told me I should be more careful, and she and privates FRANCES BRENNICK, CYNTHIA DICKENSON, DOROTHY HARNISH, and JOAN BRENNICK followed the general out. I, too, decided it was time to leave. I then took a cab to the square and slipped the cab driver, DANIEL COSMAN a dollar. From the square, I walked to the department store where movie starlets DOROTHY FIDLER and MARYANN CURTIN were modeling ladies' clothing. Manager ROBERT HAMILTON was busy with his bookkeeping and didn't see housewives MARGARET MCGONDEL and JANICE QUANDT, who were interested in baby clothes. However, MAR- GARET MAcDONALD'S little boy tipped over a can of glue and the man- ager stuck to his customers: From the department store, I simply walked around. LOUISE MORIARTY passed me, carrying her paint and easel, also JEAN BLAN- CHARD, who was quite well known for her art. BETTYLOU GRANT carried music sheets and sang the scale. Ball players BARBARA FROTON and ELIZABETH HOURIHAN were running around, trying to keep in shape. CHARLES WILLIAMS of Williams' Cars, Inc. went by, and as I went to cross the street, a long line of Chryslers and Plymouths went by. It was the wedding party of DORA BOURGEOIS, who was to receive her 'iMRS degree today. LOIS HOLLIEN, MARLENE IWANOWSKI, RUTH MOTSCHMAN, BEVERLY NEAGLE, PAULINE RICHARDS, and SHIR- LEY SMITH gave me a loud hello. They were on their way to Silver Lake, each carrying a bathing suit and suntan lotion. What a wonderful life these secretaries have! JANET BACKMAN was on her way to the lake too, but she was carrying skates! I BARBARA GORDON and MARION CARTER went by in Barb's car , and ELAINE CHRISTOPHER and her husband, Fred, went by in their new convertible. By this time, I was in front of the high school. I could see Professor JOHN DEELEY and Guidance Director, ROBERT SUTTON in their offices. MARBARA CONNOLLY was the chemistry teacher now, and AL- BERT ETHIER in charge of sports. Commercial teacher, EDWARD GILBERT was giving a demonstration of his typing skill, and CATH- ERINE SZUCH was directing the ofiice practice group. Boy Scout Director, WALTER ROGERS, was in the oflice of Superintendent, JAMES TIGHEQ they were trying to decide whether RONALD ULRICKSON, former holly- wood star, would be a good model for scout uniforms. The school had permanent male librarians, THOMAS MAHONEY and JAMES MANUAL. PATRICIA PILCHER had charge of girls' sports. Her main teaching was the art of vocal construction, or how to make noise. It was afternoon, and the sun was hot. I went to an ice cream parlor on Lowell Street, and ordered a sundae. There was a great commotion because the new waitress, PAULINE SURETTE, had caught her hand in the freezer, and the owner, J OANNE REID accused her of trying to steal. Police Chief, FRANCIS HOBAN, was about to arrest both of them when Attorney-at-law, JOHN COOKE, stepped in and settled the problem. I finally got my ice cream and was gulping it down when I saw JEAN LARIVEE come in. She was carrying her comptometer, and talking to policewomen, JOAN HODGDON and SHIRLEY WILLWERTH. It seems BARBARA DARLING was late for work in Woburn, and got a ticket for speeding, but ELEANOR GILLIS was able to bribe the policewomen with a couple of her newly designed hats. Well, by this time, I was thoroughly exhausted from my plane trip and walk, so I decided to go home and crawl into bed. I turned on the radio and listened to the Afternoon Tea Time Toastmaster , RALPH LEPORE and his crooning, and then to Man Against Time , starring the famous radio actor, JERE MELZAR. At last, I was really home in the City of Wilmington.
