Among these are the annual Freshman Frolic, the selling of various novelties, the Saturday night dances, the securing of busses for foot- ball games played outside the city, and the awarding Service Medals, and the awarding of prizes at graduation. After the school was painted, it was the feeling of both the faculty and the student body that the school should continue to loolc tidy and attractive. The Student Council heeded the call and undertook a Keep Your School Clean campaign. Santa Claus and Student Council were synonymous during the 1950 Christmas season. The Christmas Program in the auditorium, the filling of baskets for the poor, and the collection of cards for hospitalized veterans were Santa's gifts. A humanitarian act was performed when this group with the help of the House of Delegates planned the adoption ofa European war orphan. The organization holds membership in The New Castle Student Council Association and The Phila- delphia Suburban Student Council Association. The officers and other Senior members are Marshall Robertson, President, Joanne Kreer, Vice President, Florence Janicki, Secretary, Fred Hurlock, Treasurer, Grant Lowe, Charles Hiseg Gladys Cushing, and Connie Stoeffel. rj, NIH' P-5-5-C-A CONVENTION SENIOR cLAss OFFICERS Q 4 l his l HOUSE OF DELEGAT ES ND xx. All home rooms are represented in this organ- ization. The purpose of the House of Delegates is to serve the school and the community, to assist the Student Council and the Traffic Squad, and to develop co- operation, scholarshio, and citizenship. Each year the members of the House of Delegates present several programs. Two forums which they gave this year were How Our American Schools Compare with Those of Other Countries? and What Are the Effects of Television on High School Students? The former, which consisted of discussions of the Educational Systems of ltaly, Germany, China, Palestine, and Greece was held twice because of its popularity. They also presented the Pearl Harbor Day Assembly which is annually under their direction. Besides these school activities they are active in community projects. To- gether with the Student Council, they made the i950 Community Eund Drive a success in Wilmington High School. The Senior officers are James Brown and James Chung, Co-Presidents, and Bill Crapper, Treasurer. The other Senior members include David Amos, Bonnie Bandiera, Lillie Daugherty, Marvin Berman, Genevieve Davis, Marylou Gawinsl-ci, Mary Lou Gilfoil, Maryanne Hairsine, Lambert Heisler, John Lore, Ann McLearie, Albert DiStephano, James Talmo, Janet Scheing, Barbara Hinton, and Frank Magazino. , r . On a breezy day in September of '48, the gates of the vast stadium at Delaware Avenue and Monroe Street were once again flung open as we, three hundred-fifty bewildered spectators, groped along to our seats - - some of us to remain spectators and some to be participants in the all-star, all-event game. It did not take us very long to find out that Seat 209 was not next toSeat 210, and that an elevator was not available to reach the upper tiers. After getting situated, we settled back in our seats to hear Commissioner Fulmer's welcoming address, after which he threw out the first ball to start the game rolling. Behind the plate, Chief Umpire Allen bellowed a familiar cry, Play Ball! The inning began with a bang in the form of the Freshman Frolic, which was closely followed by the get-acquainted party for our own team. These events started us off on the right foot and laid the foundation which was to play an important part in our future. The first hits were garnered when Marshall Robertson and Margaret Geiszler were elected battery-mates of our Sophomore Players. Hardly had we settled back and stopped cheering when we were confronted be a class party. This proved to be good strategy for it brought a large turnout that really went for extra bases. Now came the play that brought the crowd to its feet, the Memorial Day Assembly. Pitcher Marshall Robertson lef off by extending greetings to the three participating clergymen, the Reverend Donald Mayberry, The Very Reverend Dr. Thomas A. Lawless, ancl Rabbi Jacob Kraft. This play, as you may recall, followed the traditional pattern that the Memorial Day program be presented by the Sophomore Athletes. The final spark ofthe inning came when Joanne Kreer was sent in to pinch- hit as an eleventh year officer with Marshall Robertson still batting clean-up. We scored again in the second inning with the Thanksgiving Day Assembly in which the combined talents of the band and glee-club, along with the honored guest, The Reverend Mr. Francis J. Tierney of St. Mary's R.C. Church, cleared the bases with a program that will never take a backseat in our memory. With the aid of Coach Gause, the eleventh year class party proved to be a sure bet, as a large number witnessed the rally. B,qp44y 44! ' -iBKINGiNG uae-AE THE Bpicow -1 Now came the act that produced a rousing hand from the crowd. This, of course, was a base-clearing double that struck a sign on the outfield wall which read What Every Woman Knows . The fans remembered this out-standing play for weeks to come. Later Bob LaFazia and Doc Russo became high scorers in the inning when they led our school to victory over P.S. du Pont for the third consecutive time and brought home the Governor Bacon Trophy. i .. l Q l o4Q,5wl loci l o X, Toward the end of the inning, as the spectators cheered frantically, most 1 If 1' of them noticed many celebrities throughout the huge stadium and decided that now was the time for autographs. The sights that they saw and the thrills that they experienced will be imbedded in their memories for many years to come. The biggest spurt and the most exciting one, came on a home run that was belted into the Gold Ballroom, and burst into the Senior Prom. Brilliant strategy was employed when Jack Garnett was contracted to furnish the music. The final performance of the game was literally a grand slam homer . This event was witnessed in the Armory by hundreds of proud parents who had waited for years for this event to come. They sat there beaming with pride and happiness as each watched his favorite player reach home plate safely. As the crowd left the stands, their minds were full of thoughts for the future. One goal had been reached, but this was only the beginning of a drive which was to make this team the future leaders of America. ,224 r WUMARNY 'TNG WS'- -,ii5'5- - . a - -- 11,07 if A . xv Q5 47 , di Q 1 xg I Se it Qi fn' W K9 K - f' 55 wt 5 - if f Mf f f W4mc , y A s L I il , if 51 Q CLASS lDl20i5i4liq3y 4- 5 C KX 4- f l D 'gp O ze I 6 r iz .,V,m7 .S V . , Lhcr? To be eligible for membership in the society, a student must have an average of at least UB . Admission to the society is based upon character, scholarship, effective leadership, and service within the school. Pupils showing greatest evidence of these qualities are elected to membership. The entire faculty and the members of the Honor Society vote on the eligible list, and a committee of teachers considers those ranking highest in these two votes. Each semester there is elected a number not to exceed l5'76 of the graduating class. The symbols of the Honor Society are the keystone, which signifies stability, and the torch, which signifies the searching light of truth. Perhaps one of the nicest highlights of the organization is the Honor Society Washington Trip. Not far behind in popularity, especially with the student body, is the Honor Society As- sembly. All members of the society participate in this assembly to which their parents and the student body are invited. The main purpose of the society is to raise the standards of the school. This is shown through their excellent co-operation with the Student Council and the House of Delegates. The student judges who are selected for their honesty, ability to make fair decisions, and willingness to serve, are in charge of the sessions which are held for fifteen minutes each day after school. All tardy students must report to the late court, but those who have a legitimate reason for their tardiness are not penalized. Others are detained in proportion to the number of times they have been tardy. This system assures each student of equal justice. The Seniors who have served as judges of the Late Court are Millie Weigle and Phyllis Wingate. CAROLINE M. FITZWATER CLUB OF THE FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America, under the direction of Miss Mary Ridings, was begun in Wilmington High School in I949. The purpose of the club is to help students know more about teaching and to provide in- formation about opportunities in various fields of edu- cation. It also encourages the members to cultivate in themselves the qualities of personality and character, which are foundations of teaching. The members become acquainted with the inspiring story of schools and the ja-cjrt they have played in the development of democratic i e. This year the club has participated in several inter- esting projects, one of which was the meeting of the city and suburban F.T.A. Clubs at P.S. dupont High School. During American Education Week the organi- zation arranged a display in the show case and issued special bulletins with the following topics for homeroom discussions: Responsibilities of the Citizen Urgent School Needs Opportunity for All Home-School-Community Teamwork The officers and other Senior Members are Barbara Lynch, President, Virginia Benator, Vice President, Barbara Ley, Charles Nowlin, Stanley Crewe, James Chung, Millie Weigle and Phyllis Wingate. LIBRARY SQUAD A library squad of thirty-five to forty pupils, under the direction of Miss Mary C. Ridings and Miss Frances R. Goldstein, is organized each year to assist with the procedures in the library. Selection is based on willing- ness to serve and on ability to maintain a satisfactory scholastic record. Group meetings are held periodically throughout the year during the E.C.A. period, but in- struction is mainly individual. Squad members are granted certain library privileges and become eligible for Service Awards in their Senior Year. Two social activities are enjoyed during the year - - a party in the library during the first semester and an outdoor picnic in the spring. The Senior members are Harriet Neville, Mary Vassos, Betty Mihaly, Nancy Lefler, and Joanne Kreer. WILMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL NEWS ln l926, Miss Mary Dennison sponsored the first issue of the Wilmington High School News. This school paper, which has grown from a mimeographed sheet, is sold mainly to students in Wilmington High, it serves as a periodical bulletin of recent school events. To become a member of the staff, a student must have received at least a B average in English by the end of his Sophomore year. As a Junior, he may then enroll in the News English Class from which the staff is later selected. Members of the T951 News Staff, sponsored by Miss Helen Metaxas, are Millie Weigle, Editor-in-Chief, Vir- ginia Benator and Phyllis Wingate, Associate Editors, Jean Wimbrow, News Editor, lrene Lesniczalc, Copy Editor, Alfred Nai and Nancy Saulsbury, Sports Editors, David Amos, Chief Headliner, Margaret Geiszler, Busi- ness Manager, Harriett Thompson and Kathryn Purse, Feature Editors, Alberta Santoro, Art Editor, Florence Jdnicki and Louise Pedicone, Society Editors. Howard Wise has now completed his fourth year as head football mentor at Wilmington High School. Taking over the grid reins at High in 1947 from a coaching position at Woodbury, New Jersey. Mr. Wise has trans- formed a once downtrodden football record into one of the best in the state. ln his first football venture at Wilmington High School, his team managed to tie the much favored Brown Vocational, and to whip A.l., but these games were the only ioy of the '47 season. Familiar with his surroundings now, Coach Wise started to build a team which was later to beat P.S. duPont thrice consecutively. The overall statistics on the Wise-run ball clubs since his arrival read like this: twenty wins, eleven losses, one tie. His friendly nature and broad sense of humor have made him increasingly popular with the student body and faculty. This year's team, running from the T-formation, took time, but when it finally got rolling, it displayed un- touchable class. Losses to non-Wilmington residents once again marred our Red Devils' record. Casting a vote for the top play of the year, Tony Ventresca, a Junior, seems to have provided all the thrills necessary with his twenty-yard gallop in the P.S. clash. It was a play early in the third quarter originating from about the 6 'Q- 1' 'Ti ' 'A . .af ' , .11 ' , 2 ' L K -f xg 9, ff :f 2 1 P x 'Elin' A 1- -12 0, .J-. . Tony swept the right end and would have gone all the way had he not been so close to the sidelines when half of the Dynamiters' squad combined their efforts to push him out of bounds. The last seven yards of this run found Ventresca carrying two would-be tacklers piggy-back. fpoor little boyli Though the P.S. game would draw many votes as the best of the year, nevertheless that giant killer combat with Brown would challenge this rank. After dropping one to Newark and then taking the field against a Brown eleven which tied the yellow-iacketed Newarkers, little more than a moral victory could be expected. As it turned out, Wilmington High trampled a surprised Bear aggregation with a resounding nineteen-zero triumph. Joe Raymond led the way with two touchdowns as he, Ventresca, and D'Agostino put on a dazzling offensive. which startled the Brownies no end. All in all, the 1951 season was a very successful chapter in the football history of Wilmington High. The Senior' boys who helped to write this chapter are Ray Skura, James Sharkey, James Palandrani, Robert Rozenko, Marvin Jester, Serg Griskevich, Lambert Heisler, Joseph Perna, and the co-captains, Richard Russo and Robert LaFazia. 1951 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE W.H.S. Coach Howard Wills' starting quintet was Jim Patton, Al Meizel, Bob Ptak. Ziggy Tyborowski, and Dick Hopkins who, with bench help, com- bined to bring home a thirteen-seven season. Although it was a relatively short team, its height disadvantage was offset by relentless bustling. This year's aggregation had Jim Patton and Al Meizell as co-captains. Patton led the team in individual scoring and was second only to Brown's Fran Fitz- gerald in the New Castle County League. Meizell was fourth in team scoring, but he will be remembered longer for his fine fand very fancy? floor play. This year's Big Five race afforded a great many thrills. There were a number of very close contests and sparkling upsets. Our own record, five wins and three losses, was good enough to share second place honors with P. S. duPont. With the all im- portant second game comir1g up with our cross tovm rivals, the Red Devils stood a chance of sharing top honors with Sallies. A win that night looked assured as Wil- mington High School took an early lead and held it until the dying seconds of the third quarter. P.S. knotted the score at forty-one all and ll'1 the last quarter they stepped into and were never again headed. The six seniors who contributed to this years success are Co-captain Al Meizell, Mat Janicki, Ed Maczynski, Dick Hopkins, James Czajkowski, John Ciritella and managers Sam Brown andHerman Schechinger. 4 J Le if Q,-211 A '-..:l-.-r-, -gs.-Y-, CDT s IEE? Coach Wise's forces, by dunking seven opponents in eight starts, have received an invitation to attend a meet at Swarthmore College and have already competed in one post-season swim in the Eastern lnterscholastics at Princeton. In winning all but one, this year's team bettered the records of all past Vvise led teams. Our only loss was at the hands of Baltimore City College 38 to 37. To become members ot the Leader Corps the girls must pass certain tests, judged by members of the faculty. The candidates are iudged on the basis of four qualities: loyalty, efficiency, initiative, and un- selfishness. The ones who are selected are given a tea in their honor, by the old members. At this tea the new members must display their talents. They are given five minutes to put together a show. When the initiation is over, the girls settle down to a year's work. They not only officiate at the basketball, volleyball, and bad- minton games, but also act as managers and coaches for the homeroom basketball teams. ln addition to these services, they sell refreshments at the football games. The one important occurrence in the life of a Leader Corps girl is the annual party given alter- nately by the Leader Corps of Wilmington High School and that of P.S. du Pont. This event is called Play Day. ln their gym outfits, the girls roller skate, play all sorts of games, and then enjoy refreshments. At the close of the school year a farewell party is held for the Senior members. All in all the organization is described accu- rately by its title - - - The Leader Corps. . This organization was begun in I930 by Mr. Murrey Miller. It was created to furnish the faculty and the student body with trained operators for audio-visual aid equipment. This crew has expanded greatly in the Iast few years. The members, both boys and girls, perform many valuable services. They make it possible for the student body to enjoy dancing in the Boys' Gym at lunch time. The crew handles the Public Address System for all assemblies. In addition to these services the members furnish music for Saturday night dances and for class parties. The Senior members are Charles Hise, James Chung, and Sam Brown. .1 li iillfti WILMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL HI-Y CLUB The Hi-Y Club, an interdenominational club open to all boys of high school age, plays an important part in the life of our student body. The primary purpose of this club is to create, maintain and extend throughout the school and com- munity high standards of Christian character. The members strive to carry out this purpose through serious meetings, interesting wholesome social functions, athletic activities, and projects in community service. Lectures on current topics by prominhnt local citizens, semi-formal dances, splash parties, basketball games, and ping pong tournaments provide a program varied enough to appeal to all types of young people. By providing and dis- tributing baskets at Christmas the Hi-Y promotes community welfare. Opportunity to use originality, imagination, and dramatic talent is afforded by the annual assembly progra.m given in the school auditorium. The symbol, the Y triangle, which stands for spirit, mind and body, encourages its members to develop a well- rounded personality, whereas, the platform clean speech, clean sportsmanship, clean scholarship, and clean living gives its members an incentive to strive for the highest ideals of manhood. The Senior members are Bill Howell, President, Bill Lawson, Vice President, Grant Lowe, Secretary, Stanley Crewe, Treasurer: Phil Wayland, Chaplain, Arthur Holveck, Marshall Robertson, Wallace Lane, David Menser, Fred Hurlock, Marvin Jester, Charles Nowling Russell Hubbs, Donald Aanes- ted, Donald Conner, Dick Jones: Charles Hise, William Hunt, Robert Donnigan, James Brown, Serge Griskevich, Bill Day: Albert Frankel, Joe Camp, Thomas Hoot, Nick Amoroso, Jerry Middleton, and Richard Turochy.
