Separate Ways The nights are warmer, High school days are gone. Soon we will depart. We must smile and move on. It's hard to let go, but it's something we must do. We'll begin new lives, and keep the old memories too. With our special friends, we find it hurts to say good-bye. But we'll meet again, as time continues on by. The loss of four All-Section players and the top two coaches in the area didn t help matters. But the team put together an im- pressive effort and won its second straight Sec- tion title with an overall record of 12 wins and 5 losses. A first round loss to Swissvale ended hopes of a repeat State Championship. Honors achieved include 1st team all section for pitcher Scott Moesta. shortstop Wayne Young and outfield Larry Twigg. Second team went to Brian Kaufman. Todd Shearer, and Da- vid Wilson, while Tom Ryder claimed honorable mention. The section MVP's were Wayne Young and Scott Moesta. 133 Greyhound Track Row I - A. R Kinkela Borowicz proves herself as ‘just one of the boys’ By KAY LEES CUBBAL Sews Sports Writer SEW WILMISGTOS — When most little girls are looking for something to do in their spare time, they play in their sandboxes or seek out their friends from down the street. Buf if a little girl's daddy just happens to own a golf course, dolls and baby buggies are often replaced by putters and drivers. And the more she plays, the better she gets. Such is the case of 17-year-old Wilmington Area High School senior Erin Borowicz. Borowicz. one of eight children of Borland's Par-3 Golf Course owners Richard and Mary Lou Borowicz. will be one of six WPIAL representatives in the PIAA Girls Golf Championship, which will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Carlisle Country Club. BOROWITZ' STORY is unique, because she never had the luxury of a girls' high school team to play on at Wilmington. Instead of not competing at all. she tried out for the boys' team in ninth grade and made it. In IOth grade, she became the sixth (wo)man for the WPIAL Section I champion Greyhounds and. for the past two seasons, she has been a regular starter, play- ing anywhere from the third to fifth position as the Hounds collected their fourth straight league title. She is the first female to ever letter in competition for boys golf at Wilmington. Janie Fassinger and Pat Liposky played with the boys' teams in years past, although they were not permitted by the WPIAL to compete in match play. My brothers were always on the golf teams in high school and I always thought about it a lot. hut I didn't know if I would be good enough. she said. From the time I was about 5-years-old. would gel out my dad's rental clubs and play a couple of holes every day. I started getting better and better and one day. realized the boys weren't beating me by that much. Although she is happy just being a member of her high school team. Borowicz admits taking great delight in beating her male opponents, especially one who may let a snicker or two slip out when she walks onto the course. The guvs on the other teams are usually nice to me. but they kind of take the attitude 'it's okay if you golf with us. just don't heat me, she said. When I do beat them (which she did in 50 percent of her matches this year), they never live it down. Some just walk away as quickly as possible and some stomp off the course without saying a word. WILMINGTON GOLF coach Jim Gruenwald. himself one of the top golfers in the eastern Ohio-western Pennsylvania area, never had any qualms about Borowicz playing for him. She's just another player as far as I'm concerned. Gruenwald said. The guys on our team don’t have any problem accepting her - they're used to her by now and they support her in matches just like they do each other. She must not bother them, because they're just as crude when she's around as they always are. Sometimes the guys on the other team laugh when they see they're matched up against her — that's until she beats them once. he added. Borowicz' caddy in Carlisle will be her high school teammate Rick Kinkela. who played number one for the Greyhounds most of the season. Kinela's father. Richard, is the owner of Rolling Hills Golf Course in Pulaski. If it wasn't for Ricky's help. I probably wouldn't have made it to state. said Borowicz. who is hoping to be offered a golf scholarship for a girls' college team. I'd like to finish in the top 10. but just to be going in the first place is really a thrill for me. courtesy of New Castle News 139 ERIN BOROWICZ 1982-1983 Cheerleading (1 to r) M J Zehner. A Aiken.
