.giofzgomofza Ufiam Qlfiifozy The class of 1954 left dock and began the voyage through New Wilmington High School on September 4, 1951. Re- porting for duty were fifty eager mates. New recruits were David Kaufman and Marilyn and Marlene Lee. Our captain, Miss McCalmont, spent several busy weeks mak- ing sure everyone reached the right classes at the ap- pointed hours, but when the confusion of the new sched- ules cleared away, we started to work in earnest. In search of leadership, we held an 'election result- ing in the choice of the following officers: Robert E. Clark ,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,, , ,. President Elaine Wilken . . Secretary Laura Jane Fowble ,.,,.,,.,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,, T reasurer Our first social engagement was the t'Who's Whou in which we were none other than the honored guests. Then in October we sponsored a square dance with Garrett's Orchestra furnishing the music. In February, we held a party for just the mates and invited guests. Our class was also prominent in many other ship- board activities: musical, athletic and social. Four mem- bers were in the band, twenty-one were members of the Girls' Chorus, and ten of our class comprised the Boys' Chorus. In addition, four were members of the basket- ball team, and two, Eleu and Elaine Wilken, were Junior Varsity cheerleaders. Thelma Barr was honored by being chosen as .in attendant to the Sweater Queen. In order to pad our treasury for coming events, we assessed ourselves dues CS2.00 a yearj and sold candy every Thursday noon. In March, we were sorry to see Carl Detwiler leave, but he was granted his discharge in order that he might move to Indiana.
