Mmif University of New Hampshire Westminster Indiana State Teachers Ohio University University of Pittsburgh Westminster SEVEN EIGHT V 512601 dfaai clfiifoz Here it is, 52 the year we, as seniors, step out into the world on our own. We have been looking forward to this year since we entered the first grade and started on the long process of education, 12 years ago. In this process of education, we have acquired many cherished memories which have made these 12 years an unforgettable portion of our lives. The first few years kept us busy getting acquainted and adjusting ourselves to our classmates and to school life in general. It seemed from the very first that our class was divided into two distinct groups-the boys against the girls. The worst blow against the boys came in the fifth grade when Carol Galbreath championed the cause of women by blowing pepper down the back of Jack Schreckengost's neck. As we grew a little older, we realized that we were too old for such foolishness, and our minds turned to exercising our right of freedom of the press. Thus in sixth grade we began publication of The Sixth Grade Chatter Boxf' A few copies are still in existence and are considered priceless relics by our classmates. Junior High was a completely new adventure which brought, along with many new classmates and new teachers, the very grown-up method of changing classes. Can we ever forget our seventh grade club, Teen Town, which met twice a month at Madeleinels house? Our intentions were good, as anyone could have seen from the by-laws we had set up, but somehow the only things we accomplished were failing to pay our three cents dues per meeting, consuming a goodly amount of refreshments, and smashing one of Fordneyis front windows, the latter of which brought to an end our seventh grade club. We had several exclusive class parties of which Robert McFarland's wiener roasts and our Sadie Hawkins Rox Social take top honors in our memories. At this time, through the noble efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Fuzz Eagleson, our Junior High class advisors, we began our struggle to learn to dance. Also, the word Upost office took on a new meaning about this time. Our initiation into Senior High as sophomores, began the last and perhaps the most important lap of our 12-year program. Our junior year was high-lighted by our magazine selling contest, our junior class play, BIG HEARTED HERBERT, dancing lessons at the gym, and last but not least, our Prom held at Shenango Inn. As seniors, with the help of Miss Dunn, our Senior High class advisor, we again produced a play, this time entitled, THE TERRIBLE TURNERS. Petie did a swell job of helping behind the scenes tif you don't know Petie, see John Muthj Yes, we've worked hard but we've had a lot of fun. So with a lump in our throat and a tear in our eye, we say, So long to Miss Dunn, our other teachers, th parties, and school in general. t'We're sure gonna miss you. That grand old class of '52 departed long ago. Departed? Well, we can't say that, for 'taint entirely true. There's still a humble member who comes back 'cause he ain't through. Bill Sholler is that member. It's too bad we can't assist' Bill's still in Detention Hall for assemblies that he missed. But for the rest of us, we're well upon our separate ways Toward success and happiness and everything that pays. Perhaps the most progressive, a cute one, we'll confess, Is Doris Reynolds, who new has twelve boisterous kids-no less. And would you guess that Carol Galbreath, with brains and looks and all, Has just built up her one-room shack where she'll teach school next fall? Then Janey Clark has found a way to aid some people's faults. Her brand new diaper factory just accommodates adults. Can you believe that Eugene Sheldon fswconj came from this small town? I-Ie's leading man in the Broadway hit, Oh, Romeo. You Clown! Our champion parachutess, Dorothy Kirk, is busy now Teaching young male students just when to jump and how. Remember Mose McGinnis-how neat he used to dress? Well, Mose is now a coal miner and comes home like a messl Just think of Mable, Mose's wife. Shels really got her woes! She has a washing every day of Mose's filthy clothes. Every autumn Bonnie Corey gets a lot of thrills. She's Bailey's star trapezer-as yet, there've been no spills. It seems John Muth has gained great fame for his notorious crime, Announcements say his last escape from jail makes the eighth time' No wonder John's so anxious to gain freedom from the peng He longs to see his faithful wife, Dorothea Clark, again. Ooge Ringer is John's warden. and he's certainly got grey hair Figuring ways to keep John locked and separate that pair! Ruthie Cooper has become a nurse. and passes out the pills: And cheerfully, she makes them all forget about their ills! The champion pigs and chickens here are found at Byers' Dairy. He has to take time every day to call the Hveterinaryf' His veterinary Dezso Somogyi's very blunt. He blames Jim's feed for making pigs lay eggs and chickens grunt! NINETEEN TWENTY Robalee Burns enjoys her work as clerk in Murphy's store. She's in the unmentionable department and claims life's not a bore Joan McConnell has a job of which she is quite proud. Since she's the President's secretary, he really draws a crowd! All Eskimos in Iceland claim Bob Creighton is their hero. A grand new apple he produced can grow well below zero! Dale Jennings has discovered a new odorless cigar. He says the ladies like him better when he smells less sour. Gladys Barr is known as Hap, for she grins all the while. She's getting paid for advertising that Pepsodent smile! Theda King is home from England, Visiting this town. Shels a special beautician to Her Majesty, the Crown. Corruption! That's a has-been thing since Paul Withrow's around. A lawyer whois more honest now-a-day cannot be found. Front page! Ya recognize her in that new French bathing suit? It's our Madeleine Fordney. QThe judges say she's cute!j That bathing suit's another thing that you should hear about. Its designer, Virginia Roman, has much talent, without a doubt. Our mailis delivered faster since Rich Scott lately became Postmaster General, and you'll find that Speedy's his new name. There're few divorces now since Jean Titus no longer roams. As marriage counselor, she has certainly saved a lot of homes. Betty Maughan has published her new cook book Gals please read How very easy you can nab a fellow with good feed. Hey, television fans! Don't miss the show this Saturday night. Fern Stonebraker, the bonebraker, will wrestle a good fight! Bob McFarland couldn't stand to miss a single County Fair. He displays all his prize stock. Competitors-beware! Lyle Garrett has a truck farm, and he makes a lot of dough. He sits and does the thinking while his wife pumps at the hoe! Lola Whitaker, Lyle's loyal wife, works harder than most men. She keeps the fields all clear -of weeds and feeds their children ten. Bob Woods, the great outstanding brain, is now a noted flyer, For when he learned just all he could, he still wished to go higher. Tom Bair has always had a voice that makes excitement grand. This renowned sports announcer is now tops in all the land! Do you recall Elaine Lehman with her red locks so rare? VVell, she is now a ravishing blond, thanks to new Tintair! Pat Steingrabe's Pet Shop in this town has increased in the past. Her hubby George is dog catcher and profits roll in fast. All said, the years keep rolling by, and each day dawns anew, Leaving still the lingering memories of a grand year, '52. Now you have read the Prophecy, and also, you, our friend, In just another second flat, shall, too, have read the end. THE END I cam flfbtff of 7Qj2 by Madeleine Fordney We, the 1952 Senior Class of New Wilmington High School, being of unsound minds and questionable intelligence, do vow and proclaim this last will and testament to go into effect immediately following pub- lication. Vv'e, who for twelve long years, explored the mysteries of education, return all stolen books and lab equipment, erase all personal autographs, and in general clean up the less reputable traces of our glorious careers. To all teachers, who patiently put up with our by-gone adolescence, we extend our appreciation and deepest sympathy due to the fact that though we leave, you have many more to rehabilitate. To Mr. Whitman, our beloved principal, a special thanks for the many questionable excused ab- sences, senior priveleges, and boosted grades which aided greatly in making school days a memorable phase of the past. To future classes, we the gals and guys of 52. With years behind, and years ahead, must bid a fond adieu. Memories here have paved the way, for you who will rise in another day. Worn seats and tattered books, foolish pranks and teacher's looks. VVe depart and march with pride, in answer to life's great call. But lest you forget, we leave behind, our picture in the hall. To dear Miss Dunn, our guiding light, from every lad and lass, We leave with joy, yet much regret, a new and hopeful class. Major Woods, our classis genius, man of knowledge great, Bob leaves his brain to Charley King, his junior chemistry mate. Joan McConnell's neat appearance wins her a silver dollar, She leaves her charming personality to be used by Sandra Sholler. Johnnie Muth, 'The Perk Prep Kid, can really sling the mush, He leaves his way with all the girls to Hbashfuli' Bobby Brush. Betty Maughan, that gay young girl, an ardent marriage fan, To Emma Jane Evans, she gives some hints, on how to get and keep a man. kk' Bob McFarland's quiet and conservative nature f deserves full recognition, if He leaves this trait to Tommy Jarag we think it's a Q worthy addition. Q Ruthie Cooper's magic talents fill a barrel of inspiration, X x To Sally Haymond, 4'Coop bestows her artistic inclination. X A level head and winning ways distinguish Robert X Creighton, Dave Howard receives this cloak of poise, to wear with no debatin'. f Lola Whitaker's genuine smile, affects many a gloomy soul, Y When she is gone she wants Bev Sloan, to take the Q., .1-'V leading role. TWENTY-ONE Bill Sholler's charm is undisputed, his ego needs no boostin', He leaves his looks to be upheld, in care of Sir James Houston. Doris Rey'nold's heart is not in books, to love they canit compare, To Margie Lesnett, that lucky girl, she leaves her curly hair. Walter McGinnis, 1952's man of distinction, has looks plus brains galore, Larry Tate receives Mose's secret way to win on the basketball floor. Jim Byers was always at assemblies, his voice could be heard in the bleachers, Before he goes, he gives Bob McClay, his way with all the teachers. A winning smile, and heart of gold belong to Gladys Barr, She loans this charm to Judy Cox, a little goes so far. Rich Scott's an awful friendly guy, he's never mean or snobby, He leaves his garden to Sonny Klumph, tomatoes are Rich's hobby. Mable Gilliland's a whiz on the keys, at typing she can't be beat, To Patty Hutchison, Mable leaves her tiny size 4V2 feet. Paul VVithrow would be quite an asset, if ever you're in a fight, To Rich Howard, The Mighty Midget, Dumbo leaves his height. Virginia Roman's lots of fun, and how she loves to dance! Jean Titus is a TV fan, she loves to read the papers, To Denny Shaffer, Jeanie leaves her Sunday driving capers. Janey Clark is always gay, her face holds such a glow, She leaves her mirth to Doris McFarland, in place of all that woe. Elaine Lehman's head holds a wealth of ideas, plus a crown of bright red hair, Her knowledge of music and fashion good taste, Elaine Springer gets to share. Robalee Burns has a knack for fun, but at stencils and themes she rebels, Those French verbs are left for Jane Mansell, a chore at which Roby excels. Carol Galbreath is successful, in anything she wants to achieve, Her outstanding grades and dependable ways, Fay Huff is in line to receive. As for myself, I leave my love for basketball, dancing and men to Molly Corey. Also I hare written a pamphlet entitled, Helpful Hints On How to Outfox Mr. Whitman, which can be purchased for a mall fee by anyone who feels in need of it. Although our number has greatly decreased this year, the rest of us are still plodding ever onward. Those who left us are: Carol Forbes, Regina Leonard, Burdette Castor, and Richard Howard. We were well represented this year in the school activities. Two of our fellows, Tom Hartwell and Richard Howard were on the Varsity first string and several others were subs. Seven of our boys were on the Junior Varsity team. We also had three varsity cheerleaders, Molly Corey, Sally Gilliland, Beverly McGinnis and two Junior Varsity cheerleaders, Janet and Barbara Atkinson. The class of 53 sponsored the annual Sweater Hop with Marty Vance chosen Sweater Queen and Molly Corey and Beverly McGinnis in the court. An enjoyable square dance, although not a very profitable one, was held later during the year. At the present time We are planning the Junior-Senior Prom which will be held in May. 4'You Can't Take It With You, a three act comedy, will be pre- sented by the class sometime in the future. Mrs. Helmick and Mr, Tobin have been kind enough to give up some of their time tc direct our play. Our class fund was greatly increased by the sale of pop and candy at the basketball games, and we are proud to say that our magazine sale topped every class preceed- ing us. For reaching the goal of 31,000 we will receive a plaque from the Curtis Company. At this time the Junior Class would like to bid a sad farewell to Burdette Castor and Richard Howard who will be serving their time in the United States Navy. Another live wire, Sonny Klumph, has been absent from our class for quite some time due to illness, but we're expecting him back next year. Re- porting for duty were fifty eager mates. New recruits were David Kaufman and Marilyn and Marlene Lee. Our captain, Miss McCalmont, spent several busy weeks mak- ing sure everyone reached the right classes at the ap- pointed hours, but when the confusion of the new sched- ules cleared away, we started to work in earnest. In search of leadership, we held an 'election result- ing in the choice of the following officers: Robert E. Clark ,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,, , ,. President Elaine Wilken . . Vice President Mary Lou Mansell ..... Secretary Laura Jane Fowble ,.,,.,,.,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,, T reasurer Our first social engagement was the t'Who's Whou in which we were none other than the honored guests. Then in October we sponsored a square dance with Garrett's Orchestra furnishing the music. In February, we held a party for just the mates and invited guests. Our class was also prominent in many other ship- board activities: musical, athletic and social. Four mem- bers were in the band, twenty-one were members of the Girls' Chorus, and ten of our class comprised the Boys' Chorus. In addition, four were members of the basket- ball team, and two, Eleu and Elaine Wilken, were Junior Varsity cheerleaders. Thelma Barr was honored by being chosen as .in attendant to the Sweater Queen. In order to pad our treasury for coming events, we assessed ourselves dues CS2.00 a yearj and sold candy every Thursday noon. In March, we were sorry to see Carl Detwiler leave, but he was granted his discharge in order that he might move to Indiana. VVe arcn't always angels, as we for knowledge seek, But supposing Mr. Whitman had assemblies once a week. Or when we're late and try to dash so quietly past McCall-- We'd find he wasn't stationed, as usual, in the hall. Or can you just imagine how nice that it would seem If King would treat all students like the fellows on the team? Or wouldn't it be helpful, and add a little fun To keep time by chewing, while typing for Miss Dunn? And wouldn't Miss McCalmont heave sighs of great relief If seniors got their English done and weren't just quite so brief? Or wouldn't all the sewing and dishes be a wreck? If Mr. Jacob Bumgardner would try to teach Home Ee? THIRTY-SIX Or 'wouldn't students stutter and not know what to say lt Mrs, Helmick failed to make assignments every dayi Or wouldn't it seem strange if Miss Gilliland you woul meet, And find her looking towsilly instead of being neat? Or wouldn't it look silly if Fuzz would come some day Grooming a black mustache and a curly red toupee? Or just imagine who thereld be to razz us country hicks If ever Mr. Byler would decide to leave the sticks. Or wouldn't it seem senseless, for so the sophomores say, If Mr. Taylor wouldn't have a test for every day? Or wouldn't it surprise you if some day you should see Mrs. Reaney swiftly gliding down the banister in glee? Or wouldn't music students say, t'Hey, Edwin, what's tha score? If Mr. Tobin taught a class with both feet on the floor? 'Tis hoped there're no offenses, for this is all in fun, And if it sounds ironic, just remember, it's a pun.'7 -Ruthie Cooper - A ,,,6?,,. .. , ,ww ,I f ,A f H 7 , W , 1 o ' ' . , X A V W YP nm ds . Al-- though he had a small team, Coach K'Fuzz,' Eagleson pulled some tricks out of the bag, and the boys played wonderfully well together. Using 'tOld 77 aided considerably our little, but fast team. Compiling a 14-7 record, we were the only team to defeat Stoneboro High School in regular season play, turning the trick by a 47-38 score. In one game, we held WVampum to 42 points, which was the Indians' lowest score in the last three years. Further-- more, we were the only team to beat Bessemer in the last half of league play. The scoring punch of Mose McGinnis, who was voted the most valuable player in Section 20, and the great rebounding of both Ooge Ringer and Mose gave us many a victory. The team is going to miss the support of these Co- Captains next season. The shooting accuracy and playmaking of Tom Hart- well and the tricky passing of Rich Howard helped the Greyhounds con- siderably. Our other starting position was shared among Chuck King, Bill Sholler, and Larry Tate. The speed of Chuck, the scrap of Bill, and the height of Larry and sub Tom Sarver also proved quite valuable. Bob Vander Lugt, Dale Wilson, Rich Scott, Sonny Klumph, and Tom McKee gave us bench strength and were useful in a number of games. The boys' ability to play together and their determination and will to win were big factors in having a successful season. Varsity R.
