The Publications Staff has worked many long hard hours to prepare for you a key that will unlock all of the many memories from the 1963-64 school year. We feel that we have accomplished this in the pages of the 1964 EAGLE. This book brings back to life the numerous activi- ties of the past year. We have strived to record vividly each phase of our school life, We worked, we played, we laughed, we cried, We shared headaches and heart- aches, joys and achievements. We shared hundreds of unforgettable experiences. The 1964 EAGLE is YOU--and your friends, and classmates, and teachers, We have tried to record your life at W-H as you lived it, day by day, for the last nine months. Without 21, this annual would not have been possible. In the distant future, your diploma will yellow with age, your classmates will slowly drift apart, your memories will gradually fade. When this occurs, it is our sincere hope that you will be able to thumb through the pages of the 1964 EAGLE, which we have so carefully prepared, and smilingly remember the wonderful year we have just completed as students at Wilmer-Hutchins High School. School is people: students, teachers, janitors, lunchroom ladies, and, indi- rectly, parents. School is new buildings, open doors, crowded hallways messy lockers, worn books, and freshly painted classrooms. There are more than these - there are parties and foot- ball games, bonfires and concerts, plays and basketball games, field trips and graduation. I I ...And Things School is the sadness of losing a football game, the joy received from a project well carried out, the pride felt when pre- sented with the Sports- manship trophy for basket- ball. Mr. Hitt started his educational career at W-H in 1947. He previously attended East Texas State College and received both a B,S. and a Master's degree in School Administration. His membership to Phi Delta Kappa, which basically concerns high scholastic records, proves him to be a most beneficial and capable leader, ,4-X YW Prinezpal W. T. Garner, who received a B,S, degree from Southwest Texas State and a Master's degree in Education from Texas Christian Uni- versity, has contributed in his 18 years at Wilmer-Hutchins more than his share of effort to better our school. And, does it say Pat or FAT ? The high school faculty for the '63-'64 school year consisted of twenty-two teachers. This is the largest number of full time teachers in the history of W-H. V Five of these teachers are new to Wilmer-Hutchins These are: Mrs. lsreal, Miss Shaw, Miss Dyer, Coach Phillips, and Mr. Greer. All five of these teachers were a welcome addition to the faculty. Their many, many hard hours of over-time mean a lot to their students. For without these ac- tivities that they sponsor for us, a lot of the fun would be taken out of high school. t Who says that teaching is all work and no play?'7'P What Is a Teacher? Every student has probably asked that very question many times in his school career. Just What E a teacher? That question is best answered in an article found in the January issue of the Balance Sheet, a magazine for business and economic teachers. Between the innocence of infancy and the dignity of maturity, children fall under the in- fluence of a group of people called teachers. Teachers come in assorted sizes, weights, and colors. They have various interests, hob- bies, religions, and beliefsg but they share one creed: To help each student to reach the highest possible degree of personal development. The teacher is a composite. A teacher must have the energy of a harnessed volcano, the efficiency of an adding machine, the memory of an elephant, the understanding of a psychia- trist, the wisdom of Solomon, the tenacity of a spider, the patience of a turtle trying to cross the freeway in rush-hour traffic, the decisiveness of a general, the diplomacy of an ambassador, and the acumen of a Wall Street wizard. He must remember always that he teaches by word but mostly by precept and example. A teacher is Truth with chalk dust in his hair, Beauty with an aching back, Wisdom search- ing for bubblegum, the Hope of the future, with papers to grade. f BERNIE LEFTWICH Science, Coach B.S., East Texas State BRUCE MORELAND Vocational Agriculture M.S., Texas A8aM I MRS.
