The 'I944 football season was the most successful ever enioyed by the Blue and White eleven. In not a single game were the W. H. Eagles outgained or outplayed. Many reasons could be given for their success, but the two outstanding ones were harmony and determi- nation. A The Eagles scored 342 points to 20 for the opponents in eleven games which included a victory over Kerens, the 'I6B champions, in a game that was not an official bi-district clash. W. H. H. S. 32, FOREST B 0 Before ea large' crowd, the W. H. Eagles started the season off poorly, scoring seven points the first half. However, they found themselves able to score four touchdowns in the sec- - ond. It was a good game so early in the season. Two touchdowns were scored on passes, Davis engineering the pass play to left end Billy Patterson, and LeRoy Gooch a wing back for touchdowns. . Bruce Pat Beard, running from the fullback posi- tion, ripped the Forest line to pieces. Charles Wade backed the line in a rugged manner. ' 'Y w. H. H. s. 26, PLEASANT G-Rove, o P The following week the W. H. Eagles met the . L . 'W Pleasant Grove Bobcats on the Pleasant Grove field. The Bobcats were a big, rugged and a well-coached rzfqkef J team. The Eagles earned every inch of the ground to -M ' score 26 points. , 'f l .X A 6 -2 5 On offense, the line opened holes for Bruce Beard to plunge through. Charles Wade at center and Billy Rawlins at guard sparked the line play. Four touch-. downs were scored, three were made on running plays and one on a pass play. Bruce Beard scored two, Bobby Davis and LeRoy Goochone each. LeRoy Gooch made a circus catch on a pass thrown by Bobby Davis at the goal line for the last touchdown. W. H. H. S. 20, VICKERY-HILLCREST 6 ' The Eagles traveled to Vickery-Hillcrest, playing the only afternoon game .of the season. Every year a team has to play a game where any- thing they do is opposite of what they would like to do. The reason is. simple, An overdose of over-confidence. The Eagles were caught by surprise as they did not expect as much from their opponents as they had offered, consequently the knocks re- ceived in this game seemed much harder and the tackles more vicious from their opponents than in any other game. The only thing the Eagles could do right was to come out on top with the score. Touchdowns were made by Bobby Davis, Bruce Beard, and Paul Jones. 1 W. H. H..S. 34, MIDLOTHIAN 7 Midlothian came to W. H. H. S. to seek revenge for the loss they re- ceived from the Eagls the previous year. Midlothian had a big, rugged, and a fast team. Allen, in all probability, was the fastest man ever to step on the Eagle field. He was a constant threat. ' The ends, Billy Patterson, Tommy Tigrett, and J. D. Parsons had a very busy night turning Allen in with his end sweeps. All three men carried out their assign- ments well. Johnnie Carr and Charles Wade played a fine game on defense. - -- Bobby Davis showed the Bobcats howto carry the WN il pigskin, for on three occasions he crossed their goal line. The three runs were beautifully executed and once past the line of scrimmage, Bobby side-stepped the secondary for long runs. LeRoy Gooch made a beau- tiful catch of a flat zone pass and then ran twenty- four yards to cross the goal line. Bruce Beard hit the center of the line for six yards to score six points. 4 1 W. H. H. S. 31, LANCASTER 7 5 . . A real rival, the Lancaster Tigers, came to our grid- iron on October 20th. This is always a grudge game. Playing before the largest crowd of the season, the Eagles ran roughshod over the Tigers to a tune of 31 to 7. A In the line Tommy Tigertt at left end, Bobby Talk- ington and Fred Mussina at tackles crashed through to rush the Tiger backs before they could get started . on a run or a pass. Bruce Beard scored the five touch- downs made by the Eagles. Three of these he made on running plays and two on flat zone passes thrown by Bobby Davis. Billy Patterson at right end helped set up one of the touchdowns by leaping high into the air to catch a pass from two opponents who were ready to intercept. Lancaster's lone touchdown was scored in the last quarter on two suc- cessive hide-out plays. s y u ' W. H. H. S. 19, FORNEY O On to Forney! With six games played and being undefeated, the Eagles took on their toughest rival of the season in conference play. This was the game of the season for both elevens. Both teams were determined to win, alprfect set-up. The blocking and tackling for both teams was very hard and rugged. ' A scoreless quarter was played with each team feeling the other out. ln the second quarter, the Eagles worked their running 'plays within the shadow of the Jackrabbits' goal line. Bruce Beard went off his own right tackle for the two yards to score. The score remained this way as the first half ended. ' On the first play from scrimmage of the second half, Bruce Beard squeezed through a hole opened by Fred Mussina, Tommy Tigertt, and Ez- dell Cain 'off of left tackle, crashed through, -reversing his field to run 71 yards for a touchdown. The .lackrabbits could not get started, and the 'best they could do was to make two first downs through- out the night. Fredd Mussina and Bobby Talkington, stopped everything coming their way. Ezdell Cain, the Eagle quarterback, found a weak spot in the Jackrab- bit line and took it upon himself to romp through. The ' last touchdown was scored by Bobby Davis going around his own right end after receiving a lateral pass from Bruce Beard. 1 The Eagles left the field a very happy squad. A hard-earned victory. q f u 4 W. H. H. s. 54, RICHARDSON' o ggiiwmmq. The steam roller, the W. H. Eagles, kept rolling as f ig Q--gi ....,x. they rolled over the Richardson Eagles by a top heavy score. The W. H. Eagles unleashed their power on the T Richardson Eagles and scored almost at will. The W. H. -4.- . N Eagles seemed as though they gained momentum, for ,U their tackling and blocking was harder as the season rolled along. - T rtv.2 1 ..5 J This marked the first time that the W. H. H. S. de- feated Richardson on their home field. Bruce Beard, with good blocking, scored the first touchdown. LeRoy Gooch made three of the touchdowns. His pass receiving was spectacular and his running of the reverse plays, with the ball being hidden on his his hip. Bobby Davis made two touch- downs, one after receiving a lateral to the weak side'from Bruce Beard. Charles Wade intercepted a Richardson pass and ran 34 yards for another SCOFS. W. H. H. S. 19, JESUIT O In a non-conference encounter, the Eagles defeated the Jesuit High Rangers of Dallas, 19 to O, on a mudddy field. As any other opponent would do, the Rangers knew that they were playing an undefeated eleven, and thereby came prepared to de-feather the rampaging Eagles. All of the touchdowns were scored on running plays. Ezdell Cain scored the first touchdown off of the famous T formation on a quick opening play. Bobby Davis scored two, the second being on a lateral from Bruce Beard, who raced sixty-eight yards on a beautiful run. W, H. H. S. 34, FERRIS 0 ' The Eagles, a team physically fit and mentally right, met the Ferris Yellowiackets who were pointing the entire season towards this game. The Yellowiackets won this game, a three-way tie would have resulted within the conference. A perfect setting for a cham- pionship game. The Yellowiackets, coached by Sher- man Fletcher, received the opening kick-off and went right to work, working the ball up to the W. H. 15- yard line, before losing the ball on downs. The game was about nine minutes old, when a surprise play, a single reverse with LeRoy Gooch hid- ing the ball on his hip and running fifty-two yards to -'li the Ferris own two-yard line. On the next play Bobby Davis went over for the first touchdown. This reverse play was the turning point of the game. Bobby Davis calling plays on the offense built this reverse play strategically. Ferris was caught flat footed. Bl-DISTRICT CHAMPS With the kick-off play beginning the second half, Bruce Beard-returned the ball 'ninety-two yards for a touchdown, only to have the play called back because of an off-side pen- alty'on the kick-off formation. This was the outstanding play of the season, not only because of the run, but the manner in which the Eagles blocked for Beard. Other touchdowns were made by Bobby Davis, who scored twice, Bruce Beard and Ezdell'Cain. In the line Fred Mussina and Bobby Talkington at tackles, Tommy Tigertt at end and Charles Wade at center were outstanding. W. H. H. S. CChamps Dist. TZBJ 34, KERENS CChamps Dist. l6BJ O Both teams having an off week before meeting their re- spective Bi1District opponent, and each playing only nine games up to date, played a matched game in Kerens on Thursday, November 30th, before a huge crowd. Paced by Bobby Davis, the Eagles wallopqd the Bobcats 34 to O. Davis made three touchdowns, sidestepping and weav- 'ing his way for seventy-three yards on one run, and passed for another. Davis, one of the best backs to ever represent tlfile Blue and White, exhibited the qualities that make a back great. Ezdell Cain and Bruce Beard made the other tallies. The score at the end of the first half was 7 to 0. The Eagles could not get started, but found themselves in the second half to score 27 points. . Charles Wade and Fred Mussina starred defensively for the Eagles, while Henderson Carroll, big left end for Kerens, was a constant worry to the Eagles attack. . w. H. H. s. CDist. IQBJ 39, STRAWN quasi. 7BJ o The Eagles staged a touchdown parade to trounce a game Strawn Greyhound eleven in their bi-district encounter on a neutral field in Ferris. Bobby Davis, in the first play frorri scrim- mage for the Eagles, packed the ball on his hip in a very de- ceptive bootleg play and scampered sixty-two yards for a touchdown. So precise was the blocking that not a single hand was laid on him. From there, the championship march was on. V 77177, v W ,,,, 7 YY - - W V,--7----ww,-V-vmw Bl-DlsTRlcT CHAMPS G Davis slashed through the 'line for twenty-seven yards and another score midway in the first quarter. He passed to Beard, in the left flat zone, for six more points after the second stanza began. LeRoy Gooch, Eagle half, scored on a delayed reverse buck after a Davis to Gooch pass had put the ball on the two- yard line. A In the final quarter with the tiring Greyhounds unable to gain, the 12B champions sped through the line for two final touchdowns 'as Beard went off tackle to score and Charles Wade, a center, intercepted a sfruwh pass to cross pay dirt. A- pass, Davis to Tigertt, scored the last point of the season. , The seniors playing their last game for the Blue and White were: . Co-Capt. Bruce Beard, Co-Capt. Charles Wade, Bobby Davis, LeRoy Gooch, Tommy Tigertt, Billy Patterson and Roy Ward. A fine season has come to an end. It ended as it began in our first huddle before each game.
