Ira ww: 4' iw-an Sie- M ,Aw is N e S' N ' gi x ,Ng i ln the year of 1941, forty-three scared little angels en- tered the first grade at Willshire School. lt wasn't long be- fore our wings became a little shorter, but Miss Christy kept us well in hand. We then became second graders with Miss Burkhart as our teacher for the first half of the year and Mrs. Eichar for the last half. Our third year was spent with Miss Weinman learning our multiplication tables. 2.xZ - 4 With graciousness Mrs. Bain welcomed us to the fourth grade. We were very progressive that year. Remember the Ivory Soap on the map rack and playing Post Office in the coatroom? For the fifth grade we had Mrs. Bowen as our teacher, where we learned enough to pass on to the sixth grade and Mrs. Fisher tutored us. Then came the seventh grade and Mr. Sipe. After a few trips to the office and a few more April-Pooling tricks, we were passed on for Mr. Lucas to handle. We felt pretty bright after we mastered the eighth grade test and went through our graduation exercises. Ah! high school, but we weren't nearly as bright as we thought we were especially when the seniors dobbed us up with green cold cream and fed us onions and garlic. With the help of Mr. Griffith we found out high school wasn't so bad after all. During our sophomore year with Mr. Mankin as our spon- sor, we provided some different entertainment by having a Fish Fry and a Talent Show. Our junior year was a busy one. We had selling cam- paigns, a play, and planned for the prom. We also got our class rings. But with the help of Mr. Lucas we pulled through and began our senior year which was an even busier one making plans for our trip, putting out the school paper, selling annuals and many other activities. For our sponsor we were glad to have Mr. Compton and also Mrs. Byers as our co-sponsor. Now the time has come for us to part with dear old Will- shire, our teachers and school mates. Here we have spent many days and incidents which we will never forget. So we say good-bye to all our friends and hope to see you soon again. 12 KAY CLOUSE SHIRLEY BUCHANAN Y-Teens 1,2,3,45 Glee Club l,2, 3,45 Band 1,2,3,45 Choir 3,45 Class Play 3g Willscribe Staff 45 Willow Staff 4. Compton 79 Just the other day Robert Merkle insisted that I come to the lab to see his latest invention, timovision. Robert explained that the machine was like a tele- vision set, except for the fact that you can tune in happenings from any period-- past, present, or future. He turned it on and after a few blurred pictures, the dial showed 1974, Robert stoppedthe machine there and we saw several familiar faces on the screen. Marilyn Monroe? No, she's retired and it's Shirley Buch- anan, the new blonde bombshell, starring in the latest musical by Tom Marbaugh, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Redheads, and Brunettes, But Girls With Brown Hair Will Do. Meanwhile, we were interrupted by a singing commercial, the vocalist was Rose Ross singing the praises of a new beverage, Choke. It was invented by Carolyn Dull when she mixed two parts of hydrogen and one part of oxygen together. Hillbilly music floats out of the machine and we see Ruth Huston and her Cannon Balls from Wabash. The next act is a courtroom scene and--oh,no! a woman lawyer,Elodee Nye,no less. She is defending Dale Lautzenheiser in a suit being brought against him by the U.S. government. He was formerly an internal revenue department employee. His hobby was juggling, fbooks of coursel. The voice of a sports reporter, Eugene Merkle, interrupts the scene and we discover that Shirley Deitsch has won the title of most valu- able player of the National Women's Basketball Congress for her outstanding record on a girls' basketball team the All-American Redheads, Fredda Mae Marsee's horse, Itch, has won the annual Sheridan Downs race. George Schaf- fner has broken an all time speed record by completing the 125,000 mile rocket race in 3 hours, 47 seconds. This brings us to another commercial this time from Lacy's department store. Colleen Weinman, aPowers model is parading a custom-made white mink coat. Miss Weinman also runs her ownfashion salon in Paris. Her private designer is Jacques De Carot, the husband of Wilma Schumm. Next, a blond cornetist appears on the screen, naturally, it's Susie Caffee. She is a member of Ruby Merkle's all girl orchestra. Our talking is interrupted by the commentator, Kay Clouse. She is revealing the latest ro- mance, Byers versus Hunter. Mary is a platinum blonde cigarette girl at the Stork Club while John has earned his second million with his chain of sewage disposal companies throughout the U.S. The latest news from our crime report- er, Linda Herron, is the arrest of an elevator operator, Connie Marbaugh, she is accused of hanging her laundry on the flagpole at the top of the building. The president of the board of directors of the Bell Telephone Co., Mary Huffman, said that underwater phones are now available for swimmers and people that like to phone from their shower. Our scoop for the evening is the death of the boss of the underworld, Vernon Kuhn. Mr. Kuhn was the head of the Subway Association for the last three years. A contract for the funeral arrangements was given to the Stetler Morticians Inc. The only flowers to be allowed will be a. certain variety of black roses grown solely by the florist, Duane Krall. In closing, I wish to report the setting of a new world's typing speed record by Mr. Dale Compton. The new record is 305 words per minute. He said he would have been able to go faster, but the typewriter ribbon went so fast that it smoked, partially blocking his vision. I was jarred back to reality when the door flew open and in walked Larry Samples. Larry it seems is a rich banker from Jim Town a suburb of that great industrial city, Willshire, Ohio. Bob is trying to get Larry to be a financier of his new invention, so when they began to talk business I quietly slipped out the door. As Ileft the building Ithought to myself, the class of 54 sure did make something of themselves but then they always were some class. 19 1- --W - - ,m--.-m:.Ef -...-......-.s...... .-.-,..1...-aiizgi - -l..-..-a.- .. :. ni- 4- A -5 We, the Senior Class of 1954, being of sound mind and body do will and be- queath the following possessions: I, Shirley Buchanan, will my ability to drive my father's car to Leon Jones, my old beat up clarinet case to Linda Hoblet my badly torn bookkeeping book to anyone crazy enough to take the course. A comprehensive music program is begun in the grades , and the high school interest is a natural outgrowth of such a program. The school band is perhaps the most popular of the musical organi- zations because it appears before the public so often, and band music seems to be universal in its appeal. Before a student is eligible to be- come a member, he must have had private lessons until he achieves a certain required amount of skill on the musical instrument of his choice. At the present time the band is a regularly scheduled class and each student receives one-half a credit per year of his membership. ln ad- dition to that,he earns a band letter for satisfactory work. This means that he must appear with the band for all public appearances and attend classes regularly. At the present time, the band boasts of thirty-five instrumentalists, five twirlers, one drum major, two majorettes, and two flag carriers. Activities include band shows at basketball games, participation in county and state fairs, and local parades. The band also joins in with other bands of the county to present an annual All- County Band Festival. Membership in the glee clubs is required for freshmen and sopho- mores, and is elective for upper classmen. These groups perform for local school programs such as minstrel shows, operettas, cantatas, etc. The members for the high school chorus are selected according to vocal ability and skill in sight-singing. Each pupil must try out individ- ually for membership in this organization. This group represents the school in competitive festivals with other schools both in the county and district events. At the present time, the chorus is composed of forty- five members, and each high school grade is represented. This or- ganization sings the more serious songs and usually provides the music for the baccalaureate services. The students feel it is a privilege to be a member of the high school chorus. 33 Wee FIRST ROW: Jeanette Alspaugh, Sandra Marbaugh, Rosie Charleston, Emma Marsee, Darlene Gibbons, Nada Bayles, Clara Garver, Phyllis Goodwin, Sondra Schlickman, Dana Hoblet, Sharon Hoverman, SECOND ROW: Louise Merkle, Beverly Norton, Charmaine Wilson, Janet Koch, Mary Jane Witters, Anita Hughes, Anne Byer, Norma James, Vernie Frank, Judy Byer, THIRD ROW: Shirley Buchanan, Susie Caffee, Kay Clouse, Bonnie Stetler, Donna Mae Bienz, Linda Hoblet, Anna Kallenbarger, Barbara Kuhlberg, Mary Schumm, June Gallant, Barbara Dietrich, Linda Finch. The voters of the Willshire school districtvoted favorably dur- ing the May 1953 election to construct anew addition to our school. On June 15, 1953 the bonds to finance this program were sold to the James White Company of Cincinnati. Then after the necessary legal period for advertising the contracts were sold during the month of October. There were many bidders on each of the fol- lowing contracts. The successful bidders being as follows: Gen- eral, Green and Sawyer of Lima, Ohio, Plumbing and Heating, Kohli of Lima,Ohiog Electrical, Gorman Electric of Van Wert,Ohiog and Cafeteria Equipment, Hillman China Company of Fort Wayne. Construction started almost immediately after the awarding of the contracts and the work progressed rapidly during the ideal fall and early winter weather. At the time of this writing, January 2.6, 1954, the contractors report they are well ahead of schedule and hope to have their job done before the completion date which is November 1, 1954. 58 m-78 Students, Teachers, Parents and Friends: This yearbook was brought to you at a reason- able price , through the co-operation and financial support of the friendly merchants of ours and surrounding communities. They have shown their interest in our school and the Willow staff greatly appreciates their support. Let's extend our good will and patronage to them in the same manner in which they have given theirs to us. On the following pages you will find: de 14 . . .
