THE CLASS HISTORY OF 1949 On the morning of September l3, 1937, 32 beaming little faces, whose coun- tenances showed both fright and eagerness, were seen standing on the doorstep of the Willshire Public School. Once inside, we soon learned the full meaning of school. Our first task was learning to spell and print our names, which to some of us proved quite troublesome. Through the patience and efforts of Miss Beatrice Neiferdg how- ever, we soon were able to graduate into the second grade, which indeed made us feel so-o-o important. On hand to greet us as second graders, was Miss Mildred Wolfe. We found our second year in school passing quickly and soon we were calling ourselves third graders Our teacher for this year was Miss Bernice Dudgeon, and she taught, or tried to teach us about geography, and Language. Confidentially, we were often seen racking our little brains trying to understand just why this was done, and how this could be? ? ? From the fourth through the eighth grade, Mr. Sipe and Mr. Edwards were our teachers, and helped us get the final knowledge needed in order to enter high school. The night of our graduation from the eighth grade, we were all feeling quite grown up, for we knew that high school days were not far off. Freshmen at lastf We found to our regret that the seniors had already picked our nicknames for us, greenies, we might add that this nickname didn't last all year, but just until we learned the ropes. Mr. Griffith was our class sponsor, and we discovered that not even he could save us from the auful fate the seniors had planned for us. Didn't the girls look a sight in those feed sacks and men's shirts? And the boys, they were really something to look at in their short dresses and high heelsf- Although, we must confess we would much rather see them in their everyday costumes At the opening of the next school term, we were ranked as Sophomores. Miss Leininger was our class sponsor, and we earned money to boost our treasury by sell- ing refreshments for the last half of the basketball games that were held at home. We found our Junior year to be quite eventful. We chose our class play, The Baby Sitter and presented it on November 23, to a good-sized audience. We received our class rings in March, and were quite pleased with them. Then came the plans for the Junior and Senior Reception. It was held at Hotel LaFontaine in Huntington, Indiana, on May 14. We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. Now we find ourselves on the last lap of our school days. Dignified Seniors, they call us! This year has proved to be the most exciting of any, with everyone looking forward to our senior trip to Washington D. C. Our class has an enrollrnent of 10 girls and 6 boys this year. Only 5 girls and 1 boy attended our Alrna Mater all twelve years. They are: Marjorie Agler, Ruth Davis, Phyllis Hamrick, Marjorie Stetler, Gloria Trisel, and Jim Koch. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Cowan, our class sponsor for the unfailing help he has given us all during our senior year. 14 SENIOR CLASS WILL The Senior Class of Willshire, Ohio, having been brought before the jury of teachers of Willshire High School, have been informed that on May Z5 they must die, due to a serious case of knowleclgitis. Listen now and you shall hear the reading of the last Will And Testament of the Class of 1949. Don Black Edgar Allmandinger Dixie Schlickrnan Ted Hakes Marjorie Stetler SENIOR C LASS PROPHEC Y On my third expedition to the Tibetian Plateau, my company and I got lost in a blinding snow storm. We finally stumbled into the doorway of an enormous building. We opend the creaking door and found ourselves to be in the temple of a strange re- ligious sect. The room was empty but there on a small table was a strange looking lamp. I picked it up and started rubbing it, when all of a sudden, lightning struck, thunder rolled, and there before me stood a Genie. He said, What do you wish, Master? I was dumbfounded at first and didn't know what to say, butlfinally managed to stammer that I'd like to know what my old friends, the Seniors of '49 were doing in this year of 1979 A. D. And this is the story he told me. Marjorie Agler and Joyce Fetters are nurses and and are running a hospitable for broken-hearted old maids like themselves. Down a few blocks from the hospital, Edgar Allmandinger is working as a mechanic and blacksmith in a candy factory. You see, he tightens the nuts in the peanut brittle, and shoes the flies. Ruth Davis is teaching Home Economics and Music at Ohio State. In her spare time she gives piano lessons to the male students there. Don Black is also teaching at Ohio State. They tell me that his coaching is even better than Fitz Crizler. Bill Hey enlisted in the army, and the other day his sergeant told him to fire at will. Bill looked around and said, Where's Will? Phyllis Hamrick is now a famous milliner in China Town. On a sign outside her shop is written, Madame Hamrickee's Hoity Toity Hattee Shoppe. Just across the street inalittle white church, Reverend .Toe Thatcher can be seen giving his morning sermon. All the ladies in the congregation enjoy his singing so much that they can hardly be persuaded to go home when church is over. Speaking of singers, Jim Koch has now been given the name The Satin Voice by the bobby soxers, and is being rushed by dozens of beautiful girls in Hollywood. That reminds me, Ted Hakes is a test pilot for the new jet planes. He always was a speed demon and man of action back in the old days though. Do you remember hearing Gloria Trisel say that she would never marry? Well, she's married and a grandrnother already. Time sure does fly! Dixie Schlickman is in the watch repairing business with her husband, and l've heard tell that she's pretty good at making the old clocks tick. Betty Humerickhouse has taken up the art of wrestling and Ann Gibbons is her manager. The other night Betty got her nose broke, and they had to call on Dr. Ella Roehm, a famous woman surgeon, to set it. Unfortunately, Dr. Roeh.m's wave set evaporated on the way over, so poor Betty held her nose in her hands until more ca.-Ll-d be boughtlf Marjorie Stetler is still down on the farm, and be- sides taking care of 7 cows, 19 pigs, 1000 chickens, Z dogs, 5 cats, and a parrot, she now has 11 little Nettles in her hair. She sure is a busy woman. Realizing that l had now heard all about the Seniors of '49, I asked the Genie to shovel away the snow so we could be on our way. No sooner did I speak, than the snow had vanished, the sun was out, the Genie gone, and my company and I were in our rocket headed back for the good, old, U. S. Front Row: Eugene Bienz, Bill Marbaugh, William Baker, Ted Hakes, and Gene Koch Coach Games, standing in back row. VARSITY TEAM The school year of 1948-49 proved quite a successful one for our athletics. Coach Games again placed a team on the floor that showed competent coaching and skill. The team won 14 games and lost 3 for their season's record, excluding the county tournament, which hadn't been played at this writing. Left to Right: Ted Hakes, .Tim Koch, Bill Marbaugh, Gerald Hoblet, Gene Painter, Vic Strickler, Phil Hileman, Vernie Luginbill, Don Caffee, and Keith Ross. RESERVE TEAM When the reserves wound up their schedule this year, they had a record of 12 wins and 5 losses. This record may not seem too impresive, but it provided the underclassmen with the much needed experience that it takes to make good teams in the future. From these boys, Coach Games will be able to draw the material that will build some fine teams in the next few years. Back Row: Gene Koch, Jim Miller, Gene Baker, Bob Hey, Gene Bienz, Coach Games. C. 45 THISIS WHY - - - We, the seniors of 1949 have endeavored to show you life in our school as it actually exists. The teachers at work, the activities we enjoy, the sports we play, and classes we attend are all pictured so that you may see Willshire High School in action. As students move through life, there will be many times that they will look longingly back to their school days. Pictures, snaps, comments, and explanations, all will help to recall the days gone by. After all, this annual is really your memory sketches you will never forget. Things really start with the teachers and faculty. As soon as we have settled to routine, the classes are organized. A little later the athletics take the center of the stage. Finally, the classes, about which the school revolves, begin to see the day of final report cards. Each pupil then feels he has climbed another rung on his way to the top, The seniors see their diplomas, caps and gown, and the life ahead of them. Just as you will find this book recalling happy memories from your school life, so shall we in the future years find this book a happy reminder of our yesterdays. 1 'WIA 55 ',.,E -1 Tl' L'-, . Everything had to be carefully planned, from the first word to the last picture. Pictures had to be taken and arranged. Accurate information had to be gathered and written up. Every page had to be completely accounted for. We admit that it has been hard work, but we enjoyed it. The year's annual staff has tried to give you an informal, realistic view of school life. Informality is an outstanding characteristic of young people. It is this characteristic which we have tried to show you. We hope you enjoy reading the Willow as much as we have enjoyed putting it out.
