National Manor Society G. Sprague, B. Pierce, R. VanKorb, P. Kelly, J. Clark, R. Garvey, J. Hams Vanguard Last year a local school program was started to encourage academic achievement. This program is independently conceived and administered and is not associated with the National Honor Society. The plan is called Vanguard. The plan is set up for students in grades seven through twelve. Students qualify each quarter on the basis of credit points earned. Credits are assigned to the average grade received in each subject for the quarter. The number of credits needed to qualify is determined by the number of subjects carried. The plan places a premium on excellence in all subjects taken rather than on excellence in just one or two. A tentative system of awards is set up to promote public recognition of superior effort and to give academic excellence the recognition it de- serves.

Zke Senior Band The 1963 version of the Senior Band consists of approximately 60 members. The six graduating seniors have witnessed a complete transformation. Their early memories are of a 35 piece group without some of the more unusual instruments that have been added since that time. Russ VanKorb was the sole flutist in the 1959 Spring Concert; now he boasts of a harem of five girl flutists. Marcia Berman and Helen Sharrow were the third clarinet players in a five piece clarinet section; now they are the solo clarinets of an eighteen piece clarinet group with five of these playing the first part. Although Gretchen Sprague’s section has remained constant in number she has seen freshmen trombonists playing at a level previously attained by some upperclassmen. Dianne Doyle and Warren King were pioneers. Dianne saw her section switch from alto-horns to the much more intricate french horn. Warren became’the first timpani player here and gained a great deal of recognition. Variety and travel have been the bywords of this group. In 1959 the band appeared on WPTZ-TV in Plattsburg, N. Y. and during that same year gained much recognition by being chosen one of the five best bands at the Tir State Festival in Cambridge. N. Y. In 1960, exchange was the word. Home and away concerts were arranged with the Elizabethtown and Keeseville, N. Y. Central Schools and with the Adams, Massachusetts High School Band. The 1961 Band enjoyed two exchanges. The never to be forgotten concert at Beekmantown, N. Y. , where we gained much praise from the people of the Plattsburg area, was a booster, indeed. This feeling, however, was to be further capped by an exhilarating visit to Camden, Maine. We not only enjoyed their fine New England hospitality but we were greeted with a standing ovation at the conclusion of our individual performance on the concert stage. We could have stayed on there forever. In 1962 we experienced another standing ovation during a return visit to Adams, Massachusetts. Our reception there was stellar and many lasting friendships ensued. An outstanding event of that same year was the hosting of the famed M. A. I. Band in an exchange concert. We were proud to equal the performance of such a fine musical aggregation. Before the memories of 1962 disappear let us not forget the North American Festival at Lake Placid, N. Y. , where we played for the coronation ceremonies and a hockey game at the Olympic Arena. We must not forget our appearances at the 1961 and 1962 Essex County Fair, the wonderful show people that we met, and the thrilling experience of playing for stage shows. Nor can we help remembering our Christmas Eve Radio Broadcast over WEAV, with its musical trip to Santa's Toy Shop. Last but not least we'll remember our latest innovation - the Pop Concerts, with the Junior Band waitresses, punch and cookies, card tables, guest conductors and that cannon blast. A trip to North Kingston, Rhode Island and the cutting of our first record provide the topping for this year's events. These are unequalled experiences that have been truly educational and will provide us with a background that will better enable us to enjoy life in the future.
