Text from Pages 1 - 60 of the 1958 volume:

02( ttC4 o'i Sc toaC 'ZOMt via, 'Jfecu To The Class of 1958 You are very important people. Upon you, and thousands like you, who are completing their high school course, rests a tremendous responsibility. I wonder if you have played chess. If you haven't, you should learn. The world you are about to enter resembles a great chess game. The stakes are peace and survival. The players are two powerful and determined nations. The moves are thought out by the keenest and best trained minds of these nations. It seems probable that no shot will ever be fired, no bomb dropped, but the moves on the board will continue, each opponent jockeying for position, neither one really wanting to play, but afraid of the consequences of losing. It is a war of thought. The nation with the most capable thinkers will win. It's hard to predict what will happen to the loser. You are a participant in this game. Your mind is your survival. Nourish it, exercise it, and make it produce. This is your responsibility. MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1958 Today you face the stern responsibilities, and the weighty problems of the adult world. On the wisdom of your decisions concerning these factors depend the safety of America and the prospects of peace in a complex world. This fact alone must make you pause and think seriously. I would like you to remember that there is no accomplishment without effort, and effort means work. Moreover, work is the prerogative of intelligence, the measure of a man, and of all civilization. However, I sincerely hope that you will always be able to open your eyes to the morning sun, to meet the changes that may be necessary - to welcome new ideas. So catch a falling star as you go along life’s way, and put it in your pocket. Save it for a rainy day! Allots- Supervising Principal - FRANCIS B. Therefore, it is not so hard as many people suppose for one who takes the trouble to observe the comings and goings of his fellow creatures, to be something of a prophet, and form some idea of what their future course of action will be.
