■ The Gilliland 1957 WILLSBORO HIGH SCHOOL Willsboro, New York MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR The writing of this message is one of my final acts in the preparation of this, the 1957 Gilliland. As I do so, I look back through our high school years and recall some of the incidents which helped make these days memorable to us all. The thrill of our first dance (we were but Freshman then); the miles we trudged selling magazines and stationery; the anticipation which we all shared during the planning and creation of An Evening in Paris, our Junior Prom; the excitement which each of us felt as we unpacked our class rings; the sweat and toil endured throughout our Senior year! These are but a few of the many. We have attempted in compiling this book, to create something that will not only be treasured through the yean to come, but will also be taken out occasionally, dusted off, and reread. Your high school years have been a preparation for your life to come. Make good use of the knowledge and experience you have acquired thus far, add to It, and success will find you. Sincerely yours, Robert Kneeland Editor-in-Chief Dedication We, the Class of '57, dedicate our yearbook, the 1957 Gilliland, to Miss Marian Billings, who provided the inspiration needed to make our Senior year a successful one. As our advisor and friend, she has certainly contributed to the memories of our final year at Willsboro High. To you, Miss Billings, we say, May God bless you and be with you in the future. Advisor's Message Dear Seniors, The time that you have worked so hard for and looked forward so long to has come at last. You are about to become a part of your school's past. Your Senior year has been a good one in many ways. I have enjoyed working with you. Oh, we have had our ups and downs, our disappointments, and our disagreements, but you have given in to me or I to you (can you imagine such a thing) and together we have weathered the storms. adult world, many little things you will remember with joy -- Joyce and Joe, Barbara's tears (that was truly Leamon's fault) Beverly's chatter, the sweat and tears of the Senior Suppers, the cookies that mysteriously disappeared, (Poor Mr. Allison) the coke that Emerson consumed -- the vice principal, Love is Too Much Trouble, Morris as Estelle -- Florida -- all these things and more will be talked about and laughed over, whenever two or three of you gather together. Yes, your school days have been happy ones! Guard well those memories -- and may all your dreams come true!! When you lay aside your cap and gown and become a part of the Principal’s Message To the Class of '57 My wish for you is this: That you will always want to know more about the world in which you live, and about the people in it. If you do this, you will never be bored. That you put the job before the pay, and the sense of accomplishment ahead of incidental pleasures. If you do this, your life will take on meaning and purpose. That you remember that you do not live to yourself alone, and that your own life may well be judged in terms of what it has meant to other people. To do this is to glimpse eternity. The Latin II members became the Senatorial Party or the Optimates who initiated the Latin I group into the Club as the Popular Party or the Plebes. The Club membership numbers twenty-four. Club officers were elected as follows: Counsuls, Micky Moran, Gael Maclnnes; Quaestor, Bill Albee; Scriba, Darlene Davis; Lictor, Ronnie Bruno and Ann Nichols. Ronnie Bruno and Gary Murphy did the art work for a membership scroll, decorated with Roman symbols. Pins were ordered for each member. Hell Week, a P-Rade, Stunt Night, and an impressive Initiation Ceremony ushered in the Plebes. Members, clad in togas, attend meetings every two weeks. Latin charades, skits and games from the entertainment for these meetings. The object of the Club is to re-live the life of the Romans insofar as it is possible. The year's activities end with a Roman banquet in early June, at which time all will recline and partake of food and amusement, quite as the Romans did. Latin may be a dead language, but Latin Club is certainly learning how to live it up.
