HFASCINATING RHYTHM The TrumpeTs call and The brass horns roar, The clarineTs play and The TluTes Ier ouT Their Treble Trill! Yes, This is The Willows band warming up. Our band is widely known as an ouTsTanding one in The Valley. Many people sTand on sTreeT corners during parades sTraining To see The Tlashy purple and gold uniTorms ThaT adorn The players. who march wiTh precision and co-operaTe perTecTly. Unlike many oTher bands, They pay sTricT aTTenTion To Their conducTor during rehearsals and never behave in a disorderly manner. No doubT This build-up has seemed raTher exaggeraTed To you. Well, iT really isn'T all True, as you know, buT The kids are really a swell bunch, who love and admire Their leader. They have played aT every TooTball game during The halT-Time and Time-ouT, and proved wonderTul enTerTainmenT Tor The specTaTors. During baskeTball season They ac- companied The Team and rooTers To The games. AT The Willows-Anderson game here The pep band, wiTh Iigh+s on Their TeeT and lighTed haTs, played and drilled in a dark- ened gymnasium. The perTormance was specTacular and The crowd showed Their ap- proval by Tremendous applause. On March I and 2 some oT The members aTTended The band clinic aT Redding, where They did sighT reading and played in a massed band. Those Taking parT said iT was very inTeresTing. Also during March The band gave iTs annual spring concerT. This gave Them pracTice Tor The TesTival They were To aTTend laTer. So one morning in May The band meT aT a very unreasonable hour aT The band room To go To Berkeley To The annual Band FesTival, where They played chosen pieces in compeTiTion wiTh many oTher bands and where They received a high raTing on Their perTormance. Through fhe years our efforfs have been concenfrafed mainly in insfrumenfal work, direcfed by Mr. L. A. McArfhur. who has made an envious and ar reaching repufafion as a band direcfor. Since I926, when Mac fook over The direcfion of fhe G.C.H.S. band. fhe organiza- fion has grown sfeadily and has become an accomplished and finished producf. known far and wide. Abou? one-fhird of fhe sfudenf body has consfanfly parficipafed in insfrumenfal mu- sic. For each sfudenf whoihas faken advanfage of fhe educafional fraining. if has been a wonderful ouflef for recreafion and musical developmenf. There has also been vocafional value in fhis deparfmenf, as a number of sfudenfs have been so inspired and frained by Mac fhaf fhey have chosen music as avocafion. Several of fhem have become widely known as band direcfors. We have had some vocal music fhrough fhe years. buf since I947 vocal music has faken an imporfanf place in fhe high school curriculum. The enfire school and commu- nify are iusfly proud of fhe organizafion and accomplishmenfs of Mrs. Genevieve Borene's deparfmenf. . We have also added fo fhe deparfmenf a unique division in fhaf we have esfablished a dancing class under fhe insfrucfion of Mrs. Zoe Dell Wesf. This group has been fhe envy of ofher high schools and insfifufions who have had 'rhe opporfunify of enioying 'rhe musical shows fhaf fhis class has been able fo produce. To each and every one of you who are parficipafing in fhe music deparfmenf, I con- grafulafe you on your fine work and performance in fhe pasf.
