VARSITY BASKETBALL: LEFT T0 RIGHT: Manager Joe Tomanek, George Thoreson, Bob Cortesi, Wally Streid, Gary Flaudabaugh, Bill Fry, Dave Rushton, Coach Stoner, Jim Mahr, Flon Murphy, Mark Skipworth, Jeff Conner, Flon Dowariz, Tom Hicks, and Manager Bill Sokup. Cagers' Youth ls No Factor The Willowbrook varsity basketball team is one of the youngest in the area. With four starters returning next year, Willowbrook should be one of the top teams around. Despite the team's youth, the boys improved steadily as the season progressed, achieving a 14-10 record. The Warriors received some bad breaks with the forfeit of three games and injury to Jim Mahr, who was out most of the season, but they had some highlights as well with the winning of the Consolation Championship in the Proviso West Christmas Tournament. Bob Cortesi set a school record by scoring 471 points in one season and averaged 19.6 points per game. George Thoreson was the leading rebounder getting 210 rebounds, while Tom Hicks, sophomore, got 201 rebounds. Thoreson also led in percentage of baskets made by getting 55 per cent, which is also a school record. Sophomore Ron Dowiarz also greatly contributed to the team's success. Back-up men such as Wally Streid, Jeff Conner, and Bill Fry helped the team's strong attach. Captains for the 1968-69 season were Bob Cortesi and George Thoreson. All-Conference honors went to Bob Cortesi, while George Thoreson received All-Conference Honroable Mention. The junior varsity team was also a group of inexperienced players at the beginning of the season, but they improved tremendously as the season went on, winding up with a 10-9 record and fourth place in the Conference. NOTPICTURED: Rick Siegfried and Jim Prusa. Grapplers Take Third in Districts This season was the best in Willowbrook history fortheWrestlingWarriors. They achieved a record of 8 wins and 3 losses. Willowbrook also placed second in the St. Francis Holiday Tournament, with Bob Stewarts and Rich Siegfried going undefeated. The team placed third in Districts, another first in Willowbrook history. District champs were Gary Cottone and Tim McDermott. Five wrestlers advanced to Sectionals.Here Jim Prusa placed third, while Rich Siegfried placed second and qualified to go downstate. Outstanding records by individuals were Gary Zizzo, 14-4, which is a school record for the most wins by a sophomore on varsity: Gary Cottone, 19-31 Bob Stewarts, 14-45 Tom Larsen, 11-3-33 Rich Siegfried, 13-3-15 and Jim Prusa, 'I1-5-1.
