On july 29, I received the notice that I would come to be an A.F.S. student. We had two rushed weeks to pre- pare everything for the trip. I took the airplane, and on August 15 I found myself in New York and four days after in Villa Park. The first days in my new city were full of new things that I discovered each day. My new family could not be better, and all the people I knew were so friendly that it did not take too long to feel at home. When school started, I was confused and many times lost in the halls. Willowbrook is such a big school, almost four times the size of my school in Brazil. There we do not have lockers, and I had a little trouble with mine in the first weeks. In the beginning I did not understand one word the teachers said in class. I had a hard time with Beowulf and Macbeth, but there is nothing better than time to help us to learn. Sao Paulo, the city where I came from, is a big indus- trial city with five million people, but there are many little things that are new for me, and I was surprised when I stopped in front of the door of the supermarket and it opened by itself. And when I asked for tennis shoes number thirty-seven, the mankwho waited on me was surprised too. At home we use centimeters for measuring size. Living in Villa Park, going to school, and many times making mistakes like these have been wonderful experiences I have learned many things about America and American people, their friendliness and hospitality. I hope I have given you some brief ideas about my country. Ihave many new friends here and I think it will be hard for me to say good-bye when injune I will go back to Brazil.
