ENGLISH ... A SAFE DEPOSIT FOR THE FUTURE Left to right are: Mrs. Hankins, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Draine. The first mark of the educated man or woman is his use of English. Our efficiency in any walk of life will be hindered in a hundred ways by slipshod sentences, stumbling speech, and inability to find the right words to express our meaning. English Two, Three, Four are mandatory for all students. Through these years of English, students can excel their skills in speaking, composing, memorizing, diagraming and punctuating sentences. English Two provides material for a broader appreciation of literature will include selections from the classics as well as those from current writings, which are arranged by types—short story, poetry, nonfiction, and drama. Emphasis is also placed on spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary improvement. 21

English Three includes the development of American literature and a study of the growth of modern American literature and a study of the growth of America through its writers and their contributions. The emphasis in oral and written composition is on the development of a well-organized paragraph, transitional devices in sentences and paragraphs. English Four includes a review in the fundamentals of grammar and composition for those students needing it. This course gives practice in creative expression, letters of application, social correspondence, precis, critical analysis, and a source theme. The literature includes a survey of our English heritage as reflected in the writing of great authors from Anglo Saxon to the present day. 22
