NEPTUNE 31,COO Mi. Diu, NSTRUCTION ROCKET CO o high school offers a privilege for service to any person who is well pre¬ pared. May we think of the years spent at Williston Senior High as the initial period of preparation for the opportunities that lie before us. Through our continued sacrifices and a determined effort to achieve perfection in our selected vocations, we may help our community to find a solyiifilPgS many of its perplexing problems. Now the time has come for us to part. As we leave behind these rtals of Williston Senior High, we leave Behind the cherished memories that have endeared us to our Alma Mater. As we move on to blaze new trails, maf we stop and cherish those memories once again through the activities andjof ;stal sp£ This yearbook we offer to the 1960 graduating class of Williston High. Many years from now, we may want to relive those days Dear Alma Mater. Samuel Galley, Editor-in-Chief Roger M. Aiken, Associate Editor CLASS SONG Tune, Auld Lang Syne Dear Williston, we ' re leaving you And we should like to say, The love and wisdom that you gave Are things we can’t repay. Thy standards we’ll uphold for thee In everything we do; We’ll do our best to reach our goals And prove our worth to you. Chorus: Dear Williston, Dear Williston, Our alma mater true, Though you ' re the one we love so dear; ' Tis time to say Adieu. CLASS POEM year is done, and our sorrow Hangs o ' er us in the air Like a blanket that covers the morrow Leaving fear and uncertainty there. W We strive hard to see what ' s before us Through distance and through mist; And a feeling of sadness comes o ' er us Melancholy our souls can ' t resist. Dear Williston , ere our departure To sail now for new ports of call, As off-springs of this alma mater We promise our standards won ' t fall. t® : 3? % ' h „ ■ ’-.k. Mary Wright £dh a OWKi °A TA o I. Down deep in our hearts lies a love so strong and true A love for thee, Dear Williston, We cherish thy name and thy precepts, too All our loyalty we give, Dear School, to you. (Chorus) Our voices we raise in a song of thy praise, The greatest school under the sun. We ' ll ever adore Alma Mater Dear, Ever lift our praise to you, Dear Williston. II. If ever we falter or if we ever fail, From thee we new courage shall gain. Thy standards uphold when ordeals assail; For we love and honor Williston ' s dear name. Music by James Thompson, Jr. Class of ' 34 Words by Mrs. C.H. Robinson Class of ' 27 B ecause we admire and respect him for his integrity, and for his genuine interest in us, because he takes pride in our sorrows and successes when we fail, because he has dedicated himself to our advancement and sets for us an example by which we may live, we the gradu¬ ating class of 1960, dedicate the 1960 Willistonian in its entireity to Mr. B. T. Washington Mr. Washington, a native of Alabama, was graduated from the high school of Talladega College, Talladega, Alabama; earned his A. B. degree at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania; did graduate study at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia; Alabama State College, Montgom¬ ery, Alabama and received his M. He came to Williston Industrial School as a teacher of biology and chemistry, and later distinguished himself as a principal of Williston Primary School before becoming principal of Williston Senior High School. His professional affiliations include membership in the National Education Association, North Carolina Teachers’ Association, New Hanover Unit of North Carolina Teachers ' Assoc¬ iation, Elementary School Principals ' Association, Secondary School Principals, and National Society for the Study of Education. He is also treasurer of the North Carolina High School Athletic Conference, and Dean of Students of the Williston College Unit of Wilmington College. In recognition of his outstanding work in Resource Education, he was invited by the National Association for the Advancement of Science to present a demonstration at the Phila¬ delphia meeting and at the Resource Use Education Committee at the University of North Caro¬ lina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Not only in education circles but in community activities also his influence is felt. He is a faithful member of Chestnut Street Presbyterian Church, where he is presently an elder and superintendent of the Sunday School. As one of the directors of the Boy ' s Club he served as treasurer for the initial drive to purchase the present building. He is also the treasurer of the Wilmington Colored Library Board. Our dedication is in appreciation for his sincerity and devotion. 3pw V- V ' •J y v .x t Junetta Williams . . .the Miss Williston for 1959-60, is indeed the epitome of the ideal. All of the qualities desired of Miss Williston--beauty, attractive personality, culture, and scholarship--she possesses. The election and coronation of our Miss Williston attracts the interest of all Willistonians. The event in itself is outstanding, but in retrospect, it is the highlight of the extracurricular activi¬ ties. All candidates for Miss Williston are carefully chosen from the girls of the senior class, and the election is an attestation of the popularity of the successful candidate. CLASS HISTORY A group of inexperienced explorers, better known as Sophomores , began making the preparations expedient for the Three Staged Journey . Realizing that in unity there is strength, we Sophomores began by organizing and choosing our leaders. After much deliberation we chose: Gerald Corbett Willie Merrick Mary Wilkins Doris Lewis Ruby Rhederick President Vice-President Secretary Assistant Secretary Treasurer Our first activity began with our participating in the annual Sophomore Talent Show Nina Whitted eli cits favorable comment as announcer. James Brown displayed remarkable dramatic ability by reading a popular dialogue, When Malindy Sings . Hysterical is hardly the word to describe the effect Tenner Young’s version of Let ' s Go to the Hop had on the audience. Homemade music can sometimes produce startling effects, especially if the song is Catch a Falling Star and the group singing includes Mary Wright, Alexezener McQueen, Victoria Burney, Bettie Charles, Jean Gerald and Carol Tyson. It seems that we Sophomores were quite dulcet singers.... Who could forget this harmonious trio: Carol Tyson, Victoria Burney and Barbara McNiell: Sugartime was their number. We ended our show with Joyce Nixon ' s unforgettable You Are My Destiny . Eleven of our boys, finding themselves athletically inclined, joined the Basketball Team, and in no time at all had proved themselves valuable assets. There was never anything like it is the befitting phrase we associated with the Sophomore Party”. Perhaps it was spring in the air, but we’re sure it was the atmosphere of gaiety and loveliness that resulted from the colorful decorations and the attractiveness of each one’s appearance that added so much glamour to the occasion. As Sophomores we witnessed the first Varsity Ball which was such a great success that it was made an annual affair. W i th the com Pletion of the First Stage of our Journey, Sophmores had branched out into many ifferent fields, taking part in extra-curricular activities such as the Band, the Dramatic Club, the Glee lub, the Student Council, the Echo Staff, the Math Club, the Future Teachers Club, the Future Nurses Club, the NHA, the NCSIO, and the Athletic Teams. History - Continued With renewed vigor, as a result of summer vacation, Second Stage . To lead us we elected: we as Juniors began enthusiastically on our Gerald Corbett Nina Whitted Carolyn Mosley Doris Lewis Rosemarie Woods Helen Williams Gerald Turnage President Vice-President Secretary Assistant Secretary Treasurer Chaplain Parliamentarian Because we recognized everything worthwhile is accomplished by hard work, sixteen Juniors were selected members of the Honor Society. We were quite proud of Arthur Gray, Vietta Hall, Franklin Wheel¬ er, Harriett Pierce, Gwendolyn Cheek, Shirley Howard, Bettie Charles, Mary Wilkins, Alvenia Jordan, Nina Whitted, Mary Wright, Geraldine Williams, Robert Dudley, Gerald Turnage, Lillie Campbell, and Edna Nixon. A climactic event of our Junior year was the Student Council Election in which all the members of the student body took part. We were fortunate to have from our class Mary Wright as secretary, Alexan¬ der Locke as parliamentarian and Samuel Galley as Treasurer. As is traditional the vice-president suc¬ ceeds to the presidency. In this case it was Gerald Turnage. We Juniors not only received local recognition but state-wide recognition as well. James Brown was elected Chaplain of the State Hi-Y, Willie Jean Simmons, State Vice-President of the Library Club, Mary Wright, State President of the Crown and Scepter Club, and State Secretary of the Student Council, and Lillie Campbell was elected State Delegate of the 4-H Club in Washington, D. C. In sports, also, there were Juniors. The victorious Tigers won the District Championship and became State Runner-up. Naturally we were a bit pompous because on the team were such Juniors as Mar¬ vin Stokes, William Crummy, Gerald Turnage and William Bell. One Enchanted Evening , the theme of an unforgettable affair. It was our Junior-Senior Prom, when we were hosts to the Seniors. We ' re still wondering if the brilliant glare that seemed to be in our midst originated from the crystal ball that was a part of the scenery or from our eyes, shiny with happi¬ ness and expectation. Amid our many activities we took the California Test, and a few were even selected to take the Intercollegiate Examination. With the completion of the Second Stage , Nina Whitted and Shirley Howard were invited to take part in A. T.”s Math and Science Institute Training Program; Alexander Locke and Gerald Turnage, representatives of the Student Council, were chosen to attend a workshop at Shaw Uni¬ versity in Raleigh. We were now nearing our Third Stage and were silently vowing to compensate for the mistakes we had made and the things we had left undone. Since this was the third and final stage we (seniors at last) were determined to make this a good one. Holding offices were: Gerald Turnage Samuel Galley Edna Nixon Junetta Williams Robert Dudley Shirley Harvin Alexander Locke President Vice-President Secretary Assistant Secretary Treasurer Chaplain Parliamentarian Miss Varsity of 1959 Zenobia Freeman Miss Williston and Attendants (left to right): E Stella Bennett Mary Wilkins Dorothy Lacewell Brenda Roberts Willie Jean Simmons (Seated) Junetta Williams, Miss Williston The Crowning of Miss Varsity Her Attendants (left to right): Billie A. Burnett Geraldine Simpson Delores Davis Barbara Ferguson Miss Varsity Doris Smoot Margaret McAlphin Mabel Lee Lamice Hardy Flora Sampson 1958 Junior Varsity Initation of Crown and Scepter Members for 1959 History - Continued Confronted with first things first, we organized the Annual Staff. Because we knew he was willing and capable, Samuel Galley was chosen Editor-in-chief. Roger Aiken was assistant editor and Victoria Burney, Business Manager. Others to be commended for their fine work include Delores Samuels, George Nixon, Nina Whitted, William Irving and Robert Johnson. The Miss Williston contest, an annual event looked forward to by most senior girls, is ac¬ companied by the hustle and bustle of compaigning, speeches, ceremonies and the age-old question, Who will be Miss Williston? Because of her personality, Junetta Williams was chosen to reign for the year 1959-60. Her attendants were Estella Bennett, Dorothy Lacewell, Brenda Roberts, Willie Jean Simmons, and Mary Wilkins. Following the excitement of the election was the Coronation Ball, given in honor of Miss Williston and her court. October 24, 1959, at 2:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning three bus loads of Seniors could be seen bound to Greensboro. Filled with anticipation and excitement, we arrived on the A. and T. Campus. Senior Day was the event and from the time we arrived until the time we left, A. and T. students displayed fine hospitality toward us. As we visited their schools of Agriculture, Engineering, Education and General Studies, Nursing, their Technical Institute and other buildings, we were quite astonished by their wide and diversified curriculum which can be not only advantageous but enjoyable as well. We knew we had much more to do before graduation, but after selecting our class rings, we felt a surge of pride and knew graduation was closer. How true the saying, Time and Tide wait for no man. We were now in the process of producing the Senior play, Dressed to Kill. We knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that it would be a great success, especially with such directors as Mrs. C. H. Robinson, Mrs. E. Boykin, Mr. M. Johnson and Mr. C. Mason and a cast of such dramatic talent as Shirley Harvin, Mary Wilkins, Jean Gerald, Gwendolyn Cheek, Joan Wise, Willie Jean Simmons, Delores Samuels, William Bell, Nina Whitted, Franklin Wheeler, Harold Spencer, Jerome Muldrow, Richard Cliette, and Legrande Baldwin. Before completing the third stage, we will take part in Class Night and that long awaited event Commencement”. Commencementwillmeanthatourthirdstageis now finished. But we Williston Seniors have by no means attained our goal. We’ve just started our journey into the unknown, where we hope to discover new horizons and to undertake feats never before accomplished, thereby proving to our devoted Faculty that their unfaltering guidance, patient endurance, and helpful advice were not in vain. As we come face to face with trying situations and problems arising from this Space Age, we Seniors of 1960 will tackle them with this thought: Let us strive on ' til victory is won. Now that you are leaving, may you have the assurance that the preparation you have received here has been sound and that you have no fear of keeping up with t he onward march of progress. It is my desire that you will not be content with just having finished high school, but will have been so inspired that you will set for yourselves new heights and now you are impatiently waiting to begin this new adventure. May I congratulate all of you who had the courage and patience to complete this phase of your education, and as you enter your post high school activities, my wish is that you will enjoy happiness and success in whatever endeavor you will find yourself. Sincerely, B. T. Washington, Principal Mr. J. H. Harris, Assistant Principal Build thee more stately mansions oh my soul ... There is always a great deal of pleasure derived from working with students — especially students who strive to get out of each day all that it has to offer and create for themselves higher . . .vaulted domes as the swift seasons roll . Not everyone will desire to leave his low-vaulted past , but I sincerely trust that each member of the class of ' 60 will accept the tried and proven experiences of those who have come this way before and add to these his own discoveries of truth and go on to help make life more meaningful for himself and those who shall come after. Now, however, it is intensifying its efforts to teach pupils through the use of verbal symbols to understand themselves and their neighbors. This is extremely important in an age when a failure to communicate with clarity, wisdom, and understand¬ ing can lead men and nations to disaster. Mr. C. W. Mason Mrs. V. H. Merrick Mrs. C. H. Your publication has steadily improved throughout the years until now it is on a par with the best in the land. The difference between the morale of your school 24 years ago when I came to Wilmington, and now, is the best proof that definite, permanent and rapid progress has been made in all phases of your school life. My best wishes are extended to each and every member of the 1960 Graduating Class. May success, happiness and good health attend you throughout the years to come. Mr. H. M. ROLAND, Superintendent H. M. Roland Superintendent of Schools You who have successfully completed the requirements for graduation from Williston Senior High School will receive a high school diploma at the close of the 1959-1960 term. May I extend to you my heartiest congratulations on this achieve¬ ment. On June 30, 1960, I shall retire from active service in the New Hanover County Schools. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to work with the students of Williston Senior High during the past thirty-five years. During these years each graduating class has achieved a higher degree of scholarship than did the class of the previous year. You, the graduating class of 1960, have made excellent progress, and I anticipate for each of you a prosperous, happy, and successful life. The efficient administrative staff and faculty of Williston have made it one of the best high schools in North Carolina. You owe much to the outstanding and tireless work of this school ' s faculty.
