Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1956 volume:

WIL LI ST O NIA N All the world ' s a stage, and all the people merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts. The above quotation expresses the sincere emotions of each member of the senior class as we recollect days of yester year that can never be for¬ gotten, and as we go forth into the world with the determination to play well our role on the stage of life. During the twelve years of school work that the graduating class has passed through, the mem¬ bers have played many parts -- scholar, athlete, philanthropist, club worker, journalist, and actor. With the aid of photography, we give you a retro¬ spective glance into the past three years of our school career. Jesse Woods, Jr. Editor-in-chief Because through the years he has rendered his services gen¬ erously, because of his unsurpassed patience with us and because of his untiring efforts to help us go forward, we the graduating class of 1956, do dedicate the 1956 Willistohian in its entirity to MR. WILLIAM GRADY LOWE Mr. Lowe, a native Wilmingtonian, was graduated from Williston Industrial High School in ' the class of 1942. After several years of service in the. Armed ' Forces, he earned his bachelor of Arts Degree from Johnson C. Smith at Charlotte, North Carolina. For the past six years he has taught Government at Williston and has been an invaluable assistant in the work of the Hi-Y and Stu- ; ‘dent Council Organizations. Mr. Lowe is not only a teacher but a friend. His sincerity and devotion are appreciated by the members of the class of 1956. MR. WILLIAM GRADY LOWE NEW HANOVER COUNTY Greetings to the Class of 1956. You will be the largest number of students to graduate at Williston Senior High School in the history of the school. Williston Academy opened its doors for the first time in October, 1873. It is the oldest public school, that has retained the same name, in New Hanover County. There are very few schools in the State that can go back over so long a history under the same name. I am sure we can depend upon each of you to continue to add to the great service this school has rendered to the County, State and Nation. H. M. Roland Superintendent of Schools Mr. H. M. ROLAND, Superintendent Mr. J. W. GRISE, Ass ' t. Supt. I should like to extend to you, the Graduating Class of 1956, my sincere congratulations. During the past twelve years of your life the schools of New Hanover County have given you an opportunity to obtain a thorough education. If you have availed yourselves of this opportunity to the best of your ability, you are now prepared for further study in college or to take your place as useful citizens in our com¬ munity. You are graduating in an age of uncertainty, of change, of progress, and many other unforseen problems. Upon each of you will fall the obligation and duty of meeting and helping to solve these problems in our county, state and nation. In the years ahead my hope is that you will conduct yourselves in such a way as will make Williston Senior High proud of you and that the county and state may be assured that they made a wise investment in your education. J. W. Grise Assistant Superintendent BOARD OF EDUCATION Dr. J. T. Hoggard Chairman Dr. W. C. Mebane D. K. Spencer C. D. Hogue, Sr. Attorney C. D. Hogue, Jr. Attorney J. O. Marshall Business Manager Mrs. J.C. Birmingham B. T. WASHINGTON - PRINCIPAL Permit me to congratulate you, the Class of 1956, for making it possible to present to your classmates and friends a pictorial account of some of the activities carried on here at Williston. The accounts here recorded in words and pictures will be yours to cherish for life. I am certain that your three years here have been happy and profitable and that there is nothing for which you would exchange them. As you leave Williston, you may take with you the best that Williston had to offer, and may you find joy and happiness in serving your community and country. J. H. HARRIS, JR. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL You, the members of the Class of ' 56, are to be congratulated on having done many worthwhile and commendable things. The publication of this book, your graduation from high school, your gift to your Alma Mater, and your participation in school activities are a few of the many accomplishments you can look back to with pride. Now, as you enter into a world of modern miracles and progress but also of strife, injustice, malice and frustration, I wish to commend for your consideration these lines from the first verse of the twelfth chapter of Hebrews: Wherefore seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside ever weight (ignorance, poverty, laziness, uncouthness, etc.) and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” J. ' s. .s - i- V — ‘ % 0 . + • To us, the graduating class of 1956, sand did not seem to begin to trickle down the hourglass until early September 1951. We, the first class to enter the new Willis ton Senior High School as Sophomores were very proud of our new school. Hence, we were more determined than ever to be a success. Boosted by our new and beautiful surroundings, we eagerly joined in the school activities. We got right down to business. First on the agenda was the organizing of our Sophomore Class, which at that time had three hundred student members and seven faculty members. The outcome was as follows: President.Arthalia Bordeaux Vice President.Russell Rhames Secretary.Lottie Johnson Assistant Secretary.Gwendolyn Wallace Treasurer.Samuel Bowens Chaplain.Earl Cheek Soon after we completed our class organization, we began to develop our talents by joining extra-curricular activities. Walter Moore, Margaret Sampson, Hortense McRae, Lottie Patrick, Arthalia Bordeaux, Josie Mae Pierce, and Charles King made the band. In Student leadership, the class of 1956 was well represented on the Student Council. Ar¬ thalia Bordeaux was fortunate to be chosen by the Student Council to be the Sophomore Delegate to the State Student Council Convention in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, along with two Junior and two Senior delegates, while Mary Collins served as a local Tenth Grade representative to our Student Council. The crowning social event of our first year in senior high school was the Sophomore Bail. Walter Greene proved himself to be very efficient as chairman of the Social Committee that made plans for the ball. Some of us were chosen to run for officers of our Student Council. These persons chosen to run for officers were as follows: for Vice President: Charles King, Arthalia Bordeaux and Dora Lowe; for Assistant Secretary, Alfred Ennett, Carlotta Saunders and Elsie Fullwood. The results of the election were as follows: Vice-President-Arthalia Bordeaux and Assistant Secretary-Alfred Ennett. We, having worried our teachers as much as possible and having acquired all of the knowledge that we as Sophomores thought we possibly could, left for our summer vacation. We returned after three months ' vacation full of determination to become members of the Crown and Scepter Club. All of us were not successful in the endeavor; however some of us were. These successful persons were: Alfred Ennett, George Bosier, Alberta Hawkins, Lillian Gause, Rejenia Bennett, Judson Mills, Carl Parker, Jesse Woods, Inez Frager, Gerthenia Jones, Geneva Crosby, Lottie Patrick, Margaret Sampson, Betty McIntyre, Dorothy Allen, Joseph Lawson, Walter Moore, Charles King, Angela Spencer, Eddrena Thompson, Pearlie Carmon, Mary Stukes, Shirley Melvin, Betty Foye, Carrie Wright, Barbara Johnson, Willie Harrison, Samuel Jenkins, James Colt, Carolyn Lewis, Arthalia Bordeaux, Phyllis Whitley, William M u r r a y, Russell Rhames, Thurman Johnson, Kathleen Taylor, Barbara Hankins, Hazel Sidberry, Mabel Grady, Edith Taylor, Parthenia Wright, Joyce Norman, Margaret Reaves, James McRae and Fredrick Sanders. Knowing that we were to be the sponsoring classof the Junior-Senior Prom, we did not hesitate to begin planning early for this event. We first organized our Junior Class, which had dropped from three hundred-twenty members to two hundred- seventy-eight members. These officers were elect¬ ed as follows: , Zack Davis, Eastover Thames, Hortense EXTERIOR OF GYMNASIUM Class History (CONTINUED) President. Vice President. Secretary . Assistant Secretary Treasurer . Chaplain. Arthalia Bordeaux Lottie Johnson Angela Spencer Rejenia Bennett Charles King Earl Cheek When our school acted as host to the State Student Council Annual Convention, this represent¬ ed one of the crowning events of student activity. Mr. Jackie Robinson was our guest of honor. Those persons chosen to run for state offices were Charles King for President; Lois Bryant for Secretary and Russell Rhames for Treasurer. Willi ston was honored by the Convention with Charles King ' s election to the office of the State Student Council President. Our local council chose Earl Cheek as its President, Alfred Ennett, Secretary; Willie Harri¬ son, Treasurer, and Eddrean Thompson, Parliamentarian for the year of 1955-1956. The class of 1956 proved itself to be outstanding in scholarship as well as in student govern¬ ment; for Alfred Ennett and Angela Spencer ranked so high on the Inter-Collegiate Scholarship Exam¬ ination that they were accepted as college freshmen at Fisk University at the end of their Junior year in high school. Near the close of the school year, the Crown and Scepter Club chose as its officers for the year of 1955-1956, the following: President.Thurman Johnson Vice President.James N. Colt Secretary.Kathleen Taylor Assistant Secretary.Gerthenia Jones Treasurer.George Bosier Chaplain.Lottie Patrick To us our Junior-Senior Prom was the most beautiful one to be held in our new gymnasium. The French motif in decoration, program, and menu, drew sighs of admiration from all. Having made as many A ' s, B ' s, C ' s, D ' s and E ' s as we could, we returned home for another summer vacation. Well, there we were back in school again doing Readin ' , ' Ritin ' , and ' Rithmetic, and even though we dreaded it, some of us were doing Physics and Geometry. The class had decreased slowly year by year until there were two hundred and one faithful souls returning to run the last lap of the journey. Soon after our return we selected: James Colt.President William Small.Vice President Bobra Collins.Secretary Alice F. Royal.Assistant Secretary Adolphe Greene.Treasurer Earl Cheek.Chaplain (for the third consecutive year) No sooner had we chosen our class officers, than we began to make plans for the class annual. Jesse Woods was chosen Editor-in-chief and Walter Greene, chairman of the Advertisement Committee of our annual staff. Bobra Collins was chosen by the Student Council as its Secretary since Alfred Ennett was not to be in our school, but in college. Our football season will be one long to be remembered. We are sure that such senior stal¬ warts as Samuel Bowens, Russell Rhames, Willie Harvey, William Murray, Willie Harrison, Elmore Rogers, TreviaKeith, Willie Parker, andFreddie Doe, boosted Dear Williston on to the Eastern Cham¬ pionship. One activity that most of us enjoyed was the trip to A. and T. College in Greensboro, North Carolina. We were happy to see some of Williston ' s graduates of 1954 and 1955. Among these were Walter McAllister, who is President of the F reshman Class at A. and T., James Banister, George Halsey and James Moore. Yes, we really did enjoy our one day at College. As we look forward to that grand day when we will receive our diplomas and all the honors we have earned, our hearts begin to fill with the most sincere appreciation for the kind spirit and patience that our beloved faculty members have exhibited to us throughout the years. I have just received my Ph. D. Degree in Science from Princeton Research Laboratory and have been assigned to be a delegate to the World Science Conference Meeting in Genoa, Italy. Having read in the New Jersey Advocate of Bobra Collins, one of my classmates of ' 56, I dec¬ ided to call her. Her line was busy, so I thought the short walk to her home would help me. She was scheduled to do a concert in Rome, a short distance from Genoa, where the World Science Conference would be held. When I had walked about three blocks, I came to an elaborate newsstand and sweet shop. To my surprise I learned that the proprietor was James Colt, a member of my graduating class. Stop- ingto chat with him, I picked up a magazine. On the front cover was the beautiful model, Delores Woods. The magazine was edited by Arthur Stewart and the cartoons were drawn by Mabel Grady, Thomas Duren, Zack Davis and George Cleamons. Turning the page, I saw an advertisement of M.G.M. ' s latest release. The stars of this movie were Barbara Hankins, William Swett, Deon Pertelle, Gwendolyn Wallace, and her fiance Frederick Saunders. The director was Jesse Woods. The musical background was under the direction of that new music bombshell, Walter Moore. In his orchestra were some of our classmates: Gerthenia Jones, Willie Moore, Hortense McRae and Delores Hall. When I looked up the street, I saw Bobra. After greeting her she showed me an article in the society column of the News and Observer. It stated that Alice Faye Royal was married to George Waddell and William Murray and Samuel Bowens were going on their second honey moon with their wives. I might mention here that Arthur Wade was editor-in-chief of the paper. Bobra told me of an old fortune teller, who not only predicts the future, but also tells what has happened in the past! We decided to visit her. Our interest in knowing how our classmates turn¬ ed out was unbearable. Hailing a taxi at the corner, we were very much surprised to find Joseph Carpenter driving and managing a chain of cabs. Some of his capable drivers were: Wolvern Robinson, Robert Parker and Creston Greene. Upon arriving at Madam Fifi ' s place, we noticed that the apartment was very elaborately designed by Charles King and Lottie Patrick. The architecture and interior decoration of the build¬ ing were marvelous. To our surprise, we were cordially welcomed and introduced to Madam Fifi by Geneva Drayton, her most humble maid. She was commended for excellent services by the Madam. Knowing what we wanted, she told us that John Wilbur Stukes was now proprietor and chef of a large motel in Havana, Cuba. Some of his highly rated assistants were Pearlie Carmon, his efficient accountant, and Margaret Reaves. Floor shows were held nightly with Janie Baker, Phyllis Lockhart, Ruth Maultsby and Eddrena Thompson as dancers. Appearing there some nights were vocalists Shirley Hewett, Lottie Johnson, Anne Worthy and Betty Foye. She also said Parthenia Wright, Bettye McIntyre, Carrie Wright, Inez Frager and Joseph Lawson were year-round patrons of Stukes Resort Motel. Realizing that while hearing of our dearly beloved classmates ' success we had become de¬ hydrated, Madam rang for her butler. To our surprise the butler was Trevia Keith. As we drank, she told us that we had some very dependable nurses from our class. These honorable nurses were Carolyn Lewis, Velma Johnson, Geneva Crosby, Dorothy Fredlaw, Minnie Singletary, and Lubertha Bosier. Some doctors were Judson Mills, Willie Mae Canady, Leon Walker, George Bosier, William Swett, and Bernard Johnson. Interrupting us, her son came in to show his report card to her. We learned that some of the teachers in his school were: Mrs. Charles Hargett, the former Margaret Sampson, Miss Phyllis Class Prophecy (CONTINUED) Whitley, who was dtill engaged to Norris Sidberry, and Miss Kathleen Taylor. Walter Greene was teacher of science and Francis Roland was his private secretary. Mary Stukes was employed with the school as a librarian. Dorothy Allen was her assistant. Next door to the school was a nursery with Minnie Evans in charge. She loved working with young children. All at once we were startled by noises outside that sounded like a parade. Yes, it was one, celebrating the election of the mayor, Earl Cheek. Alongwithhim rode his lovely wife Mary Collins. Julia Robinson directed the band which belonged to a nearby college which Gloria Artis has been attend¬ ing. Madam beckoned us back to our seats and mentioned that Lillian Gause, who had married a very rich Frenchman, was now touring the world. She, by the way, had three Cadillacs of her own. Esther Stokes had also married a very rich gentleman, who buys her mink coats and cars ever so often. Among the wealthy, Stephen Nix had struck oil in Texas. There were many successful members of the class whom I could not remember; however, we thanked and paid Madam Fifi for the information that she had given us. On our way home, we stopped in a large restaurant and ordered lunch. The name of the place was Rand H ' s Restaurant. While eating, we learned that Russell Rhames and ' Frank Harrison were the owners of the place. Geraldine Foye, Gretchen Miller, Bettye Mitchell, and Elizabeth Grady were waitresses here. Being greatly pleased with the delicious lunch, we decided to take in a movie. Tony Curtis was starring with Lillian Davis, the new Marilyn Monroe, as his opposite. In the news, William Small was commentator of the year. We enjoyed the picture. In the coming attraction Joyce Norman, Henrietta McBride, Joe Lee Greene, and Russell Willis starred. Russell Willis was also known as the second Victor Mature. After spending some time in the movies, we left. In the lobby of the theater, Elizabeth Jackson and Margaret Reaves told us that their husbands were waiting outside for them. As we were leaving the theater, Lois Bryant was going on duty in the ticket box. She liked her job very much. Without seeing anyone else we knew, we went to Bobra ' s apartment. As we arrived, two of her friends were leaving. She introduced the handsome gentlemen to me, and they later told us that they would simply love to dine with us. They left after saying they would call for us at my apartment. Bobra dressed and then went home with me so that I might dress. The gentlemen called for us and took us to a very large night club, The Casino . It was the largest night club I had ever seen. Since Bobra had been there before, she wasn ' t so excited as I. The music of the orchestra was enchanting. I thought it was Liomel Hampton directing but instead it was Adolphe Greene, who was making all the ladies swoon with his crazy saxophone”. The customers liked Greene ' s music so much they requested a return engagement. The next number was rendered by Carl Parker ' s band, we then left. Our escorts promised to take us to the Casino again. It was late and we decided to end our evening. On our way home we met Rejenia Bennett, Eloise Sidberry and Josie Pierce, who were now secretaries. They said they had a house party and had decided to drop over to hear Greene ' s band. They were wearing very lovely dresses. By inquiring, we learned that they were designed by Nettie Stokes and Barbara Johnson. Bidding them good night, we went on our way. As we, the gentlemen, Bobra and I arrived at home, I was very tierd. Bobra consented to stay with me for the night. We told our escorts good¬ night and thanked them for the wonderful evening. We then went inside. It was hard for us to go to sleep, although we were exhausted from our experience during the day, because we were thinking about the things we had found out, the people we had met, and of the success of our dear classmates who had proudly clung to their diplomas, which they had received in 1956, We talked a while about our trip to Rome and hoped we would see more members of our class, prosperous and happy. Arthalia Bordeaux and Bobra Collins WILLISTONIANS ON THE CAMPUS OF A T COLLEGE GREENSBORO TRIP 1955 SENIOR DAY Approximately 120 Seniors from Williston along with three sponsors; Mrs. Merrick, Mr. Lowe, and Mr. Peebles, journeyed to Greensboro, North Carolina to be the guests at A. T. College on Senior Day, Oct¬ ober 23, 1955, The Seniors left Williston about 3:25 A.M. and arrived at A. T. at approximately 9:30 A.M. First, we were registered. Afterwards, the group made a tour of the vocational department. At lunch time delicious lunches were served. There were girls and boys from other schools with whom the boys and girls from Williston danced and socialized. The group also met many Williston graduates, who made them feel very much at home. The most thrilling attraction of the day was the game between the A. T. Band and R.O.T.C. Immediately after the game everyone had supper in the school ' s cafe¬ teria. After a most enjoyable day, the Willistonians said their goodbyes to their old and new friends, then boarded the bus for home. They ar¬ rived in Wilmington about 10:30 P.M. He probably would have uttered a sten¬ torian No . No, nobody, not even Coach Robinson had the faintest idea of anything of that sort, although the coach dreams of the Tigers winning a championship every night. This was the big surprise -- The Williston Tigers ended the season with a perfect record of nine wins and no losses. Yes, they won the AAA Championship in Football. Let ' s get a flashback of this football season. September 16 The Tigers started out fast and furious. They rocked Raleigh 19-6 for their first victory of the season. September 23 Williston waltzed back from Kinston after trouncing the Pirates 14-0. September 30 The blood-thirsty Tigers, for their third consecutive victory, tore Elizabeth City up 19-0. October 7 The Tigers walloped New Bern. They white-washed the warriors 21-0. October 14 Williston trounced the Wilson Trojans 20-6 in the Tigers ' gay homecoming. October 21 Sam The Man Bowens displayed his versatile ability as he put on a one man show and led the Tigers to dump Durham 25-0. November 4 The Tigers continued clawing as they clobbered Fayetteville 21-0. November 11 Washington ' s Bookers forfeited the game and The Tigers automatically won the game 1-0, thus ending our season of playing with an eight zero record and with the distinction of being Champions of the Eastern District. November 18 A play off was staged between Hillside and Williston for the Eastern District Championship in Legion Stadium. Williston scored its lone touchdown in the third stanza, where Elmore Rogers took the punt and returned it 49 yards to Durham ' s 11. Russell Rhames then banged down to the one yard line and Sam Bowens scampered into the stripes for the tally. Bowens booted the placement and the Tigers took a 7-0 lead and held it throughout the game. The Tigers defense was paced by Willie Harvey, Ross Wilkins, William Murray, and Willie Frank Harrison. The Tigers cruised into Winston-Salem November 24th, for the Championship game. The game was played the next day at 2 P.M. in Bowman-Gray Stadium. Carver scored in the 1st quarter and dazzled the Tigers throughout the first half. The Tigers sprang out the 2nd half with spirit aglow. The touchdown twins, Rogers and Rhames, moved like ghosts. Bowens was dynamite. Murray, Harvey, Wilkins, and Keith formed a stone wall. As soon as the Tigers took possession of the ball, they scored a T.D. The drive was sparked by a 42 yard sprint by Russell Rhames. After a series of plays, Willie Frank Harrison intercepted one of Tillery’s passes and scampered 25 yards before the Yellow Jackets could swarm in and make the tackle. Later Bowens th rew a pass to right end, Charles Perry in the end zone. Perry made a most spec¬ tacular catch. He dived upon the ground, reached out and juggled the ball, before finally catch¬ ing it. Carver threatened in the final minutes of the game, but time ran out. A Championship was won by Champions. The immortal Samuel Bowens, Willie Frank Har¬ rison, Willie Harvey, William Murray, and the Touchdown Twins, Russell Rhames and Elmore Rogers played for Williston for the last times in their lives. The twins would run no more; Bowens had called his last play; Willie Harvey and Trevia Keith had defended the Tigers lives for the last times; William Murray and Willie Harrison had caught their last passes -- but they had claimed a championship for the greatest school under the sun -- Williston Senior High Down deep in their hearts lies a love and a memory for what they did. They did not falter or fail, for they loved and honored Dear Williston ' s name. They brought a championship TO YOU. Of course the performance in the Azalea Festival will be greater, but on this occasion the band will be without a director because of the fact that the Junior High Band will participate in the parade, and Mr. R. J. Floyd is the director of both bands. Our Symphony Band gave a concert for the State Parent Teachers ' Association and for the District Teachers ' Meeting. Constance O ' Dell, has made several public appearances during this school year. Although we have lost several strong voices due to graduation, we have tried to accomplish our aim. A few of the appearances we have made include a trip to Camp Lejeune, a concert at Ebenezer Baptist Church, singing for the Rotary and Lion ' s Club at the Friendly Cafeteria, a Christmas concert at our school, singing for the Teachers ' Association at W illiston Junior High, and recently, we appeared in the Festival of Music presented by Central Baptist Church at our school. Over a period of years, we have maintained relationships with several Glee Clubs from other cities. As a result, Fayetteville will appear here in a concert on April 10th or 11th, and Kinston will be here on March 15th to render a concert. We will exchange programs with Fayetteville and Kinston. Very soon we are going to Durham and Columbia, South Carolina. We will represent our school in the District, State, and County Festivals on April 6, 27, and May 1, respectively. At the beginning of the school year, we elected officers for the year 1955-56. They are as follows: Bobra Collins, President; Earl Cheek, Vice-President; Lydia Aiken, Sec¬ retary; Shirley Hewett, Assistant Secretary; Barbara Ennett, Treasurer; and Joyce Norman, Chaplain. The ac¬ tivities for the year began a week prior to the opening of school. At this meeting activities for assisting new students on the opening day of school were planned. These activities included the distribution of a di¬ rectory to each student and any other assistance found necessary. The first assembly for the year was also planned at the initial meeting. At the second meeting of the Council, the roster of officers was completed. Officers were: Earl Cheek, President; James Sterling, Vice President; Bobra Collins, Secretary; Carol Willis, Assistant Sec¬ retary; Willie Frank Harrison, Treasurer; Eddrena Thompson, Parliamentarian. The complete Council consists of the above officers, two representatives from each of the twenty home rooms and six sponsors. The sponsors are: Mrs. M. D. Grady, Chairman; Mrs. A. C. King, Mrs. A. G. Burnett, Mrs. C. H. Robinson, Mrs. L. S. Williams, and Mr. W. G. Lowe. Ten committees were appointed to plan and execute, with the help of the sponsors and students, the projects selected by the Council for the year. The committees formed were as follows: 1. The Handbook Committee keeps an up-to-date handbook of information concerning the school. Gladys Trapp, chairman. 2. The Program Committee plans an assembly and other programs sponsored by the Council. James Sterl¬ ing, chairman. 3. Student Activity Room Committee makes the Activity Room attractive. Norma Spencer, chairman. 4. The Monitor Committee sees that halls, lobbies, and other passing areas are orderly and performs other duties formerly delegated to teachers. Eddrena Thompson, Chairman. 5. Constitution Committee is revising our present constitution. Clara McZeek, chairman. 6. Better English Committee encourages better speech and writing. Jesse Woods and Natalie Ann Jackson, chairmen. Lydia Aiken (extreme left) is installed as State Parliamentarian for the year 1955-56 by Charles King, State President for 1954-55. Sponsors of the Williston Student Council (left to right: Mrs. Grady, Mrs. King, Mr. Lowe, Mr. Washington, Mrs. Williams 7. Code of Ethics Committee prepares a code of ethics for our school to improve the morale of the student body. Arthalia Bordeaux, Chairman. 8. Elections Committee plans and controls the elections sponsored by the Student Council. Eddrena Thomp¬ son, chairman. 9. Music Committee selects the music to be played during recess. Frances Baldwin, Chairman. 10. Social Committee plans social activities. At present it is planning an Inaugural Ball to be given follow¬ ing the installation of the new officers in April. Some of these committees have completed their assignments, but others will continue to function throughout the year. Especially are we grateful to the Code of Ethics Committee for formulating a Code of Ethics which was accepted by the school and the Activity Room Committee, which so beautifully decorated the Christmas tree in the lobby and decorated the Activity Room. The annual meeting of the State Association of Student Councils held at Williston in 1954 elected Charles King as State President. We sent him to Ardmore, Pennsylvania in June of 1955 to attend the Nation¬ al Convention of Student Councils. On November 17, 1955 he gave the student body a report which included a film of the convention highlights. The Fifth Annual Convention of the North Carolina Association of Student Councils was held at West Charlotte Senior High School in December, 1955. Charles King presided efficiently and his introduction of Dr. Benjamin Mays, the guest speaker, was superb. Lydia Aiken, Natalie Jackson, James Sterling, Earl Cheek, and Charles King accompanied by Mrs. M. D. Grady, a member of the State Executive Committee, and Mr. Harris went to Charlotte as delegates from our Council. Lydia Aiken was elected State Parliamentarian. The Council is a means of inspiring our Students and fostering unity among them. We know that our student body will elect officers and representatives in the coming elections, who will continue to broaden the functions and improve the work of the Student Council in its efforts to keep Williston the greatest school under the sun.
