1955 X T ILLISTC) NIA N Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean, -- tears from the depths of some divine despair rise in the heart, and gather in the eyes, in looking on the happy autumn fields and thinking of days that are no more. - Alfred Lord Tennyson - Every member of the graduating class has a feeling of melancholy as he reflects over the twelve years that have flown so quickly by. In thinking of these days, tears from the depths of some despair rise in the heart, and gather in the eyes. This quotation by Alfred Lord Tennyson expresses our innermost feeling as we reminisce over days that are no more. Judith Lavina Owens mM-% aV5 v -r : wS jv ' : MM- ' « .r- ■ ?-■■• ' S ' - ' y%? lx PX:. r ifewf?- , £y 5 ; • iwxrm ' Wmxr r For her most dutiful service through the years, for her patience, wisdom and guidance, the class of 1955 wishes to dedicate this book to MRS. CATHERINE H. ROBINSON Mrs. Robinson, an alumna of Williston, has spent her twenty-two years of teaching at Williston, where she teaches speech, dramatics, and English. She also sponsors the Thespians, a dramatic Organization. Born in Alabama, Mrs. Robinson received her Bachelor ' s Degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. and has done graduate work at Columbia University in New York City and at A and T College in Greensboro, N.C. NEW HANOVER COUNTY Williston Senior High School is recognized through¬ out the Nation and even in foreign countries as one of the out¬ standing secondary schools of our State. Visitors from other nations as well as our own have made special trips to make a study of its program and facilities. Very few schools offer as wide a course of study as Williston. The universal com¬ ments on the organization, conduct and spirit of the pupils, have been most favorable. Graduates entering the business world are increasing year by year and proving highly suc¬ cessful to their employers. As the days go by, the increased contribution this High School is making towards the develop¬ ment of New Hanover County and the State of North Carolina, is realized more and more. You are to be congratulated upon another splendid year ' s work. H. M. Roland Superintendent of Schools Mr. H. M. ROLAND, Superintendent Mr. J. W. GRISE, Ass ' t. Supt. May I offer you, the graduating class of 1955, my sin¬ cere congratulations. You are graduating in an era of great opportunities for service to your state and Nation. It is an era of change, of uncertainties, and of a clash of ideologies among the peoples of the world. It is a period in the history of our nation which calls for people with cool heads andwarm hearts, with clear constructive thinking and moderation of action. I feel that the training you have had under the faculty of your school has prepared you to meet these problems and become a useful citizen of the greatest nation in the world. May you so work and so act in the , years ahead that you will always, and at all times reflect credit upon your Alma Mater -- Wil¬ liston Senior High. J. W. Grise BOARD OF EDUCATION J. C. Birmingham Business Manager It affords me much pleasure to congratulate you, the class of 1955, for making possible the 1955 volume of the Willistonian. There can be no doubt that the contacts and experiences that you have had in bringing this volume to completion have been worthwhile, and that the time and effort spent in its production will always be cherished by you as the happiest moments of your high school career. May I wish all the members of the class of 1955 the highest degree of success possible, and may all of you strive to give the best that you have back to your community and country in service and devotion. Work is never work when you are really in earnest, when you truly, honestly, sincerely are in sympathy with what you are doing, I have enjoyed working with the sponsors and students of the class of ' 55 in putting this edition of the Willistonian to bed . Now that the work is finished, may you treasure this book. May you preserve it as a memento of your years -- yes, the happy, pleasant, years that you spent as a high school student. May it constantly remind you of your classmates and teachers. May it inspire you to continue to strive to reach those goals that represent a useful, profitable, and happy life. J, H. We cherish thy name and thy precepts too; All our loyalty we give, Dear School, to you. CHORUS Our voices we raise in a song of thy praise The greatest school under the sun. We ' ll ever adore Alma Mater Dear, Ever lift our praise to you, Dear Williston If ever we falter or if we ever fail, From thee we new courage shall gain; Thy standards uphold when ordeals assail; For we love and honor Williston ' s dear name. Class Mist oru It all began on a sunny day early in the September of 1952. Hesitantly, but nonetheless energetic¬ ally, we, the graduating class of 1955, entered into our high school careers. A careful observer may have noted many different feelings among the members of the class that day. Probably there would have regis¬ tered with him, expressions of fear (possibly these were more prevalent), tension, helplessness, and, he may have noted a few bold pretenders. Somehow we managed to scramble through the preliminaries and as¬ semble in our various homerooms. Before too much time had elapsed, we had oriented ourselves and settled down to business. About this time, different activities were getting started, and we entered into them with vim. Quite a bit of latent talent was discovered. Many of us joined the Glee Club, and some who were not already in the band, joined it. Further talent was displayed when we had our Sophomore Variety Show, with Judith Owens as Mistress of Ceremonies. We were particularly sad when Mrs. Lofton, our beloved chemistry teacher, was stricken and had to leave school. We never knew how much we appreciated her until she was no longer with us. Some few of us, after having demonstrated our ability as typists, rated a trip to North Carolina Col - lege in Durham to compete in a typing contest held there. The lucky ones were Helen Rogers, Judith Owens, Barbara Robbins, and Betsy Campbell. Possibly the highlight of our social activities in our Sophomore year was the Sophomore Ball, held in April. The idea of such a ball was first instituted by Helena Henry, then a member of Mrs. Burnett ' s 10-6 Class. With the cooperation of the whole class and the Sophomore teachers, the first Sophomore Ball was a huge success. As the years passed, it has become almost a tradition here at Williston. The school year was fast nearing its end, and we could hardly concentrate on our algebra and English because of much contemplation of the Junior Year and the many activities which go along with it. We left for the summer. We rejoiced at the re-opening of school for we were anticipating many happy events. We chose the following officers to guide our destinies as Juniors: President, Sherman Epps; Vice President, Robert Sparks; Secretary, Geraldine Floyd; Assistant Secretary, Barbara Robbins; Chaplain, Delores Galloway;; and Reporter, Judy Freeman. Some of our girls thought that their pulchritudinous figures would permit them to be majorettes in the band. These winsome juniors were: Joan Canty, Helen Rogers, Juanita Johnson, and Barbara Baldwin. The class of 1955 showed itself to be outstanding not only in beauty but also in scholarship, for George Cleamons, one of our classmates, scored so high on the Inter-Collegiate Cooperative Scholarship Examination that he was admitted to Fisk University as a college freshman at the end of his junior year in high school. We, as Juniors, were proud to be the first to have the Junior-Senior prom in our new Gymnasium. It was the prettiest prom 1 ' that the faculty and students of Williston had ever witnessed. At least, we thought so. The gym was decorated like a boat on cruise to Hawaii. As you entered the door, you came on deck, and you went in the gym where you were entranced by the soft, sweet music that was being played by Jesse Shaw ' s band with Mr. Carter Newsome as soloist. We returned f or the school year anxious to launch ourselves into our senior activities. Some of us were a little upset to realize that our schedules were changed. In some cases physics had been added, and in others, geometry. In either case the reaction was the same . . . We dreaded it. Class Mist ory (CONTINUED) Sherman Epps was unanimously re-elected to the presidency, with David Nixon - Vice President, Geraldine Floyd - Secretary, Anne Austin - Treasurer, Annie Andrews - Parlimentarian, and Robert Aikens - Chaplain. We were happy to add to our Senior list, two new students, Nellie Phelps, and Josie Davis. One of the many spectacular events this year was executed by the football squad. They won the first football game of the season from Raleigh, by the score of 14-6. The team, we feel, was spurred to victory by the senior squad members: William (Dontie) Moore, Leander (Chico) Batts, Albert (Brokie) Saunders, Robert (Frame) Robbins, Stanish (Jerry Lewis) Polite, Sherman (Chuck) Epps, and Russell (Mr. Football) Martin. An activity that most of us Seniors had anticipated since our Junior year was Senior Day at A T College in Greensboro. An unprecedented number boarded three Queen City Trailway buses at approximately 5 o ' clock on the morning of October 16, 1954. It was with relief that we started the trip, since on the pre¬ ceding Thursday night, the hurricane of all hurricanes, Hazel ' ' , had raged, and we were uncertain as to whether or not we would go. At last, however, we got started, and all who went enjoyed themselves tre¬ mendously. We were very happy to see George Halsey, Roosevelt Gregg, James Bannister, James Moore, Wil¬ liam Sidberry, and Roland Sneed of last year ' s class on the college campus. Incidentally, Gregg was chosen president of the Freshman class of more than a thousand students. At its 1953-54 meeting the North Carolina Association of Student Councils chose our school as host to the December 2-3, 1954 meeting. We, as Seniors were very proud of the exceedingly large number that was present. Not only this, but we were proud of our fine school, and of the willingness to work demon¬ strated by our students and teachers. We must send special congratulations to Mrs. Burnett, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. King, Mr. Robinson, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Lowe, Mrs. Green, Mr. Harris, and to Mrs. Grady, who all worked diligently to make the Convention a success. There were among us, students who worked right along with the teachers. The Seniors among those were Heldna Henry, Anne Austin, Joan Canty, Delores Faison, Barbara Robbins, Judith Owens, Greeba Murrill, Deother Melvin, Lawrence Ennett, Judy Freeman, Zenobia Newton, Walter Gause, Robert Sparks, and Walter McAllister. In spite of all the work that went along with the Convention, we were happy to be able to do it, and happy, too, that one of our own, Charles T. King, won the State Presidency. As we look forward to graduation and all of the activities which go along with it, we sincerely wish to thank each of the teachers who has shown his willingness to contend with us. We know that at times we did not deserve such patience and attention, and are deeply indebted to them for it. Anne Austin and Joan Canty The Junior of 1954 who became a College Freshman in 1955. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and seal hereto this twenty-seventh day of May, year of Our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Five. THE CLASS OF ' 55 by Margaret Riley AN ASSEMBLY PROGRAM Class Prophecy The day was June 9, 1965, and I had been thinking all day of my classmates who with me had marched into the Williston Gymnasium to the strains of the War March of the Priest, and had received their diplo¬ mas from the hands of Superintendent Roland and Mr. B. T. Washington. Returning to my apartment from the office of my employer at 4 o ' clock on that day, I heard my tele¬ phone jangling. Reluctantly I answered, for I was very tired. But my spirits rose when I recognized the voice of Judith Owens. She was calling me from her little Dress Salon. She said that she was going to Paris to the openings of the famous Parisian Dress Salons. Can you arrange to go with me? she asked. Of course I could arrange it, for my vacation time was near. One week later, we left Wilmington by pullman and set out on the first leg of our trip. En route to Washington we purchased the Washington News from the news butcher and Judith, being interested in fashions, saw at once the big page advertisement of Catherine Yoeman ' s fashion show. Catherine at that time was a dress designer in Washington and catered to the First Lady and the chic wives of the foreign diplomats. Continuing to scan through the paper we noticed that the society page pictured two familiar faces. We recognized Barbara Robbins and Helena Henry who were quite outstanding in our graduating class. Barbara and Helena were recent brides of Marvin Johnson and Robert James respectively, and were now residing in Washington, D. C. Knowing now that some of our dearest and oldest friends were in Washington, we decided to stop there and look them up. From the advertisement in the paper we learned that Catherine ' s fashion Salon was in the center of the town. Hiring a cab to take us there, we found Catherine, exquisitely groomed, supervising her cutters and the girls at the machines. Among her cutters we recognized Delores Gallo¬ way, Margaret Hargrove, and Louise Riley. Among the girls at the machines we recognized Oliver Gen- wright, Juanita Fennell, and Annie Andrews. Catherine was so overjoyed to see us that she closed her shop for the rest of the day to entertain us. While driving us over to the Duplex Apartments where Helena and Barbara lived, she told us that three of her outstanding models were Barbara Baldwin, Judy Freeman, and Carey Henry. Reaching the apartments, we found Helena and Barbara preparing for a cocktail party. We were invited and were quite surprised to meet more of our classmates at the party. The former Betsy Campbell, now the wife of George Johnson, merchant seaman, entered with her characteristic dignified way. Some of the other classmates we saw were: Leander Batts, Fred Bracy, Aaron Canty, Helen Rogers, and Zenobia Newton. They were all working in government offices in Washington. After the party we departed for our next destination which was New York. We had to hurry because Judith had to sail for Paris, France on the Normandy the next day. About 12:10 A.M. the next day we boarded the Normandy. When we entered our state-rooms, we found them filled with bon voyage gifts. There were red roses from singer Lawrence Ennett and civil engi¬ neer, Ward Monroe, two dozen white carnations from the Reverend Bunyan Mills, and candy and books from Mattie Herring, Wilhelmenia House and Ida McDuffie, secretaries in Wall Street brokerage houses. Cath¬ erine had wired them that we were in New York and were sailing for Paris. After being comfortably settled, we bagan to chatter so intently that ' we didn ' t notice that the hostess was trying to get our attention. When we did look, we were surprised to see that the hostess was Daisy James, a former classmate. She told us that she was glad we were on her ship and she was sure we would be comfortable. Class Prophecy (CONTINUED) Chatting with Daisy, we found that she had met many of our classmates during her previous cross¬ ings. She told us that Edward Hill now owned a honeymoon hotel in Bermuda and that he said that Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fulton, the former Miss Delores Johnson and Mrs. Robbins, the former Anne Austin, had spent their honeymoons in his hotel. After a few days we landed in Bordeaux . Seeing that we would be there at least 12 hours, we de¬ cided to galivant a while. Daisy, who had disembarked with us, told us of a fabulous night club at which we might find some interesting information and some delicious food. Arriving at the nightclub we found out that it was managed by two of our classmates, Charles Goss and Kenneth Waddell. Glancing over the dining room we recognized Kay Francis Boyd, and wasted no time motioning to her to join us at our table. While talking with her we found out that some of the featured stars of the night club were Marguerite Marshall, William Jones, Alfred McDonald, and Claritha Anderson. After seeing the floor show and eating our dinner we decided to go to a movie before we started our journey again. Taking a cab, we were surprised to discover that the cab driver was Clarence Tobias and that he owned a fleet of cabs. We arrived at the movie just in time for the main feature. Sitting across the aisle from us was James Vincent looking very French in his red beret and his casual walking clothes. We were about to say something to him but at that moment the lights went out and the movie began. That movie, we discovered, was directed by James Lofton and William Payne. Starring in it was the dramatic actress, Geraldine Floyd. When the movie was over, we found that we had only a few minutes to board our train for Paris. Being comfortably settled on the train, we turned on the portable radio that we brought along with us. We were not listening to the radio but our interest was aroused when we heard the announcement that Willie Thompson, a former Willistonian, was giving a concert that following week in Bordeaux. Since we were tired, we soon fell asleep and when we awoke, we were in Paris. As I wasn ' t connected with the fashion show Judith was attending, I decided to explore the city while she was at the show. Parting from Judith, I went to a sidewalk cafe. After ordering my dinner I glanced around me and saw a face that seemed very familiar. I stared at it so that the man to whom it belonged came over and spoke to me. I found out that it was Robert Aikens. He told me that after being discharged from the Army, he decided to make his home in Paris. Since I didn ' t have a guide on my tour of the city, Robert consented to escort me. I didn ' t know anything about Paris; therefore Robert chose all the places that we would visit. We visited the Notre Dame in Paris and while looking at the interior of the Cathedral, we recognized Joletha Session, a former classmate, sightseeing too. Leaving the Cathedral, Robert was chattering so about the Monte Carlo on the Riviera that I be¬ came very interested and after a great deal of debating we decided to take a train there since I had the week-end to tour. While there, we met Sherman Epps, who, having won four million dollars, had built himself a flourishing tourist business. I also saw Charles Hargett, James Bostic, Charles Best, and William Streets trying their luck at the wheels. On Saturday we took a boat to the Isle of Capri. There we found many tourist businesses owned by former Willistonians. When we were going to our hotel I recognized Kenneth Henry pushing a baby carr¬ iage. Robert told me that Kenneth was happily married and that the baby in the carriage was the youngest of his family. Continued Class Prophecy (CONTINUED) I glanced at my watch and saw that it was near the time to leave as I was supposed to meet Judith back in Paris. Frantically we boarded a plane for Paris. I was very relieved when I saw Judith passing the time with a friend. As we came up to them, I recognized the friend to be Robert Sparks, who was now a Sev¬ enth Day Adventist Pastor in Paris. Saying goodbye to Sparks and thanking Aikens for showing me the wonderful sights, we departed. On our way to the hotel Judith told me about all of our classmates that she met. She told me that Mrs. Elmore Rogers, the former Margaret Watson, now operated an outstanding dancing school across the street from the fashion salon. She saw at a famous Parisian school the children of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Moore, Mr. and Mrs. David Nixon, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert McGraw. At the showing she saw Dorothy Jones, Mary Williams, Hazel Woods, and Leola McKoy; all were looking for new clothes. After picking up our bags from the hotel we hired a cab to take us to the station so we could start our journey back to the states. We wanted to stay longer but since Judith came on business she had to get back as soon as possible. Being comfortably settled on the train, for Bordeaux, Judith and I were very silent, but I know we were both thinking the same thoughts. The Willistonians of 1955 were in various parts of the world and all were prosperous and happy. Daisy Vereen and Judith Owens. ■ ' SgSE ' Or. Through such careful planning and with the aid of the faculty and student body of Williston, we were able to hold one of the largest and best conventions ever in the history of the school. The discussion groups and problem clinics, in which the pupils discussed their peculiar problems, proved to be very helpful and interesting to the delegates. To implant the memory of this Four th Annual Convention of the State Student Councils deeper in the minds of everyone present, the Convention ended with a tour of our beautiful and historic city, Wilmington. Not only was this one of the best Conventions ever, but it was also inspirational, educational, and enjoyable. MR. JACKIE ROBINSON OF THE BROOKLYN DODGERS ADDRESSES DELEGATES AND VISITING FRIENDS Also on Front Stage, left to right: Mr. B.T. Washington, Principal, Williston Senior High, Mr. H. M. Roland, Supt. of New Hanover County Schools; and Mr. J. R. Benson, City Manager. HERE AND THERE AT THE STATE CONVENTION DELEGATES IN SESSION INSTALLATION OF NEW OFFICERS STUDENT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REFRESHMENTS SERVED The Senior Class of 1955 congratulates Charles King for having been elected as President of the State Association of Student Councils for 1955-56. THE WILLISTON BAND The Williston Senior High School Band was quite active this year. At the foot¬ ball games, as usual the band furnished the music and helped the cheerleaders back the team. Though green at the beginning of the year the band came through with a few half time shows for entertainment. The band under the leadership of Robert J. Floyd showed off in two parades with peppy marches and fancy steps. These parades were the Community Chest and Christmas Parade. In the Christmas Parade the band wore on their hats lights which were of dif¬ ferent Christmas colors. On the occasion the Band did a few formations and played a new march that quickly became the hit of the parade. As for concerts the Band furnished the music at the annual P.T. A. Christmas Program and participated in the annual E. N. C. Student Council Association which was held in Wilmington. For the Student Council the band gave a half hour concert program including a trumpet duet The Holy City” by Irvin Brown and David Nixon. For the P. T. A. the band and Glee Club gave a combined program. The most touch¬ ing scene was the Nativity with the band playing carols. The buying of a megaphone was a main project for the Band this Year. By selling candy and other refreshments at the games and by giving a Halloween party, they were able to do so successfully. David Nixon ON PARADE HIGH STEPPERS ■3 l ri •?- ' . 5 ■•V ' ?. - ' . He stressed scholarship, sportsmanship, and ability. it v ■«. ‘ uel Bowens, son. They began the task of conditioning. His running attack was spearheaded by Rogers and Rhames, the touchdown twins. Wilmington, Sept. 24. - The Tigers, in a very close game, lost to the Adkins High School to the score of twelve to six. Wilmington, October 8. - After dropping two consecutive games, the Tigers en¬ tered the home park fighting mad, determined not to lose another. It was a game to be remembered by Wilmington fans. The tireless defense of the Tigers held the New Bern Warriors to a scoreless tie. Wilson, Oct. 15. - Confident over the last week ' s tie with the Eastern Cham¬ pions of last year, the Tigers of Williston met the Wilson team, which had defeated them last year. Although the field was wet and sloppy, the fused spirit of the Tigers was not to be fizzled. Quarterback Bowens sent Rhames on a pitchoutfor nineteen yards to score untouched. The conversion attempt by Bowens was blocked. A second T.D. was later scored by Rhames in the last quarter on a line buck, and the conversion by Bowens clinched the victory. At the gun the Tigers were on the Wilson 30 yd. line, af¬ ter a completed pass to Polite from Bowens. Durham, October 22. - A daring display of broken field running by the safety man of Durham netted a 95 yard touchdown, and shook the Tigers to reality. From then on, they out-played, out-thought, and out-maneuvered the Durham Bulldogs. They lost in the final moments, however, when a Durham back scampered across the goal line. With this T.D. Durham took the lead and won by a score of 19-12.
