Text from Pages 1 - 116 of the 1954 volume:

I f t, I ! I -• . 1 c • u ■■ I ■ i i ' I I I - « i- .1 1 WILLISTONIAN foreword It is an amazing and wonderful truth that, whatever their sta¬ tion in life may be, Willistonians never forget the days they spent at their dear Alma Mater. The prime reason for the publication of this book is to keep green the memories of the days spent at dear Williston, memories of our scholastic accomplishments, memories of the friends we ' ve made, memories of the clubs of which we were members, and memories of many other activities in which we participated. We, the members of the Annual Staff, sincerely hope that this book will serve its purpose in every way possible. K Richard Irving “Dedicatm To Mr. James H. Harris, the class of 1954 fondly dedicates this volume of the Willistonian in appreciation of his valuable assistance and guidance in the preparation of this book. To him we are sincerely grateful. Mr. Harris, a native Wilmingtonian, graduated from W i 11 i s ton as Valedictorian of the class of 1925. Finishing his college work at Hampton Institute, he joined the faculty of Snowhill Institute, Snowhill, Alabama. There he taught science and mathematics. Later he served as principal of Fessenden Academy, Martin, Fla., where he found time to take part in many civic activities. Mr. Harris came to Williston as a teacher of mathematics and Phy- sics in 1950 and now serves as Assistant Principal and as chief adviser to the sttiff of the Willistonian. Mministration My heartiest greetings to the 1954 Seniors of Williston Senior High School, You are honored with being the first class to graduate from the new Senior High School building. You are doing a good job of setting up higji standards of conduct and scholarship as a begiiming of the development of a great in¬ stitution . Even the organization as a senior hi school is in its first year as separate from the junior high school. The customs and esprit de corps you create this year will be a major influence on the future development of the high school, May your future days reflect the training your teachers have given you in that you may render maximum service to your country and your fellow citizens. Within its pages are evidence of time and labor given by the staff to bring this volume to completion. We wish to congratulate you further because you are the first class to have the honor of graduating from our new Senior High School. We believe that these honors will stand out as beacons in your life as you leave your Alma Mater. We hope for you a future full of success and that you will always be proud of the fact that you completed your high school education at our beloved school. Sincerely yours, B.T. Washington, Principal James H. Harris, Jr. Assistant Principal Satisfaction comes with the knowledge of a job well done. You, the mem¬ bers of the Class of 1953-54 have a justifiable right to be proud of your publication. The 1954 Willistonian. Howie IN MEMORIUM In the memory of Catherine Jones, who departed from her classmates on October 19, 1953, to answer the call of God. Catherine, who became our classmate only five years ago, was liked by all and admired for her diligence. As a loyal Willistonian, she spent the last few moments of her life work¬ ing in the interest of her school. Knowing her was one of the pleasant experiences of our school life. Although we cannot see her now, we feel that she is not far away. Alas for him who never sees The stars shine through his cypress-treesi Who, hopeless, lays his dead away. We pledge ourselves to further all your high ideals Dear Williston, Dear Williston, we hate to part. Waiting for Lunch on Senior Day THE GREENSBORO TRIP Saturday, October 3, just before dawn, a group of 64 sleepy seniors assembled at the front of Williston Senior High School to take the trip to Greensboro. Following the arrival of our chaperones, Mr. J. H. Harris and Mrs. L. S. Williams, were two Queen City Trailways. We piled on the buses and seated ourselves according to the roll call. Around 4:45, with everyone in place, we started on our journey. Continuously riding, we saw many thrilling and interesting sights which we had never seen before. Just as we were beginning to enjoy the scenery, we arrived at Fayetteville where we rested. While there, several of us took pictures with our cameras. The trip from Fayetteville to Greensboro was short and exciting, but about 15 minutes of eleven all the girls began making-up and rearranging their hair. We knew then that we would soon arrive at our destination. At eleven o ' clock the buses rolled on the campus of A and T College. Every¬ one rushed to the windows of the buses looking for familiar faces of former Williston graduates. Bernard Wade, Edward Faulk, Major Newkirk, Jean Rogers and the Scar¬ borough sisters were probably the most homesick, for they could hardly wait for the buses to stop. Edward Faulk, a 1952 graduate ably directed us on a most interesting tour of the campus. There were over 5,000 students attending the Senior Day activities from schools some of us had never even heard of before. Therefore, it was necessary that we try as nearly as possible to stay together. Mrs. Williams gave a pass to each student, in order that he might be able to see the football game between The Union Panthers and the A and T Aggies, which was to be played immediately after the concert given by the crack A and T band on the steps of Hallmark Hall. All of us were very proud, for Rudolph Howie, one of our 1953 graduates, played and led a solo in the well known A and T Band. After the game, we were served in the campus dining hall. Everyone ate heart¬ ily because, by then we were quite ready for this meal. Everyone was asked to report to the bus at 6:00, so that we might arrive home before too late. We had lived one day in the largest College for Negroes in America. Carolyn Owens, Lucille Spicer and Armie Ruth Crowder A. T. SENIOR DAY SCENES Some of the other students who also enjoyed Senior Day and saw the Football Game. ' Mr-t Edward Faulk, Class ' 52, now a student at A and T College acted as guide for the Williston Group. On the Bus Class Mist ory It was a very warm day in September, when approximately two hundred fifty fledgling freshmen assembled in the Williston Hig School to await the assignment to various class-rooms. With trepidation, we sat wondering where we would be sent and who our teachers would be. The wait was not long. Soon, a hush fell upon the auditorium and one by one the teachers arose and read the names of pupils who had been assigned them. Some of us were sad because our names were not called with our former classmates and we knew we would be separated. Mr. Rogers, who is now Supervisor of Negro Schools, was our principal then. He gave us some instructions about our new classes and acquainted us with some of the rules of the school. We then passed on to our class-rooms. After school had been in session a few weeks and we had become acclimated, certain ones of the green freshmen began to attract notice be¬ cause of abilities. It was discovered that Leroy McQueen, Shirley Bland, Eleanor Artis, Arthur Stokes, Paul Stokes, and Carolyn Owens were musically inclined and they joined the Glee Club. The band was improved by the addition of about ten new members excluding the other twelve, now fresh¬ men, who joined in the eighth grade. The athletes among us were George Mack, George Locke, William McDonald, John Taylor, and Kenneth Dickey. When the time came for Home-Coming festivities, the freshmen class entered a float that attracted the attention of all who saw the par¬ ade. The year rolled on, final examinations came, and we left for a summer ' s vacation. The next September, those of us who had the courage and fortitude to keep up, entered school with our heads held high and pride in each step as we called ourselves Sophomores. We were greeted by a new principal, Mr. B. T. Washington, who came to us from Williston Primary School, which is now Gregory School. In this year Sarah Mitchell, Leroy McQueen, and Fannie Gary joined the Dramatics Club. It so happened that Fannie Gary and Leroy McQueen had roles in a play Unsuspected Fruit . Mrs. O. B. Ramos organized a dance group in which Alvenia Wright and Leroy McQueen were enthusiastic members. About six more of this group decided to join their musical friends and became members of the band. Among these were Delores Fennell and Laurastine Graham. The members of the sophomore class were just as co-operative as when they were fresh¬ men. Accordingly, when it was time for Home-Coming celebration they worked together and en¬ tered another beautiful float. The Year came to a close, and, mush wiser and certainly more dignified in manners, we looked forward to our Junior Year. We welcomed the re-opening of school, for we were anticipating many exciting events. Early in the year we met and organized ourselves as the Junior Boosters Club having as our pur¬ pose, To boost the morale of our school, to work for all of its activities and particularly to help secure band uniforms. It was indeed fitting that we should do this since a large number of the band members were members of our class. To guide our destinies as Juniors we chose the following officers: President, Roosevelt Gregg; Secretary, Estelle Taylor; Treasurer, Leroy McQueen; and Chaplain, Roamless Hudson. We shall not soon forget the Home-Coming Parade of this year because our float on which we had worked so diligently, stopped on the corner of Front and Dock Streets. All our efforts to start it again were fruitless. The other floats passed us by and left a group of sad disappointed Juniors on the comer, unable to finish the parade. (continued) Class Mist ory (CONTINUED) Richard Irving and Thelma Grady decided they would join the band to develop their musical talent along with Lottie Dry, who thought that her pulchritudinous form made her just rig t for a majorette. Every Junior looks forward to being tapped for membership In the honor society, the Crown and Scepter Club. To us, it was an exceptional honor, for twenty-eight Juniors became members of the Crown and Scepter Club. The Junior-Senior Prom, the highlight of all Junior activities, was held May 15th. The theme was An Evening in Paris . A dark blue sky studded with silver stars and a crescent moon, formed the canopy under which were arranged tables and chairs, reminiscent of the Side Walk Cafes in Gay Paree. This event was a gala affair and will long be remembered. We Juniors looked forward to following Williston ' s Tradition of holding wands bedecked with the Senior ' s colors, to form an arch, under which the graduates would pass in procession. When Commencement night came, we preceded the Seniors and held the wands as usually done by Juniors. This thought came to us, We Juniors of 1953 will pass as graduates under a similar arch in 1954. Again school closed and the summer passed. This year, Mr. Washington greeted us in a new school. Again we came in, organized ourselves and went to work as students should do in a million dollar school, (estima ted cost of building). At our first Senior meeting, Roosevelt Gregg was unanimously re-elected to guide the destinies of the class with Estelle Taylor as Secretary, Harold Harris, Treasurer, and Chaplin, Keimeth Dickey. Estelle Taylor, as President of the student body, has worked hard to build the morale of the students. The Student Council under her leadership secured towels to be used by the teams during games, has made plans to issue a handbook to help pupils entering school for the first time to orient themselves, and has organized the Monitor System. One Saturday in October, a small group of Seniors with Mrs. Williams and Mr. Harris act¬ ing as chaperones, went to Greensboro for the annual Senior Day held at AandT College. Those who went said they enjoyed themselves immensely. The year goes by with all the Seniors participating in all the school activities; however, Lottie Dry holds the distinction of being the only Senior majorette. Now that we have reached the mid-point of our Senior year, we Seniors, both those who will continue our education and those who will not go any further, pause to thank the many teach¬ ers and principals who have taken the time to help us along the way. We deeply appreciate what they have done for us, for without their assistance, we would have not gone thus far. And now, we turn our attention to the class night, the Senior play, and the graduation ex¬ ercises. We are glad to be the first class to be graduated from the new Williston Senior High School. Class Prophecy It is the year 1964, ten years have passed since I left the Williston Senior High School as a sweet girl graduate. Wondering what became of the almost two-hundred graduates, I purchased a ticket to the Metropolitan Opera House, where Eleanor Artis McDonald as Bess was to sing in the opera Porgy and Bess . Mrs. McDonald, the former Eleanor Artis was my classmate. Enjoying the concert, I glanced across the aisle and saw Mildred Jones. I smiled and made it known to her that I wanted to see her. During intermission we met in the lobby and chatted gayly. I was interested to discover from the conversation that she was a dietitian, employed at the Medical Center, a hospital administered by Harold Harris. The head nurse at this hospital was Eliza Baptist. Among the nurses Mildred remem¬ bered seeing at the hospital Bessie Scott, Eliza Merrick, Evelyn Robinson, Marva Tisdale, and Norma Lowe Capers. Mildred told me also that Julius Capers, a famous automobile racer had had an accident and had been admitted to the Medical Center where he was being nursed by his wife, the former Norma Lowe. At the moment, he was recovering rapidly. After the last curtain closed we went backstage to Eleanor ' s dressing room. Here we saw Wil¬ liam McDonald waiting for his wife. William, better known as Billy, is a professional baseball player, pitching for the New York Yankees. Billy also told us that George Mack another graduate of 54 had become a professional baseball player and was playing left field for the Dodgers. While we were con¬ versing with Billy, his wife was being escorted down the corridor with her private secretary, Ruth Oliver. Eleanor was wearing a beautiful gown that had been designed by Vivian Jenkins. We conversed with Eleanor and soon found out that she had had the opportunity to talk with James Moore while she was in Boston. He was leader of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Some of the other members of the orchestra were James Banister, John Bellamy and Prince Moses. Mildred and I bade Billy and Eleanor good-bye. Mildred and I left the opera house and went into the street. We hailed a Sky-view cab and were on our way to my apartment. Mildred, who had been very talkative even during our school days informed me that this large firm was owned by McKinley Waters. Passing the busy streets, we glanced up at a sign that read: McAllister Brothers Tailoring Shop. The suit that Mildred was wearing was made by the McAllister Brothers. Getting out of the cab, we happened to see postmaster James Boney. During the summer months while working in the post office he had come across mail for Gwendolyn Mosley, Jean Williams, Iris Richardson, Eleanor Bell, Amy Berry, and Thelma Grady, who always come here to summer school each year. They all teach at Parker High School in Birmingham. We entered the apartment, Mildred was delighted to know that 1 was owner of Williams House of Beauty. 1 had as my operators Johanna Greene, Shirley Davis, Elizabeth Adams, and Jessie Bell Perry. Mildred was interested to know who designed the building. I told her that William Lockhart had designed it. I also told her that the products I used were prepared by Charles Evans in his chemistry laboratory. Mildred picked up the NEW YORK TIMES and the headlines read: Helen Coakely, private de¬ tective finds clue to the New Bobby Greenlease Kidnap Case. We turned to the Society Page and saw that Mrs. Barbara Bryant Halsey, now a famous French Model, had been in New York to visit her two children when news came that her ex-husband, George had become seriously ill. She flew back from Paris two days ago to be at his bedside. George and Barbara have been separated for five months. He has become a nationally known band leader. On the sports page we read an article about Jerry Taylor, who has become the world ' s greatest boxing champion. Class Prophecy (CONTINUED) Mildred and I went to El Pesa for dinner. There we met Kenneth Farmer, who is the auto engin¬ eer for General Motors. We also met Louise Young and Arthur Stokes, who are now married. They told us that their little boy Arthur, Jr. was being treated by Pediatrician, Carolyn Owens Gordon. They also said that Shirley Lewis and Lottie Dry, our Psychiatrist, were working on Richard Irvin, whose mental ability seemed to be fading away after being editor-in-chief of the 1954 Willistonian. After dinner, Mildred and 1 departed. It seemed as though our day had been most perfect after ten long years away from Williston Senior High School. We had the opportunity of being the first class graduating from there. Geraldine Williams and Mildred Jones mmm ALMA MATER Down deep in our hearts lies a love so strong and true A love for thee, Dear Williston. ' W ' XvWW FOOTBALL SQUAD 1953-54 FOOTBALL Willistonians will long remember the hardships and the bitter disappointment the foot¬ ball team faced in trying to bring the 1954 Championship to our school. The boys played some very rugged games and were complimented on the splendid sports¬ manship they displayed, but they were not so successful with their opponents as they have been in former years. May the team of 1955 be successful in bringing the championship of the state to our Dear Williston . F. P. ROBINSON and E. A. T. A. IN SESSION STUDENTS OF THE WILMINGTON COLLEGE CENTER THE WILMINGTON COLLEGE CENTER OF THE FAYETTEVILLE STATE TEACHERS C OLLEGE was begun in 1946 primarily for Veterans who desired a college education, but were unable to attend the college at Fayetteville. At that time most colleges were overcrowded. However, such a situation does not now exist. Attendance at the local college has proved that the college serves a definite local need. The enrollment has greatly increased and the staff meets all requirements of the State and the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The curriculum is so constructed as to afford basic courses, similar to, or identical to those offered at almost all institutions of higher learning in the first and second years, or Junior College level. Persons completing these courses receive in total 90 quarter hours credit, which will admit them to Junior Classification at the college or at other institutions. Students, other than veterans, are permitted to attend as long as they meet the pre-requisites to entrance. The recommended normal course load for students is 15 quarter hours per quarter. Twenty hours, or four courses per quarter, may be carried with the special permission of the Director. THE FAYETTEVILLE STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE is accredited Class A by the Sou¬ thern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and by the North Carolina State Board of Education.
