But still our hearts with you will dwell, Our friendship will not die. We thank you, dear old Williston, You paved our way so bright. Although our first battle is won. We ' ve just begun to fight. Written by- Anastacia Jones jCibrary Class Mistor y By Mary F. Greene On one beautiful, sunny morning in September a group of Greenies or Freshmen assembled in Williston Industrial auditorium. It was naturally an exuberant group but this morning the excitement of becoming high school students made them unusually noisy and rude. This group was our class. The excitement did not disturb the Principal, Mr. F. J. Rogers, however. He greeted us with a cheery good-morning and in a very business like manner sent us to the various rooms to which we had been assigned. Promptly we organized our various groups so that we could start on our many plans for making our Freshman year a successful one. We determined to take advantage of every opportunity to develop our talents and, therefore, began in¬ vestigating the various clubs and activities. Roberta Hooper, Dorothy Greene, Doris Greene, Charles Worthy, Benjamin Canty, Pauline Walker, and a few more of our classmates began to display their musical talent by becoming members of the Glee Club, which is nationally known for its melodious music. Flora Newkirk, one of the members who joined during her Freshman year, displayed her musical ability, both vocal and instrumental, so well that she was given the job as an assistant to Mrs. O ' Dell and Mr. Chadwell. Curtis Samuel, Joseph Session, Mack Neil, and Alfred Lawrence became members of our athletic squad. As Freshmen, we sponsored a float in the Homecoming Parade , which was highly praised by the spectators of the city and the school. Twelve months later, we had journeyed to the Sophomore class where we reorganized our various classes so we could continue our career. David Rooks, Benjamin Canty, and Charles Worthy discovered that they had talents of actors so they joined the Dramatic Club . We sponsored a beautiful float in this year ' s Homecoming Parade . It was bedecked with a queen and five sophomores who represented various people who are nationally and internationally known for their performance in their respective fields of entertainment. Seeing that this year ' s work was complete, we prepared ourselves to advance to the next phase of our career. At the beginning of our Junior year we had a change in our Principals. Mr. F. J. Rogers, our former Principal was given the job as supervisor of the Negro schools of New Hanover County. Mr. B. T. Washington, who was principal of Williston Primary School, became our new Principal. Every Sophomore wishes to become a Junior so he can participate in the Junior-Senior Prom and we were no different from the others. As Juniors, we met and organized our class. Marvin Johnson was elected President. Under his capable leadership, we participated in many activities of the school. After election, it was time for Homecoming. As usual we entered a beau¬ tiful float in the parade to help make it a memorable one. Thomas O. Mills, Joyce McDuffie, Doris Davis, Thomas Galloway, Mary E. Harris, Eunice Kirton, Dorothy Durant, Carolyn Boone, Esther Hooper, CLASS HISTORY (Cont ' d. ) Anastacia Jones, Earline Shavers, and Lily King had maintained an average from their Freshman year to their Junior year which made them eligible for membership in the Crown and Scepter Club. Some more of our classmates discovered that they had musical talent too. So they joined the Glee Club and Band. Mary Harris, Betty Dry, Elma Nelson, Dorothy Durant, Carolyn Boone, Annie Adger, Willene McFadden, Ruby Rogers, Jean Rogers, David Rooks, Anastacia Jones, Eugene Davis, Charles Worthy and Herman Dawson joined the Glee Club, while Johnnie B. Vereen, Rudolph Howie, Robert Mack, Robert Flood, Thomas Mills, Robert James, and Benjamin Canty became members of our Band, which is known for its sweet melodies, proces¬ sions and marches. May 2nd was the date of the Junior-Senior Prom. It (the Prom) was beautiful. Marvin Johnson, our class president, received much praise for his excellent supervision of the various committees which helped to make the Prom a gala affair. At Williston there is a tradition that the Juniors who are prospective seniors hold the wands bedecked with the senior class colors. Holding these wands on the night of graduation, the juniors precede the seniors in the procession and make an arch under which the seniors pass. As juniors, we followed that custom. At last we came to the pinnacle of our high school career. With some mis¬ givings we began to look back to determine whether or not the things we had done and the courses we had pursued had prepared us to go forward in realizing our ambitions. Early in the year our class elected Marvin Johnson as president to lead us in our senior activities. Betty Drye was elected secretary, Ernestine Brown, assistant secretary, Doris Davis, treasurer, and David Rooks, chaplain. Not long after the election of class officers we were in the midst of selecting a senior girl to be Miss Williston. Ophelia Maultsby, who was the fortunate senior, reigned as a charming and gracious queen for our Homecoming Parade. Her attendants were Misses Wilhelminia Conyers, Barbara Johnson, and Mar¬ garet McFadden. The senior float was also an attraction of the parade and received high praises. In October a group of seniors attended the annual Senior Day at A. T. College, Greensboro, N. C. They expressed themselves as having an enjoyable time with Mrs. C. H. Robinson and Mr. C. L. Bryant, an alumnus of A. T. College as chaperones for the trip. Some of our classmates of the fairer sex had the pleasure of becoming Debutantes sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha sororoty. Now that we are busy with our class annual, class play, commencement exer¬ cises and class night exercises, we realize that we have completed the first phase of our journey toward our ambition. We are grateful to our teachers for their guidance during the years when we were struggling to reach this point to which we have arrived and wish for them life ' s choisest blessings. Class Prophecy There ' s a trace of spring in the air. Everywhere flowers and trees are waking from their winter sleep. About us things are beginning to take definite form. So are the futures of the Willistonians of the Class of ' 53. This feeling makes a prophet wonder about forth-comingevents. My Crystal Ball becons me to take a peek into the futures of my class mates. A scroll is unrolled, on it is the date 1968. The first scene that comes into view seems to be a great mass of red. Now it ' s clearing up and appears to be an imposing brick structure. Inside this structure I see a hall that ' s lined on each side with doors. On one door there ' s a shingle that reads: Joann Roane - Pediatrician . As I glance inside this room I see a woman seated in the waiting room. She had with her three children, all nearly the same in size. Looking closer I see that this woman is Mable Aiken, now Mrs. Mable Davis and the children are her triplets. Farther down the hall Mindell Drains is opening another door. The shingle on this door reads: T. O. Mills--M. D. Inside the office Doris Davis an elementary teacher at Williston, is waiting to see Dr. Mills. Doris is suffering from a heart ailment because she didn ' t marry George Murrill, a mason. A conversation begins between the two women. Miss Davis remarks that Miss Drain ' s hair is done in an exquisitely becoming style. She is told that beau¬ tician Julia Carmichael, Miss Drain ' s special stylist, is the head of a most ef¬ ficient cosmetic staff. My Crystal Ball suddenly turns and now I see a new housing project where young housewives chat over the back fences. Among these housewives is Mrs. Adolph Richard, the former Miss Betty Dry. Suddenly she notices a car go by and thinks-- Well, if it isn ' t Tommy. Mr. Thomas Galloway is much too intent upon getting through the midday traffic to notice anyone. He is going from lunch back to the Lederle Labora¬ tories in New York where he and Charles Worthy are biochemists. Across the street I see Joyce McDuffie, efficient secretary to successful lawyer, Fred Waddell. As my gaze explores New York with its sky scrapers and thousands of citizens, I glimpse a lone G. I. standing on a corner of Wall Street. This G. I. looks puzzled; he is trying to catch the slightly audible murmur that comes from the people along the crowded street. He listens intently and realizes that all the comment is about the famous Singing Trio, Ruby Rogers, Peggy Genwright, and Roberta Hooper, who are just back from a tour of Europe. The puzzled look changes to a smile because this G. I., Floyd LaBoo, remembers that these now famous girls were once class-mates of his and he knew them when_. The Trio ' s business manager is Louise McIntyre. Back in Washington I see Doctors Marvin Johnson and Charlie Davis pause for a minute of refreshment after a most tedious operation at Freedman ' s Hospital. These doctors were assisted by Nurses Harriet Maultsby, Geraldine Murrill and Thelma Taylor. Across the street Interior Decorator Bessie Monroe is seated in a snug little Beauty Shoppe discussing decoration ideas with beautician Lela Pierce. CLASS PROPHECY (Cont ' d. ) In the window of the adjacent shoppe hang three smart suits, designed and tailored by Wilhelmenia Conyers. In the back of the shoppe is Barbara Johnson, one of America ' s Best Dressed Women , being fitted for a very ch ic wardrobe of dresses, suits, coats, and evening apparel. After a topsy turvy scene, my Crystal Ball now points to the inside of a crowded City Hall where Commercial Educator, Mamie Johnson, is being in¬ troduced by Mayor Abraham McZeek. Miss Johnson is preparing to give a lecture. Now Mayor McZeek, on behalf of all the citizens, is praising Social Worker Doris McCray for her splendid work in the city. The steady tip-tap of a typewriter draws my gaze up to a modest little of¬ fice where secretary Elizabeth Sanders busily types the final reports of her boss, Walter McKoy. A big ado up the street is calling the attention of passers-by. I gaze closely and see, at the altar of a little church Annie Ruth Martin and Willie Addison speak their matrimonial vows before Minister, David Rooks. The continuous rush of jumbled phrases lures my glance to a little office where Eleanor Knox, a patient, lies talking on a couch while Psychiatrist Mary Harris takes notes on what she says. The door to Mary ' s office is slightly ajar and Mary raises her eyes from her work just in time to see accountant, Carolyn Boone and stenographer, Mary Greene go by. Carolyn is mentally picturing her forth-coming wedding to Dr. Marvin Johnson. A few scenes later I get a ringside view of a faculty meeting of Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. Seated at a table are teachers Vera Howell, Ruth Morris, Delores Moore, Charlotte Alston, Curtis Samuel, and Librarian Gerthia Everett. Out on the main highway leading from Greensboro, Electrical Engineer Harold Davis leads a crew of electricians as they prepare to repair a broken power line. In skips, and hops, and jumps across the continent I see here and there Res¬ taurants, owned by Cornell Waddell, a famous chef. A sign in neon on a swank nite club reads: Crooner Johnny Vereen Makes An Appearance; Band Leader Robert Flood and His Trumpeteers Robert Mack, Rudolph Howie, John Thomas and Robert James Will Play While Vocalist Benjamin Canty Sings; Famous Soprano Doris Greene Will Appear on Television. And so on to the West Coast whence we dash off to the Tropic Isle of Honolulu where the celebrated newly weds, the former Miss Pauline Walker and James Murray revel in the beauty of the tropics. Hawaii is a bright and sunny place, says Actress Gloria Simpson. I apply the same adjectives to the futures of the Willistonians of ' 53 that loom so very near. What say, Willistonians, let ' s make this prophetic vision a reality? COMMERCIAL DIETETICS The Williston Echo Staff prepares to publish an issue of the campus pub¬ lication- Ophelia Maultsby Momecoming Jestmties It has been a custom here at Williston, that every year in the midst of our football season, we celebrate our annual homecoming festivities. The enthusiasm of the students and teachers is very high, and we all look with great anticipation toward our homecoming day celebration. The crisp air of the approaching winter tingles the cheeks of the students as they go about their work of putting final touches on their masterpieces commemorating this happy day. Prior to homecoming day, our homecoming queen is selected from among Senior girls chosen by their homerooms to represent them. Election is held throughout the school and the girl so chosen reigns as Queen of Homecoming festivities. She rides a special float in the colorful parade and is the center of attraction. To her, this is a day of happiness never to be forgotten. The other girls who were candidates for the honor serve as attendants and also ride on the float with the queen. All clubs of the school, each section or grade in the school and some organizations of the city sponsor floats, which make a colorful array. The band, with its snappy and expert performers, leads the parade through the downtown and main sections of the city. The excitement runs high. In the evening, our football game is held between our roaring Tigers and a good opponent. During the half-time, the crowning of Miss Williston takes place. Then on with the game. Willistonians feel confident of victory but if we lose, we still feel that we had a good day and everyone leaves in gay spirits. With eager anticipation, we look toward the next year so that we may begin again. By Dorothy M. Durant Cheering Squad Three of the High-Stepping MAJORETTES THE WILLISTON BAND IN ITS NEW UNIFORMS No football game on our own home grounds is complete without the band. Besides performing at the games the band also takes part in community activities, such as, the Christmas Parade and the Azalea Festival in our local community as well as in activities in surrounding communities. The annual concert in the school auditorium is generally anticipated. The band has two main seasons--The March season in which it plays various marches and quick steps, and the Concert season in which it takes up the heavier types of music ranging from classical music to music in the popular vein.
