GRANT LEWIS Senior-Fullback The third year ofcoaching foot- ball at Williston High proved very profitable to Coach Harold Peder- son. Not only did we have a perfect record in Conference games under his guidance during the season. but also the COYOTES gained the co- title as StateChampions with Shan- ley of Fargo. This was a big thrill for various reasons but mainly be- cause three years before we had a season without a win. Soon after gaining the Championship, the As- sociated Press poll declared our Coach Pederson as Coach of the Year. and Garvin Stevens as All- American Guard. Garvin is a senior this year. l-le entered Williston High in his junior year. Both these two years, Garv has been playing varsity basketball and football. Garvin is vice-presi- dent of his class this year and is very active in Wl-lS's various extra- curricular activities. Congratula- tions to both Garvin and Coach Pederson! ! ! ! I The trophy gained by the COY- OTES after the state Championship WARREN NELSON Senior-End DWAYNE HEAD Junior-Center 68 LLOY D MCKENZIE Sophomore-Fullback game was donated by the students ofWilliston High School in memory of their custodian. Chappie Rick- ard. lt is a traveling trophy award- ed to the team or teams winning the East-West championship foot- ball game. Theteam with its name inscribed most times on the trophy within a period of twelve years re- ceives the trophy as a permanent possession. St. lslary's of Bismarck was the first school to hold the travelingtrophy whileWilliston and Shanley are sharing it during 1952 and 1953. The inscription on the trophy reads: The North Dakota State Class A Football Championship award. Presented by Williston High School l. to r. is: Coach Pederson. the trophy, and Garvin Stevens.
