Teachers also showed spiriT by becoming more involved in The i'spiriT of Things, and encouraging many sTudenTs To represenT Their school. The new principal, Fred CoaTes, demonsTraTes spiriT by allowing evenTs To occur. As each year passes, new ideas and renewed spiriT came from sTudenTs who involved Themselves wiTh acTiviTies and bring ouT The beauTy and spiriT of Willis Junior High. The Firebird is an ancienT myThoIogical creaTure. IT was a beauTiful bird of red and orange feaThers. Every 500 years, iT would renew iTself and become more beauTiful Than before. The annual magazine sale fun- draising drive in September pro- vided several opportunities. All students who reached a set goal were entitled to attend a pizza party. The top-selling homeroom got to have an ice cream party. Mrs. Jo Ann Wolf's homeroom stu- dents turned out to be the win- ners. Outstanding spellers from ev- ery English class received recog- nition in the spelling bee. For the second year in a row, 8th grader Patti Sturr was the winner. Students of the month from each grade level are also select- ed every month. Mrs. Donna Col- lins was in charge of the student of the month committee. She said, The students that have won are very fine students and they definitely deserved to be recognized. Another award was the l'm ln- volved sticker. Every week dif- ferent students were chosen by their teachers for making positive contributions to the school. Those chosen got to go to the front of the lunch line and got out of last period five minutes early for the week. At Valentine's time royalty was chosen for the Valentine dance. The activity was a fundraising ac- tivity for the Publications staff. Each penny collected counted as one vote. Winners were: Rena McCullough, queen: Dustin Coombs, king: Jeana Davis, 8th grade prince: Monique Van Horn, 8th grade princess: Jay Vol- quardsen, 8th grade prince: Mon- ique Van l-lorn, 7th grade prin- cess: and Kregg Rogers, 7th grade prince. fl ABOVE: Kelli Ankrom, Karin Boyle, Jennifer Heather Catmull, Mrs. Wolfe and enjoy the Janusz, and Salina Sanders dig in at the ice cream party their homeroom won for magazine sale pizza party. But are they being honest? Whether it is because they like their teachers, they get to see their friends, or they just plain like learning: most students do like something about school. Seventh grader Calloway Har- vey said, I'I like history because Mrs. Martinez is a nice teacher. I also like studying historical events. The teacher has a lot to do with whether or not students like the class. 'lMy favorite class is English be- cause Mrs. Castro is my favorite teacher. I can really talk to her about things, replied 8th grader Diana Escobedo. Biology, said Qth grader Angi Bird, because Mrs. Stelmach- Thomas is nice to us. The work is hard though. Seventh grader Kristi Swisher also prefers history. Mr. Schan- aker is funny. He makes history fun, she said. Having your best friends in your classes really makes it fun. Most students agree with this. Eighth grader Jennifer Jakemer likes P.E. 'lBut only because all of my friends were in that class, she responded. Seventh grader Nick Sublasky likes math because he and his friends can goof off and get away with it. There are some who like classes especially for what they do in that class. Ninth grader Chip Cathcart said, I like shop because you get to make projects. Right: Making Christmas decorations are Oth graders Roger Young and Ivan Car- rera in Spanish class. I like writing so English is my fa- vorite cIass, replied 8th grader Sherri Belko. Seventh grader Gary Bias likes science because he gets to dis- sect and look through micro- scopes. Seventh grader Travis Robinson said, I like cartooning because I like to draw Evan Mecham. Seventh grader Chris Beeman likes shop because he gets to run machinery that he normally would not get to. So you see, school is not really all that bad. Think of the gooc points: friends, teachers, thingsi you like to do. You will realize that school really is more than just reading text books and answer- ing questions about what yoL read. :QB XBOVE: 9Th graders Jake Munoz and Miguel Valencia, 7Th graders Brian Adams and lason Fullmer, and 8Th grader Rudy Espinoza work on Their shop projecT. '-7th-Grade: ' -712 Grade ' 7th Rodeoing Ropes Students' Interest What types of Willis students are cowboys at heart in a city school? Different types are, but what they all have in com- mon is a liking for rodeos. Some of the school's ro- deoers are Qth graders Kendra Wilson, Shelly Kirkwood and Tawny Reidhead, and 7th graders lvlatt Stevens and Bry- an Adams. Some of the awards that can be won at rodeos are belt buckles, money and saddles, the rodeoers said. They all agree that their par- ents support them a lot in their rodeo activities. Kendra ex- plained that her parents pay her traveling expenses, and entry tees and they transport her to and from the rodeos, which are held at locations all over the state. Money is also a factor in car- ing for the horse or horses that the students ride. For some, rodeos are just a hobby or something to do, but not for Tawny. She exclaimed, Rodeos are my life! Jade said she considers rodeoing as a possible future career. There are a lot of different events to keep a rodeoer busy. Bryan, for example, com- petes in calf raping and team raping. Some ofthe other pop- ular events are ribbon roping and barrel racing. These students compete on many weekends. They are very involved and it takes a lot of time, but they know what they like, and what they like is to rope and to ride: even if Wil- lis isn't a country school any- more.
