Freshman Basketball Boys IN ACTION Freshman Cagers Share Championship Led by guard Fred Nixon and postman less Hollins, the 1984-85 Freshman basketball team established themselves by sharing the 21-AAA District Championship with the Cleveland Indians. The early season record was not impressive, but the Freshman Kats closed the year with ten successive sins and a 15-9 season. Impresssive victories over Cleveland, Splendora, Tark- ington, and Dayton highlighted the year. In addition to these games, the Kats played well against large school opponents such as Bryan and Livingston. Aggressive defense and a controlled offensive tempo were the characteristics of this year's Freshmen. lerald lames, Steve Caldwell, and Richard Vela were the defensive players usually alligned to the opposing teams best guards, while Nixon, Hollins, and Kerry Lawrence handled the forwards and postmen. Offensively Nixon and Hollins were team leaders with 24.6 and 16.3 points scored per game. Point guards Steve Caldwell, loe Andrews, and Craig Fowler combined to help a smooth Kat offense. Lawrence and Hollins led the team in re- bounding though Fred Nixon and David Vogel also con- tributed many rebounds. limmy Bowyer and Steve Gatlin were key reserves who played important roles in their team's success. All of the 1984-85 co-champions displayed the desire, dedication and integrity that is necessary to be winners in athletics. Congratulations for this year's accomplishments to the Freshmen.
