They are the peo- ple responsible for creating the yearbook. Every page must be hand drawn. Hundreds of pic- tures are developed, only a few are slected. Sure, it is hard work but when the book is published it is all worthwhile. What does it take to be a DlRECTOR ? It takes a self-starter, a creative mind, and someone who is willing to learn. Do you have these qualities? lf you do maybe you can be a DlRECTOR . Staff Members lnclude: Left to Right: Richard lones, Sandy Seehan, Eric Stapper, Mike McGlothen, Becca Parnell, Angela Piggott Mechelle Cain, Michelle Ozment, Trey Barlow. WHD S BEHIND T If D00 Qin 3 N 1 ' , K II, if Who are the faces behind the doors at Willis High? They are the people who come to school to Iearng but do not fool yourself, learning is not all they do! They like a good pep rally where they can yell their heads off, acting crazy in the hall - then running from Mr. Ready when the tardy bell rings! This does not mean those behind the doors are unresponsible. If you go to Willis, stand up and be counted. Let's leave the door open for all to see and invite all in. x. ,, wg, 3 'jf' f if sgwgk f S F W2 ff 4 gg 1 is K- i jf sf WILLIS IBLDDDEIQS I l5 1 RD wwnsnaf GQ xg g V .. xi t A M 1 a. Each member of F.F.A. has many opportunities to work together and ac- complish their chapters goals. The Iocal show is one event which the entire chapter can become involved. There is always the excitement of the fair. When we get together and help each other get our animals ready for the show, and when the day is over and we look back and see how our teamwork has paid off it seems to be the most enjoyable part of the day. This teamwork creates a bond of unity in our F.F.A. chapter. We are able to share our feelings and ideas which help others. When we help others not only do they benefit but we gain happiness and enjoyment. Many times we have been willing to help our friends and we find they will be eager to show thanks by returning the same favor. This team- work has made our F.F.A. chapter a success. fl 1 fav. jiigflif gi? NAT P RAL 1984 CO-DISTRICT FOOTBALL PLAYER , 'QQ 5 X t. f W if I it f 3 3 X . fi, A Q., ,L , me x . f A ir if Y .Q.:, 4. The early season record was not impressive, but the Freshman Kats closed the year with ten successive sins and a 15-9 season. Impresssive victories over Cleveland, Splendora, Tark- ington, and Dayton highlighted the year. In addition to these games, the Kats played well against large school opponents such as Bryan and Livingston. Aggressive defense and a controlled offensive tempo were the characteristics of this year's Freshmen. lerald lames, Steve Caldwell, and Richard Vela were the defensive players usually alligned to the opposing teams best guards, while Nixon, Hollins, and Kerry Lawrence handled the forwards and postmen. Offensively Nixon and Hollins were team leaders with 24.6 and 16.3 points scored per game. Point guards Steve Caldwell, loe Andrews, and Craig Fowler combined to help a smooth Kat offense. Lawrence and Hollins led the team in re- bounding though Fred Nixon and David Vogel also con- tributed many rebounds. limmy Bowyer and Steve Gatlin were key reserves who played important roles in their team's success. All of the 1984-85 co-champions displayed the desire, dedication and integrity that is necessary to be winners in athletics. Congratulations for this year's accomplishments to the Freshmen. I The Willis Wildkat Baseball Team made it to the state playoffs in 1985. The year began with some big shoes to fill. Gone was Shannon Felder, gone was Gary Pokey Dickerson, Dan Whitesides and john Sonsel. A lot of questions were asked! Who will play here? Who will pitch? These questions were answered quickly by Freeman's Kiddie Corps. Freshmen jesse Hollins and Freddie Nixon took over the pitching chores while the infield of Philip Mosser, Fred Whitesides, Frank Richardson and Thomas Mileski closed the gaps around the baseball diamond. In the outfield Chris Kuhl, Demmis Poff and Michael Trevino caught fly ball after fly ball. The Wildkats won the Cleveland Tourna- ment and posted a ten-four Predistrict Record. The District race was a four team race. The Wildkats of Willis and the Wildcats of Splendora ended the District race with identicaI'eight-two records. The tie caus- ed a playoff which resulted in a Willis Wildkat victory. The Bulldogs of Hitchcock were chewed up by the Kats during the first round of the playoffs with a nine-one score. The Kats' second op- ponent was the Bellville Bramas at Olsen Field on the A8fM campus. The Kats led the first four endings with a score of two-zero. Bellville stayed a five run comeback to beat the Kats with a five-two score. The Willis Wildkat Baseball Team had a great season and we are proud of each and every one of them. l 128 v. ? a-,su ' E www WNW he 3 WW 5 iii? Khin . Stories being written one after the other, asking question after question, reporting and writing it out was also a busy past- time. The format was changed this year from a High school campus paper, to a whole district paper. With much help from the other campuses, we were able to find out what was happening. We recognized the winners of various awards on all the campuses, the principals award, the most outstanding student award, the honor society, and the honor roll. We are also proud to say that we received two awards of merit from the Texas Chapter of the National School Public Relations. On an early September morning in 1936 a young lady walked up to the second floor of the elementary school building in Willis, and entered the auditorium. lust to the right of the stage was a small office with a hand made door. In the office was a desk, a chair and a wooden cabinet. She sat down and looked around the small office and cleaned the desk. Miss Dorothy Cargill was ready to go to work. On August 31, 1984, Miss Dorothy Cargill, after forty-eight years with the Willis Independent School District as Secretary to the Superintendent and much later supervisor of payroll and retirement accounts, she walked out into the world of retirement. The faculty and staff now numbers almost as many as the student body did in the late 1930's. But through it all, Miss Dorothy Cargill kept her desk clean . . . and her work done. Segregation ended . . . a new era began, and Miss Cargill continued to serve. And now, what about retirement? What will you do Miss Dorothy? She replies very honestly, Well, one thing I am going to have to learn to rest . . . it seems that in the past I never had time to learn the rest . . . and I am just going to have to learn to rest . . . and I am just going to have to learn to rest and take life easy. Whether the pride surfaced at a football game or in the classroom, Willis proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is something unique about a school where the students feel like a family instead of a number. Willis has an advantage over other schools because, when Willis wins, the school feels united and each student wants to give their best effort to make sure Willis stays on top. So keep the faith and take an interest in what others have started. Do not let the wall deteriorate because others built it. Someday go look at the trophy rack across from the office and see what trophy you can win for Willis. loin a club and keep your community in mind. It is worth the effort. Remember always that our school song contains the words Wildkats never die. I hope all enjoy this book. With kindest regards, 1984-85 Wildkat editor Trey Barlow ,il rzswbo fir SX up 41 I C9 U 5 2 R7 fb
