QUE ERA ERA It was Tuesday mornmg and I had gotten up early to go for a swtm tn the pooL After the swrm I went to eat breakfast w1th SHIRLEY OBERREITER, who traveled all over the world w1th me We were d1scussmg what we would do that day for entertamment We couldn t dec1de whether to buy a nunk stole or a new sports car Whlle we were dlscussmg the s1tuat1on the mornmg paper came I started readmg the front page and Slurley started readmg the sports page The next thtng I knew Shrrley had me readlng about the Kentucky Derby Then I recoguzed two famJl1ar names WILBUR PAYTON was go1ng to be rxdmg MARY CLARK S famous horse Drtnkerdown m the Kentucky Derby Tlus made us dec1de what we would do We were gotng to Amertca for the Derby! At th1s t1me we were staymg tn Parts We got everythmg packed and went to the a1rport to ge the next plane for the U S As we boarded the plane who should we see but MARILYN CLAYPOOL u1 an a1rp1ane stewardess s umform. We weren t a bn surprxsed to hear that she and DON LEATHERS were marr1ed and were runmng thetr own alrltne Don was gomg to be the p11ot of the plane on whxch we were gomg As we were trymg to get a seat a selhng gtrdles We arr1ved 1n New York and started through customs There stood ALBERT HINDS 1.11 a patr of hand cuffs We found out later that he was caught smugghng tea bags 1nto Boston. The pohcewoman who was takmg h1m lIl was HELEN OCONNOR, We fmally made arrangements on a tram leav1ng for Kentucky We were almost there when along came a person gtvmg all the glrls the eye. We should have known that 1t was RICHARD DAVIS He was st1ll smgle so he could gtve all the gtrls a chance He told us that he was gomg to Kentucky also When we arrxved tn Lousvtlle we dectded we wanted some thtng to eat so we went to a Spaghetu Palace There was MARIE JEROME greeung everyone at the door She told us that she owned the restaurant and PHIL ROCK was her head walter After we flmshedeaung we went to look for a hotel to spend the mght We heard a vo1ce wh1ch we seemed to recogmzed and there to our surprlse was GLENNA WILLIAMS all dressed upm a cowg1rls outftt She saxd she had moved to Texas and marrxed a rtch rancher but they were d1vorced now He was too mterested m the cows Stnce we d1dn t see a hotel anywhere we hatled a cab We got tn and there was EVERETT ALLMON He had a cab that went all over the U S He fmally found us a hotel to spend the mght We went up to the desk to reg1ster and some musrc started playxng. In came BOB CLARK dressed hkea shetk. He 20 9 0 9 9 9 tall man turned around and there stood J' IM J' ONES. He told us he was working his way around the world WHATEVER WILL BE WILL EE even had tus 10 w1ves w1th Lllffl. That sure was a shock to see Bob commg 1n hke that Well, after a good night s sleep the bxg day fmally arrtved and Shxrley and I headed for the track We found ourselves a seat and were lookmg around when we saw GENE CURRY We called h1m over He saxd he could QIVB us a good t1p on the race Of course ll would cost us F520 to f1nd out who was gomg to w1n We could see that he hadn t changed at all. We dectded we would place a bet on Mary s horse We got tn lme belund two women, who kept 100k1Ilg around and at last recogruzed us They were VERNA RHODES and LENORA BOYD, who were marrled now The sa1d that they had told rhe1r husbands they were gomg shoppmg and would be back tn a ltttle wlule, After they had fuushed the bustness at hand we wait up no the wmdow and there stood JEFF ONEAL He was sull a busmess manager We went back to our seats as II was mme for the race to start It was all very excltmg. Drmkerdown won so we went down to the wmners cxrcle to congratulate Mary and Wxlbur J W BURRUS was takmg thetr p1ctures He was workmg for a newspaper Just than FRED WILLOUGHBY came runmng up He was the water boy for the horse. Mary 1nv1ted us to come to her mght club that even1ng to celebrate We were s1tt1ng lookmg at all the lavxsh decoranons and then we saw two people surrounded by ten young men looklng at us They were CATHY REINDERS and BEVERLY TAYLOR. We went over to them and they sa1d that they were runmng a boardmg house for college men Just then two gtrls started s1ng 1ng on the stage They were ROBERTA and EVELYN PATTERSON That was the name they used on the stage too rhey were a bxg h1t all over town we went back to the table and NANCY CHOTT came around passmg out c1rcu1ars about the Democrauc nommee for Pres1dent We wondered why she swnched parues The mght was st111 young so we decxded to go to the T V statlon and see how the contest for Mxss Kentucky was cormng along. We were stttmg there when the wmner was announced It was HELEN PERUGINL She really turned the Judges head We asked Helm xf she knew shere ELSIE SYDNEY and NANCY GREEN were as we hadn t seen them smce graduauon. She saad that Elste had marr1ed a man who ran a space shlp to the moon and Nancy and her husband were helpmg them They couldn t be there because they were away on a scheduled tr1p They wouldn t be back for a couple of years Well, rt was nme to go home, Slurley and Ihad had a wonderful t1me.
