Hickey Wfords cannot express the gratitude we feel for our teachers and all thc other people who have contributed their time and talents so that we, thc class of 1959, might be able to acquire our education. One truly dedicated teacher, after attaining a successful position in industry, studied education intensively so he could work with young people and help them get the best possible training during their high school years. Friendly, cheerful, and witty, this teacher will live in the hearts of everyone who knew him. This teacher encouraged and promoted our retailing program by organizing a school store and helping many students find employment in our area. May this book, written and compiled by many students who respected and loved him, be used as a monument of admiration to the memory of Robert W. Hickey. SE ARCMUCSK-XT DITOVXS . woes emu .VY , C. As basic as the number concept of two or three is to the small child, so is elementary mathematics to the high school student. Here is laid the foundation for plane and solid geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry, and other advanced mathematics courses. Here the thinking processes of our travelers are trained in alertness, preci- sion, and logic. The importance of mathematics in our scientific ap- proach to living today is indubitably supreme. Everyone of our future scientists needs this all-important founda- tion on which to build plans for a greater tomorrow. Extra-curricular activities have been curtailed to some extent, but the most vital organizations have met the situation by operating both before train time and after completion of the day's run. To become an integral part of this system the ninth grade has elected oHicers and provided leadership in the Student Council. As in other years, their section ofthe train has a special trip which covers extra terri- tory for our advanced passengers while slower trips are provided for the passengers who need more time and assistance. Despite a 3-l-3 record, many statements have been made to the effect that this team was the most admirable that the school has ever seen in over 20 years. Proving themselves in the true YVilliamsville Hget up and fight tradition on the field and in gentlemanly manner off it, this group stood out as an asset to both the school and the community. The team's wins were performed against over- whelming odds, as the Billies suffered from many in- juries as well as lack of depth. The gridders began the season with only 27 men and were fortunate that only one, senior Bill Miller, was lost for the season through injury. The football critics had our boys picked as their unanimous choice for last place, like most Billies, we proved them wrong. The team downed its first three league opponents by decisive margins, then went on to tie YVest Seneca in a grueling contest in which the Billies, outmanned 4-l, gave up 13 points in the second half, destroying their 13-0 first half lead. Next, the Billies outplayed league champions Hamburg de- cisively, only to find themselves on the wrong end of a 20-14 score. The team then, having lost many players due to injury, battled rival Cleveland Hill to a 6-6 tie. A Highlights of the season were a 0-0 tie in a non- league contest with Lancaster and a 19-O win over Amherst. The team was unscored on entering the fifth game with the exception of a Huke by Orchard Park. Team standouts were: all-W.N.Y. end, Captain George Mayer, and All-Star quarterback Ernie Boni- stall Cco-captainj and guard Gerry Raczka fnamed by many sports writers the best blocker in E.C.I.C.D. After considering everything, we must say that the Billies had an excellent season. The school may look forward to another winning season next year with three starting linemen: guard Ron Miller, tackle Sid Lovell, and center Bert Ernst, and two starting backs: fullback Tom Clark and half- back Dave Macpherson returning with lettermen Joe and Ted Tulumello and a fine group of other ball players. This year, in the Capable hands of coaches Charles Castelli and Don Averill, our boys came forth with a very commendable performance. Cagemen Capture Crown Referring to this year's basketball season as other than successful would be sheer misrepresentation. Our boys went the entire season with only one defeat and. in one of the most dramatic contests in Wlilliamsville history, took the championship of ECIC Division I. The Billies ran through the first part of the season with all decisive wins, Tri-Captains George Nfayer, Ernie Bonistall, and Dick Banaszak leading the way. A tight race prevailed for first place among ourselves. Cleveland Hill, and arch rival Amherst. Then, with Cleveland Hill defeating Amherst, we beat the former and took the lead. However, about mid-season, we met Amherst on their court and lost a heartbreaker 51-48, tying the three teams for first place. Then Amherst defeated Cleveland Hill and we continued the season with one loss each, right down to the last game, which presented a storybook ending for a sensational season. It was a home game, and the gym was packed. The tickets had been sold out two days in advance, Every- Senior Varsity Basketball-Dick Banaszak, Bill Groves, Mike Egan, Ernie Bonistall, Bill Miller, Bentley Pierce, George Mayer, Fred Bongioyanni. thing, the championship and the rivalry, was riding on this game. The atmosphere was tense as Amherst scored the first goal, the gym was filled with a deaf- ening roar which did not subdue until long after the close of the game. Amherst went ahead early in the Hrst period, and remained there until the last. Banaszalis steady, con- sistent liall handling along with the tremendous re- bounding of Mayer kept us in the game. Then, in the most thrilling moments, high-flying Bonistall hit on three successive drives, drew a few fouls, and it was anyone's ball game. NVith Mayeris scoring and the free throws of Bentley Pierce we went ahead to win 51-49. W'ith one foot in the aud,', the crown was ours! XVith over half our boys graduating, prospects for next year do not seem particularly bright, hut one thing is certain: win or lose, our team will have all of the scrap,, and fight associated with Williamsville sports. At the traditional May Day ceremonies we saw Claudia Reger crowned queen with Beverly McDonald and Susie Prawel attending. Our outstanding social event was the c'Broomstick Bounce, a Halloween dance. Our second year went along smoothly with George Mayer serving as our president again. Our sophomore angels took part in the Christmas pageant, later in the year, seeking an original theme, we held our big dance, the Soda Pop Hop. ln ourjunior year, with Dick Mates taking over presiden- tial duties we began to amass a bank balance by engineering the sale of Billiecals. Darlene Behm and Ernie Bonistall reigned amid the splendid Italian setting of our Junior Prom, Twilight Time. And then last September we were Hnally seniors with George Mayer returning as president and leading our class through its final year which seemed to be the shortest. One of our projects was operating the refreshment stand at foot- ball games where everyone gathered for the warmth and good food. We shall never forget our Roaring Twentiesl' dance nor the fun we had putting on our senior play. The Senior Prom without a doubt was the highlight of the year and Graduation brought to a close four memorable years which will never be forgotten. President 'RGEORGF MARTIN MAYER LITTIE.
