However, there is one teacher in particular to whom we wish to bring recog- nition for the personal interest he took in us as indi- viduals, both in class and in extra-curricular activities. Hardly a day passed that we did not see in him those characteristics which made him so admired by each of us. Many times his cheerful disposition cut the chill of the tense atmosphere as we Worked diligently in class. He was there each time we faltered, indicating the right direction, as We tried to move ahead. This book, representing the best of our hearts and minds and talents that have been expanded and molded by many hands, we wish to dedicate to a man who, we feel, has done a masters work -Mr. Robert Schnirel. They are all busy keeping the tribe in step. Each tribal member is playing his own part, functioning as a minute, yet necessary part of the whole. One group of leaders is helping to lay our plans for each individual in the tribe. Another is watching those who seem to be overcome by the heat. As we move on, we shall meet the other leaders and discover just what it is that they are doing for our tribe. But with a splendid job of coaching by Mr. Schoelles the team soon hit stride. After losing the first meet to Hamburg the team followed up with four straight dual meet victories. Then they closed out the regular season by losing a tight contest to West Seneca. In the big meet of the season the Billies came home as Section VI AA Champions. The leaders who earned their Letters were senior Dave Quinn, Ron LaPorte, jim Koehn, Ron Sherwood, jon Schultz, and Dick Hartman. Showing great defensive and offensive play, they opened the season by dumping Frontier. In the next two games the Billies beat Amherst for the third consecutive year, then conquered Hamburg. Plagued by many injuries and the virus, the Billies were badly hurt. In the XX'est Seneca game the Billies lost the services of star end George Mayer, tackle Ray Voss, and guard Todd Pitts. Next was the Sloan game when Par VC'yatt, Stan Brown, and Dick Benninger were hurt. But as true of all Billies teams they wouldnt give up. Against Orchard Park, seasons champions. our hampered team played one of its best games of the season. After battling the Quakers for three quarters, yard for yard, the crippled Billies were finally overtaken. However, our boys placed well on the All-Star teams. Steve Miles made All-Conference center while halfback Dick Benninger and fullback Stan Brown made the second team. Tom Osinski rounded out the All-Stars by being chosen guard on the Division I team. The highlight of the season CLIITIC when this team. com- posed mainly of freshman boys. defeated Amherst I4-6. However midwa' throu h the season. the team , l was riddled by injuries and afterward encountered tougher going. This year's freshman football team under the coach- ing of Mr. Stearns had a very successful season. The team's only two efforts, both against Nichols, produced overwhelming victories. In these contests the spark plug was Robert Benninger, who electrified spectators with his broken-Held running. This was the first time in many years we'd beaten them in any sport. Another highlight of their season was the day they took the upper hand in a close game against Amherst. Our newly formed Varsity Club swung into action with two dances after the Friday night home basket- ball games. The cheerleaders, who are honorary mem- bers, helped the boys with the dances and co-sponsored one of them. Another accom- plishment Was by Diane Lutgen and Pat Domster, both Whom displayed the league's only two perfect targets. In the Sectionals the Billies finished third behind Amherst and the Mohawk Club from Lancaster, defeating Kenmore, a team who had previously de- feated our riflemen. After sharing the title with Orchard Park in Division I play, the team compiled a remarkable western New York Sectional tournament record of 77 points, more than any other school, and 22 points shy of the all-time record. In the annual tournament they copped the AA trophy, thanks to eight wrestlers. The first place winners were Gary Butt, for the fourth straight year, Don Schoch, his second year in succession, and Dick Dorr. Others that contributed to the triumph were Bert Ernst, Ron Wilcocks, jack Hart, Doug Miller and Carl Ernst. Two seniors, Gary Butt and Don Schoch, have four-year competitive records among the best ever attained. Since only four wrestlers will be lost through graduation, next year's squad should be strong. Billies Improve Lote in Season Mr. Paar, for years one of the best coaches Williams- ville has had, has again turned out a successful team. Though it wasn't a championship campaign, the next two to three years to come should provide a strong varsity team. The team started very slowly, with many of the members battling for starting position, but when the squad became sound, numerous games were won. Among the freshmen and sophomores on this year's team were such leaders as high-scorer Mike Passmore and play-maker Denny Robinson. With Mr. Martini at the helm for the second year in succession, the freshman basketball team again has provided an interesting season. Despite a mediocre record, the members did master some of the important skills necessary. In one of their biggest contests of the year, the freshmen defeated Amherst, making the season complete. Another credit to the club was that most of its members were eighth graders. So next basketball season, the Blue and White should have a team with championship caliber. Reist two of last-year's top six men have returned. They are number one man Dave Quinn, and Bob Schultz, who should lead this squad high in the league standings. Also, a fine crop of freshmen and sophomores are expected to give the team the extra man when necessary. However, when spring returns next year only two members will have graduated. For many seasons now, Mr. Coleman has turned out superb players and successful records. This year's team should again be no different. After losing only Roy Bass and Dan LaFleur from last year's sectional champions, another top-notch golf team is anticipated. Returning lettermen who should place high among district schoolboy golfers are 'lim Koehn and Mike Churko. Rounding out the leaders will be last year's other letter winner, Don Sawyer. Next year, an even better season is ex- pected. A Youthful Linksmcin Squad Rau I--H. Krentz, H, Kuligofslci, B. Henderson, L. Wlliite, D. Sauter. Rau' 2-Coach Coleman, .-X. Eiehberg, D. Robideau, Nl. With the loss of such standouts as Denny Baskett, Doug Evans, Bill Kins- man, Dick Benninger, and Stan Brown, a green squad this season is expected. Champions this spring, but Coach Paar still has high hopes for an- other successful season. Two of this year's players should be recognized as top prospects in college baseball. They are senior pitcher Tom Osinski and junior shortstop George Mayer, who are rated among Western New York's better schoolboy players. Other returning lettermen, Ernie Bonistall, Dick Banaszak, and Mike Passmore, plus three or four boys from last season's junior varsity squad, should complete the starting lineup. After this spring's season is completed, only three players will graduate. Therefore, a splendid year is anti- cipated in 1959. A ,, W 7-nlwlg . , f mr- ---1'- 'V-3' 'A' ' Raw!-I. McPherson,j. Baseball is a game of skill, and success depends on thorough knowledge ofthe fundamentals. The 1958 Jay-Vees hope to emulate last year's stars-Tom Clark, Dave Weigel, and Dave MacPhersonfwho have been promoted to the varsity team. - J l.. HBERCROHBIE M LHOJREAEE, me Q Wm In our freshman year, led by President Kenny Greil, we organized the first freshman class party, featuring swimming, roller skating, games and dancing, The years high point was the crowning of May Queen Mary Ann Read and her attendants, Shirley XY'enham and Bonnie Bird. As sophomores, with Hal Abercrombie at the wheel, we took on a novel project, the sale of large blue and white Billies Buttons. The eve of our Spring Fantasyu was highlighted by many inches of new-fallen snow, but the dance went on despite the storm. In our junior year Downbeat, our sock-hop, filled out the early spring schedule, and then came our junior Prom. The cafteria was magically transformed into a dream ballroom, decorated by pink clouds and little pink angels. Don Simmonds was crowned king and Nancy Lawrence queen. That favorite haven, the senior refreshment stand, was ours at last, and the arrival of our school rings assured us that we were, at last, seniors. From the seed of great plans grew our very own yearbook. then the memorable Senior Prom. and at last we reached the utopia of our high school career-graduation, XVith a tear in our eye, a smile on our lips, a song in our hcart and many cherished memories, you find us, the prey of the hunt, leaving our Alma Mater, never to 'return again as students. presldent HAL ABERCROMBIE ABBY Hu Jmzlex reflect bu personalzly lm frzendx hu popularity Mayor Scnence Class Treas 1 Class Pres 2 3 4 Footballl Letters 4 3 4 Basketballl 2 Letters 3 4 Track Letter 4 Varsrry Club H1 Y I AFS Com 4 SGDIOI' C GSS Dl offlcers vlce president JOHN CHARLES HART IACK Oblzgzng and cheerful zndur trzouf and kmd Mayor Sclence Bzllboard 4 Searchlzgbt 4 Football I Wrestlrng 1 Letters 2 3 4 Varsxty Club Pres Pep Club Pres 4 Phys1csClub4 Drama fl'eUSUl'ef Club Treas 4 Crt Counc1l4 LYNN DAVID HEMINK HOOKS He :J a man of Jplendzfl abzlztze: Mayors Sclence Math Class Vlce Pres 2 Treas 3 4 Student Council 2 3 Vlce Pres 4 Billboard Sports Ed 4 Searchlzght 4 Basketball Letters 2 3 4 Baseball 1 Letters 2 Football 2 Letters 3 Track Letters 3 4 HIY 3 Physxcs Club 4 AFS Com Chairman 4 FTA secretary 'BARBARA JEANNE BIRD BONNIE So much of earth Jo much of heaven Mayors Scrence, Math, French Honor Roll 1, 2, 3, 4, Honor Soclety 3, Sec 4, Class Sec 4, Student Councrl I, Sec 3, Bzllboard 3, Seurebllgbl Jr Ed 3, Assoc Ed 4, GAA I, 2, 3, 4, Hockey Hon Team 4, Chorus 2, 3, Choraleers 3, 4, Drama Club 3, 4, French Club 4, Bowlmg Club 3, 4, Aquat rcs Club 1, 2, 3, 4, Quxll 8: Scroll 3, 4, A FS Com 4, Physics Club 4 Denotes average of 85175 or above o Q , .
