Giesala Collins hypes to the Jacket tune as the pride makes it count! WILHISHAN 1 Students Work ln 86 to MAKE IT COUNT A sleepy little river town made its mark in 1787 and a tradition of excellence was born. Williamstown - the home of the Yellowjackets - was founded as the col- onists moved westward to forge the United States. Williamstown has always been a small school with a big name in West Virginia. Students work to make each day con- sistently better and each event a success. From the first football game to the last day of school classmen buzz from one activity to another as the season changes. Consistency - the name of the game at WHS - classifies the Williamstown Band. Even though smaller than former years the Pride has a knock-out show that is cer- tain to win awards. Striving toward a winning season Jacket gridders work hard to reach their peak. Jr. High and varsity players strive to reach a common goal - a Jacket victory. The year will be spectacular, because Jackets know how to Make It Count! 2 OPENING W i .4 ,....,.,,f Lost in thought. Displayin their taste, Derik Simon and Jay Of- fenberger dress in Fine's clothes. Jacket Style The latest fashions have hit the stores, and WHS students are in the forefront. The idea of bright col- ors that can be easily mixed and matched seems to be the trend. But you don't feel comfortable in bright colors? Don't worry! You're not alone. Many students feel that the true definition of fashion is to dress the way they live and to wear colors which compliment their personality. Brian Baumgard stated, Fashion is wearing what one likes and what one thinks he looks good in. The majority of students spends between S45-100 for an outfit and as much as S30 on accessories. However, fashion doesn't always mean expensive clothing, it just means dressing to fit one's personality. Shopping Spree. WHS students often unload their money at the Mall. Sitting Pretty. This year was no exception! The festivities began Monday, October 20, with the start of float construction. Float building - including stuffing - was to be com- pleted Thursday by 9 p.m. At that time, the float committee took over the responsibility for the constructed float. By 1:00 p.m. Friday, the floats were lined up and ready to go. The parade, beginning at 1:30 p.m., contained many participants. Among them was the Wirt County Band. The Williamstown police, fire department, and ambulance service also participated. Many other school organiza- tions were involved, including: the cross country and football teams, band, and cheerleaders. Corvettes for the princesses, student body president, and 1985 Homecoming Queen were provided fcont'd. p. 131 The dance was my favorite part of Homecoming The fabulous - lt s the best dance weve had IC decorations were ' 9 ! 99 Senior Spirit. After the parade, the floats were left on the basketball courts and the princesses and their escorts proceeded to the football field. The student body poured into the stadium, noisily filling the seats for the Homecoming thuse. It began with the introduction of the queen candidates, including: Ramona Davidson escorted by Andres Venuesa, Angela Watt escorted by Charles Hill, and Angie Wheeler escorted by David Adams. The pep assembly continued as the crowd, lead by all four cheerleading squads, yelled to support the team. At 7:30 p.m., the floats were paraded around the football field before the announcement of the winn- ing entries. Winning the junior high division was the freshman float entry, Roast'Em Jackets. In the senior high and organization divisions, the juniors and band took top honors with Squirt Witt and Sailing to a Victory, respectively. The best banner award was given to the seventh graders while the freshmen won the float's overall award. As halftime neared, the anticipation mounted as the queen's coronation time neared. The crowd cheered as Angie Wheeler was crowned 1986 Homecoming queen. Unfortunately, the Jackets lost the football game, but the outstanding dance, decorated by the student council, made the evening worthwhile! WILHISHAN 13 D a v i d L e e Bobbitt! Halloween is the time of year when the season is changing - blood-red, yellow, and rust- colored leaves are falling, and people are settling down to face a cold, long winter. But, for WHS students, it's a time of tricks, treats and ghosts and goblins. This year Halloween tookton a new dimension of spirit and fun. One factor that led to a suc- cessful holiday was the fact that Halloween fell on Friday. A combination Halloweenfpep assembly was scheduled for the afternoon. A sunflower, shiek, shark and even the grim reaper filled the gym- nasium. Among the noisy crowd was assistant principal Ray Davidson who was dressed as a monster. This year's Halloween spirit showed in the number of dressed-up students. A record number of students and teachers participated, trying to make this year count! Raggedy . . . Ann? Like many WHS students she dates someone from outside the school. karl- .. Mall crew. Students fre- quently go to the Mall to meet others from other schools. Just friends. Many students, such as Angela Watt and Blair Newton, seniors, enjoy going out with friends. THE DATING GAME It's a proven fact: teens love to date. Over half of the students surveyed say they go out every weekend. Where is the most popular place to go? According to the majority, it's a trip to the movies. Next on the list is dinner and third is the Mall. Of those students that go out every weekend, close to 90 percent have a steady boyfriend or girlfriend. Only 10 percent date different people. Most of the students find their dates elsewhere. The majority go to Marietta or Parkersburg High School. Does chivalry still exist in today's modern world? At WHS it does. Out of those surveyed, most say the guy drives and picks up the check. Everyone seems to have some fantasy about the perfect date - one where everything is beautiful and somewhat of a fairy tale. Christy Altmann, sophomore, doesn't ask for much. Her idea of a perfect date is one where she doesn't have to take her little brother Ricky along! The anxiety of schooling, a problem that every student faces at one time or another at WHS Tests, notes, and discussion become a normal part of students lives during the school year. New classes and teachers enter the scene, adding a new outlook to the set curriculum. With the expertise of experience combined with the fresh outlook of the students, new ideas stir the world of academia. Report cards are a terrifying experience for some, but students work hard to make them come up to par. At WHS dents know it takes work to make it count ' .. ...... N- 1 ' ar ' . Students cite the organization and word processing skills of the com- puter as the main reasons for owning and using a computer for homework help. Over 90 percent of those asked reported using the computer at least once in the past five years. As com- puters become more common, com- puter skills will become more impor- tant to most people. Students who were surveyed recommended that if one hadn't taken a computer class, then he should hurry - the class becomes more in demand each year! WILHISHAN 2 1 LEARNING WITH CLASS Classes - the basic framework of the educational system at WHS - are the most prominent daytime activities. And well they should be, con- sidering the idea behind school is to learn. At times, it seems that academics is put on the back burner when put up against ex- tracurricular activities. How- ever, that trend appears to be shifting with awards being given for the outstanding math students and the Honor Roll bulletin boards. Teachers and students spend a considerable amount of time preparing for classes. The grades are important, and students want to make them count. Overtime Mrs Randy Garrett works on lesson plans dunng her planning period. 22 LEARNING WITH CLASS I EY Tunes. Senior high choir practices during their class period Sectioned. Field commander Giesala Collins directs the band from atop her podium during a performance. BAND WINS BIG TIME The Pride had quite a year, the best in its history. At the start, it looked to be a rough year as absences clouded the practice scene. Members survived the agony that is band camp only to return to practice in Williamstown with only half of its members. Absences were due to vacations, seminars, etc. and daily tallies ran as high as 30 missing from practice. Traveling to Sistersville for the Oil and Gas Festival, the first competition, manyewere worried about perfor- mance results. However, worries were dissolved as the awards were announced - the Pride was named Grand Champion band, defeating longtime rival Paden City. Other awards won at Sistersville include: Best overall Field Commander, Giesala Collins, Best overall Percus- sion, Third place flag corps, best overall parade band, and best musical band. The REW Review. - Cross Country coach Roy White officiates the broad jump competition at the state meet. SPRING SPORTS When we started practice on March 3, the expectations were high, especially among the veterans. As we entered the early season meets, our hopes and goals began to look even more realistic. Winning the Dunbar meet showed us and all our supporters that we were a legitimate state contender, a power if you will. Winning the Belpre Shrine Relays and completing our dualftriangular schedule unbeaten were good ac- complishments, but we still had the big meets to win. The Gazettes marked our first loss, but we still felt like we were a great team. The LKC, Section, and Regional cham- pionships followed, setting the stage for the State Meet. We had won as a team all year, and as we practiced for the State, I knew a team effort would be needed to win. We qualified fourteen guys and ten of them scored in Charleston, which helped us to our second place finish. Looking back over the past three months, I have many emotions. Pride in what our team was able to do, sadness to see so many good guys graduate and leave WHS, but most important the realization that these wonderful days will live forever in my memory and I hope in your memories, too. The most important thing! about our track team was togletherness, that bond t at makes individuals a TEAM. hank you for these wonderful weeks of the 1986 track season. SENIORITY 81 STUDENTS SPEND SUMMER IN DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS 't l'AlL 0F INDIANA While you were getting a tan at the beach or the pool, two Williamstown High School seniors, Andy Hall and Marlana Hefner, spent their summer in competition for the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps. Over 900 people, ages 14-21 auditioned, and only 128 made the final cut. Certain special requirements were needed before audi- tioning, such as, knowing how to play a brass instrument, percussion, or performing auxiliary guardwork. The corps traveled over 14,000 miles last summer and averaged 12 hours of practice a day. Their black and magenta uniforms with a giant white star on the chest clearly depicted their rising name The 'Star' of Indiana. Both Andy and Marlana said that they made many friends and that their hard work paid off when Star made it into the Drum Corps. Internationl KDCD finals. Auditions for 1987's Corps have already begun. Not only are Andy fpercussionj and Marlana fmelophoneb at- tending the camps, but this year Giesala Collins is trying out for Stars auxiliary. He would go to the airport as a kid and just watch planes land and take-off. But due to college sports, he never had the time or money to take lessons. About eight years ago he began making his dreams come true. He started tak- ing lessons at the Wood County Airport under the instruction of Jean Picker- ing. After only a year of lessons, he received his license, at last fulfilling his childhood dreams. Todaiv he goes out up to three times a month depending on the weather and his time sc edu e. Most of the time he flies a Cessna 150 single engine, 2-passenger Blane. Since he has been flying, he has flown a Piper Warrior and a twin-engine arron. He enjoys flying over mountains during the Fall or right after a snow. One might think flying wouldn't be very difficult, but it takes a great deal of concentration, quick thinking in split-second situations, and coordination. Fly- ing is a continuous learning process, said Mr. Dillon. You learn something everyday. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment and I just like the feeling of freedom. and A Sign of basketball Club bauer sign 1 16 CLUBS spmt stlcker. WILHISHAN 1 57 158 CLOSING 1 -'Sli' ,109 THE SUM TOTAL CLUSING At the closing of the school year, students and faculty alike paused to reflect upon the year's events. 1987 was a banner year for controversy as educators pondered holding statewide strike. The Iran!Contra scandal threatened to destroy the Reagan Presidency as Government Agencies were overhauled in a journalistic quest for truth. Hostages were released and captured in the name of the Jihad, and AIDS became public through a total disclosure of in- formation on the disease. In a more local perspective, Williamstown residents experienced anxiety over the bridge, and discovered a new hangout as the Student Union opened its doors. Crime became a countywide concern, and many began taking extra precautions after the murder of an Indian woman in a local theater. Activities went on as usual, but with a new twist - students participated with fervor in the more relaxed atmosphere which followed the North Central Evaluation, students rearranged their schedules to fit the school's needs as they made 1987 count! Wasn't Mel! - Jennifer Emer- son and Brandie Dye argue in art class. WILHISHAN 159 W I 4 L I 4 THF 'UWI 'l'0'l' ll An ending - everything must have one - can be sad or ha py depending on one's perspective. This year has been a roller coaster, as different sports teams had variable seasons. Acadyemically, students improved in test scores and school perfor- mance, but a statewide educational controversy threatened to retard the progress. In the bicentennial year of the U.S. Con- stitution, the mighty fifth amendment was challenged as Lt. Colonel Oliver North and NSC director John Poindexter repeatedly invoked their constitutional rights. The Iran!Contra scandal rocked the foundations of the government and became a constant on the evening news. Williamstown again distinguished itself statewide and nationally as students pushed themselves to maximum effort. The varsity girls basketball team was recognized in USA Today for breaking their long losing streak. Christy Hardin was selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation and the Century III National Leadership Conference, and Jay Offenberger was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Pride of Williamstown Mar- ching Band was selected to compete in the MBA regionals against bands from all over the East coast. The North Central Evaluation Team gave WHS a rating of excellent 'I'he Partners in Education program allowed Fenton Art Glass to honor students, thereby promoting excellence throughout the community. As if by magic, the events fell into place and then were over. Janitors began to sweep the empty hallways in preparation for the forthcoming year and administrators begin planning changes to augment the previous year. It's a continuous cycle - lear- ning to make it count. 160 CLOSING AKE IT COUNT CONTENTS1 OPENING STUDENT LIFE Pg SPORTS PECPLE g CLUBS 7 ADSXINDEX El CLOSING 4, pg. 2 .
