When that happens it is possible, in some pictures, to see the original lines: a tree will show through a woman's dress, a child makes way for a dog, a large boat is no longer on an open sea. That is called pentimento because the painter Hre- pented , changed his mind. Perhaps it would be as well to say that the old conception, replaced by a later choice, is a way of seeing and then seeing again. - Lillian Hellman, Pentimento KX FH .-SBC, 'U i l'lQlli,, ' V W4 ui? -. : Wm EQ i Y 'i , wg ,H 1 at Y 5 , i 9? , if Q .LL ll aught:-,ani 5 f u f'if ' ' N' Ma. The crisp, sharp happenings of today will blur into hazy remembrances. One memory will be overlapped by another, and then another, resulting finally in a remembrance, possibly altogether different from the actual experience. To- tem ,79 is designed to assist in the process of remembering what happened and who we really were. .,..f,.,,,,,,,,,,,,,w.,,' 4 if 'N my ' ,t t .t.i, ,,,,,. xkwrg W 1 W-'Wd V, ,W 4, K U., . .W ,, ., if.-1 WWW' WW t y .rt, . wget, M it ,..uurdll WENVE QQRNE 2:3 S if . In the years to come, as we look again at the faces of who we are today, we may be able to see, in the serious look of a smiling boy and the intensity on the face of an athlete, the responsible men and women they have become. We may be able, if the yearbook has accomplished its purpose, to experience pentimento. xxxxxxs A A ,,,, ., ,.,. ,,,.,,?m:,M. 3 J , 26 A 4 ,- f ggll w A - ,. The giving up or devoting of one's self, one's time or one's labor to the service ofa person or the pursuit ofa purpose. The 1979 Totem is dedicated to two people who fit this description: Mr. George Ruch and Mrs. Margaret Faunce. Both have served the students of Williamstown High School by giving numerous hours of their time laboring in the pursuit of excellence for the school. Mr. Ruch, as disciplinarian, and Mrs. Faunce, as yearbook and newspaper advisor, have given generously of their understanding, patience and knowledge. Their dedication to Williamstown High School is wor- thy of our dedication to them. xi-N i ,fi , -.- Mi ,, 1.5. .Q-A A . .Q J -ax . -3:4 :fbi Iliff? Growth is the word that can be used to describe the changes that have occurred within ourselves during our time at W.H.S. In many ways we are like artists but instead of a canvas, we paint on ourselves. We are, however, more fortunate than any artist, in that we can still see the original painting no matter how time changes the surface. Unlike the artist who is bound by paint and canvas to the painting of one picture fat a timej, we are able to paint many pictures at once, discarding those which no longer serve our goals. Those discarded pictures are never completely forgotteng they are part of us forever. Who can forget the feeling we had upon entering W.H.S. for the very first time or the feeling of sadness while walking up to receive our diplomas and realizing those days of high school are over. But ahead, new paths lay open. We will spend many happy hours recalling our days at W.H.S., but we must also anticipate the many paintings which we will begin fand perhaps discardj before our canvas is completed. These hands-on experiences provide better preparation for stu- dents who are about to enter the world of work. Seniors who experience this type of learning are those who are involved in the Vocational jTechnical School, the Cooper- ative Education and the Business and Industrial Arts pro- grams. In the past, these programs and students may not have had the recognition they certainly deserve and so Totem '79 would like to acknowledge a few of the many seniors who are busily engaged in preparing now for their future career choices. We had young ideas, youthful principles and a great quantity of individual enthusi- asm but we were lacking leadership. Mr. DiGiacomo became our class adviser. It was his respon- sibility to bring the disorganization into organization, to har- ness the individual enthusiasm and shape it into a collective class spirit. He has been successful in meeting his responsibil- ity. Few know of the hours he has spent over the past four years keeping records of our individual contributions to the class treasury, making arrangements for fund-raisers, for the prom and the class trips. Few people would attempt what he has accomplished. The class of '79 would like to acknowledge and earnestly thank Mr. D. for his time, devotion and dedication he has displayed toward us. Our Junior year is a year in which we start thinking, planning, and making important decisions concerning our futures, and foremost in our mind is the knowledge that next year we will be Seniors, and facing all of its challenges and rewards. Class f 1982 Freshman year in high school can be a very trying exper- ience. For the first time in our lives we were expected to act as young adults with all of the accompanying responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is getting an education. While getting a good education doesn't necessarily guarantee success it does enable us to get a better grasp on events occurring around us. We owe ourselves this education, for if we are to survive in a world which grows in increasingly more scientific and technological, we must understand the events and the powers which shape our future. L In an age when the purpose of an action or a program comes under close inspection by others, it is conceivable that the following question might arise: What is the purpose of high school sports? Can a purpose be defined? Can a sports program be measured or evaluated? Are we even asking the right questions? Since Totem '79 is being written and dedicated for the present class of '79 but also for the men and women of the class of '79, we must consider the meaning of sports to us now and its meaning 20 years from now. Our Athletic Program is organized to provide an opportuni- ty for as many students as possible to compete on an interscho- lastic level. It is here that studentjathletes are offered an opportunity to develop their optimum potential - physically, mentally and socially. Often, though, this philosophy is overlooked in a discussion of the season's record. While winning is desired, a winning attitude is the coaches' ultimate goal. Every athlete is encour- aged to develop a winning attitude - which is born out of himself. The athlete's own desire for personal achievement, his sense of pride in himselfand his team and his ability to become a self-disciplined person are the qualities which must be under- stood and attained before a student becomes an athlete. The transition from student to athlete also demands an appreciation of losing. Losing team records are disheartening for all concerned: players, coaches, fans and parents, and sometimes our attention becomes riveted on the winfloss count. But the student who fails to realize that winning and losing are really part of the same thing, fails to become an athlete. The reward of the sports experience goes beyond the final score. Friendships made. Jokes shared. Sacrifices endured. Respect earned. Individual goals achieved. These things be- come our valued memories of what it meant to be an athlete at Williamstown High School. Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle? Real isn't how you are made, said the Skin Horse. It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real. Does it hurt? asked the Rabbit. Sometimes, said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. When you re Real you don't mind being hurt. Does it happen all at once, like being wound up, he asked, or bit by bit? lt doesn' happen all at once, said the Skin Horse. You become. lt takes a long time. That's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you ean't be ugly, except to people who don't understand. Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit A yearbook takes a long time to become Real. lt doesn't happen in the nine months of hard work and caring by people who 'see' the book even before it exists. Real will happen to this book only after it's been pored over, laughed over and cried over for a long, long time. Totem '79 wasn't designed to be Real right away, lt will bceome. lt will happen ... slowly ... after some pages have been torn, after some pictures have been smudged, after the binding has been broken and after the cover has grown shabby. But thcse things won't matter-because the book will be Real. You understand pa 3 J' jf 0.55. -f . : Desiree Howell. The National Honor Society is an organization designed to recognize the student who has shown the qualities of Scholar- ship, Service, Character and Leadership. Membership is one of the highest honors a student can receive. This year, under the leadership and guidance of our advisor, Ms. Wood, the Honor Society has begun expanding their activities. They have opened up a Special Honor Roll for those students whom teachers feel deserve special recognition for the efforts. -A new idea of the Honor Society Luncheon was inaugurat- ed. The Luncheon was held for all members in order that they might get together to talk, laugh and exchange ideas on how our school might become even better. Having demonstrated their scholastic ability, many of the Honor Society members joined together to tutor those stu- dents who desire extra help in troubling subject areas. 4 Christian Life Club f'i:7.'.??7, J x,,k K s Standing: Sue Cattell, Martha Williams, Wendy Weaver, Wendy Jones, Linda Williams, Miss Eisenlohr, advisor. Not only do I se the pictures, but I remember the many layouts for it before the best one was designed, the thoughts and ideas that went into it, and the careful planning to make each page full of meaning. In order to make a huge project successful, you must have at least a handful of people that possess qualities of reliability, loyalty, creativity, and most of all, endurance.
