DEDICATION With sincere appreciation, we, the senior class of 1969 gratefully dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Nolen V. Leach, our superintendent, who has served our school well and given his devoted services for our utmost benefit during his four short years here. We shall never forget his broad smile and understanding concerning everything we have done. We would like to thank Mr. Leach for the enthusiasm he aroused in our inspiring history classes, for his everlasting patience in coaching our basketball teams, and his grandfatherly personality that has kept all students in our school in the same family at all times. Our high school days would have been incomplete without him. PEPSI-COLA BOTTLING COMPANY Quincy, Illinois HAMILTON MOTORS La Belle, Missouri PEOPLES' BANK OF WYACONDA Wyaconda, Missouri The senior class gratefully dedicates this yearbook to Mrs. Merle Sharp, our faith- ful sponsor who has patiently gone through many trying times with us during these past four years. When we refused to get serious and plan our events and practice our play, she smiled and tried desperately hard to make us understand the necessity of these things, never saying anything harsh or hurting anyone in any way. Inter- rupting her classes to get candy from the home economics room didn't produce any drastic effects, although we were told that we were eating up our profit. We all admire her lady-like ways and soft voice, although we haven't yet found out how she maintains them at all times. She never failed to be around when we needed her, and many times her husband willingly dedicated his services to our class, making our thanks double. SANDKNOP'S CLOTHING STORE Edina, Missouri MARI-DON'S FLOWERS Canton, Missouri DOROTHY'S CAFE AND BEAUTY SALON Gorin, Missouri—Open Daily TO WILLIAMSTOWN COMMUNITY We, the senior class of 1969 feel honored to dedicate this yearbook to our community for many kind- nesses over the years. Reminiscing over the many years of school here at Williamstown High School, we, the senior class of 1969, proudly give our gratitude and thanks in these few lines to our surrounding community. The out- standing PTA of our community has worked its way to that special place in our hearts. Since 1953 the PTA has honored the athletes of our school during an athletic banquet held every year. At this banquet each athlete receives a small token for his exerted abilities of that year. The Alumni Banquet, a reunion of graduates of Williamstown High School, is held every year here at Williamstown. Graduates come from long distances just to shake the hand of an old friend, letting them know they have not been forgotten. Everyone belongs to that closely-knit family, remembering every detail of school as though they had left school only yesterday. We take pride in the attendance of our community at the separate eighth grade graduation which dis- tinguishes the grade school graduates from those of the high school. Although the eighth grade gradu- ations were not as highlighted as the senior graduation, the graduation was a cherished memory of all eighth graders. The people of our community will always be remembered for supporting any school event, regardless of the size or type. The students of Williamstown High School wish to thank our wonderful community for the following events which it has made possible through its staunch support: Athletic activities, our plays of our junior and senior years, pie suppers, OES and Masons honor of the seniors, Hornet king and queen crowning, Sophomore Pilgrimages sent by Federated Clubs, Boys’ State, Girls' State, senior trips, banquets, dinners, yearbook projects, school paper publication, talent shows, Kirksville Senior Day, National Honor Society meetings and inductions, district contests, and the ballfield lights which were instigated by Mr. Norman Merrell. Other well-attended events by our community are the operettas, both high school and grade school. We have had many operettas during Christmas and Easter holidays. We students here at Williamstown wish to thank you, our community, for supporting those of us attending the Kirksville contests, both academic and musical. Attending these contests, we displayed our knowledge with other students showing that much knowledge may be gained from a little school. Seniors who have graduated from Williamstown High School are grateful for the lasting memories of school days the community has given us. Baccalaureate and commencement will always be cherished in thanks given to the community for helping the seniors reach their long-awaited goals. Our sincere appreciation is given to the members of the Boards of Education, cooks, janitors, home- room mothers, and teachers for keeping our school as it is today for so many years. It will always re- main in our hearts as a home-away-from-home. Thanks to our community. Our class, made up of Mary Margaret Marsot, Jane Shannon, Nanette Hudnut, Mary Dochterman, Janet Hall, Vickie Phillips, Dennis Danforth, Brent Welker, Tony Shuman, Jimmie Spurgeon, Jimmy Savage, Raymond Rash, and Douglas Duffie, came to Miss Mable Walker with our hurts, problems, and happen- ings during our first and second years of school here at Williamstown. During this time we lost Jimmy Savage and Douglas Duffie; however, Mike Rainbolt joined us on our journey in the second grade. After two years with Miss Mable, we found ourselves wondering what our new teacher, Mrs. Helen Bowen, would be like. Was she nice or was she strict? Questions like this darted in and out of our minds. But we found her to be one of the nicest teachers we have ever had. By this time we had finally become adjusted to the regular school routine. We had the misfortune to lose Mike Rainbolt and Raymond Rash in the third grade and Brent Welker in the fourth. We gained Harold Kitson in the third grade. However, what with the usual pulling of Janet's and Mary Margaret's braids, we moved on to another room and teacher. In the fifth and sixth grades, we found we had another new teacher, Miss Mary Francis Olson. Having lost Harold Kitson, our number consisted of the faithful nine, plus two new students, Sandra Pritchard and Jerry Kaylor, who joined us in the fifth grade. The opening of school found our old friend, Mike Rainbolt, back with us, but by the middle of the school term, Sandra Pritchard had moved on to another area. With so many people leaving us and coming back, we thought there must be something contagious about our personalities. During the seventh grade our teacher was Mrs. Woodrow Hill, and our number was decreased when Mike Rain- bolt decided he wanted to leave us for another school. In the eighth grade, we found another new teacher, Mrs. Violet Compton, teaching our number consisting of the faithful nine beginners, Jerry Kaylor, who joined our ranks in the fifth grade, Brent Welker, Mike Rainbolt, who like the prodigal son returned, and our newest member, Susan Hampsmire. Well, there we all were, ready yet unwilling to begin the last four years on our journey to our diploma. As we soon found, Susan and Mike soon moved on to different places to complete their education, decreasing our number to the following: Dennis Danforth, Mary Dochterman, Janet Hall, Nanette Hudnut, Jerry Kaylor, Mary Margaret Marsot, Jane Shannon, Tony Shuman, Jimmie Spurgeon, Vickie Phillips, and Brent Welker. Finding the homework harder than expected, we charged through the freshman year, eagerly looking forward to the famous summer vacation ahead. Our teachers of this year had been Mr. Nolen V. Leach, Mrs. Merle Sharp, Mr. Robert Wheeler, Mr. Junior Lee, Mrs. Sinile, Mr. Sinile, and Mrs. Simons. During our freshman year, Mrs. Sharp began her long career as sponsor for our class. Our sophomore year found so many teachers that we hardly knew how to cope with them, but we had one more to help us along the way, Philip Briscoe. This year we saw the usual events of a school year go skipping by one by one. The faculty of this sophomore year was made up of the following teachers: Mr. Nolen V. Leach, Mrs. Merle Sharp, Mr. Robert Wheeler, Mr. Junior Lee, Mr. Sinile, Mrs. Sinile, and Mrs. Simons, and Mrs. Simler. Upon reaching the junior year (oh, finally, only one more year to go), we still had our same twelve members of the freshman class. But Vickie Phillips gave up her childhood friends for a new life of marriage. This year was brightened by preparation for the junior-senior banquet and senior graduation, knowing that the next year all this would be ours. Putting up with the mischievous acts on our part were the following teachers: Mr. Nolen V. Leach, Mrs. Beulah Gould, Mrs. Merle Sharp, Mr. Robert Wheeler, Mr. Junior Lee, Mrs. Simler, and Mr. William Edwards. Here we are after eleven years of back-breaking and nerve-shattering work! Jerry Kaylor decided he too en- joyed the life of marriage and wed his high school sweetheart, Lola Nichols. Even though for eleven years we looked forward to the day of our advancement into the world, we now look back with regret at having to leave this wonderful home of education. With much respect, we thank our teachers of this year, Mr. Nolen V. Leach, Mrs. Merle Sharp, Mr. Junior Lee, Mr. William Edwards, Mrs. Beulah Gould, Mr. Jimmie Lillard, the three grade teachers, Mrs. Welker, Miss Golden, and Miss Mable Walker, and we also wish to express our grati- tude to the community for helping us reach our high goal. We now hope that we can make talented use of the knowledge our teachers of these twelve years have planted in our minds. —Mary Dochterman —Janet Hall MISSOURI GRAVEL COMPANY Producers and Shippers Agriculture Limestone Crushed Stone Ewing, Missouri THE FARMERS' MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE CO. As our feet touch the ground where the building once stood, fond memories of school days pass through our minds as we discuss what each is doing now. Jimmy Wayne Spurgeon now owns a 1,000-acre farm, has settled down, and is happily married to Kathy Hud- nut. They have six beautiful children. Mary Margaret Marsot is preparing to go to Switzerland, where she will be the main reporter covering the latest developments in Dr. Schwilmelbolm's bacteriological experiments; however, this will not interfere with the close family relationship she holds with her husband and three children. Philip Ray Briscoe and Brent Allen Welker reside together and have successfully resisted the attack against bachelorhood; however, their pad is noted for the swinging parties that frequent it. Brent is exercising his ability of argument (or long-windedness) in the Senate, while Phil makes appearances as the nation's favorite comedian and author. Janet Ellen Hall is head bookkeeper of her husband's nationwide chain of garages. She has eight darling child- ren and still no bulge in her figure. After high school graduation, Dennis Joe Danforth went through college to receive his Ph.D. in zoology. Now he spends his spare time studying Nature at his South Dakota Camp Bearskin, which he runs to support his wife and seven youngsters. Mary Nanette Hudnut is now an adventuress, traveling the world over searching for new experiences. Anthony LaVelle Shuman circles the globe as a hairdresser, styling hair for starlets and royalty and as founder of the largest wig and cosmetic business now in existence. His wife is rated among the ten most beautiful women. Mary Jane Shannon is busy keeping books at the famed Ruidoso Downs Race Track, and she also rides as the world's second female jockey. Yet she still has time for her husband, son, and daughter. Mary Fern Dochterman is now Dean of Women at Radcliff College. She is also married and has four pert youngsters. As we leave the beloved schoolgrounds we see how each senior of '69 has succeeded, and all because of the good start we received from dedicated teachers at Williamstown High School. —Jane Shannon Nanette Hudnut EDINA FEED AND LIVESTOCK SUPPLY WESTERN AUTO Edina, Missouri Edina, Missouri KELLEY'S FURNITURE Edina, Missouri 14 HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR DAY Tuesday, April 8, 1969 Northeast Missouri State College Kirks ville, Missouri 9:00-9:45-Registration -------------------------------------------------------- Baldwin Hall Members of Panhellenic Council Assembly-College Auditorium 9:45-11:30 A. The opening march by O. E.S. officers was followed by the flag ceremony. After the pledge to the flag, everyone was invited to sing 'The Star Spangled Banner . Mary Spurgeon, Worthy Matron, gave the welcome speech. After the seniors were introduced, they were each presented with a beautiful cor- sage or boutonniere by the conductress, Mrs. Charles Samples, and associate conductress, Mrs. Wayne Welker. The tokens were white roses (class flower) set on a silver leaf with ribbons of silver and turquoise (class colors.) A prayer by the Rev. V.T. Woods and the song, ' ust a Closer Walk With Thee , by everyone followed the flower presentation. A unique wishing well ceremony was given. After choosing a ribbon which dangled from a tiny wishing well, each student called aloud the number on the card attached to his ribbon. Ten women each had a different short verse expressing a wish, and read it as her number was called. As the O.E.S. officers sang School Days to their guests of honor, more than one senior felt pangs of nostalgia and blinked at watery eyes for the beloved surroundings they would soon be forced to leave. Following the benediction by Rev. V.T. Woods everyone joined in singing Now Is The Hour. Members of the O.E.S. and Masons retired in form, after which everyone was invited downstairs for refreshments. In the dining hall, the seniors' table was laid with a turquoise cloth, decorated by silver candlesticks and a centerpiece, consisting of two students under an arch inscribed with the class motto 'They Conquer Who Believe They Can. (A banner with the same had been hung on the wall of the meeting room.) Nut cups had been fashioned to resemble fullblown white roses. Refreshments of punch or coffee and cake were accompa- nied with a very unique form of ice cream. Each slice bore in turquoise, a graduates silhouette and the class motto. Various arrangements of white roses adorned the tables. During refreshments. Senior Class President, Denny Joe Danforth, took the opportunity to thank the members of the East for the ceremony, and to express the appreciation of the seniors for the kindness and respect shown to them by the O.E.S. and the Masons. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all of you. At a time when there is much talk about the differences between the generations, I think it is useful to remark upon a similarity between your graduating class of 1969 and my graduating class of 1930. Your high school years have been historic ones. When you entered high school, man was making his elementary steps into space. In your senior year, three brave Americans journeyed around the moon. When I graduated from high school, only three years had passed since a man flew for the first time across the Atlantic Ocean. Despite the obvious difference in years, we have this in common: we all know what it is to be young at the start of an age of adventure. You will discover, as I did, that each person must make his own exploration of the world, make his own discoveries, shape his own triumphs, endure his own tragedies. Each of us is an explor- er of himself, of history, of knowledge, of the intricate and beau- tiful and wonderful varieties of experience. Each of you will make a different kind of exploration, some in continued formal education, some in industry or business or agri- culture. Whatever your choice, learn. Learn all you can about yourself and the world. Your final year in high school was the beginning of an age of ad- venture, an age you will help to shape. Another place like Williamstown where people, young and old, work together to produce a remarkable and family-like community cannot be found in history or present-day United States. Mrs. Etta Nelson kept the records and bookkeeping procedures of office routine in order, seeing that nothing was forgotten or left behind. I looked forward to the daily visits of Ed LaVelle who deserved a perfect attendance record, for he attended school more often than some of the students of Williamstown school. The tan cycloramas are suspended on hardwood tracks which draw all sections off to the sides of the stage. Doors, windows, a fireplace, etc., can be made in the cyclorama. This set can be used for concerts, graduation, or as any in- terior setting. Then the interior set consists, of one drop and two to four wings with overhead borders. On the drop are painted doors, windows, a fireplace, a mantel, a clock, a picture, and candles. The beautiful hand painted wood-sawn set consists of one back section and four wings and is useful for operettas or plays calling for outdoor scenes. And the advertising drop, used since the old vaudeville days, is still used today. Our advertising drop curtain has beautiful hand painted scenery and many adver- tisements, donated from around Williamstown. To all who contributed in any way we give our many thanks. The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Olen Fretwell, president. She turned the installa- tion over to Mrs. Hilbum Fishback. who installed the officers: Mrs. Donald Waterman, president: Mrs. Jim McLaughlin, vice president; Mrs. Robert Shannon, treasurer; and Mrs. Lester Bevans. secretary. The new officers took their places and held the rest of the meeting. Room count was taken. The presi- dent read a letter from the Canton PTA inviting the group to the Dis- trict conference at Canton. Mrs. Fretwell honored Miss Mable with a pin and lifetime mem- bership to the PTA for her ser- vices for 27 years. Mrs. Robert Scott read the devotional and Mrs. Chester Ewart had the program Mr. Lee’s workshop class had the classroom demonstration display- ing work the group had done. The meeting closed and refresh- ments were served by Mrs. Norman Briscoe. Mrs. Pedro Spurgeon. Mrs. Pat Cray. Mrs. Vincent Marsot and Mrs. Joe Danforth. TO PTA We, the senior class of 1969, have proudly set up this section of the Hornet for the PTA. All students were all so grateful. Looking back, one wonders how the school was able to afford all the items and events which we students took for granted: the extras that made everything a little more special, like stage curtains and valances for the new grade rooms. How were these financed? Simple. They were financed by the Parents-Teachers Association. Not only did this dedicated organization back school projects, but they earned the money to do so through fun-filled carnivals, held in 1949-50, 1950-51, 1951-52, and 1952-53 by the P.T.A. itself. Besides these, a series of rollicking events took place, well liked by the community, which were: Minstrel in 1950; ,fDarktown Strutters Minstrel , 1951; ’The Billtown Minstrel , 1952; Show Boat Revue ’Tat Pourri Revue , 1954; Wild West Frolic, 1955, and Hillbilly Wedding, 1956. Since Williamstown understands the importance of sportsmanship in a well-rounded personality, it is only natural that the P.T.A. was instru- mental in starting the first annual track meet there in 1958 when Kyle Hayworth was head of the physical education department, and the first annual athletic banquet in 1953 when T.L. Philcher of Hannibal was the guest speaker of the evening; the first alumni banquet in 1959 and that memorable event the old-timers’ basketball tournament held the first, second, fourth, and sixth of February, 1960. In the tangible sports realm the Parents-Teachers Association purchased a basketball scoreboard for the gymnasium in 1958, numerous sets of basketball suits through the years, warm-up jackets, and lockers which were placed in the girls’ dressing room. For all these events and gifts, the school says thank you to that mira- cle-working establishment-the Williamstown P.T.A. The elementary grades opened the evening. Wearing headbands with pink ears and white cotton tails, the first grade sang Peter Cottontail and gave the bunny hop. Using instruments made of utensils used in the kitchen, the third and fourth grade had a kitchen band with Janet Neisen and Jinny Scott as directors. They played Good Old Kitchen Band and Music, Music . Singing Easter Parade , the fifth and sixth grade girls also gave a parade in their Easter bonnets. To close the program, the fifth and sixth grade boys sang The Caisson Song and Blue-Tail Fly . Three fiddlers, Howard Nichols, Jim McClain, and Elmer Munzlinger, participated in the fiddlin' contest, and Jim Linsey accompanied them on the guitar. While the judges were coming to their decision, Jim Linsey and Miss Golden played some of the all time favorite songs. The judges decided that the fiddlers were so good they all deserved first prize. Bill Ryan auctioned off the boxed pies and the suppers. The most expensive box was auctioned five times and brought twenty-five dollars. Following the sale a contest was held for Williamstown's best hunter. Each vote cost one penny. Carl W. (Bruiser) Spurgeon won the prize—a tiny, toy skunk. Stuffed animals were given for the prettiest box and door prizes. After these activities, pie, coffee, and pop were available for those who had not brought or bought boxes. At the same time a cake walk was conducted in the home economics room while a grab bag was held on the gym. An estimated 300 or 400 people attended with gross intake approximately $215. After seeing the number of people in attendance and witnessing their willing support of the project, the auc- tioneer said, It could only happen at Williamstown. THANKS TO KGRC HANNIBAL, MO. This event was sponsored by the seventh and eighth grades of the Williamstown School, and was termed by all a great success. As is customary, the pagent was opened with the parade of states. Mestress of Acrimony, Mess Bertha Parks, known better as Mr. Robert Scott, announced each candidate and gave their qualifications, as they paraded, one at a time, before an enraptured audience. In order to become a contestant for Mess America 1969, each contestant is required to have a special talent, and the ability to perform this talent before the audience. Never before in the history of the Mess America pagent was there such an unusual array of talent. The audi- ence was first entertained by Mess North Carolina, Jimmie Spurgeon. Jimmie was in his best voice as she gave us a sample of her famous hog calling abilities. Still held in the spell of Mess North Carolina, Mess Maine, Danny Devaux came forth to further captivate the audience with a poetic reading. Mess Hawaii, Robert Scott, Jr., showed his native ability in hula dancing. Mess Arizona, Steve Savage, amazed the audience with his unusual version of the song, Little Brown Jug. Mess Maryland, Frank Gray, was keeping with the mod scene with his modern dance. Mess Wyoming, Elmer Munzlinger, fiddled up a storm on her violin, while accompanied by Mr. Robert Legg on the guitar. Mess New York, Brusier Spurgeon, entertained by accompa- nying himself on the uke and singing the popular song, Tip Toe Through The Tulips. Mess Texas, Cy Spurgeon, gave an interesting monologue on her boyfriend’s ranee, complete with sound effects, Mess Iowa, Dale Spurgeon, and Mess Utah, David Brennan, both recited poetry. Mess Florida, Bill Murphy, showed the ladies how to keep a lovely figure. Mess Alaska, Bill Edwards, gave us a treat on her harmonica. The Joyful Noises, a singing group consisting of Lois Bevans, Basil Bevans, Jenny Beth Bevans, accompanied on the guitar by Virgil Bevans, and Becky Scott on the piano, presented three musi- cal selections between the parade of states and the talent division, '1 Want To Live, Moving On, and Cincinnati Ohio. Another group, the Electrical Charges, Yvonne Phillips, Barbara Dochterman, Lucy Scott, Brenda Bevans, and Virgil Bevans, also entertained. They sang two songs, I Don't Want to Play House and Harper Valley PTA. Randy Lillard and Brian Munzlinger appeared throughout the program with hilarious skits of heah kum de judge. The judges, Mrs. Wayne Welker, Miss Golden, and Mrs. Ruful Nelson, had a very hard decision to make. After much deliberation, six finalists instead of five were chosen because of a tie: Fourth alternate, Mess Florida, Bill Murphy; third alternates, Mess Iowa, Dale Spurgeon; Mess Utah, David Brennan; second alternate, Mess New York, Bruiser Spurgeon; first alternate, Mess Alaska, Bill Edwards. Mess America of 1969, is Cy Spurgeon. Mess America of 1968, Billie Hines crowned the new Mess America after making a few remarks. Tears were in her eyes as the new Mess America made the traditional walk. Everyone enjoyed the program very much. The grades are happy with the results. They are pleased to say that they made a gross total of $113.00. They also wish to thank everyone who made the program a success. I had been looking forward to an exciting day in the capital city ever since the day I had the honor of being chosen to represent the Williamstown Sophomore Class of '68 and '69. Also going on the trip were Mrs. Charles Arnold, who took us, Debbie Fleer of Lewistown, Linda Yates of Monticello, Sandra Henry of LaGrange, and Maggie Queen of Canton. We girls were too excited to sleep-we giggled instead. Upon reaching the Capitol Building we registered by our district number and were given name cards to pin on our dresses. The tours began at approximately 8:30 A.M. The guides were the members of women's organizations. Our first guide explained to us the reason for all the arches-that they were stronger and could support weight better than anything else. We were taken through the section that contained beautiful murals of history through the ages. It started with the Indians and finished with bridges and factories. While visiting the House chamber we were allowed to sit in the representatives chairs. Our guide also took us on a tour of the Senate Chamber. There was usually a different guide for every section. After finishing the tour of the Capitol we were escorted to the Executive Mansion where we were greeted by the charming, Mrs. Warren E. Hearnes. The Mansion was truly beautiful, but its excellence could not match that of the Capitol. There is a series of changes being made to the Mansion by Mrs. Hearnes. The next tour was to be of the Supreme Court. This proved to be very interesting. We then had our lunch at the main floor of the Selinger Center, to one side of the Capitol building. The food was delicious and afterwards the governor of the state of Missouri, Warren E. Hearnes, gave us a speech on how lucky we were. We were lucky; some children don't even reach their sophomore year. Since the Secretary of State, James C. Kirkpatrich, was out of town, his assistant also talked with us. We also heard from Haskel Holman, State Auditor and John C. Danforth, Attorney General. Miss Elvira Perales of Peru was twenty-four years old, and a freshman in college. She told us that she won a scholarship by signing up at their government office. We were told that a lot of kids, where she comes from, never have a high school education. How lucky we really are! We sophomores should be thankful to the Missouri Federation of Women's Clubs who make our trip possible and who makes it possible for sophomores all over the state of Missouri to attend an annual sophomore pilgrimage. Missouri is the only state of the fifty states that has a Sophomore Pilgrimage. I would like to sincerely thank the PBM Club of Canton who made my trip to Jefferson City, possible. —Connie Spurgeon 2:30 A.M. CANTON STATE BANK Canton, Missouri TROPHIES With great honor and esteem we dedicate this page to the many years of sports events and to the coaches who have striven to make use of our sportsmanship abilities. These trophies are long-lasting memories of tournaments with fellow athletes. This year we are honored by the center trophy which shows great accomplishments in girls' softball, and even though our boys did not receive a trophy, we wish to remind everyone that they won the boys' softball tourna- ment. To our coach of this year, Mr. Nolen V. Leach, we wish to express our sincere and appreciative thanks. Since this was our last year to compete in sports activities, we want everyone to cherish these memories as we shall, remembering them as though they were only yesterday.
