GOULD BE VANS GARAGE CONNER'S CORNER SMITH BROTHERS WILLIAMSTOWN, MISSOURI TAYLOR, MISSOURI WYACONDA, MISSOURI Parents are very dear to us all. Their presence makes the day bright and secure. Their absence leaves a hole in the day. Mrs. Ruby Sweet who pass- ed away in 1961 was a mother who possessed many varied talents. Her quiet charm and shy ways brought her the fame of being a sweet Mrs. Sweet. She is missed by all who knew her as the lovely lady she was. Time will never blot out the memory of Mr. Hollis Hudnut, whose de- parture from our midst on June 17 was a sad time indeed. We take this opportunity to pay Mr. Hudnut the honor he so richly deserves. He was a devoted farmer who devoted much time to our school as a board member, bus driver, and a concerned parent. His quiet manner and easy smile warmed the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him. His kind- ness and determined judgement will long be remembered after time has washed away our footprints. Francis Corwin Bowen will always be remembered around Wil- liamstown for the ten years of his life which he gave wholly to this school. Mr. Bowen led rousing discussions in the classroom, led in laugh- ter at a joke, and led in helping push students toward a useful life. Mr. Bowen's bright smile will always be missed by many a student and many an adult in Williamstown. We wish to devote a quiet moment to Miss Florence Young who was killed in an auto accident on March 8, 1968. Her busy sched- ule of teaching high school and elementary music classes, freshman English class and also private music lessons kept her on the move at all times. Yet she always had time for church work, and to help anyone or go anywhere she could be of service. Her laughter still echoes in Williamstown where her friends will always remember her. Our young lives have been full of sunshine and roses throughout our years of schooling because of the loving care of our great parents. Their understanding of our big and little troubles has pulled our class through the tough days. We dedicate this yearbook to our parents as a tiny portion of the big thank you we feel in our hearts. We were lucky to get Mrs. Beulah Gould back to Williamstown not only as a teacher but also as our senior class sponsor. She worked for us until the job was finished. Our respect for her can only be over- shadowed by our admiration of her young spirit and helpful attitude. This book is for her with our blessing. . Scholarship .............................4 (Alternate) Class History On the last Monday in August, 1956, twelve boys and girls eagerly, yet timidly, set out on a very important trip. This voyage was to take them through twelve exciting years of study together. These twelve students had many new things to learn, and Miss Mable Walker was their dedicated teacher. Most important, of course, was the independent feeling of each being on his very own for the first time. Many big decisions had to be reached- Where shall I sit?'1 Where shall I hang my coat? Does that bell ring just for our room? and so on for many busy days. Even- tually they were all adjusted as eoch new day proved to be a little less disturbing. The class consisted of Linda Lee Allison, Vickie Lee Cecil, Jerry Wayne Day, Danny Joe Desvaux, Ricky Joe Hines, Mary Lou Howard, Dennis Rickey Lillard, Ray Al- fred McFarland, Lola Fern Nichols, Raymond Rash, Jr., John Sweet, and Judith Ann Todd. During the second grade Raymond Rash left our class, but we gained Gary Little and Barbara Flecher for a portion of that year. Miss Mable was the teacher again this year. In the third grade Mrs. Carpenter was our teacher, and Jerry Day moved to another school. Our lessons kept us busy, but we enjoyed our days together. Mrs. Bowen was our fourth grade instructor and Linda Allison moved away. Danny Desvaux left our class in the fifth grode, but we gained Richard Hudnut. This year we learned our lessons under the guidance of Miss Olson. Also in this year the fifth and sixth grades went on a trip to Quincy, Illinois, as a class project. During this year we did not gain or lose any classmates. The fifth and sixth grades took their trip to Keokuk, Iowa, this year. We were also under the guidance of Miss Olson again this year. The seventh grode found us with a new member. Penny Pritchard, who was here only one year. This year found us busy with new lessons to learn and Mrs. Hill as our devoted teacher. This year we also took an active part in junior high basketball. Qjr class trip took us on a tour of Jefferson City, Missouri. Finally, we reached the eighth grade. We here gained David Adams as a classmate. This year was a busy year, as we hod to plan for the class trip to Springfield, Illinois, and, most important of all, the eighth grade graduation. Basketball was a special sport activity. Mrs. Hill was our teacher again this year. In August, 1964, eleven freshmen in a happy and energetic mood, started their journey up the steps of WHS to start one of four years of high school. What was in front of us we didn't know, but we knew that the next four years would be exciting. The eleven freshmen were: Vickie Cecil, David Adams, Elaine Brennan, Leonard Cain, Ricky Hines, Mary Lou Howard, Richard Hudnut, Rickey Lillard, Ray McFarland, John Sweet, and Judith Ann Todd. This year Lola Nichols went to school at Wyoconda, Missouri. As we took seats in study hall that first day, we noticed all of the upperclassmen and the teachers we were to associate with. Those teachers were: Mr. Hill (superintendent), Mr. Edwards, Mrs. Hill, Mr. Ownbey, Mr. Worley, and Miss Young. AW. Edwards was our sponsor for that year. That year was an unforgetting novel experience for us as we had just finished one part of our important journey. Surprisingly enough we all survived the summer and were ready to start to school again. We lost two students from our class, David Adorns and Vickie Cecil, but we gained Danny Desvaux and Lola Nichols back. This year we received all new teachers, and, also for the first time in the history of Williamstown School, we gained a secretary. The new teachers were: AW. Leach (superintendent), AWs. Nelson (secretary), Mr. Sirtele, Mrs. Sinele, Mr. Lee, Mrs. Simmons, and Mr. Wheeler. Mrs. Sinele was our sponsor. This year we were noted as being the usual silly sophomores. The next year, as jolly juniors, we didn't gain or lose anyone. Our teachers for this year were: AW. Leach (superintendent), AWs. Nelson (secretary), AW. Lee, Mrs. Sinele, AW. Sinele, Mrs. Sharp, Mr. Wheeler, AWs. Simler, and AWs. Simmons. Mrs. Sinele was also our sponsor this year. Our junior-senior banquet, variety show, etc., were each experiences we all enjoyed. The senior year, our final and most important year, makes us fully aware that our high school years are behind us, but will not be forgotten. There are too many memories of the many friends that were made, the many projects that we carried on, and the good times we all had together to mention them here. Our teachers for our final year were: Mr. Leach (superintendent), Mrs. Nelson (secretary), Mr. Lee, Mrs. Gould, Mr. Edwards, AW. Wheeler, Mr. Lillard, Mrs. Simler, and Mrs. Sharp. Mrs. Gould was our devoted sponsor for this fine year. We discovered that this year was the busiest year for us, with the senior play, junior-senior banquet, the senior trip, and other events which make the senior year so interesting and exciting. These were all exciting events for us and we shall cherish these memories from Williamstown High School as long as we live. Ray McFarland COMPLIAWNTS OF EGBERT BROS. Who calls her pokey? It's Laney on the beam; She can flatten with a joke Or flatten any seam. Spring brings graduation; The big night is here. Eyes are all shining; Some with a tiny tear. It's Rick the go-getter Winning prizes for his tricks; Our school is in need Of a few more Ricks. We've tacked our hopes To the bright evening star. Our plans all seem great; We'll treck near and far. Listen to Judy giggle; She never stops her chatter; Once 1 heard her silent. What was the matter? Who says Richard's shy? He is bound to win. After he stops his chatter, He'll get you with a grin. Lola is our tiger; She's a little whirl; Never leaves you sober, 'Cause she's a laughing girl. Hey! It's Leonardo, King of the forest. He's got a real kind heart. A carpenter to the poorest. Here's another Rickey Full of good surprises. Hits you with a funny; Then takes home all the prizes. Fastest in the West Is our girl Lu Lu; She'II stop you with a pencil. And never leave you blue. Keeping Danny busy Is really quite a job; He's the athlete on the go-go; He'll never plow the sod. John's the bottomless pit; You'll always find his mind Dwelling on chicken and taters , He's the hungry kind. Begin at the beginning; Run the race for fun; When they add up the score. You've won Second to None. Ray is on the move; He'll never be stopped; His mind is always working; He can't ever be topped. This is an annual event of the Williamstown OES and the Masonic Fraternity. All stations of the OES were filled with officers in formal dress. The Worthy Matron, Mrs. Mattie Ford, and the Worthy Patron, D. A. Leslie presided in the East. Also seated in the East was the Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge, Bill Lasswell. All three welcomed the guests. Nine of the seniors, thirteen parents, six teachers and many friends were there. The following seniors were introduced: Mary Lou Howard, Elaine Brennan, Lola Fern Nichols, Judith Ann Todd, Rickey Lil- lard, Ricky Hines, Ray McFarland, Danny Desvaux and Leonard Cain. Each expressed plans for the future. Richard Hudnut and John Sweet were not present. The class sponsor, Mrs. Beulah Gould, was present and seated with the group. Each girl was pre- sented a red rose corsage and each boy a red rose boutonniere, gifts from the chapter. The theme for the evening was Smiles. A program was given by the OES members spelling out the word smile and forming a star with the letters and appropriate colors and flowers. At the close of this ceremony all officers sang the song, Smiles. Mrs. Shirley Simler of Gorin was pianist. The speaker for the evening was Rev. Douglas McEdwards, pastor of the Williamstown Methodist Church, who in his dynamic way expressed the value of facing life with a smile. The senior class president, Danny Desvaux, expressed the appreciation of the class for the entertainment of the evening. After several short speeches from other guests, the meeting was closed with prayer. The chapter room was displayed with the class colors of maroon and gold with the motto Second To None. Red roses, the class flower, formed the centerpiece. Refreshments of ice cream, cake, punch and coffee were served. The tables were dec- orated with replicas of graduates in caps and gowns. At the Capitol we registered by our district. Then we started on our tour of the Capitol at 9:00. Inside the Capitol we visited the first and second floors. We saw the murals, which are paintings of the history of Missouri. Inside the Governor's Reception we saw the seals of every state with the Missouri seal in the center. We visited the office of Hashel Holman, the state auditor, who told us about his office. Inside his office are the pictures of all the state auditors up to his time. Since the Senate and House weren't in session, we visited both galleries. We were told about the electric voting system in the House. The Senate gallery is the best equipped in the United States. Some interesting facts about the Capitol are that it was started to be built in 1914 and was first occupied in 1918. It cost approximately four and a half million dollars to build. Right now there is some construction work being done to the front steps that will cost about as much as the Capitol did. Next, we visited the Governor's Mansion. We were greeted by Mrs. Heames at the mansion. The building con- sists of twenty-seven rooms. Much of the furniture is hand carved. Inside the building were the paintings of all the governor's wives. The picture of Mrs. Heames wasn't up yet. The Governor's Mansion was built in 1871 and cost fifty thousand dollars. It has been the home of twenty-seven First Families. We then visited the Missouri Supreme Court Building, which was built in 1905-06. Seven judges act as a single court. Cases appealed through the line of courts of the state come to the Supreme Court. Next on the list was the Supreme Court Library. The building has over 70,000 volumes. There are several an- cient books in the library to find facts for cases. We ate lunch at the Governor's Hotel. The lunch consisted of ham, a potato, a salad, and pie. Some singers from Jefferson City entertained us. Governor Heames gave a talk about education, while Haskel Holman and James Kirkpatrick also gave talks. Estil Fretwell SCHEMPPS CAFE EDINA, MISSOURI CANTON LUMBER CO. Kenneth Allan and Mrs. Allan, and his Board of Education members: Richard Howe, president; Don Sykes, Robert Ayers, Jr., Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Schlepphorst, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jonney, Canton, and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Briscoe, board member from Williamstown, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hyrley, physical education and health teacher in Canton High school. Besides thePTA members, many people from the community were present including Mrs. Lela Lemmon, lunch room supervisor, and Mr. Joe Danforth, custodian, and Mrs. Danforth. Speaker of the evening was Joseph P. Dolan, heod of the Division of Health and Physical Education at North- east Missouri State College in Kirksville. Mr. Dolan is a favorite speaker in the Williamstown community. Of course, the most distinguished ones present, were Mr. Wheeler's many athletes. Danny Desvaux was the lone senior on the ball club, but he mode his presence felt. He was the team leader, and a very consistent scorer and rebounder. Outside of these accomp- lishments he mode the all-tourney team in the Lewistown tournament. Danny is also a leoder off the court, as he is the class president. For these reasons the seniors are very proud of Danny. A tribute to Danny: You're the best. Mary Lou Howard will be sorely missed next year. If you doubt this, ask the other members of the varsity girls basketball team. Mary Lou, a guard, was a regular for three sea- sons. She played good defense and was superb re- bounder. She also knew how to get the ball to the forwards. Since Mary Lou was the only senior lost, the team will not lose but one member. But what a member! The seniors are proud of Mary Lou's accomplish- ments. To her they also pay a tribute. You have our respect.
