But that is just exactly where you belong! No matter what our project was, you were there with us. Without your guidance and help, the past four years would have been an impossibility. With deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude for the educational opportunities you have offered us, how thankful we are! And how proud we are to dedicate our 1960 Hornet to you! - THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1960 Our JJarents HOME GAS SERVICE L. P. Gas and Appliances Kahoka Missouri At this moment let us c:::he: - ij sB July left us - one who for a number of years had put much tireless effort into the well-being of our school. Always shall we cher- ish the remembrance of the many ways Oscar Lem- mon tried to help us. Forever shall we remember the many kindnesses he always bestowed upon the little children, who loved him. He was a very care- ful, immaculate, considerate janitor who put every moment of his life into our school for the pupils, the teachers, as well as the whole community. These few words of remembrance are but a small token of the many ways in which he helped us all. How we miss him! WCE's r°UrPt°gr znto n Market Ssive Gro, In the year of 1948 six first graders left their mothers and hurried off to school. These six first graders, frightened, but brave, opened the big door of the school house and slowly sneaked Inside. The older children helped them out and showed them which room to go to. There Miss Mabel waited with open arms to welcome them. After the bell rang, they were introduced to one another. The class members were Larry Hudnut, Richard Dean Fretwell. Jimmy Hudnut, Karen Raleigh, Brian LeDoux and Joyce Gosney. In the fall of 1949 we assembled together as second graders. We were very happy to see the new students, Mary Ruth Allison, Janet Boecker and Vera Olean Welker. On September the first in 1950 we assembled again to find some more new members. They were Wanda Lou Allison, James Shrum and Karen Wallace from St. Louis. In 1951, we again hurried off to school, but were sad because we had lost our teacher, Miss Mabel. Mrs. Norma Wilkening was our teacher. We now had lost Karen Wallace, James Shrum and Richard Dean Fretwell. In the last semester we lost our teacher and received a new instructor. Mrs. Shirley MacDaniels. As fifth graders in 1952 our class enrollment was the same, but we had a new teacher, Mrs. Roberta Ewing. We were now in the sixth grade in the fall of 1953 with Mr. John Ewing our pilot. This year we gained a new student, Frank Muller from St. Patrick, Missouri. The next year we came back to bid the grfde school farewell. We gained this year Marjorie Ritter and Elaine Hollowell. The class enrollment was now nine with Mary Frances Olson as teacher. In the fall of 1956, we green freshmen began climbing the long flight of stairs which wouldn't be completed until 1960. Appearing before us were our teachers with some enrollment cards. Our superintendent, Mr. Hill, required our trembling fingers to re- cord our classes for the year. This year we had lost one of our classmates, Marjorie Ritter. The instructors for the year were Mr. Bowen, Mrs. Gould, Mr. Shirey and Mr. Hayworth. As sophomores we assembled together with the class enrollment the same as fresh- men. Our highlights for the year were for each classmate to have a surprise birthday. When each classmate had a sixteenth birthday, we had a party for him or her. This year we had a new teacher, Mr. Stevenson. As juniors we again hurried to school. This year we had a new teacher, Mr. Goetz. Our junior and senior prom was our big event. We had it at the Mark Twain Hotel at Hannibal. Our class enrollment was the same, but Joyce had now become Mrs. Robert D. Murphy. This year we had lost one of our classmates, Mary Ruth Allison, now Mrs. Michael K. Hud- nut. Our class enrollment now was two boys and five girls with Janet Boecker as Mrs. David Lillard. The last semester we gained back Mary Ruth Hudnut. New faculty mem bers this year were Mrs. Ferguson and Mr. Van Meter. In the spring of 1960 our twelve years were finally drawing to a close. Only three members went twelve years at Wil- liamstown. They were Larry Hudnut, Jimmy Hudnut and Joyce Murphy. We shall always remember these twelve years together, along with all of the fun and work we had. Now, we are ready for the first step into the wide world which will be- come our future. - Mary R. Hudnut - Jimmy Hudnut STANDARD OIL COMPANY Canton JJoem The class of '60 soon embarks upon the Waves of destiny. What lies ahead? Let's store some memories ere we go and hope These friendships never fade, But grow instead. Our class is small, our hearts are big, we've Many personalities; In fact, we've eight! Our hats are off to Vera who had won a most Important fight - She's lost some weight! There's always one - a joy to teach but whom The class regards with awe. It's Joyce, the brain. Then there's the winsome little Miss whose ways Have won her many friends; Who - but Elaine? The boys are in minority; 'tis bad and even Worse when one Plays hard to get; Larry’s quips are irresistible; we laugh at everything He says. You'll guess him yet. The shorter one is quiet like; Jim's grin is Pleasant; he's okay; It's Wanda, the industrious one, next come to Mind - she's pinned her hopes onto a star. You all remember Janet who when Things got rough in basketball. Her temper soared. And Mary Ruth - We're glad she's back. We Missed her pranks. Now all are back. Let's climb aboard. Sail on. O ship of state, sail on! Just one short trip and then we'll all Be on our own; For many a storm will rend the sails Before the Captain up above Shall call us home. - Vera Olean Welker M. F. A. INSURANCE - Janet Marie Lillard Mr. Dorsey Williams town, Missouri cS. emor emones As we stop to ponder over the many memories we, as classmates, have collected over our four years together, we can only recall those things which in some way or other have brought us closer to graduation night. I can sincerely say that I believe our class has been one of the closest in many years, not only with one another, but with our sponsor, Mrs. Gould, for Mrs. Gould has guided and helped us over four years of stones and stubbles. As we start with our freshman year, we recall our first day of high school - our regis- tration - our fright as we entered our first class. In October of 1956, we held our first class party in high school. Rufus, who has taken us on many excursions since, was our driver. We enjoyed a picnic supper and a show in Canton. Everyone would have had to eat with his fingers, if Mrs. Gould hadn't come to our rescue by taking extra silverware for forgetful students. Joyce Gosney, a class member, made a trip to Jefferson City on the Sophomore Pil- grimage. Our first class-celebrated sixteenth birthday party was held for Janet Boecker to her complete astonishment. The next memorable party was held in the Welker home in honor of Vera Olean. Fun wasn't fun until the punch was poured! In January, the class members gathered at the Gllvia Hudnut home to seek Larry out and bring him to die schoolhouse to celebrate his birthday. We shall never forget the laughter and humorous remarks as Larry opened his gifts in the lunch room. February, Mary Allison’s was celebrated in her home. It turned out to be a hen party. Joyce Gosney celebrated her birthday in March at her home. Angel food cake served as a memoir from this party as everyone kidded her about how much she had eaten. Elaine Hollowell’s birthday was celebrated in May. We had a picnic supper in the Keokuk park and afterwards went shopping and to a show. Mrs. Gould's birthday was celebrated in November by attending a show in Canton. In February, Mrs. Gould sponsored a surprise party for Rufus because of the many places he had taken us. Our junior-senior banquet was held in Hannibal. This year our class members chose our class rings, and were pleasantly surprised when they arrived in October. In December, we celebrated Jimmy Hudnut’s birthday in his home. We all snapped his picture as he tried to open his gifts. January, Wanda Allison’s surprise birthday party was held in her home. That long-awaited senior year has proved to be a busy one for all of us. Our class play, Grandad Goes Wild was given in November. While preparing for our play, we appeared on TV to advertise it and made a tour of some of die business establishments in Quincy which were in some way interesting and educational to our publications class. This year the seniors sponsored freshman initiation, which proved to be a night of fun and laughter. During the months of April and May, the seniors were flocked with activities. On April 5, the seniors visited Hannibal-LaGrange College and on April 12, we were guests of Kirksville College. The seniors published our annual, The Hornet, which took much time and effort. Of course, there were always seniors' pictures, school pictures for the yearbook, an- nouncements and flowers to attend to. The seniors were entertained by the juniors at Keokuk for their banquet this year. The Masons also entertained us seniors with a banquet in April. The senior trip to New Orleans and Mississippi involved much planning and prepara- tion by the seniors, even more than was anticipated. The pie supper sponsored by us seniors was held on May 5. At last, on May 8, the first of our big nights was here. It was baccalaureate nigfrt, and our speaker was Rev. Smith from Kirksville. On May 17, our commencement night came, and Lee Anthony from Quincy gave our very entertaining speech. So, our high school days were o'er, our very busy, memorable, high school days. - Joyce Murphy GUTTING FUNERAL HOME Lady Assistant on All Cases Day and Night Free Chapel Service and Homelike Superior Ambulance Service Nothing Left Undone - Prices Conservative Kahoka Phone 17 Missouri JJropnecu In the year 1972 where will our senior class members be? What will they be doing? As graduation approaches, let us look into our crystal ball and see. First, coming into view is Larry Hudnut. Larry has really left his mark on this world. He has become an Air Force pilot and is working on experimental rockets. Next Monday is his greatly publicized rocket take-off for Mars. Having reached the moon, Larry is already a world news figure. Mary Hudnut has much to be proud of. She is appearing now in the Metropolitan Opera House. Her lovely soprano voice is the product of much training and much hap- piness to her loving husband, Mike, and their twin sons. One of the happiest married women of our class turned out to be Elaine Hollowell. Elaine married her high school sweetheart right after graduation. She and her husband are living in Australia where he is stationed in the Army, his career. Jimmie Hudnut, a favorite member of the class, is not without fame. Jim is open- ing his fourth annual dairy show which is held on his own six hundred acre farm. Jim and his sweet wife now have five children. We now and then see Vera Welker when she comes home for vacation. Vera is modeling clothes for Hollywood stars, and doesn't get to come home very often. But when she does, she is the same sweet Vera. None of the fame has changed that. Vera is still single, for since leaving her sweetheart in Williamstown, Vera hasn't been able to find true happiness. A word now about Wanda Allison, another classmate. Wanda is now in New York City. We are all very proud of her for being so brave. Wanda is the head of the govern- ment’s Women Into Space” project, and will leave next Monday for Mats. It seems there was another classmate going, too??? Joyce Murphy is living with her husband, son and daughter, on their five hundred acre farm near here. Joyce is teaching school, while her husband runs the ranch. Janet Lillard is living with David in Canton. They have a very nice home and David is working up to a high position in his plant. David and Janet are the proud parents of three fine children. Now, we escape from dreamland and go back into reality. Eventually, in the future, we may look back on our prophecy and see how far our classmates have come. - Joyce Murphy - Larry Hudnut COUNTY COLLECTOR Charles Little - Elizabeth Tieman Monticello nii's litOi js IHPLciii- IOIOK 1 )fien We 1 )ere }ouna IL Oo o u J'tem ein be • ? Clerk Monticello 7.)i Ii a ms town 7e ac fi er 7 ad 7 no ay A of C nouyA on 7irst ffo (Special to Quincy Herald-Whig) ENOUGH, Mo., was enough for Miss Mabel Walker, one of Williamstown's best known teacher-citizens. It was at Enough, a town of 20 persons in Iron County, where Miss Mabel had her first teaching assignment. But it didn't satisfy her - it only sharpened her appetite for teaching. Miss Mabel, a primary teacher at Williamstown for many years, received her first job at Jennings school in Enough. She was graduated from Kahoka High school in 1926 with a state teaching certificate after receiving her teacher-training from Mrs. Edna L. Seyb. Miss Mabel also attended Ballard High school and Pleasant Hill rural school in Clark County. In the late summer of 1926, the novice teacher caught a train to Ironton and then went to Enough, where she was told the school house was up the holler a piece. She found Jennings school completely surrounded by woods in the virgin Ozark foothills. Living facilities were inadequate in Enough and Miss Mabel often had to cover her bed with a raincoat to keep it dry when it rained. In February, the Jennings school district ran short of funds. Miss Mabel caught a train to her home only after a ride with a truck driver hauling a load of livestock to St. Louis. Miss Mabel, still teaching the first grades in Williamstown. lives with her father, Milt Walker, in Williamstown's newest house. She is the Sunday School teacher of the high school group at the Christian church and is the sponsor of Christian Endeavor. Miss Mabel is a charter member of the Williamstown P. T. A. She was honored only recently at a P. T. A. meeting attended by a large crowd in- cluding nearly 60 of her former pupils. Olen Fretwell, master of ceremonies, featured her in a program patterned after This Is Your Life, “ and her brother, Cecil, and wife; her sister, Eleanor Nichols, and husband; and an entire family of her former primary grade students, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Welker and their children, Larry, Bobbie and Jackie. Charlie Welker, one of Miss Mabel's oldest pupils, was unable to attend because of illness. Miss Mabel was presented gifts from her many friends. - Mrs. Beulah Gould FARMERS' SUPPLY, La Belle T1EMANN CONOCO STATION, La Grange ISOM JEWELRY. May 20, 1960 Mrs. Gould: I speak on behalf of the Williamstown PTA to say that often words are inadequate to fully ex- press the deep feelings of our hearts and such is true when we attempt to convey to you our thanks and appreciation for the many years of faithful service to our PTA. In memory we go back to the long hours you freely gave in directing our annual PTA shows, the interest you demonstrated by regular attendance at the meetings and the full cooperation we received in every undertaking of the organization. Missouri Congress of Parents-Teachers has a means of helping us to thank you through a State Life Time Membership. It is an honor and a living memorial accorded an outstanding Parent- Teacher member and recognizes his meritorious service. It is an honorary membership only. The fee for this honor is a contribution to the education of a Missouri student and the furtherance of the state work. It is divided equally between the Caroline B. Ulman student loan and the scholarship fund and the extension fund. So it is our pleasure to award to you today this our first State Life Membership and with it a PTA pin and die attractive acorn guard, a membership card, and a ten-year subscription to Missouri Parent Teacher. We hope you will wear this pin proudly and that it will serve as a reminder of your service in this school with the Teachers and Parents to promote all the objectives of PTA, and may it express to you the Love and Gratitude of our hearts. May God continue to bless your efforts as you seek to promote the welfare of children wherever you are. WILLIAMSTOWN PTA Mrs. Rufus Nelson, President GAMBLES.
