CDedication We, the seniors of 1956-1957 proudly dedicate our school annual to the one- hundredth year of Williams town. Our com-' munity has always contributed to the wel- fare of this school. To show our appreci- ation we dedicate these following para- graphs to Williamstown. The village of Williamstown was laid off by Minus Williams, September 29, 1856. The surveyor was J. P. Mitchell. The site was well chosen, situated on the old Canton, Monticello, and Memphis State road, in the center of an unsur- passed farming region. When the war came on, the place was little more than a small hamlet with but one or two stores and perhaps a dozen houses. The union element predomi- nated very largely in the neighborhood, and in the summer of 1861 a strong com- pany of home guards was organized there. Although without a railroad, and with- out reasonable prospects of any, the vil- lage increased after the war in proportion to the development of the country. In February, 1874, Aaron Martin laid off an addition, and in March following Lewis McClain platted another; both were soon occupied. In 1881, the population was two hundred eighty; it was estimated in 1887 to be about four hundred, more or less. Considerable business was trans- acted, and the village had an excellent reputation as a trading point. One of the institutions connected with the village, and which had given it much favorahle notoriety, was the Williamstown Fair Association, which was organized years since, and was in continuous suc- cessful operation for some time. The as- sociation owned well appointed grounds and buildings, which is now the present farm of Chester Ewart. Williamstown was appropriately located fcr the purpose of the association, and the fairs were pat- ronized by exhibitors and spectators from the counties of Lewis, Knox, Clark, and Scotland, and even from localities more remote. The only railroad near Williamstown was the Canton and Bloomfield, which never got farther than Bunker Hill. It was to run from Canton to Bloomfield, Iowa. The railroad was started in 1860. Cars for it were brought in by steamboat up the Mississippi. A train actually ran from the northern part of Canton to Bunker Hill. The churches of Williamstown were Southern Baptist, Catholic, Northern Methodist, and Christian. The Providence Baptist Church was or- ganized in 1847 by Elders John Rowe, Jeremiah Lillard, and Jesse Ford and their wives who met in what is known as the Liberty Schoolhouse which stood about three-quarters of a mile northeast of where the present building is located. The first pastor was John Rowe; first deacon, Jeremiah Lillard; first clerk, Jesse Ford; first treasurer, Ruben Nichols. In 1853 the first church was built, but was torn down and another one completed by 1871. Another church was built in 1911, which still stands to the present day. The first Sunday School was organized in 1889. By interviewing the present residents of Williamstown, we have acquired in- formation as to the whereabouts of some of the business houses of Williamstown. There were three hotels in Williams- town—one was owned by Fred Carlin, the second by Mr. Cecil, and the third by Mary Hively. The first post office was run by Mason Bowen in his home, now where Roy Ridgley's residence stands. Another was run by A. W. Selway, the present resi- dence of Selway's Store. There were two banks in Williamstown, one called the Farmers Exchange Bank and the other was called the Williamstown Bank. Williamstown was a growing town, and had many places of business that brought in much trade far the town. There were blacksmith shops, grocery stores, millinery stores, drug stores and other small stores that helped the community to prosper. 2 JEAN LASSWELL Valedictorian........................4 Basketball....................1,2,3,4 Softball.......................1,2,3 Girls'Glee Club.............1,2,3,4 Sextette.......................2,3,4 Trio.................................2 Triple Trio..........................3 Quartette............................4 Kirksvllle Sextette..................4 Kirksvllle Quartette.............A Kirksvllle Glee Club.................4 Spanish, Kirksvllle..................3 Theme Writing, Kirksvllle............3 Act Your Age .......................3 Everybody's Getting Married . . .2 Shoot the Works ....................1 Buzzer Staff Editor..................4 Yearbook Staff Editor................4 Girls' State.........................3 Student Council..................1 Class Secretary..................2 Class Treasurer..................3 Class Reporter.......................4 MARY SCHORK Salutatori an.....................4 Basketball..................1,2,3,4 Captain of Basketball Team .... 4 Softball Pep Squad Girls' Glee Club. . . We hope to be remembered through the years As the kids who conquered all our fears. Take Bob, a very merry guy. Who'll always smile when you pass by. Now Darryl, a strong, friendly chap. At basketball he was a snap. Wanda Beryl, a merry soul, Had a heart of purest gold. Take Jean who's always on the ball And was very well liked by all. There's Mary, who in every way Brought light into each dreary day, Ellen had energy and go power And is ready for fun at any hour. Last is Sarah, the (quiet?) one But who is yet alot of fun. This is the seniors of '57 Whom we hope will go to Heaven. Sarah Nichols We, the seniors of Williamstown high school 1956-57, being of sound mind and good body hereby will the following: I, Wanda Beryl Tripp, will my laughing ways to Joyce Boecker. Use them well, Joyce. I, Mary Schork, will my flirting ways to Janice Hudnut. Be careful, Janice. I, Viva Ellen Nichols, will the scar on my nose to Stella Ellison. What are you go- ing to do with it now, Stella? I, Sarah Nichols, will my black hair to Wanda Coons. Don't get it gray as I did, Wanda. I, Jean Lasswell, will my steady mind to Lavon Lemmon in case she might need it. Take care of it, Lavon. I, Darryl Ridgely, will my basketball suit to Dickie Brown. You'll have to grow this summer, Dick. I, Robert Murphy, will my teasing ways to Mike Ellison. Don't be too mischievous with them, Mike. The senior class wills their chewing gum wrappers to Mr. Lemmon. We will our places in study hall to those who get there first. We, the seniors of 1956-57, will all our headaches over our lessons back to the teachers. -Ellen Nichols and Bob Murphy da ss (3 (tstory In September of 1953 seven freshmen. In an energetic mood, journ- eyed up the steps of WHS to start one of four years of high school. What was to be before us for those four years, we knew not. The seven fresh- men then were: Mary Schork, Wanda Tripp, Ellen Nichols, Sarah Nichols, Jean Lasswell, Darryl Ridgely, and Robert Murphy. As we light-heartedly took seats In the study hall with other more experienced upperclassmen, we discovered we were to have five teachers for that school year. Those teachers were: Mr. Louis LeDoux (superintendent), Mrs. Beulah Gould, Mr. Jack Ross, Mr. Corwin Bowen, and Mr. John Moore. Mr. Moore was our class sponsor that year. We found that year to hold a stunning experience for each and all concerned. At the end of the year we found our treasury to consist of a meager sum of $.07. Surprisingly enough we all survived our first year of high school and the summer following. September found us back in the familiar school rooms in places especially reserved for us. We neither lost nor gained pupils that year, but some of our teachers were new teachers that year. They were: Mr. Woodrow Hill (superintendent). Miss Rose Harris, Mr. Frank Humphrey, Mrs. Beulah Gould, and Mr. John Moore. This year we were noted appropriately as being the usual silly sophomores. The next year, as Jolly Juniors, we became a larger class by the addition of one person, Imogene Ritter. Our teachers for this year were: Mr. Hill, Mrs. Gould, Mr. Reed, Mr. Kyle Hayworth, and Mr. Bowen. This year was full of happenings which keep a junior busy. Our play, Junior-senior banquet, etc., were each experiences we all enjoyed. Imogene Ritter left us at the end of the year. The senior year, our last year, makes us fully aware that the three preceding years and the last one shall be days we shall not soon forget. There are too many memories made in high school for us to forget. We have discovered this year that we have twice as many things to do which all makes the senior year so interesting. Our class play, Junior-senior banquet, the senior trip and other exciting events are all fond memories to us all at Williamstown high school. ■Jean Lasswell eia ss [Prophecy What has become of our classmates was our question that day In 1967, when we wandered Into the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York where we, the 1957 seniors, were to hold a reunion. Who should we meet first, but Jean Lasswell, who is a renowned scientist at the Atomic Energy Plant at Oakridge, Tennessee. Jean tells us that she is happily married to the owner of the plant. Alas, but could this be Sarah Nichols coming down the hall? Sarah was mar- ried just out of high school, but our little Sarah is not infamous. Sarah has made her mark in the literary world by writing many famous poems, Almost as good as Longfellow's, so some say. Who could that funny man be, but our own class clown. Bob Murphy, the second Red Skelton. Bob is prospering well as a comedian with the help of his sweet wife. We met Ellen Nichols Just at the elevator door. She tells us that she mar- ried a multi-millionaire whom she met at college. Ellen has just gotten back from a cruise on her yacht to Cuba. She had her husband and child with her. And there is Mary Schork. Mary is tops in the dress designing field. She has toured England, France , and other countries and Just recently, Mary has received high credit for her latest design. It was a silver sheath dress. We find Wanda Tripp quite at home in New York, as she is editor of Charm Magazine. Wanda tells us that she is engaged to a jet pilot. Last, but not least, is Darryl Ridgely, who is just out of the Air Force and looking for a wife. He says that he never could make up his mind about women. ----Mary Schork and Wanda Tripp 8 MR.
