CLASS HISTORY In the Autumn of 1943 Kenneth Selway, Murle Durbin, Marjorie Lill - ard, Mable Nichols, Doris English,-Veda Hawkins, Margaret Bevans, Imo- gene Joy and Jackie McClain enrolled in the Freshman Class of WHS with the following teachers: Louis LeDoux, Maxine Walker and Faith Sauhders. On Sept. 2 at 9 o’clock appearing before us with suspicious looking en- rollment cards was our Supt. requiring our trembling fingers to record our previous school records on them. It was during this ordeal that our Supt. made the following consoling statement: “Don’t look so scared, there has never been anyone killed yet in high school.” We respondeo by smiling faintly and we felt somewhat re- lieved I We even began to relax a little and look around. We felt about back to normal again and then a shattering of the stillness with a clang — the bell! Then appearing before us was a tall heavy set, red-haired tea- cher who called him-self Mr. Carney. He gave us one disgusted look and with a sigh of relief said, “I’m not going to be your English teacher, af- ter all. A Maxine Walker will be here to take over tomorrow.” Soon after that we had our first conference with Miss Saunders. After meeting all our teachers and taking a look into the different rooms that was about all for our first day. We started home feeling so green we were anxious for tomorrow to come so we could start learning something. It seemed that we kept this attitude .throughout the year, and needless to say we really did accomplish things. Why, even four of us were xnvitca to attend the Junior-Senior Banquet that year. The great sorrow in our Freshman Year was that we lost Veda Hawkins. Then we became Snappy Sophomores. We were very sorry to lose Murle Durbin but happy to gain Rose LaVelle toward the end of the year. As Sophomores we felt very important. We were better acquainted with high school activities. The most of we Sophomores were happy to be in the Jr. play, “Betty Jane from Punkin Lane.” We entered our Jr. year with 8 members. We lost Rose LaVelle during the year. We gained Lucille Smith, Louise Dean, and Leola Lill- ard for a short time. We had the Jr. Play “He COULDN’T Marry Five.” We all were athletic enough to become first team on the Basketball Squad. Some of us were chosen to taxe part in the Sr. Play that vear. We gave the Jr. it Sr. Banquet St Prom on Tuesday May 7. We enrolled our Senior Year at WHS as a class of 1 boy and 5 girls. We had lost (husbands had gained) Doris English, Jackie McClain and Lucille Smith. Leola Lillard was again with us here. Tms proved to be the year of great happenings---Mable’s marriage, Imogen 's presidency to the Council, Marjorie’s famous public speaking, Margaret's Super Speeding in typing, Kenneth’s excellent patience in getting along with the Senior Gi- rls and Leola’s completing high school work.
