Last year the School of Nursing celebrated its 100th year anniversary. We the 101st graduating class, are proud to be part of a legend ... a legend that lives on. The Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing Presents the 1984 OAK Williamsport, Pennsylvania 177013198 Dedication As we, the class of 1984, passed through our freshmen, junior, and senior years, we came to know the housemothers as much more than the ladies at the desk. Their smiling faces at the end of a weary day; their listening ears when we had something to complain about; their comforting voice when we felt down; and their time when we just wanted to sit and talk has made them very special to us. They became our friends, and as we will miss all our friends here at W.H.S.N., we will also miss them. With gratitude, we dedicate our year- book to the housemothers — Mrs. C, Dolly, Minnie, Judy, and Helen. Right: Mrs. Helen McCarty, Mrs. Dolly Bol- linger, and Mrs. Gladys Cellini Lower right: Mrs. Minnie Ulmer and Mrs. Judy Plankenhorn Below: Residence Director Mrs. Cellini at front desk. • ; ??. Left: Chow Time Below: Joyce Barwicki, Kim Shurock and Kim Moyer at our own gingerbread house. As we approach the end of our nursing education, we take the time to recognize our families and friends for the love and support they have given us over the past three years. Their patience and understanding when we wanted to be with them but had to study showed us that they were be- hind us. The many phone calls we made and letters we sent that were answered with Hang in there — we know you can do it. kept us strug- gling to make it through another year. Now as we prepare to begin our nursing careers, we would like to thank all of you and let you know that we couldn ' t have made it without you. Oak Remembers The first graduate of the Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing, then called the Williamsport Hospital train- ing School for Nurses, was Alta J. King. She received her diploma in 1 884. In 1 889, there were only seven graduates compared to today ' s thirty-six graduates. The first male graduate was Dave Ranck. He graduated in 1964. right: students in rehab, below: Pediatrics The early uniform was ankle length with ruffles and starched removable collar, but this was changed in 1948 to a blue and white pinafore with a starched two piece apron. There have been many changes in the school. Do you remember when the school ' s tuition was only $350.00 in 1942? Today the tuition is $1 1,100.00. At one time the comple- tion of the nursing program took a short fifteen months of training, but now it takes three years to gain the knowledge of a registered nurse. Also, at one time, no married female or male students or students with chil- dren were allowed. Now there is no discrimination for entrance into the school, in fact, there are ten male stu- dents enrolled. upper right: Students enjoying chemistry Cindy Reigle and Lora Hazel relaxing during their free time Aerial view of our hospital At times we may think we have it bad. At one time the students spent twelve to sixteen hours a day on clini- cal. Thankfully, that was reduced to eight hours a day. Also, there were mandatory study hours from seven to ten p.m. and lights out at ten p.m. with bedchecks. The year 1973 was very important for the school. First of all, the school was honored with the achievement of NLN accreditation. Also, the school had become affiliated with Lycoming College. above: trying it on for size eft: learning is never ending below: Karen and Kim — roommates THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1984 . . . . . . the legend lives on. Since our senior year began, we have witnessed changes such as coed visitation; our own keys to get in the residence building; three mandatory student organization meetings per year; and the starting of project 2000. When we were Freshmen, it seemed as though the days of being a senior were far in the distance. But as we gained much valuable experience, we discovered that our Senior year used that knowledge and experience as a foundation. Our senior year has been a time for learning and expand- ing our role as nurses. Now as we leave as graduates, we will continue to grow as professional nurses. In our Fresh- man year we take on nursing respon- sibilities and are challenged with learning new skills. As a class, we try to become more organized and spon- sor fundraisers to save money for graduation and the yearbook. As Juniors, we have made it through two years of increasingly dif- ficult assignments. We have raised funds to support our class projects and for graduation. We have become close friends with class members and faculty. Even though there have been many ups and downs , there has always been a friend willing to listen to our problems or wipe a tear away from our cheeks. We have matured into responsible and accountable adults, who are willing to give and care. At times we feel that if we take one more step, do one more paper or read one more page, we may give up. WE HAVE MADE IT! We have many memories to share, remember and love. Even though some of us have failed and some of us have succeeded — we have all grown to be better individuals. Although our paths may never cross again, the memories of The Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing will always linger in our hearts. We . . . the legend . . . will always live on. God Bless and Good Luck, The Yearbook Staff 1984. 80
