Plato Time has flown by for us, showing us many experiences which will forever remain implanted in our minds. As we look back over the past three years, there has been one who has stayed by our side through happy and sometimes, sad times. By being understanding, generous of herself in time and effort, she has helped us to overcome many obstacles along with sharing in all our achievements. We dedicate our yearbook, The Oak, to one who is herself dedicated Mrs. Elizabeth D. Tomlinson. One example of her infinite generosity. With every hospital, there are those whose knowl- edge and effort afford us an organized and efficient hospital. Operating Room Instructor Operating Room Nursing Knife. The preparatory procedures are through. Three gowned people stand within a small room, a tense air hovering so prevalent that beads of perspi- ration cling to their brows. The drama of the oper- ating room scene has begun. Now to follow the case; to probe into the phenomena of the human body; to assist the surgeon in making the strain of the opera- tion less encompassing. The student nurse is ready. The operation runs smoothly. Her eyes and ears strain to assimilate the bits and pieces of concen- trated information that the surgeon mutters in his engrossed state of total thought. The last suture is clipped. The sponge and needle counts prove to be satisfactory. She breathes a long sigh of relief, and degloving, walks back to the lounge to await the beckon of the surgeon who will again take her on a guided tour of the awesome trails of the human body. [t has been a long day! Sterilization of instruments on 11-7. Miss Wolfe demonstrates equipment. 64 Counting sterile instruments. Sandy goes to class. New students in the O.R. Learning thorough comprehensive care. George! And they think it ' s sunburn! 65 Emergency Room Nursing How often have we encountered the flashing red lights of an ambulance swiftly making its way to the hospital. It is the Emergency Room that so effi- ciently and skillfully meet the first basic and critical needs of the patient. It is here also where several hundred people come every week to receive treatment and medical coun- seling. Emergency Room experience allows the student to develop skill and efficiency in emergency and disaster situations. Mrs. Betty Worthington, R.N. , B.S., Medical Surgical Mrs. Hoffman orients student to the Emergency Room. Clinic offers aid to the out-patient. Dr. Blumberg examines a child in Well Baby Clinic. I.V. Team 66 Admission prodecure in Emergency Room is not always this painless. Physical Medicine experience is a part of our training for rehabilitation. We also help with difficult X-ray prodecures. Inhalation Therapy is the breath of life. Radioisotope is interesting and helpful in diagnosis of patients. Miss Pongrazzi cleans the wound before the doctor sutures it. 67 Mrs. Rosemary Sutliff, R.N., B.S. Isolation Instructor What do you mean we ' re contaminated? Isolation Nursing Oh, those insidious invisible microbes! Who knows where they lurk; Maybe next to the door; or between the bed sheets. FRIGHT is a perfect description of our initial reaction upon entering our isolation specialty. But alas, through our concurrent training in the class- room and its practical application on the clinical unit, we finally evolved to fear no germ alive. Let us at ' em, is the cry of the student nurse who has finished her rewarding and informative stint in the communicable disease aspect of nursing. NOW try and get out, you nasty little bugs! No you don ' t test it with your finger. 68 Diet Therapy Nursing Yes sir, I will personally see that you get coffee for your three meals, is a cry more than faintly reminiscent of our nursing-correlated dietary experi- ence. Never fully realizing the cardinal importance of the dietary therapy in the hospital setting, the stu- dent nurse now finds that there are sundry jobs consuming her total day. Classes, patient teaching and assisting in the tabulation of menus constitute the bulk of this interesting specialty, giving the student nurse a we 11- needed lapse from the grind of medical- surgical nursing. I Mrs. Elizabeth Tomlinson, B.S., A.D.A., Diet Therapy Instructor Diet Therapy class with the juniors. Are you sure you want this? Busy thinking up new foods. Efficiency and organization to a different aspect of total medical team nursing were acquired here in three short months of copious training. The end result? Martin Buxbaum We as student nurses all had the opportunity of three months experience in the field of Obstetric Nursing, including labor and delivery, nursery, post-partum and clinic. Mixed feelings of joy, wonderment and empathy overcome us as we attended the patient in labor and then, after wheeling her into the delivery room, witnessed and assisted in the miracle of birth. They are sons and daughters of life ' s longing for itself. Kahlil Gibran The trust in a child ' s eyes, the laughter on tiny faces, and the many tears shed on the way to re- covery are unforgettable parts of our learning ex- periences in the nursing of children. In caring for these children we have gained valuable experiences not only as nurses but as young men and women who will sowieday, be caring for children of our own. Mrs. Ann L. Stopper, R.N., B. S. Choose with care your troubles great for they can accumulate and like pounds of i Lathers- -crush you with their weight. Martin Buxbaum Throughout our entire training we dealt with physical- aches, pains and complaints of our patients. But during our psychiatric affiliation we saw the other aspect--the anxieties, depressions, elations, and frustrations. In these three short months we learned more about human nature and ourselves than we ever knew. With this knowledge we grew to be- come a more empathetic, more tolerant, and a much more understanding individual. Doctors welcome students ' questions on care of the mentally ill patient. Student Government The clash of knitting needles gives rise to our monthly student government meeting. Regardless of busy hands, student government is a vital part of our lives right now. It is an organization whereby we can become involved-with ourselves, our school, and our career. It is a gathering where all three classes meet and join hands for progress. What ' s the key word? Definition: Our Chorus Chorus is one extracurricular activity that not everyone can belong to. You need special require- ments: interest, and appreciation of music, and a funloving attitude. The combination of these three has brought many people together through song. It continues to do so every year at the Candlelight Service and Spring Concert. The various meetings include such things as: buzz sessions, singspirations, Bible studies, special speakers, picnics and campouts. Through Nurses ' Christian Fellowship the student nurse is better able to understand her own beliefs and become a more rounded individual. Thusly, she gains an understanding of how to be more sensitive to the spiritual and emotional needs of her patients. Planning a meeting . . fs ffi fb SEATED, D. Frei, P. Hanna, J. Coup, J. Asby, R.
