The Class Of 1968 Presents The OAK Williamsport Hospital School Of Nursing Williamsport, Pennsylvania - Foreword . . . luid movements of steadfast hands evolve to firmly grasp the ultimate rung on a ladder of educational refine- ment. In three short years, adroit tolls have miraculously surmounted their ponderous ways, rising to a state of stanch perceptivity. Resoluteness has received its attribution; for the turbu- lent waters have temporarily lulled into placid stagnancy, with the nimble and incisive hands slipping obscurely into a secularly baffling game known as life Striking the world a thundering blow, they grab a fruitful position in its irreparable maze. The game wanes on, but victory is at hand; time cumulatively progresses as lithe fingers tap a rhythmic reiteration of their patient vigil John R. Gillespie S. Mr. Knowlton giving the freshmen in- valuable knowledge in the anatomy and physiology of the cat. The basis of nursing fills our school with vast and sometimes uncomprehendable knowl- edge, quite essential to our goals as professional nurses. Through instruction, conferences, and clinical experience, we travel closer to our optimum aim; passing the state boards and taking our places in the realm of qualified professionals. Miss Sander explaining procedures to Miss Ogden. Mr. Hannen showing proficiency in taking a blood pressure, pressure . 58 Miss Hooks making rounds with Dr. Nelson. I ' ll bid . . . Dr. Ford discussing patient welfare with Mrs. Diltz and Miss Holt. Pretty does it! 59 Handicapped nurse prepares bed for new patient. One of the more pleasant jobs. PLEASE, open up. i ¥ For this, I had to get out of bed. 60 Miss Hyrina pre- paring medications. Boy, I could lie here all day! -a i r¥ - Mrs. Stopper discussing Clinitest procedure with Miss Stryker. Now, what should I chart about him today? 61 It takes two bags to keep these bugs inside. Boy is this outfit ever warm! Mrs. Haug explains cardiac monitor to students. m Students study new respirator. 62 ' To the boneyard, girls! Mr. Hanshaw explaining a radioisotope machine to Miss Bolir. Miss Rodgers in the Emergency Room questioning a newly arrived patient. ' hands off that sterile field. 63 SPECIALTIES Surgery We found ourselves participants in the drama belonging exclusively to operating room nursing, as our gloved hands learned to snap with precision the fine metal instruments into die surgeon ' s out- stretched palm. In addition to scrubbing in and circulating for operations, which provide ample opportunity to observe and learn the anatomical and physiologi- cal structures of die body, we have practice in setting up instruments for surgery. We also have experience in the recovery room, learning there the techniques of caring for the post-surgical pa- tients until sufficiently reacted to return to their rooms. 66 67 Obstetrics BIRTH! ! Never has there been a more mystical and exciting thing to behold. Care during labor and delivery provides the opportunity for forming warm, helping relationships with expectant parents. Through this, not only is knowledge acquired, but also a great satisfaction in knowing diat ours is the helping hand for one in need. Postpartum offers experience in caring for the mother and becoming acquainted with the family as a unit. In the nursery, we learn to observe and instruct the new mother in the areas of feed- ing, bathing, and dressing of her newborn. I-M5I ( jj 68 Pamela Metzger doing baby bath demonstration Going home. w (llir g F Class skit in Emergency childbirth. Newborn being dressed for home. 69 Pediatrics In Pediatrics, we enter the world of the young- ster. Those we care for range in age from infants through adolescents. Children are delightful and can teach us a great many things. The very ill child can mean sadness, but his stamina and will-power are re- freshing. All children are different, but each seems to possess built-in strength to accept his illness and to recover quickly. Through these youngsters, we gain a knowledge and understan ding of normal growth and develop- ment, the dynamics of childhood diseases, and a better understanding of the thoughts and actions of children. 70 4 m ■ Ar7 gMM i Miss Lasco explaining care of child in croupette. Wonder how many cards will come today! Miss Stahli feeding a child who has cleft lip and palate. Can you see anyone out there, Bruno? Dr. Vanderlin examining a child with the assistance from Mrs. O ' Mealy and Miss Metzger. 71 Psychiatry Mixed feelings of anxiety and eager anticipation accompany most of vis to the affiliation at Warren State Hospital for training and experience in the care of psychiatric patients, a most unique, fasci- nating, and challenging phase of the program. Classroom theory, in addition to clinical observa- tion and practice, provides the opportunity to strengthen the ability to comprehend and deal with many varieties of mental and emotional distur- bances. We return better equipped to recognize, understand, and interpret the numerous types of behavior and emotions exhibited by individuals, and realize that these skills are applicable and valuable to all areas of nursing. Although a portion of time must be consumed in study, leisure hours are devoted to forming new friendships and socializing with other affiliating students. The hospital provides much in the way of recreational equipment, and schedules several class activities. 72 Breaktime. Joyce Emick and Gloria Fantaski with Mrs. Adams in the library. Student Government The Student Government Association is the most important student-controlled organization, being a vital link between students and administration. This organization offers each of us the opportunity to express requests and ideas by channeling them through the proper authorities. Utilizing these privi- leges, the student and the school are so correlated as to bring about better relationships throughout our school . 78 Installation of Student Government OfficerS--Miss Roxann Renn, new first vice president, and Miss Lydabelle Hemans, outgoing president of student government. l W Student Government Advisors-- Miss Helen Lasco and Mrs. Sally B. The Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing is no exception, and presently we would like to pay tribute to all those who have done such an excellent job in making our internal government such a smooth- moving organization. SNAP provides the opportunity to become unified as student nurses in Pennsylva- nia, and above all, aids the individual ' s per- sonal growth and development. SNAP ' S re- wards and values are unlimited to those who seek them. 81 Nurses Christian Fellowship Nurses ' Christian Fellow- ship is an interdenominational group of fun and fellowship. To maintain and inspire spiritual growth, various ac- tivities are planned including Bible studies, singspirations, and campouts. Being able to meet as a group and discuss common problems enables us to give better care and fulfill the spiritual needs of patients. In NCF, through the help of God, we are able to face the future with courage and anticipation. j ■ « V k K |2a i. JtiU i ' I 2i fch m J . M V 82 Chorus From Bach, to Baez, to Broadway, the skillful hands of Mr. Robert Bowersox have directed the Williams- port Hospital Student Chorus in sheer enjoyment for all of us. Their singing for the November mass meeting, Christmas candlelight service and Spring Concert, was quite beautiful, and knowing that our fellow students ' efforts gave us these pleasant feelings of contentment was truly heart-warm- ing. 83 Freshman boys get initiated. 84 Our lives as student nurses include relaxing, times filled with fun and close friendships. If one would experience student travels through our residence, attend our various social events; one would see everything from water battles to talent shows, popcorn parties to student- faculty teas, or serious studying to watching a movie on television. We hope to demonstrate a variety of our experiences on the following few pages. 85 May Dance What a picture captures! 86 Seniors 87 Juniors 88 Freshmen 89 Graduation! ! What a long-awaited, serious and heartwarming time for the graduating class, their parents and all those making the feat possible. Long hours of study, hard work and three years of devotion are behind us. Times of distress and reward now receive their recompensation, as the opportunity to stand upon a stage and receive a nursing diploma becomes a reality. As we put on our white uniforms and walk down the aisle, we realize our long road of travel is completed. We came as students but we leave as graduates. In our hands we hold a diploma, a career and a great responsibility to ourselves and mankind. Look at us now. Quickly. You may never get a look at the children you once knew. 90 91 Our Friends Dr. A.
