From ln olvement Effective self-expression is one of the major goals all English pupils hope to attain. Denny Doebler Calzore, Zeftj strives for this achievement as he delivers a speech in his English IV class. of Self ,Expression Today, more than ever before, students are becom- ing directly involved with the moral issues that face them. Through school or outside activities, they con- tribute to beneficial projects. Through these projects such as giving blood or collecting for the needy, stu- dents show that they are aware of the many problems that exist and are willing to do something about them. Other conscientious efforts are the annual canned food drive and the Toys for Tots campaign. Students, whether Protestant, Catholic, or jewish, show their awareness through religious affiliated ac- tivities. Through their church or synagogue youth groups, students devote time and effort to the welfare of others. Folk masses, sponsored by many local churches, attract much student participation. By con- tributing their songs and musical talent, students bring warmth, intensity, and meaning to the services. Every year the junior and senior classes exercise their right to vote by electing their class officers, just as they will elect national leaders in the future. An- other exercise of moral freedom is the pledge of allegiance to the flag each morning in the homerooms. One of the biggest moral issues this year was our country's involvement in Viet Nam. A number of students observed the Viet Nam War Moratorium, and whether they wore black armbands or Tell It to Hanoi buttons, they expressed and upheld personal opinions. Awareness and involvement in the moral and social issues of today, both local and national, are generated by a majority of the student body when they share their views and ideas with others. if r 4 5 ra, -'-4 3. Students both for and against U. S. policy in Viet Nam aired their views.
