in ariou Form , Location Williamsport High School provides an environ- ment in which each student can find his own direc- tion and develop into a competent member of society. To find these directions as a competent member of society, the student must acquire the necessary skills to be an influential citizen, that is, one who appre- ciates all peoples, adapts to changes in society, prac- tices responsibility and enlightened citizenship, and cultivates interests and skills which employ his leisure time. By associating with those whose backgrounds are different from his own, the student fosters an appreciation for others. He acknowledges and re- spects other people and their philosophies. Through this association with all peoples the student develops the ability to adapt to changes in society. As he accepts advice and criticism from both his peers and his teachers, he realizes that through experience he may find it necessary to adapt his beliefs and ideals to make them applicable to society. Practicing responsibility and being an enlightened citizen are skills usually developed early in life. The school simply provides an environment in which these skills can be promoted. Aside from work, inter- ests and skills must be cultivated that will fill leisure hours. Williamsport High School offers extracurricu- lar activities and numerous courses in language, lit- erature, home economics, driver education, social science, line art and business principles for the cul- tivation of an interest that puts leisure time to good use. The principal goal of W. H. S. is to produce citizens who are socially minded and can compete socially and influentially in the complex society of today. aes' ' Students eating lunch in the cafeteria and the queen and her court at homecoming display social adeptness and ease.
