School Acti ities As school is a place of preparation, our high school strives to prepare young people to cope with the problems that all people face in life. For this pur- pose W. H. S. endeavors to teach its students to be morally competent. The instruction for moral com- petence can be divided into two areas: the develop- ment of the character traits directly affecting how well one gets along with others, and the development of certain social skills such as working with a team. The teachers, through classroom activities, pro- vide a student with an excellent environment for strengthening character traits that directly affect his Compatability with others. These classroom activities include special debates, panel discussions, oral reports, and simple everyday class participation in the form of question and answer periods and class discussions on a topic. In order for a student to participate in such activities, he must learn to have respect for others and their opinions and he must learn patience, which results in self-control. Going outside the strictly classroom atmosphere and into the areas of physical education and extra- curricular activities provides excellent opportunities to develop social skills that all people need to live in a society. In these two areas teams are needed in the form of sports teams, publication staffs, musical or- ganizations and service clubs. Each of these teams does not require outstanding individuality but rather all participants working toward a common goal, whether it be winning a game, putting out a good newspaper, magazine or yearbook, singing in the same key and harmonizing, or serving school and commu- nity. All these things-good classroom atmosphere, physical education, and extracurricular activities- teach moral competence.
