Education Makes tlie M an Dear Graduate: The Class of 1953, in its iuturc joui ' nc s in the realms of education, work and life, can sav with pride, I am a graduate of the Williamsport Senior I ligh School. Yours is a great school. The people of Wil- liamsport, joined by our neighbors in six nearby townships, have provided, in the Williamsport Senior High School-Technical Institute sec- ondary unit, a vouth ser ice which cannot be equaled in the Commonwealth. This fine com- munity educational achie ' ement did not just happen. It is the result of thousands of hours of de oted toil and planning on the part of a ast number of students, parents, teachers, and citizens. The Class of 1953 has made its con- tribution in a full and generous share. May I wish that your future achievement in ) ' our several ways of life be a continued credit to vour Alma IMater. Coach John Barry ' s surprising Millionaires ended the ' 52- ' 53 season with a 15-7 record, and went to the District Four finals beForc being eliminated. With only one letter- man back from last year, senior Walt Dunston, Barrv molded a hard fighting, never-give-up team. He accom- plished this with three seniors, Dunston, Ed Llewelyn, and John Cupp; three juniors, Steve Baidy, Charley Stearns, and Jack Straub; and sophomore Joe Mnick. The cagers lost their opening awav game to Kingstcm In a 61-57 score, but retaliated with decisive victories over I la Je Township and Selinsgrove. Two away gaines again haunted the Milli maires as the powerful teams of Ply- mouth and Ha leton defeated W. H. S. The Cherry and liite then rolled up four successive wins over Lock Ha- ven, Steelton, Ha le I ' ownship and Mt. Carmcl. This winning streak, however, was shattered by a 75-61 defeat .It C ' oal Township. The Millionaires roared back with another four game winning spree, counting verdicts over Alloona, Shamokin, Lock Haven and Coal Township. Incidentally, the two regular contests between W. H. S. and Coal Township were two of the best games of the season. C ' oal had beaten Williamsport at Coal Township ,iiul thev came to the Third Street Gym rated the No. I te.im in Pennsylvania riding the crest of a 17 game win ning streak. But this didn ' t stop the Millionaires, as they overpowered the Demons 56--13. After this sensational tilt the c.igers traveled to Sliamo kin oniv til be upset 55 51 b the Shaiinnies. The Cherry and White ended the season with the inter-city rival St. loscph. In this game the Millionaires again shattered an iippiincnts ' 17-game winning streak. In the District Four play-offs, WHS drew a bye and faced Coal Township in the championship tilt. The Mil- lionaires were ahead at half time and still led at the end of the third quarter, but in the last 14 seconds the Demons made a field goal and a foul which sank WHS, 60-57. Nothing is left of this ear, except the memories which are recorded between the co ers of this yearbook. Here is his final word: Hi everyone, or should I say cheerio, adios, or what- e er it is which means good-bve, for this will be the last chance I ' ll ha e to talk to vou directly as Mr. Mil- lionaire. From now on I ' ll just be a memory, like your school days through which I ha e just guided vou. I hope I ha en ' t missed anything, but if I did I ' m very sorrw 1 don ' t know whether I mentioned it about a hundred pages ago in my introduction speech or not, but the very best of luck to you in your future years! I hope your high school education will help bring suc- cess to you in everything you do. Don ' t forget me or good old WHS! Now to those who made this volume possible, the La Memoire Staff and myself would like to express our gratitude and special thanks to: Widemire Studios, which arranged the club and homeroom pictures and divider pages; Van Baelen Studios for the Senior por- traits; and the Grit Publishing Company for its in- valuable contribution toward the layout and printino of this yearbook.
