Imlixlxlng Nlxm- x. an-'E' l' 1' XIIJYIJ, X XNXIIH, .mal IJIIXSIUN Ivuxx This was truly a great year in football! Our streamlined team under Coach Vargo, ended the season undef feated, but tied once, making them. along with XVilliam Penn. Co-Champions ol' the Central Pennsylvania Con- ference in 1950. The Millionaires have not enjoyed such splendid success on the gridiron since 1945. The Iirst victim to fall under the power ol' the Millionaires was Sunbury. Our lirst stringers had things so much their own way that Coach Vargo sent in the sophomore team to lessen the slaughter. llowever, in spite of this, the linal score was 32 0. Our next opponent was Mount Carmel Township, whose team we defeated by a 3740 score, with our rc- serves playing a large part of the game. The third contest of the season saw us matched against .Xrt Pursells York eleven. Since Pursell was a former XV. Il. S. coach, we were determined to win this one. His boys fought hard but we easily overcame them by a 40-6 score. XVith Lennie Smith playing his heart out, the hlillionaires toppled a stubborn Reading team by 20-O. Andy Stopper, former VV. H. S. star, and coach of the Red Knights, saw his ICLIIH enter Cherry-guarded territory only once. making his homecoming rather sorrowful. The Vargo Express anticipated a powerful Lancaster team which just didnt materialize. XVe easily over- powered the hlcliaskey lligh eleven by 4147. Everyone was worried about .lohn l larris, including Tom Vargo. who said XVilliamsport hasn't scored a point against llarris in the last three years and it could happen that way this year, too. Up to the third quarter it seemed that Coach Vargo was right, but Yost went over the goal line. .Xnderson went over for the extra point on a faked kick play. That was the final score of a thrilling gameH7f0. The Lebanon game was preceded by an outdoor pep rally with a demonstration of a Cherry and Wliiter cut- ting down a Lebanon cedar, which was exactly what happened in this game. George Fisher was given the nickname of Fumble Finder, which he earned by grabbing two loose balls and converting them into touch- downs. This, plus our smoothly clicking line play, gave us the victory by 25-O and a clear slate thus far. Next came the most thrilling game of the year-VVi1liam Penn vs. XVilliamsport, the only two undefeated teams in the conference. A gigantic pre-game pep rally was held in front of the Court llouse, atter the students had marched from the high school to Pine Street. Everything was set for the hig game hut the weather-it had rained and the held was muddy. Each moment ol' the game held its special drama. XfVilliam Penn made the lirst touchdown in the opening quarter, putting the home team hehind. llut XVilliamsport, not to he outdone, soon liorged ahead with a 13-7 lead. llowever the Millionaires will never forget the moment the Tigers tied the score, 13-13 in the last quarter, forcing us to settle for a tie. On Armistice Day the Cherry and VVhite smothered a weak llazlc Township eleven. scoring virtually at will. The linal result was -17-O, the highest score the Billtowners have registered since 19-15. Lock Haven showed a powerful passing attack, completing 15 out of 25 passes for 162 yards, hut the Vargo Express was gunning for a perfect season and dumped the Bobcats 38 13. Meeting Steelton in the annual Turkey Day classic we were unheaten hut tied, and playing for at least a Cof Championship in the Conference. The field was covered with snow which was cleared off hefore the game hegan. ln spite of the weather, VVil1iamsporters were hoping for a perfect season. With each hall player carrying out his assignments and having a fierce desire to win, the Cherry and X'Vhite trounced Steelton 20-7. The linal whistle started oil a grand display ol' emotion in spite of the liact that we were Co-Champions with Vklilliam Penn. The VV. 11. S. Players carried victorious Tom Vargo oil, the lield. Behind them, a sorrowful Steelton team walked oll' slowly. But the fans really let loose hy tearing down the old wooden scoreboard, making a new one a neccsf sity for next year. Thanksvivinv Dav was turned into a liiwh school celehration day' for all XV. 11. S. students. . . C D . 5 . This year we cannot give credit to just one player because each one did his part. VVe had Earl Yost's tricky ball handlingg Dave Anderson, George Karchner, and Lennie Smith making the yarclageg llerk XVha1ey and joel Kinley kicking off and making conversionsg Bill Semher, Ceorge Camp, Keith Horn, 'lim Eshhach, Ray Sye and Blair Hemans blockingg and all the reserves doing their hest. The credit for this goes to Coach Vargo and his able assistants, Jackie Freeman, Bill Miller, and Tex Stevenson. They worked hard with the hoys to def vclop such an outstanding team. To you, Tom Vargo and your associates, we say thanks, thanks a lot, and may the future he as successful. Duc. Dec. Dec Doc. Dcc.
