It will probably be your privilege to see the year 2000. Henry Wzlrrl Beecher on:e Sllltl-llWC should so live and labor in our time that what Came to us as seed may go to the next generation as blossom, and what came to us as blossom may go to them as fruit. Thar is what we mean by progress. Sw.. PAUL E. W1TB'IEYER, Superintenolewt of Schools. Seated, Left to Right-George R. Lanxadc, Howard Heiny, Iohn Person, jr., John Rathniull, llliluhutlx L. Never before have its horizons been so wide. Never before has progress advanced so rapidly along many lines. As you take your place in the school of life you will find yourselves truly citizens of the world. To-day we know almost at once what goes on in many of its far corners and what happens there has an effect far beyond the immediate surroundings. Living in this kind of a world is interesting and stimulating. However, the law of life still holds that greater privileges always bring with them increased responsibilities. This means that clear and careful thinking are vital now as never before. We have tried to teach you how to weigh facts and to make sound decisions. We hope that you will make this your objective as you leave us. Our best wishes go with youl . ?1 4 L. F. DERR, Principal. DR. G. ll. PARKES, Director of Technical Institute. DR. I. T. EVERETT LOGUE Senior Class Father DEAR CLASS, You are being graduated at a unique time in history-the mid-point of a century. Behind you lie fifty years of progress-the achievements of which would have seemed fantastic at the turn of the last century. The future is yours. My asso- ciation with you these past three years has strength- ened my belief that each of you can fill an important place in making the progress of the next half-cen- tury equal, if not surpass, that of the last. Though l began my term as class teacher with a feeling of hesitancy, l leave it with one of regret. l shall remember with pleasure and nostalgia our parties and proms, our problems and worries, our plays and programs. l shall remember with pride the fine spirit of co-operation of the officers and committees. And I shall treasure the friendships that l have made among you, friendships that are made possible only by working and playing together. And now you are going to leavefsome to con- tinue in other schools, some to take jobs, still others to become homemakers. l want to wish each of you success and happiness wherever you go and in whatever you do. Sincerely, ma ELEANOR lVlALLAL1Eu. 18 SENIOR CLASS 0Fl lK'EllS Seah-fl. Left to Riglutf-lloitvll, 1'x'c-sillenti Szllwr. Svvrz-tary. StamliugfSmith, Vive 1'resimlm-mt: Tmlcl, Tl'C'2lNllY'0l'. . BLAKl'ISl.I'IY MR. DONALD AFGSBVI1 I I uniur Fluss Tezwln-i' Junior Class Mother Juiiinr Class I-'ntha-r unior Class Hear ye! Hear ye! Hear what 476 students in the junior Class have done this year with the assistance of their genial Class Teacher, Mr. Glenn Lunger, the Class Mother, Mrs. Alfred M. Blakesley, and the Class Father, Mr. Donald Augsberger. Again this year the juniors with the help of the three Junior cheerleaders, Amelia Abrunzo, Betty Brungard, and lanice Smith, cheered their athletic classmates on to many thrilling victories. ln football, Dave Anderson, Earl Yost, and Blair Hemans, gave their all for W. H. S. Carl Emick, jim Mosher, and William Liddic represented their class in cross country. ln basketball Herk Whaley, Dave Anderson, and Bill Sember gave cause for many spirited cries while Blair Hemans, Earl Yost, and David Yoder gave grunts and groans for the honor of the Iunior Class in wrestling. ln October the class was allowed to vote for oHicers for the first time with the following results: Earl Yost, President, Lorraine Kitchen, Vice President, Ann Holland, Secretary, Eugene Yellets, Treasurer. The Iunior-Senior Party in January made everyones heart beat a little faster with an exciting evening of dancing and games. But the Junior-Senior Hop gave the luniors their biggest thrill, since they were allowed for the first time to invite outsiders to this spring dance. ln general, the Class of 1951 had a profitable and fun-packed year which, it is hoped, will enable them to 'Kgrow as they gon into their senior year at Williamsport High School. 56 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS First How, Left to Right-Kitclien, Vive Presinle-nt: Hnllauul, S4't'l'1'tlll y. S., they had an exciting year full of education and fun before them. The bewildered ex-freshmen were glad to find their pleasant class teacher, Miss Lucile Cordner, ready to answer their questions and guide them, with the able assistance of lylrs. Courtney Maltby, Class Mother, and Mr. Wright Mackey, Class Father. Soon the sophomores became an organized group and began making themselves known to the older students at high school. Sam Belle, George Karschner, and Raymond Sye distinguished themselves by their football achievements. Christine Siegel, Nancy Focht, and Barbara Kiessling cheered their classmates on to successful basketball season with Sam Belle, .lim Starr, loe Dunston, and Bob Baity representing their class on the playing floor. The Cross Country team also benefited by the help of john Youngman and Al DeTurk throughout their season. Many of the sophomores made themselves known in the band, orchestra, and Clee Club, while the March issue of Cherry and White proved their literary ability. On December 9, 1949 the Sophomore party gave them their biggest thrill with an evening of dancing and games. As a whole the Class of 1952 had the time of their lives this year, but all of them are hoping for many more enjoyable events as they continue their high school careers. 60 SOPHOMORE WELFARI-I COMMITTEE First Row, Loft In Hightgllall, Hollvn, Pollm-k, Kinley. La Meinoire Editorial Staff The Editorial Stafi has tried to make this volume of LA lVlEMo1RE one that will truly bring back memories of high school days. With Mr. Livingston, our adviser, we worked a short time at the end of our junior year and during most of our senior year in preparing this yearbook. We have encount- ered some unusual difficulties which have delayed publication, but it is our hope that you will End the book really enjoyable. We feel that much credit is due the members of the Art Staff, who, under the direction of Mr. Ference, have done an exceptionally fine job of producing the clever drawings, cartoons, and other art features of this book. Many pleasures have attended the writing of this annual, and we hope that many pleasures will attend the reading of it and that this yearbook will always be a cherished possession in your library. The staff discovered shortly after it was organized that an energetic sales promotion plan must be inaugurated to arouse enthusiasm and break down sales resistance. Sales promotion skits were used to put across the drive to the students. An installment plan was established to assist the students in buying the book. Then, our solicitors contacted the student body and our advertisers. The members of the Business Staff have done their best to fulfill the obligations and responsibilities that have been theirs. We thank our subscribers, our ad- vertisers, and our faculty adviser, Mr. hletzger, for enabling us to bring this yearls sales campaign to a successful conclusion. Cherry and White Business Staff This year the Cherry and White business staff added another chapter to its growing success story. Under the able managament of lVlr. Kerr lVliller, faculty adviser, and Richard Krimm, business manager, the stag had a very profitable year. Eliminating the advertisements, the staff was able to cut the subscription costs from 31.50 a year to 3.50. Increased circulations seemed to prove that this was a wise venture. The student body applauded this new policy as a step in the right direction and said 'thank you' to the business staff. 71 First llow. Left to liigglit-Rr-ynulils, Frantz. Ze-rhm-. Thornas. Four of the five touchdowns were the result of long runs by Finn, Yellets, and Smith. Coach Pursell got a warm greeting as an individual but a rough welcome as a coach. Playing in ideal weather, the Millionaires, with a touchdown in each period, outplayed the York White Roses, 25-7. Unable to develop sufficient steam and suffering from fumble-itis, the Vargo Express was derailed by the Reading Black Knights. This was the Millionaires' first defeat of the season. The Millionaires made a strong come-back defeating a heavier Lancaster team. With only 45 minutes left in the first half, Bob Richards' beautifully executed 57- FOOTBALL COACHES Left to Right-Mr. Myers, Mr. Stevenson. Mr. Vargo, Mr. Freenu l I l 1 Mas? yard run broke up the scoreless ball game. The forward wall, led by Mike Dincher, did an excellent job in keeping the Red Tornadoes from scoring. As a result of fumble-itis and loose line play, the Millionaires suffered their second defeat of the season at the hands of the john Harris Pioneers. Although the Cherry and White scored two touchdowns in the last period, these fourteen points werenlt enough to overcome the early lead which the Lebanon Cedars had established. The Vargo Express got on the track again by defeating the VVilliam Penn Tigers, 26-7. The Millionaires' speed, deception, and aggressiveness, plus jim Einn's four sensational touchdowns, proved too much for the Tigers. Although the Millionaires entered as the underdog, they showed superiority in every department except passing, and defeated the Altoona Mountain Lions, 26-12. In the last home game of the season, the Cherry and White defeated the hard- fighting Lock Haven Bobcats. Bob Eess1er's 65-yard touchdown run, made possible by Sid Bai1ey's key block, led the Millionaire attack. In the most heartbreaking game of the season, the Millionaires were defeated by the Steelton Steamrollers, 14-7. What appeared to be certain victory up to the third period changed to defeat through costly fumbles and the loss of Finn because of injury. This year's squad added wrestling matches to its activities. The squad, which is composed of three seniors, three juniors, and three sophomores, practiced almost every morning during football and basketball seasons under the able supervision of Miss Vivian Martin. The seniors and juniors also received Hag twirling instructions from Mr. Oliver Helmrich, a former W. H. S. drum major. The well-coordinated routines of these peppy girls added much to the spirit shown at our athletic contests, while the Hag twirling gave color to the already splendid demonstrations put on by the W. Baslrzetball The Cherry and White Cagers started the season with four veterans, Ceorge Seidel, Ken Patterson, Dave Anderson, and Herk Whaley. Bill Sember, Roger Smith, lack Ameigh, and Ronnie Miller made up the balance of the squad. Bill Sember, who became our regular center, contributed his 6 ft. 4 to the height ad- vantage which our team had over almost all of their opponents. After winning their first seven games things looked very bright, but after Hazleton defeated us, 40-31, the Millionaires seemed to play in spurts-brilliantly in some games and just the opposite in others. No one will forget the exciting Pottsville game, when Ceorge Seidelis basket won the game for the Cherry and White, 35-34. The return game at Pottsville was also a thriller with the Cherry and VVhite Winning, 46-42. Naturally everyone will remember what a beating we gave St. Ioe, 62-28, but then Hazleton in the very next game defeated us, 62-28. Although we were also defeated by Altoona, we were still eligible for District 4 playogs. We defeated Shamokin, 57-23, in a brilliantly played game in which our shooting average was 487 , and became District 4 Champions for the fifth consecutive time. We were eliminated in the inter-district playoffs by Swoyersville, 55-34. Ceorge Seidel and Ken Patterson were elected eo-captains. COACIIES M.xN.u:ic1:s 92 Left to Righffll. In three triangular meets at Mt. Carmel, the team beat Reading, Pottsville, Lebanon, and Mt. Carmel. At the only home meet it easily defeated Altoona, 21-34. Bob Hollen finished hrst and set a new course record of 10:47. Other Billtowners who broke old records were Pete Judd, Bill Liddic, and joe O'Brien. In the State Meet on November 12, VVi1- liamsport placed second to Ambridge. Hollen and Judd finished third and sixth respectively. A lot of credit for the success of the team should be given to Coach Ray Jamison and his able assistant Mr. Bill Nliller. Trac Q The track season this year was very successful with our cindermen winning four out of live meets. The boys, well-coached by Ray Jamison and Bill Miller, won the Coaldale Invitation 1NIeet, Lock Haven Invitation, District 4 Championship, and a dual meet with Altoona, while losing only the hit. Carmel Invitation. Four very exciting races saw four old records fall. In the Coaldale meet Jimmy Finn broke the 19 year old record of 10 seconds for the 100 yard dash. His time was 9.8 seconds. In the meet with Altoona two more records came down. Finn broke the old time of 22 seconds for 220 yards with the time of 21.8 seconds. The half mile relay team consisting of Bob Richards, joe Dietch, Tony Di Salvo, and jim Finn lowered the old record to 31348. On the 27th of May the team went to State College for the State Meet. Here Finn established his fourth record by winning the 440 yard run in 50.7 seconds, thus breaking his own record of 50.9 which he set last year. First Row, Left to Iliulit-f-Mr. Jzunison. Confuir. Golf This year, for the first time, our gulf team took part in six interscholastic matches. After beating hluncy in a close, hard-fought battle, 19-16, the maulers lost their first match to a strong Shamokin team 32-7. Again the grapplers won by taking the measure of Sunbury, 29-1 l. After tying Forty Fort 20-20, the team had trouble winning the rest of the season. Lock Haven defeated VVilliamsport 22-16.
