Though our fortune today is in education rather than gold, the requisites for success are similar to those which the Hforty-niners faced. In order to reach California and wealth, they faced many hardships such as deserts and mountains. Our deserts are time and our mountains are study, but throughout our years of high school we have drawn closer and closer to our HCalifornia . The land frontiers have disappeared, but the economic and scientific frontiers are bigger and wider than ever. We must become strong in body, mind, and spirit if we are to successfully face the world of tomorrow. It is in this spirit that 'we present this book as a portrayal of our final preparation in our search for Hgoldn. Livingston, our editorial adviser, with the hope that your yearbook would be the very best. VVe sincerely believe we have accomplished our aim. lr is our sincere belief that our Art Staff, under the capable direction of Mr. lierence, has done an exceptionably fine job this year. All drawings and mountings were done in our own art room. VVC have done our best to make the book an accurate account of the forty-niners, which we know each ol' you will cherish as a record of a very happy period in your life. VVe have chosen the llorty-niner theme because our search for knowledge ties in so well with their search lor gold, and to show that we of the class of '49 appreciate those things which arc more precious than gold. JOHN VANCE Senior Class Father O the students of '49 come cordial greetings from the one of your number whose duties are in the conning tower. For three years it has fallen to our lot to keep a weather eye on the horizon and at the same time to see that nothing untoward arises in the near environment to harm or impede the ship. Nor has the discernment of storm-clouds and the averting of dangers been the important part of our work. Rather have we looked far and wide to observe the fairest seas on which to sail and the richest ports from which to load our cargoes. Will you accept assurance from your pilot, that never did our keel run so deep, our course lie so directly to- ward our coveted goal, nor did we have on board so happy and hopeful a company as that which cheers us on today? The crisis upon which society has come is not a collapse, but a climax. From the viewpoint of education, we observe an encouraging reappraise- ment of values. That which the-world had thought most substantial has been revealed as most insub- stantial. To give up the old ideas and ideals and to accept those which are coming into ever clearer focus, is to give up the ephemeral for the eternal. Those who go out of school today enter upon an age of rebuilding. ln this new age success will not be measured by amassed wealth, but by that which the Ancient Greeks held up as the goal for their youth, namely human worth. Therefore, look well to '49. A mission un- matched awaits her. Keep her fit for any sea and make sure that she will ever take her course not from false lights along the shore, but from the fixed stars in the eternal heaven. M. Yin' l'l:esi4le-lit. Junior Class Histor Of the 527 of us who entered high school as sophomores last year, 502 have returned this year as juniors. As we started our second year at high school, we were happy to find the helpful hand of Miss Eleanor Mallalieu waiting to guide us again. The class parents of our sophomore year, Mrs. Merl G. Colvin and Mr. Weymouth Morris, have been replaced this year by Mrs. William W. Clark and lVlr. Harry W. Morgan. Our spirited junior cheerleaders, Spinkie Strayer, Barb Karmatz, and Bev Smith, had good reasons to cheer so loudly, for the junior class was well represented in the Held of sports. In football our stars were jim Finn, Bob Richards, and Walt Ilniski. Bob Hollen, john Gates, and Pete Judd distinguished themselves in cross-country. jack Ameigh, Ken Patterson, George Seidel, and Roger Smith were our heroes in basketball. This year, for the first time, we were given the privilege of electing class officers. After much anxiety while the votes were being tabulated, we found that our oH'icers were as follows: President, jim Finn, Vice President, joanie Cooper, Treasurer, john Gates, and Secretary, Harriett Gilmore. We were recognized for our literary ability when we presented to the school the junior issue of the Cherry and White. Last year the Sophomore Party on February 13 seemed like the biggest thrill we'd ever had. But now that we have compared it this year with the Senior-Junior Party on January 21 and the Senior-Junior Hop on May 17, we find that we have many more happy memories to recall. As a Whole our first two years at W. H. S. have been very happy ones for us, and as We look back over the events of the past two years, we see promises of many more wonderful days ahead of us in our senior year. gg 1.jLlgAN0Ig MALLALIE1' MRS. Remember how bewildered and shy we were when 531 of us entered Williamsport High School for the first time? VVhat would we have done without the friendly guidance of our class teacher, Mr. Glenn Lunger, and our class parents, Mrs. Guy Shepherd and Mr. Arthur E. Newton? Very early in the year we showed our ability in the lield of sports. ln football our sophomore heroes were Gene Yellets, Dave Stroehmann, Dave Anderson, and Herlc Whaley. Joe O'Brien, Carl Emick, lim Mosher, and Bill Liddic were our representatives in cross-country. Later in the season Phil Prowant, Bill Sember, Bob Colley, and Dave Anderson were our contributions to the basketball team. However, the boys were not the only sophomore participants in the Held of sports. During all the ups and downs of our thrilling sports season our boys were staunchly supported by our peppy sophomore cheerleaders, Janice Smith, Amelia Abrunzo, and Betty Brungard. VVe demonstrated our ability in other fields, too. The sophomore issue of the Cherry and Ufhite was a striking example of our literary talent. Our musical ability was displayed both in the W. H. S. band and in our school orchestra. But the annual Sophomore Party on December 10 gave us the biggest thrill of the year-our wonderful sophomore year. It was only a forerunner of all the happy surprises to be offered by our two coming years at VV. H. S. Mil. GLEN l.l'NllI4IIi AIRS- fl. xl- SIII'31'llElUl Blu. Alllfllllll E. R7 ln the rain and mud of the William Penn game neither team, both usually good ollensively, could cross the goal line. Altoona numbed our offensive thrust while winning 31-14. Fumbles and inter- ceptions prevailed throughout the game. Here comes the big game of the year-Lock Haven! We were the underdogs in this game, Lock Haven having had a very good season and much experienceg but they were hard pressed to win in the final two minutes of the game, 13-7. What a schedule, encountering such hard opponents at the end of the season as Altoona, Lock Haven, and now, Steelton! This game was looked forward to for sometime, both because of our coachis former afhliation with Steelton and because of a possible upset. But our dreams did not come true, for the champion Steamrollers ground us to the tune of 34-0. Although we were beaten by such a score, we had nothing to be ashamed ofg they encountered stubborn resistance and had a wealth of experience. Next year we wish the team good luckg they have some experience now and a basis from which to work. It is not an unsafe prediction that Williamsport in future years will enjoy a new era of footballg it could easily be called the Toretti Era, for this man has done much to bring new life and spirit to Williamsport High School. The members of the squad, in order of position, were as follows: Louis Landon, Curt Kline, Ken Patterson, loann Stahley, and George Nelson. Qualifying to represent District Four, Louis Landon competed in the state single matches, furt Kline and Ken Patterson, in the doubles. 931 Wrestling There was no team or group that represented our school in the 1949 season with such spirit and determination as our wrestling team. This spirit and determination was not fostered by the student body, for they did not even present a commendable turnout, but by our determined coach William Miller. The Cherry and White grapplers made their season's debut at Muncy a success- ful one by winning, 24423. ln their first home match the Millionaires were defeated, 32-7, by a strong Shamolcin squad. Taking to the road again, our mat team overpowered Sunbury, 34-16. Lee Springman set the record at 34 seconds for the quickest pin ever scored by a Williamsport mat- man. Lock Haven supplied the opposition for the second home match when they handed the home club their second loss, 29-14. Traveling to meet one of the state's best teams, the lNlillermen lost a 28-16 decision at Forty Fort. Closing the season at home, Williamsport became Bellefonte's 21st straight victim when beaten, 28-11.
